Was employed as a general foreman by firm of contractors, and absconded 18th inst. with above sum which he had been entrusted to him for petty cash. Was formerly a major in Royal Engineers. No. 12158- 16, b. 1889, 5ft. 4in., c. fresh, h. It. brown, e. blue, scar under chin, 1st rt. and 2nd 1. finger. A salesman ; native of Norfolk. Pre. con. of fraud at PLY- MOUTH. Was employed by firm of cheque machine manufacturers in London and since his discharge in December, 1922, has been calling on firm's customers on pretence of examining cheque Wednesday, April 18, 1923. LANCASHIRE. . 10.— Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing ( person), 12th inst., green velvet handbag, red beads one side, black handle, containing 2 cotton handker- chiefs, small round silver powder case, penknife, door key, nail file, purse and Is. 1 Jd.— Two Youths, both about 1904, 5ft. 3 or 4in. ; dress, overcoats, It. caps, respectable appearance. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 11.— Northampton ( Boro.).— For obtaining £ 250 by false pretences.- Ambrose William Mills, alias Matthews, b. about 1881, 5ft. 7 or 8in„ c. dk., h. dk. brown, e. brown, very prominent nose, suffers with malaria; dress, usually black suit, soft collar, trilby hat. Kept company with a young woman and under promise of marriage obtained above sum to purchase a business. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Brumby, Northampton. NORTHUMBERLAND. 12.- Berwick ( Co.).— For obtaining food and lodgings and £ 2 by false pretences.— Man who gave name of Laurence Hope, b. 1898, 5ft. llin., slender build, c. sallow, clean shaven, South country accent; dress, dk. suit and overcoat, It. trilby hat, black boots. Took lodgings in hotel about a fort- night ago, and said liis father was in business in Leicester and that ho had come for a holiday. After staying a week proprietor of hotel got telephone message saying Hope's father was coming to Berwick and would pay his son's bills and later received another telephone message to the effect that Hope's father had met with motor accident and was delayed. Proprietor became suspicious and questioned Hope about messages. Shortly afterwards accused disappeared and it has since been ascertained that telephone messages were sent by himself. In an attache- case which be left behind was found an Army discharge in name of Laurence Larrington Southwell, letter from lady named Betty W. Forsyth, c/ o Mrs. Nichol, 34, Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh; visiting card in name of Jim A. Inglis, 57, Graham Street, Garnet Hill, Glasgow ; diary of his journeyings showing that on 1st February last he was at Radcliffe- on- Trent, and at Doncaster on 20th February where he worked for five days. He was seen near Belford going South on the night of the 16th inst. Warrant issued. ' Inf. to Supt. Halliday, Berwick. Stated they were dealers from Sevenoaks. Machine was advertised for sale in Motor Cycle issue 13th inst., and same day two men called at the works with a nearly new two- seater motor car and asked to see the cycle, and stated they would decide as to purchase by 12 noon next day. Since been ascertained that above men called at loser's house again on Sunday 15th inst., together with another man whose description cannot be given, and about mid- day two men were seen driving small grey two- seater car ( number believed ME and two numbers) and a man driving a motor cycle and sidecar behind.
