Obtained lodgings, stating that he, along with two other men who would join him later, had come to Burnley for the purpose of fixing copper boilers for local brewery ( false), Warrant issued. Called upon loser and stated he had heen sent by a confederate ( now in prison) respecting a Ford van he had for sale. Took loser to a garage and showed the van, which he represented as his own property and agreed to sell for £ 25. Received £ 5 deposit and balance later. Entered shop and asked to see a diamond ring displayed in window. After examining ring the woman asked assistant to keep ring out of tray whilst she fetched her daughter, for whom the ring was intended, from a local hotel. The assistant left counter for a few seconds and during his absence the above ring was taken and silver shank ring, set 3 white sapphires in coronet setting, substituted. Inf. to the C. Was invited to loser's house, 27th nit., and allowed to stay the night, and in the absence of his woman friend who had invited him to loser's house, falsely stated that his friend had £ 25 belonging to him, and thus obtained above amount. After ho had gone, loser also missed a gent's silver Waltham lever watch, dial loos<\; and a gold single albert, small round links, pendant of black stone, about size of shilling, attached. An army pensioner; native of London. Loser handed the binoculars to Hudson for safe custody while he ( loser) was on leave from the King's Lancashire Convalescent Centre, and on his return found that Hudson had absconded after disposing of the binoculars.
