BERKSHIRE. 2.— Newbury ( Co.).— For fraudulent con- version, 29- 6- 21.— F. H. Bearn, b. 1871, 5ft. llin., stout build, c. florid, grey moustache ( waxed), wears pince- nez. Was employed as a traveller in wines and spirits and was entrusted by his firm with a sum of money to deliver to another person. Is well known to publicans in neighbourhood of Tunbridge Wells, Petersfield, Horsham, Alton and Southampton. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Maunders, Newbury. DERBYSHIRE. 3.— Derby ( Boro.).— For embezzling £ 138 10s. whilst serving as an officer in the Defence Corps, July last.— John Ray Simpson, b. 1891, 5ft. 9in., c. fresh, h. dk. brown, e. ( believed) blue, small dk. moustache ( clipped short), gunshot wound 1. arm, one finger 1. hand contracted ; dress ( usually), blue serge suit, soft collar, tie, grey trilby hat, brown boots or shoes ; respectable appearance. A tailor. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Derby. DORSETSHIRE. 4.— Dorchester ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences, 8- 9- 21.— W. J. Dent ( probabty false), b. 1876 to 1881, 5ft, 7 or 8in., well built, c. fresh, h. fair, clean shaven ; dress, grey suit, carried pair kid gloves, gentlemanly appearance. Wrote to a local firm of builders, using printed paper on which he described himself as an architect, and giving his address as Hatfield, Herts, asking if they would like to tender for the erection of a surgery and garage. Stated application for quantities would have to be accompanied by a deposit of £ 2 in Treasury notes ( to be returned upon receipt of tender), and that arrangements would be made to place the drawings at their disposal. Losers forwarded £ 2 deposit, but heard nothing further. Stayed in lodgings at Hatfield from 4th to 11th September, ordered the above mentioned paper from a printer there, left on the latter date stating he was going to London. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Hussey, Dorchester. 5.— Poole ( Co.).— For stealing— trick, bicycle ( recovered), at Upper Parkstone, 25th ult.— A Man, b. about 1891, 5ft. 8 or 9in., c. dk., h. dk. ( curly), discoloured teeth, clean shaven ; dress, dk. grey suit, It. trilby hat or cap, black boots, may be wearing black leggings ; in possession of blue Naval mackintosh. Also called at several garages and endeavoured to obtain by false pretences, motor tyres, tubes, etc., stating they were for a Major Barclay ( false) ; also for one of the Directors, Barclay's Bank. Stayed at a Bournemouth Hotel from 23rd to 25th ult., signed the register O. C. Foster, Daimlers, Ltd., London, and obtained loan of 15s., leaving as security motor driver's licence, issued in London in name of Frederick Charles Davis, 11, Westbourne- street, Sloane- square, London, S. W. I, No. 283072, dated 3- 11- 19, renewed 5- 11- 20. Inf. to Supt. Sprackling, Poole. 6.— Poole ( Co.).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Union, 2- 9- 21.— William Hunt, b. 1885,5ft. 7 or8in., c. fair ( rather sunburnt), h. dk. brown, e. blue, clean shaven, slightly round- shouldered, slight stoop when walking ; dress, It. grey tweed suit, It. velour trilby hat, brown band, or It. cap. Accompanied by Edith Harriett Garland, b. 1895, 5ft. 5in., c. dk., h. black ; dress, full length saxe blue coat, black hat with yellow band, white stockings, black shoes. Warrant issued. ESSEX. 7.— Brentwood ( Co.).— For stealing quantity builder's tools ;. gent's mackintosh ; 2 pairs rubber boots, etc., at Laindon, on or about 3rd inst.— Patrick Kelly, b. about 1876, 5ft. 9in., medium build, h. black ( turning grey), moustache brown, e. grey, walks very erectly, Irish accent. A labourer ; native of Ireland. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Boyce, Brentwood. GLOUCESTERSHIRE . 8.— Lydney ( Co.).— For obtaining food and lodgings and £ 2 10s. by false pretences, 28th ult.— A Man, who gave name of Morgan, b. about 1881, 5ft. 5 or 6in., medium build, c. dk., h. dk. ( turning grey at sides), e. grey, clean shaven, 1. thumb nail discoloured, apparently due to recent blow, very plausible ; dress, dk. suit, black boots ( K make), carrying a brown attache- case. Stated he was a native of Bristol. Stayed at a hotel and informed landlord that he had a poultry farm, that he was. frequently passing through Lydney with pro- visions in his Vauxhall car, with which he had an accident, and which had been taken to Shirley's garage at Chepstow for repairs. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT— continued. car was ready and that cost of repairs was £ 7 10s. Shortly afterwards accused returned to the hotel and was informed of the message. He then told the landlord that the cost of repairs was more than he had expected, and as he had only £ 5, asked for a loan of £ 2 10s. for about half- an- hour. This amount was given him, and he left ostensibly to fetch the car, but failed to return. It was subsequently ascertained that no car had been sent to the garage for repairs and no telephone message had been sent. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Shelswell, Lydney. HAMPSHIRE. 9.— Alton ( Co.).— For stealing £ 23 at Standford, between 1st ult. and 4th inst.— James Winchester, b. 1902, 5ft. 8in., c. pale, h. dk. brown, e. dk. ; dress, dk. suit, cap or bowler hat, black boots ; respectable appearance. A pantry boy ; native of Bramshott. Had in his possession small frame black enamelled bicycle, large bell and acetylene lamp attached. May endeavour to enlist in Army or Navy or to obtain employment on board ship. Inf. to Supt. Reuben, Alton. LANCASHIRE. 10.— Bolton ( Boro.).— For stealing ( bailee), 9ct. bar brooch, about 2in. long, with round centre for monogram ; 18ct. engagement ring, set 3 diamonds and 2 rubies ( 1 diamond missing).— John Bennett, C. R. O. No. 11236- 14, Cases Nos. 370, Supplement A ( Vol. VII.) and 293, Supplement B ( Vol. VIII.), b. 1893, 5ft. 6| in., stout build, c. dk., h. black, e. grey- hazel, clean shaven ; dress, grey or blue serge suit, grey cap or trilby hat, collar, tie, black shoes. A collier ; native of Chorlev. Pre. con. of larceny at CHOR- LEY, PRESTON, BLACKPOOL and CREWE. Made the acquaintance of a young woman. 31st ult., stated he was traveller for a firm of jewellers in Carlisle and induced her to entrust him with above property for the purpose of having same converted and repaired. Left 3rd inst. saying he had to meet the manager of his firm. Inf. to the C. C., Bolton. 11.— Liverpool ( City).— Case No. 14, 2- 11- 21, cancelled. Harry Reid not now wanted ( warrant withdrawn). 12.— Manchester ( City).— James Booth, Case No. 104, 19- 10- 21, is identical with James Booth, C. R. O. No. 1799- 06, Case No. 13, 4- 7- 19, b. 1878, 5ft. lin., c. ruddy, h. dk. brown, e. hazel, scar and K 3 coal mark 1. temple. A painter ; native of Chester- field. Pre. con. of larceny and a minor offence at CHESTERFIELD and SHEFFIELD. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Manchester. 13.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing ( bailee) small reed box organ, brass corners, carried on a perambulator, at Ancoats. — Tom Bridge, b. 1881, 5ft. llin., good build, clean shaven, 1. arm amputated ; dress, blue jersey, elk. jacket and trousers, cap, black boots. Hired the above from loser, 6th May, for a week and failed to return same. Travels the country and frequents common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Manchester. 14.— Rawtenstall ( Co.).— For stealing by trick ( ringing the changes), 3rd inst.— A Man, b. 1891, 5ft. 9in., medium build, c., h. and e. dk., clean shaven, South country accent ; dress, brown suit, grey trilby hat, blue striped collar, dk. knitted tie, grey spats, respectable appearance. Called at a shop where a boy was temporarily in charge, bought a packet of cigarettes, tendered a 10s. note and was given 9s. 6d. change. He then asked if it was a £ 1 note he had given and requested to see it. The 10s. note was handed back to him, and he then gave the boy a 10s. note and 10s. silver and asked for £ 1 note in place. A £ 1 note was given and he asked for 6d. change for the cigarettes which was also given him. Inf. to Supt. Linaker, Rawtenstall. 15.— Warrington ( Boro.).— For stealing ( trick) 15th ult., gent's Unity bicycle, black enamelled with yellow lines, 26in. frame, 28in. wheels, Dunlop tyre back, No. 2813 on frame, rubber pedals, upturned handle- bars, Brooks saddle, rim brakes, metal mudguards, acetylene lamp on front, tool- bag and pump attached.— A Man, b. 1881 to 1883, 5ft. 4in., stiff build, h. and e. dk., clean shaven ; dress, blue serge suit, dk. grey cap, collar and tie. The above machine was stored in a shed in the yard of a house close to a football ground, on payment. Several men view football matches from the vard wall and the bicycles stored with numbered tickets attached could be plainly seen. Accused stated the above bicycle belonged to him and that be had lost the storage ticket, but as he gave the number on the machine it was handed over to him. It was afterwards ascertained that he was one of a party of men who had been standing on the yard wall whilst the match was in progress. Inf. to the C. C., Warrington. 16.— Ulverston ( Co.).— For obtaining 7 tons of potatoes by false pretences at Allithwaite, 22nd and 25th ult.— A Man, who gave the name of William Thomas Martin, b. 1893, 5ft. 6 or 7in., \ \ r THE POLICE GAZETTE. Called on a farmer, represented he was a wholesale potato dealer and wanted potatoes for his customers. Was riding a Douglas 2f h. p. motor cycle, which he obtained by false pretences at Kendal, No. EC- 970, taxation licence No. 253110, issued 11- 1- 21 to 31- 12- 21, and is in possession of motor driver's, licence No. 8670, issued 5- 9- 21, to Samuel Salmon, 121, High- gate, Kendal, which he borrowed at time of obtaining the motor cycle. May now be using name of Salmon. Identical with A. E. Proctor, Case No. 90, 7- 10- 21. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Yates, Ulverston. WARWICKSHIRE. 20.— Rugby ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences ( worthless cheque), 24th ult.— A Man who gave the name of Cyril Austin Freeman, b. 1891 to 1893, 6ft., thin build, c. pale, h. black ( brushed back), e. blue, thin face, clean shaven, well spoken ; dress, navy blue suit, It. grey trilby hat, black boots. Induced the proprietor of a restaurant to cash cheque No. 320/ A. 37470, drawn on London, Joint, City and Midland Bank, Plymouth Branch. The cheque has since been returned marked No Account. Accompanied by another Man ( not wanted), b. about 1891, 5ft. 5 or 6in., h. It. brown, clean shaven ; dress, dk. suit, dk. grey trilby hat. Appears identical with Cyril Freeman, Case No. 114, 4- 11- 21. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Clarke, Rugby. LINCOLNSHIRE. 17.— Bourne ( Co.).— For failing to answer a summons for common assault on a girl aged 6, and for indecent exposure, 3rd inst.— Henry Field, b. 1861 to 1866, 5ft. 8in., h. grey, moustache grey ( close clipped), mole on one cheek ; dress, dk. grey mixture suit, dk. trilby hat ( believed tweed, black band), wing collar, wears small gaiters when cycling. In possession of Raleigh bicycle, with gear- case, name Stark on visiting card fitted on outside of tool- bag, brown handbag ( about 18 x 12in.), umbrella, navy blue overcoat and brown paper parcel strapped thereon. Believed to be a pensioned sergeant. Royal Artillery, and also a retired school attendance officer, London County Council. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Duffin, Bourne. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 18.— Nottingham ( Co.).— For stealing money and clothing at East Leake, 25th ult.— William Bown, b. 1894, 5ft. 6in. or 7in., slim build, c. pale ; dress, brown or grey suit, cap. Obtained lodgings, stating her husband had been killed in the War, and that prior to enlistment he was an inspector in the Metropolitan Police, also that she was in receipt of a pension of £ 5 a week. Accompanied by 2 girls, ages 10 and 6 yrs. ; one dressed in green coat, other It. coloured coat. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Windsor. DERBYSHIRE. 115.— Renishaw ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 119 bv false pretences at Dronfield Woodhouse, between 26th and 30th ult.— Hubert Bradbury, b. 1893, 5ft. 6in., c. fresh, h. brown, e. blue, slightly bow- legged, slight impediment m speech ; dress, grey suit, brown trilby hat, soft collar, tie, boots. Native of Stannington. Gained the confidence of loser, whom he induced to lend him the above amount on the pretext that he was the son of a well known local farmer, and had the opportunity of buying carts and harness cheaply ( false). Mackie, b. 1895, 5ft. 9in., slender build, h. brown, e. grey, well spoken ; dress, grey flannel suit, grey trilby hat, brown shoes, gentlemanly appearance. Took lodgings at an hotel on 22nd ult., and absconded several days later taking with him above described bicycle. V LANCASHIRE. 117.— Accrington ( Boro.).— For stealing from a dwelling house, 2nd inst., lady's silver watch, key wind, flowered dial, pink Roman numerals, initials ( not known) on back of case, which will not close owing to catch being worn ; and 9s.— A Man, b. 1891 to 1893, 5ft. 7 or 8in., c. dk. ; dress, dk. brown overcoat, dk. grey cap, yellow socks and black boots. Entered house by shop door and, with lower part of his face masked with black and white handkerchief, seized the occupier ( an old woman) and, after binding her with rope, ransacked house and shop and decamped with above mentioned property. MONMOUTHSHIRE . 119.— Abertillery ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences ( worthless cheque), 4th inst.— Frank Harling, alias G. C. Hughes, C. R. O. No. 186- 99, Case No. 83, current issue, for description, etc. Nasal accent, wears pince- nez ; dress, It. Burberry coat, It. blue silk muffler, green felt hat, It. socks, black boots with patent leather toe caps ; carried a brown leather bag. Called on a tradesman who had advertised a house for sale and, after examining same, wrote a cheque, No. K/ M 344434, for £ 500, drawn on Barclay's Bank, Ltd., as deposit. Returned shortly afterwards, stated the bank was closed and induced loser to cash a cheque, No. K/ M 344435, for £ 10. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Lewis, Abertillery.
