No. 12297- 15, and Alfred Dean, C. R. O. No. 16367- 15 ( in custody), and obtaining £ 1076 by cardsharping and attempting to obtain £ 3000 by the confidence betting trick.— Edward Norton, alias Edward Joseph Naughton, C. R. O. No. S/ 139623, b. 1888, oft. 7jin., medium build, c. ruddy, h. dk. brown, e. brown, clean shaven, scar top 1. forefinger, smartly dressed., A labourer; native of Australia, Pre. con. of fraud, larceny and minor offences at ST. ALBANS ( Edward Naughton), and on C. Has also con. for larceny— confidence trick, at AMSTERDAM as Robert William Crawford. With Dean and Brennan they met loser at a fashionable hotel, posed as wealthy Australians, and invited loser to Norton's flat where a game of Anzac poker was introduced. The game had been in progress for some time and the pool contained a considerable amount of money, when loser, by turning up an ace, decided to go for the whole pool. He turned up the next card which was another ace, and thus lost. Others have been victimised in a similar manner. Warrant issued. Inf. to C. R. O. 2.— S Division.— For obtaining £ 15 by worthless cheque.— R. S. Mackie, b. 1895, 5ft, 6 or 7in., slim build, h. dk., clean shaven ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, fawn trench coat, dk. cap, black shoes. Called on loser, stayed the night, and the next day stated he had no money. Induced loser to change a cheque for £ 15 which he made out on a piece of paper, drawn on the National Bank of Scotland, Greyfriars Branch, Edinburgh. The cheque was subsequently returned marked " No such branch as Greyfriars Branch, Edinburgh." Was known to loser's son whilst serving in the Army. Warrant issued. Inf. to C. R. O. DERBYSHIRE. 3.— Derby ( Boro.).— For stealing from a hotel, 29th or 30th ult.— Gent's 9ct. snake ring, set with 2 red stones ( 1 broken) ; 9ct. safety tie- pin ; plain gold medal ; gold medal, inscribed Six a side, N. S. C., on front, Winner on back ; pair It. grey tweed trousers ; gent's white cotton shirt; 2 silk handkerchiefs, Egyptian ; silver cigarette- case ( recovered at Nottingham).— Bert Beers, b. about 1886, 5ft. 5 or 6in., slim build, c. sallow, h. dk., clea'n shaven, bad protruding teeth upper jaw, slight impediment in speech ; dress, It. grey suit, fawn trilby hat. Is the son of a hotel pro- prietor, and is fond of boasting about it. Stays at Temperance Hotels. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Derby. 4.— Derby ( Boro.).— Charles Kempster, Case No. 2, 27- 5- 21, is identical with Charles Kempster, alias Charles Narcissus Kempster, C. R. O. Pre. con. of obtaining credit by fraud, fraud, cyclestealing and larceny at GREAT TORRINGTON, BIDEFORD, SOUTH MOLTON, TAUNTON, SLOUGH ( Reginald Easterbrook), CARDIFF ( Richard Braund), BEACONSFIELD ( Albert Donmore) and on T. On 1st inst., he travelled by the 6.46 p. m. train from Tisbury to Salisbury, and stated to 2 men who were travelling in the same compartment that he had come from Cheddar and was proceeding to Aldershot, but could not obtain a ticket to take him beyond Salisbury. KENT. 8.— Canterbury ( City).— For obtaining £ 3 9s. by false pretences, 26th ult.— G. T. Endsleigh, alias T. C. Montrose, b. 1S71 to 1876, oft. 6in., medium build, long wrinkled face, clean shaven, very high forehead, tips of 2 or 3 fingers 1. hand m. ssing ; dress, dk. grey suit, white collar, black knitted tie, blue- grey trilby hat ( worn well back, showing whole of foreuead), black bouts, carried a plain knob walking- stick and tan kid gloves. After learning that loser was desirious of obtaining employment he called on him, handed him a card with T. C. Montrose, Consulting Engineer, War- wick House, Finchley, N., thereon, and offered him an appointment as assistant traveller to Messrs. Armstrong & Whitworth, Motor Manu- facturers, Cricklewood, at a wage of £ 4 10s. per week, and lis. bonus, rising 10s. every 6 mos., and guaranteed employment for 12 mos. He induced loser to accept the post and then informed him that as a security for the money which he would receive on their behalf, the firm required him to be insured in the Sun or Ocean Insurance Companies for the sum of £ 500, and asked for a year's premium, amounting to £ 3 9s., to be paid in advance. Loser paid this amount (£ 3 9s.) and Endsleigh gave a receipt in the name of Montrose, signed over a 2cl. stamp. Identical with G. T. Turner, Church. 10.— Southport ( Boro.).— For stealing, 20th ult,, lady's gold wristlet watch, white dial, figure 12 red, brown leather strap with gold buckle attached : blue striped suit; and £ 6 Is. 3d.- A Man, who gave the name of Harry Gordon Alden, b. about 1885, 5ft. 7in., medium build, c. fresh, h. black ( curly), clean shaven ; dress, navy blue suit, blue and white striped collar, black tie, fawn velour hat, blue socks, black boots, may have a It. coloured raincoat in his possession. Took lodgings 3rcl ult,, stated he had obtained employ- ment as a clerk at the local gasworks ( false). SHROPSHIRE. 12.— Ludlow ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences ( worthless cheque), 10th ult.— John Askew Bell, aliases Captain Bell and S. Luke, b. about 1884, oft. 6 or 7in., proportionate build, h. brown, clean shaven ; dress, bluish- grey suit, blue collar, black tie, blue Army pattern shirt, black brogue shoes, cap, officer's trench coat ( piece burnt out near front button holes), carried an ash walking- stick. Called at a hotel, 9th ult., gave the name of Captain Bell, and engaged rooms for 2 nights. On 10th ult., he made out a cheque on the hotel note- paper, drawn on the London City & Westminster Bank, 109- 111, New Oxford- street, London, for £ 10, and signed John Askew, which he induced the proprietor to cash. The cheque'was subsequently returned from the Bank marked Account Closed. Left Ludlow, 11th ult., by a hired motor car and was driven to Shrewsbury, leaving the latter place bjT hired car, and proceeded to Whitchurch, but did not stay there. He stated that he had risen to the rank of Brigadier- General during the late war, and served in the A. S. C., 29th Division ; also spoke of Sheffield and the Midlands. Appears identical with John Askew Bell, Cases Nos. 129, 13- 5- 21, and 1, 14- 3- 21. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Williams, Ludlow. EAST LOTHIAN. 142.— Haddington ( Co.).— For obtaining board and lodgings by false pretences at Dunbar.— Sidney H. Beckley ( may be false), b. about 1861, about 5ft. lOin., stout build, h. and moustache dk. ( turning grey) ; dress, blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, double linen collar, dk. tie, has a tweed overcoat which he seldom wears. Took lodgings at a hotel, 12th April, stated he was a lecturer on his way to London, and had decided to stay a few days at Dunbar. Left 14th ult., to go to Edinburgh, and failed to return. His luggage consisted of an imitation leather suit- case, which he left behind. Also left behind a woollen undervest with the name E. W. Stokoe on a piece of linen sewn on inside at back of neck, and 2 linen collars with Beckley thereon. The excuse he gave for having so little luggage was that he had lost all his effects, including his lecturing papers, in a hotel fire quite recently at Barnstaple. Devon. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Snowie, Haddington. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 143.— Neath ( Co).— For stealing £ 32 from a dwelling house at Briton Ferry. 4th inst.— Robert Leonard Evans, C. R. O. No. 6371- 21, b. 1901, 5ft. 3| in., c. fresh, h. and e. brown, 1. middle finger bent 1st joint, slightly paralysed 1. side ; dress, dk. grey suit and cap, collar and tie, black boots. A labourer ; native of Briton Ferry. Pre. con. of burglary and larceny at SWANSEA and NEATH. A youth ans-. vering the description of Evans booked to Cardiff via Briton Ferry by the 8.15 p. m. train, 4th inst., and may re- book to Durham. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Evans, Neath. 144.— Swansea ( Boro.).— For obtaining bj' false pretences ( worthless cheque), 1st inst.— Black mare pony, aged, about I2i to 13 hands, scar near fore leg just above fetlock, answers to name of Polly ; set of black harness, silver mounts ; dk. green Ralli cart, diamond shape inlaid at each side, rubber tyres, rather large for pon}'.— E. Allen, b. 1881 ' to 1883, 6ft., slight build, stoops sligitly, c. dk., h. dk. ( straight), dk. moustache, long pointed nose, thin features ; dress, dk. grey s lit, It. cap ( usually worn well over forehead), brown boots. A horse dealer ; native of London. Accompanied by Jennie Allen ( believed wife, not wanted), b. 1881. 5ft. 5in., h. brown, e. blue ; dress, blue serge skirt, green or blue sports coat ; and a girl, age 5 yrs. Talked of going to Brixham, b it believed to have gone to London. Attends horse fails, etc., and may be found in the company of low class dealers. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Swansea. 145.— Swansea ( Boro.).— For stealing ( bailee), 2 diamond rings ( recovered), on or about 1- 3- 21.— George Hunter, b. 1883, about 5ft. 7 or 8in., well built, c. fresh, h. It., e. blue, clean shaven ; dress, grey suit, soft collar and tie, brown velour hat, black boots, wearing Burberry overcoat. Obtained the rings from loser stating that he had a buyer for same and would return in about half an hour, which he failed to do. He afterwards pledged the rings in London, and later obtained a loan of £ 5 on the ticket. Has played as a professional for Hull and Portsmouth Association Football clubs. Is well known at Birmingham. Accom- panied by Tom Jones, alias Long Tom ( not wanted). They usually attend race meetings working the ' Spinning Jenny," and associate with bookmakers and low- class betting men. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Swansea. ' NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 146.— Nottingham ( City).— For obtaining credit by fraud ( long firm).— John Pack ( believed false), b. 1871, to 1876, 5ft. 6in., c. fresh, h. grey ( bald top), wears eyeglasses, large head, very small hands and feet, 1. index finger deformed, has a habit of standing with his hands behind back, looking over the top of his glasses and rising on his toes when talking. Took premises in four different districts, to be used as warehouses, inserted an advertise- ment in the local papers :— Wanted, suitable men to open up wholesale depots in other towTis, first class security indispensable— Pack's Pack's, Fisher Gate, Nottingham. Appointed applicants as managers to local branches, having first obtained substantial deposits from them, he then obtained goods from firms throughout the country, placed them in the warehouses and employed a number of females to make these and other goods into parcels which were labelled Packs 3d. Packs. On 13th ult., removed the bulk of his stock to auction marts, persuaded the auctioneer in each case to advance him £ 50 on the goods, and absconded the following day. Stated he had lived near Boston, and that he had failed for £ 2000 in a business at Manchester. Was visited by a woman ( stated to be his wife) and 3 children. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Nottingham.
