POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SE IES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1913 VOL. XXX., No 3098. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions rilating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen propi vty will be likewise inserted in one issut, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all rases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stnl/ n property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the aiticle is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaran- tenl by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of policc, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stohn property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causi s particulars concerning delinquents or stolen pro- perty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, un their apprehension or recovery, at oncc transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. IU. In all casi s the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be re- ceived not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side < if the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" arc only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if aiceptcd) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Farces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by pott within the United Kingdom. She obtained the articles on approval, representing that they were for a lady residing in the neighbourhood. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. BERKSHIRE. 4.-— Wokingham ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by a worthless cheque.— AMY CLEAVER, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes believed grey, well DURHAM. 6.— Durham ( Courity).— For bigamy.— WALTER KIRK, age 34 ( looks younger)^ height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair Erown, clean shaven, eyes blue, wrinkles on forehead, slightly round shoulders, small blue scars left side and bridge of nose; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, green cycle knickers, dark brown stockings, light cap, lace boots. A miner or farm labourer. Had with him a full roadster bicycle, roller lever brakes, 24- in. frame, black enamelled, red lines, 28- in. wheels, Cambridge tyres, No. 329975. Ab- sconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police, Durham. 7 — South Shields ( Borough).— For em- bezzling £ 50.— CHARLES FOSTER, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 ins., stout build, complexion and hair dark, clean shaven, eyes brown, only one tooth in upper jaw, has a set of artificial teeth; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat, lace boots. A bar- man ; native of South SKields. Has also been employed as a butcher. Absconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 8.— South Shields ( BoroughI.— For steal- ing, 11th ult., a pony and flat ( recovered), a set of black leather harness, large blinkers, collar well worn.— MICHAEL KING, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 ins., hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue, lame right leg, left thumb" deformed, walks badly. A rag gatherer or hawker; native of South Shields.— ROBERT GORDON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, full face, hair light. A rag gatherer or hawker; native of New- castle- on- Tvne. Both have been previously con- victed, and stay at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South Shields. ESSEX. 9. — Southend ( County).— For embezzling £ 1 17s., 30th ult.— JOHN PORTER, alios JACK JOHNSON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, bad teeth; dress, grey suit with black stripes, tweed cap. A carman; native of London. Sup- posed wanted at Birmingham, Warrant issued. 10.— Southend ( County).— For leaving his child chargeable to the Rochford Union, 9th June last.— HERBERT JAMES WRIGHT, alias HARRY FROST, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar left cheek and leg. A grocer's porter. Previously convicted at Thames and North London Police Courts, Chelmsford Quarter Sessions and County of London Sessions. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Southend. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 11.— Cheltenham ( County).— For obtaining a pair of light lace boots, size 9, " Waukeezie" on tab and inside of uppers, by false pretences.— ARTHUR POWELL, alias SMITH POWELL, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion dark, clean shaven; dress, brown coat, grey trou- sers and cap and probably the stolen boots. May seek employment as a farm labourer. Had with him a nearly new bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins. Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing from the Royal Sailor's Home, Portsea, 12th ult., a blue serge suit; 1 grey cap; 1 gold chain; 1 silver watch; 1 pair brown boots; 1 shirt; 1 collar; 1 tie; and a stick.— GEORGE JAMES STUB- BERFIELD, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes brown, scar right wrist. Is a deserter from H. M. S. Hercules. KENT. 16.— Canterbury ( City). — For obtaining JE7 2s. 6d., by worthless cheque, drawn on the London & Provincial Bank, Sheerness, by A. J. Thompson, in favour of A. Seymour Charlton, 28th ult.— A. SEYMOUR CHARLTOJST, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark ( bald on top), moustache ( close cut) dark, sharp fea- tures; wearing light grey jacket suit, white straw liat with black band, carrying a light brown mackintosh. A canvasser ; represented himself to be in the employ of the Estate Agents' Organiza- tion Bureau, 38, Conduit Street. Regent Street, London, W. Is identical with Case No. 15, 15th ult. LANARKSHIRE. 17.— Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 143 4s. 8d., between 1st August, 1912, and 31st July, 1913.— WILLIAM SOMERVILLE, age 42, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light; wearing dark jacket suit and bowler hat. A native of Coulter, Lan- arkshire. Was employed as chief salesman and country traveller for a firm of wholesale stationers and printers, Union Street, Glasgow. Warrant issued. 18.— Glasgow ( City).— For bigamy, 3rd June last.- WILLIAM HAVERN, age 30, height 5 ft. 91, ins., complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaven, very broad finger nails; dress, navy blue suit, iace boots, round felt hat, tie; strong Irish ac- cent. A blacksmith; native of Belfast. Has a large growth or swelling above right knee. Ab- sconded 18th July last. Said to have gone to England. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 19— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult., a Coronet Coventry bicycle, North Road upturned handle bars, Clipper tyres, rubber pedals, black enamelled, lined red and green, 28- in. wheels, plated rims, tflack centres, 26- in. frame, roller lever brakes.— ALBERT KEARNS, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven; wearing light jacket, knee breeches, light green tie, cycling stockings, boots. Warrant issued. 20.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For living partly on the earnings of prostitution.— LESLIE JEF- FERY or JEFFREY, age 22, height 5 ft. 5i ins., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, small scar over left eye. A salesman; has also worked for a gramophone company at Manchester. May be accompanied by a woman. Absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. ' 21.~ Lincoln ( City).— For stealing £ 5 19s. 6d. and a postal order for 4s. 6d., made pay- able to the Master of the Lincoln Workhouse on 28th April, 1913.— STEPHEN REDDINGTON, age 53, height 5 ft, 6 ins., round face, heavy mous- tache ( turning grey) brown; dress, brown tweed suit. Has served in the Army. Was an inmate of the Lincoln Workhouse and employed in the Workbouse Master's office. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Lincoln. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 22.— Daventry ( County).— For sacrilege and • stealing a silver paten ( recovered) between 17th and 23rd ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., hair, slight moustache and eyes brown, appearance of a butler or footman, well spoken; wearing dark brown suit, dark felt hat, tie and shoes. Stated he had been in the Navy. Had with him a bicycle and is believed to be a travel- 1 ling church thief. Information to Supt. Birrill, Daventry. NORTHUMBERLAND. 23. Berwick- on- Tweed ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) a road racer bicycle, 24- in. black enamelled and lined frame, Victa saddle, upturned handle bars, North Road pattern, black grips, old bell and tool- bag, 26 by ljj wheels, yel- low cane rims, Clipper Speed tyres, rat- trap pedals, coaster hub, back- pedalling brake.— A man who gave the name of W. J. McLEMMEN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, heavy moustache dark brown, eyes hazel; wearing blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. Photograph can be seen on application. Stated he was travel- ling with linen and drapery for a London firm. Information to the Chief Constable, Berwick- on- Tweed. OXFORDSHIRE. 24.— Caversham County).— For embezzle- ment, 24th July last.— GEORGE LYNN, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion, hair ( inclined to wavy) and slight moustache dark, white spot right side of nose; dress, dark tweed suit, brown tip, blucher boots. Supposed a native of Ripley, Surrey. Has been employed as a journeyman baker. Absconded 6th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Page, Caversham. SHROPSHIRE. 25. Oswestry ( County).— For embezzling 15s. 6d., 9th ult.— CHARLES CORBETT, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark trousers, grey cap. A labourer; native of Oswestry. Last employed as a carter for a mineral water firm. Has worked at a colliery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hamlet, Oswestry. 5 TA FFORDSHIRE. 26.— Burton- on- Trent ( County).- For stealing ( trick), 20th ult., a 9- ct. gold engagement ring, M. E. B. engra\ ed thereon; 1 long gold chain; 1 white silk blouse; 1 do. handkerchief.— A WOMAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown; wearing large black hat with feather, long grey coat with collar and cuffs, silk handkerchief, button boots, long string of corals and large earrings. A gipsy. She obtained the articles on the pretence of telling fortunes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Moss, Burton- on- Trent. 27.— Tettenhall ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a Lion bicycle, 24- in. frame, 28- in. whee's, black enamelled, usual parts plated, square handle bars, rat- trap pedals, rim brakes, metal pumo, tool- bag, 31st May last at Essington.— RICHA LD BEVAN, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion sallow, hair and eyes brown, clean shaven, K. Beavon right breast, eagle and star left breast, Britannia and wolf's head upper right arm, flower, leaf, Robert, crucifix, R. B., woman in tights, and flowers right forearm; dress, dark grey mixture suit, light grey cap, lace boots. A native of Llan- samlet, Glam. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Tettenhall. SURREY. 28. — Woking ( County).— For failing to observe the conditions of her recognizances, having been bound over on two charges of obtaining goods and money by false pretences— CHARLOTTE HAR- FORD, age 14, height 4 ft. 10 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ginger, eyes blue. She calls at houses with lace for sale and states her mother is a widow and ill; very plausible, poorly dressed. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marks, Woking. 29.— Reigate ( Borough).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a B. S. A. road racer bicycle, 23- in. drop frame, enamelled green, free wheel, North Road handle bars, pull- up lever brakes, plated carrier on back, large patch front tyre.— ALFRED SIMMONS, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., hair ( glossy) dark, clean shaven, bad front teeth; dress, brown suit with light stripes, green felt hat, shoes wore a watch in leather wristlet on left wrist. He stayed at a coffee tavern from 15th to 23rd ult., and absconded without paying; left behind an Insurance card, " A. J. Simmons, Wheeler Farm, Wiston, Steyning," and " Chalet, Elstead, Godalming," thereon. Warrant issued. 30.— Reigate L( Borough).— tor stealing a brace and Morse drill, 21st ult.— W. MADDE- SON, age about 16, height about 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, large scar back of one ear; dress, dark suit and cap. He took lodgings 18tli ult., stating he had obtained work at a local engineer's. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Reigate. SUSSEX ( West). 31.— Worthing ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 8s. 8d. by a worthless cheque, No. A. 751545, drawn on the London & South Western Bank, Great Portland Street Branch.— — HACKETT, alius PRESTON, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair red, eyes brown. Has with her a female child about 9 weeks old. About 6 months ago she took a bungalow in this district, accompanied by a man ( not wanted), age about 35, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion pale, full face, clean shaven. They booked to London Bridge on 5th ult., and had with them 2 dogs ( 1 Aber- deen terrier the other a Scotch terrier), and 3 cats in a basket. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowler, Worthing. WORCES TERSHIRE. 32.— Worcester ( County).— For unlaw- fully taking a girl out of the possession and against the" will of her father, 25th ult.— CORNELIUS BUTLER, age 41, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, mole right cheek, hair ( long fringe with curls in front) dark, ears pierced. Uses the name of GEORGE HOLLAND, Leices- ter. He travels in a caravan, gold gilded, figures of 2 birds in front, 2 half birds on sides, George Holland, Leicester, thereon. Description of girl: PHCEBE JONES, age 14, complexion fresh, round face, 3 rows of red beads around neck, right middle finger- nail split; dress, dark blouse, lace on sleeves, dark skirt, light print apron, trimmed lace, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constabls, County Police, Worcester. YORKSHIRE ( North Ridin i). 33.— Malton ( County).— For obtaining a bay mare, 4 years, 15 hands 2 ins., small scar on off foreleg, long tail, by a worthless cheque.— I. WOOD, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexiou and hair ( bald on top, turning grev) dark, clean shaven; dress, blue serge suit, hard hat, lace boots with studs in soles. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thornton, Malton. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 34.— Sheffield ( City).— For stealing ( servant) £ 11; 1 brief bag; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, No. 176260, white dial, flowered, black numerals, engraved cases, in leather wrist strap; 1 dull gold scarf pin, oval centre, set several diamonds, 24th ult.— ZOEY McDERMOTT, age 18, height 5 ft. or 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar under chin, nose has been broken, American accent, stooping gait; dress, grey coat, skirt, cloth bodice, shoes with grey kid uppers; stated she has never worn corsets, and had been accustomed to ranch riding. A native of California or Arizona. Warrant issued. 35.— Sheffield ( City)— For stealiug from his lodgings, 12th ult., a silver watch; 1 do. guard; 1 medal.— JAMES SMITH, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion dark, hair and mous- tache black, turning grey, scar left side of nose, 3rd right finger crushed; dress, black coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, blue muffler with white stripes, dark grey cap, lace boots with rub- ber soles. Stated he was an electrical engineer. Warrant issued. 36.— Sheffield ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 27th ult., a lady's 15- ct. gold dress ring, set 5 brilliants; 1 lady's dress ring, set 5 rubies ( 1 missing) ; 1 lady's gold dress ring, set 3 emer- alds; 1 do., set 2 pearls and a diamond; 1 plain 22- ct. gold signet ring, E. W. engraved thereon; 1 22- ct. gold guard, lady's long bar and 3- link pattern.— ARTHUR WILSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaven; dress, grey suit, straw hat. Stated he was employed at a local branch of the London & Provincial Bank, requested permission to wash, after which he absconded. Warrant issued. 37.— Sheffield ( City).— For housebreaking and stealing, 27th ult., a lady's fawn- coloured raincoat, dark grey overcoat, George IV. five- shilling piece, dated 1819 or 1821, made into a brooch, brown leather sovereign purse, etc.— 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. PROPERTY STOLEN. CUMBERLAND. 88.— Whitehaven ( County).— For bigamy.— PAUL JONES HANSEN, alias LOUIS IIAN SEN and PAUL SALISCH, a German, age 33. height about 5 ft.
