All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted tn one issue of the POLICE GAZUTTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious off ences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6a. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. fl. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaran- teed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him. the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. a. 10. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen pro- perty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at oncc transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be re- ceived not later than hoon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 1! 2. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT l — Convict Supervision Office — Licence revoked for failing to comply with the conditions of same.— HENRY JAMES COATES, Office No. S. 161972, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, large scar right of neck, " H " right and " C. H." left fore- arm. Sentenced at County of London Sessions, 7th February, 1911, to 2 years' detention in a Borstal Institution, and was released on licence 7th February, 1913, to the care of the Borstal Association. He found employment but ab- eoonded about the end of April last, having stolen £ 3. If arrested a telegram or telephonic com- munication should be sent to the Governor, Pen- tonville Prison, who will send an escort for him. Licence expires 6th August, 1913, after which date he must not be arrested. 2.— C Division.— For obtaining 3s. by falsa pretences.— ELLEN ROGERS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion pale, hair ( frizzy) grey, eyes dark, bad teeth; dress, rough brown tweed coat and skirt, black hat. She calls upon persons in answer to advertisements, gives a false address and obtains money for the purpose of paying her return railway fare. Warrant issued. 8.— L Division.— For malicious wounding, 4th inst., by throwing a table knife in a restau- rant, whereby the injured man's left eye was com- pletely destroyed.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 10 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( cut rather short) dark brown; dress, supposed blue suit, may be wearing a hard felt hat or straw hat. Supposed a native of North of England. Attends race meetings, prob- ably as a bookmaker's tout. Was accompanied by three other men ( not wanted). Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For obtaining buckles and cloth by false pretences.— W. PATTERSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion and hair dark, moustache iron grey; dress, dark suit, grey cap, lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued. ABERDEENSHIRE. 5.— Aberdeen ( County).— For stealing two bicycles, 27th and 28th ult.— WILLIAM HOL- DEN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, short thick neck, hair ( cut very short) dark, clean shaven, no teeth, lips sunken, chin protrudes, extensively tattooed both arms, includ- ing women and a Red Indian, with trees in back- ground ; dress, dark grey suit, dark cap, lace boots, may be wearing a light grey muffler. A tramping blacksmith. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police, Aberdeen. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— For stealing between 18t" h and 15th ult., a Postal Order for 18s. 6d., No. 3/ U 543757, issued at Newmilns; 1 pair of wire- cutting pliers; 1 3- ft. rule; 1 screw driver and a tool- case, shape of chisel handle.— FRANK H. PEARCE, Office No. 67- 10, see Cases 19, 27th September and 13, 4th October, 1912, age 27, height 5 ft. 10j ins., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) brown, two females' heads left forearm, Buffalo Bill right forearm, ring left middle finger; dress, blue serge suit, light waterproof, dark cap. A showman; native of Cheltenham. Has served in the Army and Navy. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Ayrshire. CHESHIRE. l.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a lady's gold watch, " Fattorini" on dial, in green wrist strap; 1 lady's fine rolled- gold neckchain, cross attached ; 1 black purse; 1 dark brown leather purse; 1 pair boots size 7, narrow patent leather toes.— JACK McFAR- LAND, alias ALICK McEWEN, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion and hair dark, broad forehead, limps, one middle finger missing, life- belt, Father, Mother, Alice, and Raymond right forearm, plain ring inside left forearm, ini- tials therein; dress, brown dungaree suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Altrincham. 8.— Macclesfield ( County).— For stealing, 14th or 15th inst., at Wilmslow, a heavy frieze fleecy single- breasted overcoat, square pockets with flaps, black lining, black bone buttons; 1 green- ish grey tweed cap; a return half ticket Manches- ter to Wilmslow, dated 14th May, 1913; and 2s. or 3s.— ARTHUR HENRY SPENCER, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ina., complexion dark or sallow, hair and moustache dark, receding chin, 2 abscess marks right side of jaw. A fairly good pianist. He left behind a hard hat, " Carrington, Manufacturers, Whiteley k Sons, Halifax," on lining; and a fawn- colour mackintosh, " Wallam, Supwards," in ink on inner side. CUMBERLAND. 9.— Carlisle ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a Canadian money order for £ 5; and 2s. 6d. — ERNEST WOOD, alias BEN WOOD, age 17, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., good build, complexion rather sallow, hair dark brown; well spoken, men- tally weak. When last seen was wearing a dark grey knicker suit, belt at back of jacket, soft flan- nel collar, grey stockings, boots. Had in his possession a lady's Imperial Arthur bicycle. DENBIGHSHIRE. 10.— Colwyn Bay ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a drab- coloured mackintosh ( recovered). — CHARLES LANCASTER, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair fair, moustache sandy, rather large thin nose; wearing a dark coat and vest, trousers of lighter coloured material, cap, lace boots ( much worn); addicted to drink. A native of Cheshire. Usually works at motor garages, cleaning cars or as an ostler, and is well- known in most of the N. Wales coast towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Beresford, Colwyn Bay. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Renishaw ( County).— For stealing from their lodgings, 27th or 28th ult., at Brighton, a woollen shirt with red stripes: 1 brown muffler; 1 white linen collar, size 16; 1 red and white tie. — ALBERT LEE ( supposed false), age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, high cheek bones, long nose, pointed chin, hair and eyes dark, clean shaven, crossed flags, woman, hand in hand, and heart left forearm; dress, blue jacket and vest, brown trousers, grey cap, brown boots, blacked. — THOMAS LEAMING ( supposed false), age about 20, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue; dress, dark grey jacket and vest ( horse's head on vest buttons), brown trou- sers, grey cap, blucher boots, silver ring left little finger. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( oonti* ued).— 12.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing from a common lodging house, 12th March last, 2 bed sheets ( recovered).— ELIZA RICHARD- SON, alias COOPER and CUTTS, age 47, height 5 ft. 2^ ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown. Native of Great Bridge, Staffs. Stays in common lodging houses and furnished rooms. 13.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences, between 27th ult. and 7th inst.— FRED MARRIOTT, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion very fair, clean shaven, hair brown; dress, light mix- ture jacket and trousers ( old), black band on arm of jacket, black waistcoat, dark grey overcoat, light cap, white muffler, lace boots. Stated he be- longed to Sheffield, and that he had worked at Kiveton Park, and other collieries in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and had been discharged from the Army at Newcastle. He came to Chester- field 27th ult., took lodgings, stating he had ob- tained work locally. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DURHAM. 14.— Castle Eden ( County).— For embezzl- ing £ 13 10s. 5id., 1st inst.— NICHOLAS PEL- L1NI, an Italian, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes brown; dress, dark jacket suit, green hat, black tie, shoes, carried a light mackintosh. Had in his possession a re- volver. A confectioner or ice- cream vendor. May seek employment as a waiter. Warrant issued. 15.— Castle Eden ( County).— For obtaining, 26th April, 1913, by false pretences, a brass cor- net, Douglas make, double safety water valve, slight dent on bell and one near to where the valves join the body, has been recently polished. — GEORGE HENRY BROWN, ALIAS WYNNE and WILLCOCKS, Office No. 169- 13, age 41, height 5 ft. 2£ ins., complexion sallow, hair, mous- tache and eyes brown, left forefinger missing; scar over right eye, limps slightly; dress, black striped jacket and vest, blue trousers, lace boots, blue silk neckerchief. A collier or labourer; native of Staffordshire. Warrant issued. 16.— Castle Eden ( County).— For stealing at Horden, 25th February, 1913, a 9- ct. gold dress ring, mauve- coloured stone in centre; 1 silver curb pattern albert; and 5s. 9d.— JOHN Mc- FARLANE, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion and eyes dark, hair dark brown, clean shaven, heart and 4 letters left forearm, lifebuoy with cross in centre on right forearm, cut scar on lip, bad teeth, end of 2nd left finger missing, left foot cork, limps; dress, navy blue jacket suit, dark cap. A fitter; native of Glasgow. States he has been an engineer on steam fish trawlers; also that he was a naval pensioner. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thompson, Castle Eden. 17.— Gateshead { Borough).— For bigamy.— JOSEPH BELL, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8i ins., rather stout build, hair ( thin on top) light brown, clean shaven, several upper teeth missing, top lip sunken, cross, crossed hands, " In memory of my dear Mother " on one arm, rose, shamrock, thistle, woman and Adelaide on other; addicted to drink; dress, brown suit, cap. A miner; has served in the Army. Warrant issued. 1H — Gateshead ( Borough).— For stealing ( agent) 2s.— SAMUEL A. MASON, age 34, height about 5 ft. 10 ins., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes crossed; of Jewish appearance. A photographer's canvas- ser; native of Edinburgh. Is accompanied by his wife and 2 girls, ages 10 and 2 years respectively. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Gateshead. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County).— For deserting his wife and child, leaving them chargeable to the Union, 2nd January last.— ALFRED WINDLEY ( see Case " No. 20, 14th March last). Has been recently employed at a farm at Lenham, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 20.— Southend ( County).— For demanding money by menaces.— STEPHEN BLUNDELL, Office No. 458- 13, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown; small scar left side of face. A commercial traveller; may be found at Rowton Houses. Warrant issued. 21 .— Southend ( County).— For stealing £ 10, 9th inst.— MARY EMILY SCUTCHINGS, age 16 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, round face; dress, blue serge costume, large light- coloured hat. A general servant; native of Southend. May be found in company of soldiers or sailors. Warrant issued. 22.— Southend ( County).— For stealing £ 1 from his lodgings.— BRUNO BEAUMONT, alias BEAUMENT, a German, age about 26," height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., stout build, complexion dark, hair dark brown ; dress, blue serge suit, greenish soft hat. A waiter. Had in his possession a brown leather dressing case, containing a black dress suit. Absconded 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Southend. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 23. — Neath ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings). — GWILYM HAYDEN GRIFFITHS, alias ED- WARDS and JONES, Office No. 1908- 99 ( see Cases 20, 15th November, 1912, and 21, 11th April last), age 50, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, scar front of forehead, cut mark back of neck, scar bridge of nose, blue mark back right middle finger, blue coal mark back left hand, wrist etc.; dress, dark coat and vest, blue trousers, black tie, dark cap, black- rimmed spectacles. Evans, Neath. 24 — Cardiff ( City).— For larceny.— FRED BAKER, alias VICTOR GORDON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, London accent; of smart appearance; dress, light small plaid suit, green cap, long fawn and green mixture overcoat, brown kid gloves. A theatrical artiste. Warrant issued. 25.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing ( servant) £ 40.— JOHN DA VIES, age 15, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, blue serge suit, grey cap, soft collar. He was sent to a bank, 7th inst., to cash a cheque, received £ 35 gold and £ 5 silver and absconded. A native of Cardiff. He expressed a desire to go to sea. Warrant issued. 26.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money bv false pretences.— CHARLES MILLWARD, alias C. HORTON, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair and bushy eyebrows black, clean shaven; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat. He travels the country, poses as a representative of a wholesale druggists, obtains orders and money and then decamps. Warrant issued. 27 — Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— ELIZABETH STEELE, alias LIZZIE VIGAR and COLLINS, age 42, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar over eyebrows, end of left forefinger slightly deformed; dress, long black jacket, mauve colour skirt, round grey hat. A native of Cork. She calls upon solicitors and emigration agents, represents that a large sum of money has been left her by a deceased relative in America, books a passage and then induces the agent to advance her a small sum. Photograph can be seen on applica- tion. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 28.— Chipping Sod bury ( CW » « y).— For stealing a pair of binocular field glasses in leather sling case, maker Zeiss thereon; and a green fish- skin compass case with silver hinge.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion ruddy, hair brown, moustache light or sandy, be- lieved ruptured; dress, dark suit, shabby, grey cap, yellow muffler with green spots, light lace boots. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. HAMPSHIRE. 29.— Fareham ( County).— For stealing a brown leather portmanteau, initials T. F. W. there- on, at Cosham, 27th ult.— JOHN DAVIS, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, addicted to drink, an inveterate cigarette smoker; wearing dark clothing, cap, white shoes. A native of Little- ham pton, Sussex. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. HEREFORDSHIRE. 30.— Weobley { County).— For assault and escaping from custody ( at Canon Pyon, 4th inst.). — WILLIAM BROOKES, alias THOMAS BROOKES, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair light; dress, black jacket and vest, riding breeches, stockings, dark cap, heavy nailed boots. A native of London. Had with him a small white terrier bitch, answers to the name of Judy. i Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Weaver, Weobley. KENT. 81.— Chatham { Comity).— For obtaining 88 yards of white cotton duck, by false pretences.—- WILLIAM HARRIS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes brown, very short neck; dress, grey suit, black soft or bowler hat, old lace boots. He travels the country repairing shop blinds. Is accom- panied by his wife, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 2 ins.; wearing dark velvet cloak, black motor hat; and 2 girls, ages 7 years and 15 months re- spectively. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rhodes, Chatham. 32.— Sandwich ( County).— For obtaining money, etc., by false pretences.— ALFRED LAM- BERT, age 52, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, well educated, plausible manner; dress, navy blue suit, cap or hard hat.— SUSAN GRACE LAMBERT, age 39, rather tall, com- plexion sallow, blotchy, hair black; dress, dark mixture costume, trimmed black braid, velvet toque. A native of Australia. Accompanied by their four children, ages 15, 14, 12 and 11 years respectively. Warrant issued. 33 — Sandwich { County).— For failing to- report.— Licence holder SIDNEY JAMES SHIR-' LEY,, alias SHERLEY, Office No. 1934- 04, age 31, height 5 ft. 5J ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, mole right side of neck, centre of forehead, scar back of neck, back of right fore- finger, part of ring left middle finger. A labourer; native of Acton. Sentenced, Middlesex Sessions, 28th November, 1908, to 5 years' penal servitude- and 3 years' police supervision for larceny. Re- manet of former sentence expires 16th August, 1914. Supervision expires 27th November, 1916.. g. i. 214. ( Arrest also sought in the Metropolitan- Police District for warehousebreaking). Stone, Sandwich. 34.— Sevenoaks ( County).— For obtaining a. four- wheel dog- cart by false pretences at Shoreham. — FRANK ROWLAND, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue. Has been convicted at Oxford City Police Court of obtaining goods by false pretences, and Wells Quarter Sessions for larceny of cycles. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Sevenoaks. 85.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing, between 19th and 31st ult., a dark brown suit, makers- Dean & Co., Southampton, on tab and buttons of trousers; 1 dark green mixture suit; 2 pairs of boots ( 1 patent leather toe- caps, 1 brown, size 7) ;. 1 soft felt hat, Vandyke colour, Dunn, Southamp- ton, inside; 3 shirts, makers Whiteaway & Laid- low ( 1 yellow silk, 2 soft cotton); 1 9- ct. gold curb watch chain, gold star pendant attached, T. B. raised on same.— WALTER THRELFALL, age- 24, height 5 ft. 7- J ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, several small scars spinal column, linear scar 1 in. long back left forearm supposed wearing the stolen clothing. A carpen- ter ; native of Fleetwood. Deserter from King's^ Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 36.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, a silver match- box, S. B. en^ graved on outside; 1 pair boots, size 8, recently repaired, boot protector on toe and heel of each boot; 1 Kropp razor in case, black handle; 1 safety razor in brown box, German make; 1 18- ct. gold.' memoriam ring, |- in. wide, M. M. engraved on outside, inscription inside, " In memory of Mrs- Ann Kemble, who died 1820." THOMP- SON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 to 9 ins., com- plexion fresh, clean shaven, artificial teeth, front upper jaw rather prominent, hair turning grey; dress, light grey suit, fancy vest, green facings, light grey soft felt hat, lace boots; appearance of a butler or indoor servant. He took lodgings, 29th ult., and left 30th ult. Stated he was employed at the Post Office. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. 87.— Margate ( Borough).— For obtaining 2s. 6d. by false pretences, 10th ult.— J. W. MAYER, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown, sharp nose, of good address; dress, green striped overcoat, belt and button at back, dark trousers, bowler hat, dark tie, lace boots. He visits schools, colleges, etc., represents himself to be an agent for an Ideal Cookery Book, has with him a specimen copy, obtains money and gives printed receipts signed J. W. Mayer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. FRIDAY, JUNE IS, 1918 T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE.
