THE POLICE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 9, 1913. VOL. XXX., No. 3064. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious off ences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaran- teed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen pro- perty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be re- ceived not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BRECONSHIRE. 15.— Ystradgynlais [ County).— For steal- ing £ 30, 25th ult.— HENRIETTA " WILLIAMS, alias PAGE, age 18 or 19, medium build and height, complexion pale, hair ( worn in plait down back) dark brown, eyes brown, turns her feet out- wards, of smart appearance; dress, blue serge cos- tume, collar of coat trimmed old gold or dark yellow, black felt hat, trimmed grey and red feathers, brown lace boots, carried a fawn- colour mackintosh and brown bag with strap. May be found at picture palaces or variety halls. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Brecon. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 16.— Newport Pagnell ( County).— For being concerned with HARRY HUMPHRIES ( in custody) in obtaining potatoes, etc., by false pre- tences.— JOHN SLOW, alias SLOUGH, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., good build, hair and moustache black, peculiar gait; dress, blue serge jacket suit, bowler hat. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued,).- CHESHIRE. 17.— Wallasey { Borough).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences ( bogus directory).— ARTHUR WHEATLEY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, long face; wearing a dark over- coat, hard felt hat, collar and tie. He called on the complainant and stated that he represented " Fulton's Commercial Directory, New Bridge Street, London," and received 10s. for three inser- tions of an advertisement in the above directory. It was aiterwards ascertained that the directory caased to exist 15 years ago. He gave a printed receipt. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Wallasey. DERBYSHIRE. 18.— A / f r e t O It ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Morton 3rd ult.— JOHN SEDGWICK ( supposed false), age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion very blotchy, hair light; dress, fawn- colour rain coat, grey suit, lace boots. He sells tickets, printed " The Peoples' Accident Legal Aid Society, London," thereon, and states it entitles the owner to com- pensation in case of accident. Warrant issued. 19.— A / f r B t O It ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Pilsley, 2nd ult.— JOHN SCOTT ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full red face, believed light moustache; dress, grey overcoat, black trousers ( shabby), black and red check vest. He sells tickets, printed " The Peoples' Accident Legal Aid Society, Fleet Street, London," thereon, which state that the owner is entitled to free legal aid, etc. Warrant issued. 20.— Al fret on ( County).— For stealing a silver albert, large oblong links, with 3 small links be- tween ; 3 silver medals ( 1 Derbvshire Football As- sociation ; 2 oval, one of which opens in centre) attached, at Clay Cross, 22nd ult.— GEORGE FINCH, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair and eyes brown ; wearing dark trousers, white muffler, cap, light lace boots. A native of Basford, Notts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fennell, Alfreton. 21.— Ashbourne ( County).— For larceny at Hognaston, 18th ult.— CAROLINE BOOTH, alias DICKENSON, age 44, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fresh, rather long face, hair brown; dress, black jacket, brown skirt, black straw hat, black apron. Well known at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Ashbourne. DURHAM. 22.— Bishop Auckland ( County).— For obtaining 3 pairs of corsets by false pretences, 18th ult., a woman who gave the name of LONGE, age 22 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 to 4 ins., complexion fair, hair light brown, sharp features; dress, navy blue serge costume, blue tam- o'- shanter; sometimes wears a long greenish coat and gold- rimmed spectacles. She visits shops and asks that goods be supplied on approval to some well- known local lady. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daley, Bishop Auckland. 23.— Stockton ( County).— For embezzling £ 12 12s. 6d., 31st March last.— JOHN HENRY OGLESBY, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes blue, clean shaven, one thumb slightly deformed, blue mark on one middle finger; dress, light grey jacket, fancy grey vest with black buttons, dark trousers with light stripes, light cap, old brown leggings, lace boots. A native of Newcastle- on- Tyne. Recently em- ployed as a milk salesman; has been a tram driver, auxiliary postman and groom. Is a reservist of the Royal Field Artillery. Attends race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Stockton- on- Tees. ESSEX. 21.— Grays ( County).— For murder of her child, age 4 months, at South Ockenden, 29th ult.— ELIZA MAYNARD, alias SWANNELL, age 27 to 29, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., stout build, com- plexion swarthy, hair ( about 5 ins. long) black, eyes dark brown, pug- nose, distended, one or more teeth missing, walks slovenly, appearance of a gipsy or half- caste; dress, short dark grey jacket with large sleeves, black voile skirt, band of silk or sateen around bottom, black skirt under, pink flannellette petticoat, fawn- colour corsets marked " Romford Union," black hat trimmed black silk ribbon, bow left side, lace boots. May endeavour to obtain field work. Stays at workhouses and common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Grays. 25.— Southend ( County).— For embezzling 9s. WEST, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( short) brown, clean shaven, slight cast in one eye; wearing dark clothes, scarf and cap, old boots. A door- keeper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Southend. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 26.— Neath ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) £ 3 and a grocery purchase book at Cymmer, 26th ult. ALBERT SAVAGE, alias EDWIN PITMAN, age 15, height 4 ft. 11 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark brown, eyes blue, one right upper tooth broken; dress, dark brown suit, dark and red muffler, dark overcoat with green stripes, strap at back, dark brown cap, lace boots. A collier. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Evans, County Police, Neath. HAMPSHIRE. 27.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 4th ult., 2 silver watches; 2 do. chains; 1 gold pin; and a coat and vest.—- ROSE WARD, alias LANE, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, pointed features, high cheek bones, hair dark brown; dress, blue skirt, black fur coat, short and tight- fitting, green straw hat, trimmed black chiffon, lace boots. Absconded 4th ult. with her 3 children ( 2 girls age 12 and 6 respectively, and a boy age 9). May be accom- panied by her husband, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion sallow, thin features, hair and mous- tache grey; dress, grey overcoat, dark shabby suit, bowler hat ( wanted at Ramsgate for attempted fraud). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. KENT. 28.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., at Lydd Camp, a new Hudson Standard model cycle, enamelled black, gold lined, 28 by li- in. wheels, plated rims, Dunlop tyres, upturned handle bars, roller lever brakes, mudguards, Ly- cett saddle, No. D. 38996 on seat lug, Lucas Holo- phote lamp, " Noble " stamped on top,.— G. E. T. PULLMAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, slightly bow- legged. A native of Torquay. He belongs to the 6th Dragoon Guards and was wearing a khaki Service dress. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Ashfcrrl 29.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For embez- zling £ 24 lis. 8d.— FREDERICK C. MORTON, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion pale, hair ( wavy) light, eyes brown, sailing ship on chest, several marks on forearms; dress, navy blue suit, grey or greenish cap. May be accompanied by a woman ( a music- hall artiste). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crowhurst, Sittingbourne. 30.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences, 21st ult.— T. TUCKWELL, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, prominent teeth; dress, grey overcoat and trousers, brown jacket, check vest, of smart appearance. He took lodgings, 2nd ult., stated he was employed by a firm of solicitors and was making inquiries re- specting a divorce case; on 21st ult. he caused an express letter to be sent to his landlady asking for £ 2, afterwards received the amount and ab- sconded. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 81, 14th June, 1912. Warrant issued. 31.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a blue lounge suit with light stripes, " Baron^ High Street, Folkestone," on tab of coat; I 1 green mixture overcoat, green leather- covered buttons ( 2 missing), " Lock's key to value" on tab; 1 pair button boots, size 8; 1 pair grey suede lined gloves.— WILLIAM WHITFIELD, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., slight build, com- plexion and hair ( thin on top) dark, clean shaven, one front upper tooth missing; may be wearing the stolen clothing and have with him a brown leather brief bag. A kitchen porter. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Folkestone. 32.— Margate ( Borough).— For obtaining by fraud, 9th inst., a Triumph motor cycle, 1912 pattern, free engine model, Clincher tyres, Tri- umph transfer on head and tank, Lucas head- light, 3- note horn, new throughout.— WALTER S. BAIRD, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, clean shaven; of good address. He affixed an identification plate bearing registered number F. N. 1542. Is accom- panied by a man about the same age and height as himself. Has been residing at Herne Bay during the last 9 months, has visited neighbouring towns and obtained goods in a similar manner. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Manchester ( City) — For larceny.— HENRY WAYTE, alias ADAMS, Office No. i! 475- 09 ( see Illustrated Circular 96, Fig. 33), age 45, height 5 ft. 9£ ins., complexion fresh, hair ( partly bald) brown, eyes blue, scar outer angle left eye, wart inside left hand. Represents him- self to be an agent of " The Dreadnought" As- surance Co., London Road, Liverpool, or the British Key and National Registry Co. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. LEICES TERSHIRE. 34.— Leicester ( County).— For stealing ( servant) at Birstall, 2nd inst.,' a silver watch and 1 lion shilling brooch ( recovered) and Is 6d. — WILLIAM FIELDS, age 17, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 ins., round shoulders, complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar top of forehead and under left eye; dress, dark mixture suit, scarf, cap, old light boots ( right repaired with wire). A farm labourer; native of Gainsborough. Pre- viously convicted at Gainsborough and Boston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowley, County Police, Leicester. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 35— Abergavenny ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 21st ult., 8s.— MORGAN FREESTONE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( turned up at ends) dark brown, supposed cut scar on neck and badly rup- tured ; dress, dark suit and overcoat, grey cap, lace boots. A native of Sheffield. He stated that he received the above injuries about 6 years' ago whilst in the Metropolitan Police, from which he now receives a pension of 8s. per week, calls at police stations, exhibits his pension papers and solicits monetary assistance. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 36.— Peterborough ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 1 gold bracelet ( recovered); 1 pair of gold earrings, round disc shape, with 6 small knobs on edge; 1 gold locket, engraved back and front, one side having a small plain ring in centre, small piece of hair inside. ALLEN alias JOHN THOMPSON, WILLIAMS, etc., Office No. 1463- 99, for photograph and descrip- tion see Illustrated Circular 66, Fig. 10, and Case 17, 18th ult. He took lodgings and represented himself to be a draughtsman at the General Post Office. Warrant issued. 37.— Peterborough yCity).— For leaving his wife and 3 children chargeable to the Peter- borough Union, 26th ult.— JAMES HARRY BALDOCK, age 28, height 5 ft. 8£ ins., com- plexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes grey, bridge of nose recently broken, " H," dot and man's head left forearm, walks erect, '< f intemperate habits; dress, brown jacket suit, cap, muffler, and blucher boots. A labourer. Warrant issued. 38.— Peterborough ( City).— For obtaining 30s. by worthless cheque, 26th ult.— Dr. S. E. CLARKE, age about 54, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, long nose, thin face, clean shaven, rather high cheek bones, slightly round shouldered; wear- ing a dark blue suit, black hard hat, glace kid button boots ( patent leather toe- caps). He took rooms in a high- class residential part of the town, stated he was a retired doctor, called on different tradesmen and purchased small quantities of goods. Later he purchased from the same people large quantities ( chiefly jewellery) and tendered in payment a worthless cheque on the London City & Midland Bank, Balsall Heath, Birmingham, receiving the above amount as change. His luggage consists of a brown canvas trunk with wooden slats, 1 new brown leather dressing- case covered with drab canvas, 1 brown leather silk hat case and a brown leather port- manteau. Is accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age about 20, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, eyes blue, scar on forehead; wearing a dark blue tailor- made costume, large black hat; usually carries a walking stick; of smart attractive appearance. A native of Yaxley, Hunts. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Peter- borough. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. States he was discharged from the ship " Grontofd Hag- smund," Norway, at Cardiff, about 6 weeks ago. Had in his possession a 6- chambered revolver, calibre Winchester 44, Smith & Wesson American make, dated 1878, old pattern, 6 Eley cartridges, 44, " S. & W.
