POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 3024. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF IHI POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enabl* action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents Sr stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on oni side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a cohering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " art only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 5.— R Division.- For stealing £ 1 14s. lid., 5th inst.— JACK STIRLING, a Scotchman, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache black, left foot artificial, limps slightly; dress, blue serge suit, fawn- colour mackin- tosh, " J. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For uttering a forged cheque for £ 265 on the Capital & Counties Bank, Petersfield, and obtain- ing two transfers for 200 shares in the Mount Oxide Mine, Ltd., and £ 63.— JOHN WILLIAM WHEELER, age 28 ( looks older), height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eves < n- ey; sometimes wears rimless glasses; dress, blue serge jacket suit, grey rainproof overcoat, dark tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. BERKSHIRE. 8.-— Newbury [ County).— For obtaining £ 50 by false pretences, 9th inst.— MAJOR ARTHUR OLIPHANT LUTTRELL, alias PHILIP ANTRO- BUS and ARTHUR OILPHANT, age 40 to 45, height 6 ft., complexion pale, sliehtly pock- marked, hair brown, heavy moustache waxed at ends, well educated; dress, blue flannel suit with stripes, grey and white overcoat, white wollen muffler, brown soft hat, fawn- colour spats. Had with him a brown suit case, L. R. M. in black outside, contain- ing handkerchiefs, " L. R. Majendie" thereon. He called upon a clergyman, represented that he was at college with him, related several incidents which occurred there; also stated that he was employed in the Service on the North West Fron- tier of India. Before leaving he wrote out several cheques on note paper on Stuckey's Bank, Bide- ford Branch, obtained the above amount and ab- sconded 10th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gamble, Newbury. 9.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 19s. by a worthless cheque, 8th inst.— C. S. ORRIN, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue; wearing greenish grey rainproof coat, appearance of having served in the Army. He called at a shop, selected a side of bacon which he ordered to be delivered at a false address, tendered in payment a cheque, No. D. 86663, on the National Provincial Bank, Savoy Court, Strand, W. C., for £ 4 5s., drawn by J. B. Stoneham, in favour of C. S. Orrin, and received £ 2 19s. change, cheque since returned marked " No account," and is one of a book which was lost or stolen in July last in London, Nos. from D. 86653 / 97. Is identical with F. JOHNSON, wanted at Maidstone. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 10.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— S. A. FISHER, age 50 to 60, rather tall, slight build, hair apparently dyed light brown or ginger; dress, navy blue cos- tume, dark hat, supposed trimmed white feathers. Stated she was a relative of an admiral and at one time was well- known to persons connected with the Court. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. BUCKING HA MS HI RE. 11 — Newport Pagnell ( County).— For rape, at Sherington.— ALBERT WILLIAM HOLTON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 11 ins., com- plexion fresh, long face and small features, hair and moustache iron grey, eyes brown, erect bear- ing; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark grey breeches, old brown leather leggings with buttons, heavy boots with tips and nails. A native of Little Horwood. Has served in the 16th Lancers. Has been employed as groom, farm labourer, and navvy. Absconded 15th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearce, Newport Pagnell. CHESHIRE. 12.— Altrincham ( County).— For embezzling £ 1 3s. 7£ d.— DAVID or DANIEL DODDS, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair sandy, slovenly appearance; dress, dark tweed jacket, light riding breeches, cloth leggings, brown overcoat, green tie, hard felt hat, lace boots. May seek employment as a cabdriver, groom or farm labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Altrincham. DERBYSHIRE. IS.— Chesterfield ( County). For stealing at Wingerworth, 13th inst., a " Fleet" bicycle, 26- in. frame, black enamelled, " Liberty" tyres, dropped handle bars, extension and mud splasher on front mudguard, rat trap pedals, double- chime bell fitted on top bar, brown mackintosh cape fast- ened with strap on back.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion and small mous- tache dark, hair dark brown; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark trousers, grey cap, check necker- chief, red paint spots on jacket. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police, Chesterfield. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Portsmouth ' Borough).— For obtaining credit by fraud.- JA. MES LEWIS FUTCHER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion sallow, slight moustache dark, holds his head on one side; dress, blue suit, light cap or soft green hat. He writes to firms, chiefly in Scotland, re- questing them to forward goods to him with ac- count, and after receipt of the articles he fails to answer letters. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. THE POLICE GAZETTE. f » APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( owtinued)— KENT. 15.— Tonbridgo ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— HARRY HAMIL- TON, supposed an American, age 39, height 5 ft. 5i ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald patch on top covered with false hair) turning grey, eyes blue or grey, 1st and 2nd left fingers ampu- tated at 2nd joint, very small feet, discoloured teeth, stopped with gold; well dressed. Repre- sents himself as a consulting engineer to a com- pany and obtains money on the promise of purchas- ing shares. * Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Neaves, Tonbridge. 16.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing 17th inst., from his lodgings, a lady's half- hoop ring, set 3 turquoise and 2 pearls; 1 do., set 3 and 5 small diamonds; 1 lady's gold dress ring, set 3 brilliants; 1 gold snake- pattern ring; 1 gold and brilliant pendant, containing ivory miniature of baby, fine gold chain attached; 1 rolled- gold pen- dant, containing photographs of 2 gentlemen, gold snake- pattern chain attached; 1 long gold neck- chain, small link pattern; 1 small silver spoon, imitation opal attached; 1 silver English lever watch, cases worn, gold chain, long and short links alternately, attached; 1 gold oval pendant.— RICHARD WILSON, alias MARTIN, Office No. 315- 10 ( see Illustrated Circular 106, Fig. 34, and Case 83, POLICE GAZETTE, 18th October, 1912), age 31, height 5 ft. 8£ ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey; wearing thick dark over- coat, bowler hat, white muffler. Information to the Chief Constable, Folkestone. 17.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For obtaining, 28th ult., £ 2 10s., by worthless cheque, and a fawn- colour single- breasted " Dexter" weatherproof overcoat, tab inside collar with " Dexter, whip and trumpet," lined light check material, 2 horizontal outside Dockets and inside ticket pocket with flaps, tab for front of collar was buttoned inside left breast.— F. JOHNSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., short dark mous- tache; wearing light rainproof overcoat, dark soft hat. Of good address. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 18.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For ' obtaining coal by false pretences, 16th ult.— HILL, age about 45, tall, thin face; dress, peacock blue costume, white lace trimmings on front of skirt, believed blue straw hat, white motor veil, white wrapper with tassels at end, carried a Dorothy bag, and umbrella. She took lodgings, stated she was forming a girls' club for the purpose of dressing dolls for a sale of work in connection with the Dumb Friends' League, obtained entrance fees from girls, and goods from tradesmen on similar representations. LANCASHIRE. 19.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— JOHN NOLAN, Office No. 927- 12, Tabular Form, 6th inst., not now wanted; he has reported. 20.— Blackpool i( Borough).— For embezzle- ment.— JAMES SANDERSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache sandy, eyes blue, slouching gait; dress, dark suit, black overcoat. A carter or laundry vanman. Warrant issued. 21.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For indecent assault on a male child.— JOHN STUBBS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, round face, hair and moustache dark brown; very talkative and invariably seeks the company of boys. A lamplighter. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. 22.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing a pair of gloves ( recovered), 16s. 10d., and 18 postage stamps.— CHARLES BATESON, alias SCHO- FIELD, age about 32, height 5 ft. 10 ins., com- plexion fresh, brown eyes, hair and moustache au- burn ( may now be clean shaven), sharp features; dress, brown suit with stripes, dark mixture over- coat, dark cap. Sleeps in brick kilns and farm buildings, and may be found on golf links. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. 23.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For neglecting his children.— PETER LANGLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., good build, stoops slightly, complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown; dress, brown jacket, cord trousers, cap, scarf, and clogs. A labourer; native of St. Helens. Warrant issued. 2i.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing £ 3 15s. from his lodgings, 4th inst.— ERNEST JONES, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 ins., good build, complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaven; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, brown trousers and cap, light lace boots. A labourer; native ot St. Helens. Is a member of the 5th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. Absconded 7th inst. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 25.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing 3s. from his lodgings,- 17th inst., and obtaining food, lodgings, and Is. by false pretences, 16th and 17th inst.— H. WILSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion sallow, prominent cheek bones, heavy moustache light, eyes blue; dress, blue pilot overcoat, " L. N. W." on collar, dark vest, brown trousers, gun- metal watch, white metal chain. Stated he was an engineer on the L. & N. Wl Railway, and belonged to Swindon. 26.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 17th inst., a pair of lace boots, Derby pattern, size 8.— THOMAS OR HENRY WEBB, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., good build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark serge suit, hard felt hat. A native of Wol- verhampton. Has in his possession a pedlar's certificate, issude in London and expires June, 1913. Visits small shops and public- houses, selling small packets of Lion cement. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 27.— Abergavenny ( County).— For forging a cheque and obtaining £ 150, including 20 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. H. 21— 92381 to 92400, all stamped Capital and Counties Bank, Abergavenny, with indelible ink and dated 25th August, 1911, London.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 ins., hair dark, clean shaven, sunken cheeks; supposed wearing a fawn- colour mackintosh and light cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 28. — Nottingham ( C%).- FREDERICK CLARKE, Office No. 2562- 00, Tabular Form, 29th March, 1912, not now wanted; sentence expired. 29 — Nottingham ( City).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a lady's 18- ct. gold ring, set cluster of 7 dia- monds, claw setting, No. 320 scratched inside.— HERBERT JACKSON, alias JOHNSON, Office No. 1303- 05, age 27, height 5 ft. 6f ins., com- plexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, clean shaven, H tattooed back left forearm, brown mole front right forearm. He called at a jeweller's shop, represented himself to be a doctor at a local hospi- tal, and asked the shop assistant to allow him to look at a ring which was in the window, the request was complied with and he immediately put the ring on his finger and decamped. SO. - Witney ( County).— For fowlstealing.— GEORGE PRATLEY, Office No. 2306- 01, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes blue, scar back of neck, first and second joints left thumb, 2 scars third joint left forefinger, blue scar second ring finger; dress, black jacket, cord trousers, grey cap, strong nail boots, black cloth or silk neckerchief. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Witney. STAFFORDSHIRE. M — Bilston I ( County).— For stealing £ 89.— FANNY GOODWIN, alias GERTRUDE GOOD- WIN, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, thin face, hair dark brown, eyes brown, rather full; dress, black fur hat, dark blue three- quarter jadket, velvet collar and cuffs, fastens with loops of braid, blue stripe skirt, black blouse, lace shoes. Native of Bilston. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pilliner, Bilston. 32.— Tettenhall ( County). — For embezzling 10s. 6d. at Wednesfield, 9th ult.— ARTHUR BEL- LINGHAM, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, light grey coat and vest, brown cord breeches and leg- gings, white rubber or celluloid collar, dark cap. A maltster; native of Netherton, near Dudley. May be found working as a farm labourer. ( See Case 36, 13th inst). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Tettenhall. SURREY. 33.— Dorking ( County).— For leaving his child chargeable to the Dorking Union.— GILBERT KNIGHT, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, usually clean shaven; horses head, horse shoe and wreath right arm of military appearance. A labourer or carter. Ab- sconded 12th September last. Warrant issued. 31.— Dorking ( County).— For obtaining two pairs of boots and £ 2 3s. 6d. by a worthless cheque. — JOHN MARSHALL, alias ARTHUR COOMBES, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, well dressed. Is in possession of a cheque- book, P. 01182 to 0.1205, Mercantile Bank, 42, North Audley Street, W. Is identical with a man wanted for similar frauds at Sevenoaks, Southamp- ton, Portsmouth, Leighton Buzzard and Notting Hill, London. Absconded 7th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Coleman, Dorking. WARWICKSHIRE. 35.— Warwick ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— HARRY ATKIN, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, prominent nose, pointed chin, of good address, lisps slightly; dress, blue serge suit, brown mixture cap, celluloid collar, blue slop under jacket. He calls upon Salvation Army cap- tains and obtains money by representing himself as a member. A boiler maker. Has served in the Army. Apprehended, see Case No. 91. Warrant issued. 36.— W a r W i C k ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— LAWRENCE GEE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, long features, pointed nose, hair brown, heavy moustache sandy, addicted to drink; dress, grey mixture knicker suit, stockings and shoes, blue tie, green woollen scarf, round dark green hat, narrow brim, grey mackintosh. A native of Hayfield, Derbyshire. Stated his father was a farmer and magistrate and that he was engaged to judge the Birmingham Cattle Show. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ravenhall, Warwick. WILTSHIRE. 37.— Swindon ( County).— For obtaining goods and money by a worthless cheque, No. 483807, on the Capital and Counties Bank, Marlborough Branch, for £ 4 5s., drawn by J. Stevens, made payable to and endorsed J. Foster, on 6th inst.— J. " FOSTER, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion dark, full face, heavy mous- tache, of good address and smart appearance; wearing fawn- colour overcoat, light soft grey hat. He called at a shop, used the name of a doctor in the neighbourhood, asked to be supplied with good, for which he ' tendered the above cheque and re- ceived £ 2 8s. change, the chqeue was returned from the Bank marked " No account." YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 38.— Bridlington ( County).— For embezzling £ 17, monies of a friendly society.— TOM LICKES, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, right little finger stiff; dress, dark grey jacket suit with blue and green stripes, drab- colour mackintosh, sailor- knot tie, brown lace boots. Absconded 25th ult. A native of Weaver- thorpe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. East, Bridlington. 39.— Hull ( City).— JOHN POULTON, Office No. 1259/ 08, Tabular Form, 13th inst., not now wanted, he has reported at Smethwick. 40.— Hull ( City).— For stealing a number of plates, knives, forks, tea- pots, trays, spoons, etc., 23rd ult.— J. HAIGH, alias JAMES MOVERLEY, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache and eyes brown; dress, blue serge suit, rather large greenish soft felt hat. A ship's carpenter; native of Thorne, near Doncaster. Has latterly been a refreshment- house proprietor. Previously convicted at Hull and Thorne. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 41— Dews bury ( County).— DOUGLAS FRANK COX, Case No. 51, 28th August, 1908, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. 42.— Leeds ( City).— For stealing £ 11 3s. 6d. from a dwelling house.— Supervisee GEORGE TAYLOR, alias FOWLER, Office No. 434- 01 ( see Case 33, 26th July, 1912), age 33, height 5 ft. 4- J ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey; 2 anchors and " J " back left forearm, cross flags back left hand, bust of female inside, ribbon, bear- ing " Good luck, Eliza," etc., back right forearm, " Eliza" front right forearm; scar left of fore- head. L." thereon; 1 do. do., glass missing, gold face; 1 curb bracelet, 9- ct. gold, has attached gold seal and small gold heart with pearl in centre; 1 gold band bracelet, 9- ct., chased; 2 gold band do., gold cross attached to one; 1 chain bracelet, with gold padlock and locket attached; 1 lady's gold ring, set diamond and 2 sapphires; 1 gold brooch, set pearls; 1 old- fashioned brooch; 1 lady's gold chain, heart, set 3 pearls, attached; 1 do. gold ring, set turquoise and 2 pearls; 1 do. do., set pink corals, 1 small diamond; 1 do., sable fur boa with 2 tails.— By A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes ( small) brown, wearing pince- nez ; dress, dark suit, greyish brown overcoat with belt at back, black hard hat, latest pattern, navy blue striped muffler, soft cream- colour collar, wear- ing gold ring, appearance of a commercial traveller. He called at the hotel, engaged a room for the night, asked to be shown same, then left, stating he would go to the station and bring his luggage, returned shortly afterwards with a new green dressing- case, which he left behind, and on being opened was found to contain potatoes; it has been ascertained that after committing the larceny, he returned to Hull, which place he left 17th inst., accompanied by a woman, age about 22, height 5 ft. 9 ins., slight build, complexion very pale; dress, grey tweed costume, black hat trimmed with silk violets and wearing a sable fur and veil. Had with them two dressing- cases similar to the one left in this borough. No doubt identical with MAN, Case No. 53, 13th inst. States his name is THOMAS PERCY, a marine engineer, of George Street, Sydney, N. S. W., that he was discharged 14 days ago at the East Indian Docks, London, and was making his way to Liverpool. His mind is apparently affected, and by appear- ances it is believed he has escaped from some insti- tution. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Congleton.
