POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 2( 5, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 29 « 3<}. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THS POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is ojfered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of " J police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be, 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all ptisons to be apprehended or of stolen property b-' ir a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen prop< rty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the offici r signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on II'clnesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must lie clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. A native of London. 2.— L Division.— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences, 3rd inst.— HARRY EVANS, alias SYLVANE, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- plexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, left eye missing ( may have artificial one), of Jewish appearance; dress, dark slate colour jacket suit, dark overcoat, green tie, hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Lambeth. May be found playing a harmonium outside public houses. Warrant issued. 3.— L Division.— For obtaining 18 pairs of surgical stockings by false pretences.— WALTER BUGDEN, Office No. 2071- 04, age 53, height 5 ft. 6f ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; scar under chin;( dress, dark suit, light brown overcoat, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 4 — T Division,— For stealing two gelding ponies ( lst, age 12 years, 13i hands, white mark each side of back, long mane and tail, 2nd age 12 years, 13 hands, thick long mane and tail, 3 fire marks inside off fore leg).— WILLIAM SMITH, a gipsy, age 50, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion dark, hair'black, clean shaven, small eyes; wearing dark clothes and cap, grey military overcoat, with strap at back. A horse dealer, native of Hounslow. Lives in a caravan painted green picked out red, man's face with apples around carved in front. Warrant issued. 5.— v Division. - For obtaining by a worthless cheque drawn on the London and South Western Bank, Ltd., Wimbledon Branch, 13th inst., two horses ( lst a brown gelding, 5 years, 16 hands, white star on forehead, 2 small marks inside knees, saddle marked, 2nd a bay gelding, 6 years, 16 hands 2 ins., black points, both have long manes and tails.— A. ROBERTS ( probably false), age 40, height 5 ft. 11 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaven, North Country accent ; dress, blue serge suit, green rough mix- ture overcoat, dark tie, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division-— For obtaining £ 5 by a worthless cheque on the Permanent Hearts of Oak Building Society, 49, Oxford Street.— FLORRIE CLARKE, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion very pale, hair dark, eyes brown, wears glasses, plausible; dress, dark grey costume, black fur toque hat. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Reading ( Borough)— For obtaining 7s. by false pretences.— WILLIAM MANTTAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion ruddy, eyes ( weak) light blue; dress, light Norfolk suit ( without belt), light cap, blue striped muffler, fast- ened with safety pin. He was employed as a can- vasser by a mineral water firm, and obtained com- mission by means of bogus orders. A native of Warwick. Has served in the Warwickshire Regi- ment. May be found staying at second- class lodging houses or low beer houses. Absconded lst inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 8.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining one shilling by false pretences, 10th inst.— WIL- LIAM HOLDSWORTH, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 4 ins., hair believed dark, clean shaven, dissipated appearance, apparently a heavy drinker; wearing dark overcoat, torn at pockets, black bowler hat, shabby appearance. He calls on per- sons who have registered keys with the " Scottish National Key Registry Association, Ltd., Edin- burgh," and represents he is an agent, and author- ised to collect renewal fees for same. Until about three years ago he was in the employ of the Asso- ciation. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 9.— Newport Pagnell ( County)— For obtaining £ 3 10s- Od. by a fictitious cheque drawn on the London City and Midland Bank, Hockley Hill, Birmingham, 27tli ult., at Stony Stratford.— EBENEZER WILLSON, age about 28, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., hair ( wavy) dark, of smart appearance; dress, blue jacket and vest, brown riding breeches, leggings and boots, or grey over- coat and cap, blue trousers, black boots. A grocer, late of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearce, Newport- Pagnell. DORSETSHIRE. id— Poole ( County).— For stealing £ 14 from her lodgings at Bourne Valley, between 14th and 18th inst.— — SHUTTLE, age about 48, medium height, rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair grey; dress, black skirt trimmed black braid, black sateen blouse, long black jacket, round black toque trimmed black beads, black veil, white woollen gloves, shoes, may be wearing a black or white silk scarf, sometimes wears light spats. Usually stays in private lodgings and endeavours to obtain a situation as housekeeper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. 1L— Detective Department. — For obtaining £ 5 by fraud, 16th ult.— CAPTAIN LEE RUSSELL, age about 60, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, clean shaven, deep wrin- kles in face, scar leftside of neck, American accent; dress, blue suit, black bowler hat. He arrived in Liverpool from New York on 7th January last, and here on 8th March, represented himself as advance agent for Barnum and Bailey's Exhibi- tion Co., Ltd., and arranged for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to visit Dublin on 12th April, secured extensive grounds for same, negotiated contracts for supplies, and invariably obtained loans. Ab- sconded 29th ult., and is said to have visited Lon- don, Manchester, Plymouth, and elsewhere. Is believed to have been convicted of fraud in America. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DURHAM. 12.— West Hartlepool ( County).— For obtaining £ 16, by false pretences, 24th February last.— GEORGE PYMAN ENGLISH, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache brown, may be clean shaven, eyes grey, cut scar left cheek; dress, navy blue suit, fawn colour mackintosh, dark tie with white spots, light tweed cap, lace boots. Late a ship owner, native of West Hartlepool. Is accompanied by a woman, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., hair auburn, eyes hazel, advanced in pregnancy; dress, black costume, black fur hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Warrant issued. 17.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a quantity of rope.— GEORGE QUICK, alias WILLIAMS and SULLIVAN, Office No. S. 52661, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, two warts left cheek, scar left forearm, fleshy mole centre back of neck; has been con- victed at Barry and Swansea.— W. C. EVANS, alias HICKS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; wear- ing dark clothes, muffler, large peak cap. May be found in vicinity of Docks or Shipping Offices Warrant issued. 18.— Cardiff ( City)— For stealing ( bailee), furniture and wearing apparel.— WILLIAM EASTMAN, alias BEWS and PHILLIPS, Office No. 1228- 11, age 27, height 5 ft. 6£ ins., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes brown, right index finger amputated at first joint; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat.— MABEL O'DELL, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., com plexion fresh, full face, hair light ( dyed); dress, Black velvet dress, white three- quarter length jacket with blue silk collar and cuffs, black hat A native of Bristol. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 19.— Cheltenham ( County).— For obtaining money by worthless cheques.— CYRlL IVERSON, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 8 ins., very stout build, round flabby face, hair grey, clean shaven, some- times wears pince- nez with gold colour rims; dress, dark grey suit, fawn colour Raplan overcoat, cap or grey soft felt hat.— CYRIL IVERSON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, consumptive appearance, husky voice, weak chest, stoops, well educated; dress, navy blue suit, green knitted vest, rough grey tweed overcoat, green or slate colour soft hat. In payment of goods ordered they tendered cheques on the London County and Westminster Bank, Islington Branch, and the National Provin- cial Bank of England, Teignmouth Branch, for more than the amounts, and received the balance. Represented themselves as uncle and nephew. The first described is identical with T. Canning Duck- worth, alias B. West, Case No. 17, 22nd ult. They were visited by A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., good build, moustache dark, rather scowling look, who is now wanted at Weston- Super- Mare for cheque frauds in name of E. Cotton. Warrants issued. 20.— Cheltenham ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings and money by false pretences.— MAUD COOLE, alias JONES, PR1TCHARD and CARTER, age about 36, height 5 ft. 9 ins., hair ( turning grey) light brown, eyes dark, 3 scars right side of neck, bad front teeth, 3 or 4 left upper teeth missing; dress, long navy blue coat, navy blue skirt, flannelette blouse, purple green and white stripes; heliotrope toque with roses to match, black veil, Oxford shoes, old brown kid gloves. Was accompanied by a boy, age 4 years, complexion fair, heavy appearance about eyes; dress, green jersey, trousers and cap, grey or brown overcoat, white silk neckerchief, brown socks and boots. Stated she was a native of Dean Forest, and came here for the purpose of consulting a solicitor with respect to property left her by a relative; also stated that her home was in Cardiff. Is well- known at Swindon, and was convicted of false pretences at Dorchester in 1911. Absconded 6th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 21 — Bristol ( City). - For stealing £ 4 4s., 8th inst.— WALTER KINGSTON CALLER, age about 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, cut scar on temple near right eye, slightly deaf right side; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, cap, lace boots. He belongs to the Army Reserve. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 22 — Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., at Farnborough, 3 plain gold studs; 1 pair mother- o'- pearl cuff links; 1 brown portman- teau, H ft. by 2i ft., and £ 3.— JAMES FERGU- SON, age 24, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scars right leg and left buttock; dress, navy blue suit, dark overcoat, bowler hat, had with him a new grey tweed mix- ture suit, and a walking stick. A native of Ayr- shire. Is an absentee frijm the 2nd Soots Guards. Information to Supt. Davis, Aldershot. 23.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 5 13s., 19th inst.— A WOMAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, eyes grey, walks badly; dress, black jacket and skirt, black hat trimmed ribbon. She has been in a home during the past 12 months, and a situa- tion was obtained for her, where she remained a few days and absconded. 24.— Alton ( County)— For embezzlement, 15th February and 27th ult., at Borden.— ALICK TIMMS, age about 25, height about 5/ ft. 4 ins., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, may be clean shaven; of Jewish appearance; dress, blue serge suit, light cap. A clothier's assistant. May endeavour to obtain a situation by a testi- monial signed by E. Evans & Co., tailors and out- fitters, Woolwich Road, S. E. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 25 — Fareham ( County).- WALTER BRAD- LEY, Case No. 20, 21st April, 1905. Particu- lars cancelled. KENT. 26.— Chatham ( County).— For obtaining £ 4 by a forged money order, gave name of GEORGE HADDON, alias CLARKE- KING, etc., Office No. 2781- 01 ( see Illustrated Circular 77, figure 12), and for photograph and description see Case 33, 5th inst., also cases 4 and 18, 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rhodes, Chatham. 27.— AT aid Si one ( Borough).— For an offence under the Bankruptcy Laws.— WILLIAM THOMAS REYNOLDS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., clean shaven, wears pince- nez, some- times wears brown leggings. An architect and surveyor. Was accompanied by a woman and girl when he absconded 25th January last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. LANARKSHIRE. 28.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing jewellery and obtaining money by bogus cheques between lst and 3rd inst.— WILLIAM BAKER, alias MORLEY BRENNAN, WILLIAMS, BUR- NARD, BENSON, and BAILEY, Office No. 7- 07 ( see Case 37, 19th inst.), age 41, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes blue ( left eye artificial), wears glasses and is always well dressed. May start business as a money lender, auctioneer, or bookmaker. Warrant issued. 29.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing jewellery, and obtaining money by bogus cheques between lst and 3rd inst.— WILLIAM BAKER, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft 9 ins., complexion pale, hair and small moustache dark brown, may be clean shaven, right eye artificial, wears glasses, well dressed. A native of London. He traded as Baker, Baker, General Dealers, St. George's Road, and advertised extensively. At one time he carried on a similar business in Caledonian Road, London, N. Absconded 3rd inst., accompanied by his son, age 19. May endeavour to leave the country. May have in his possession a considerable quan- tity of jewellery and a large sum of money. Is identical with J. W. Benson, Case 22, 27th January last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. UO.— Reedley ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences.— WILLIAM BERRY, dm GRIMSHAW, CHAD WICK, POLLARD, etc., Office No. 1462- 00, age 71, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes hazel; large mole right of forehead, 3 fleshy moles right cheek, stam- mers when speaking, leans forward when walking; dress, blue serge suit. Warrant issued. 31.— Reedley ( County\— For embezzlement WILLIAM CLARE, age 47, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes ( cast in left) brown, swinging gait; dress, blue suit, three- quarter length overcoat, hard hat. A clothier's canvasser, native of Cocker- mouth. While at Colne he was a member of the Salvation Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pinnock, Reedley, near Burnley. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing ( by trick) £ 19 5s 5d., 5th inst.— A MAN, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion and eyes dark, hair and moustache black, appearance of an Italian or Portuguese, speaks broken Eng- lish ; wearing grey mixture rainproof overcoat, bowler hat. He obtained the money in exchange for dollar notes, purporting to have been issued by the State Bank at New Brunswick, New Jer- sey ; the notes are said to be worthless; also passed as current coin, Russian coin which has been called in. May be found at Seaports. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 33 - Manchester ( City) — For stealing, between 16th and 18th inst., a lady's long gold neck chain; 4 gold bangles, different designs; 1 lady's cross over ring with large diamond in centre, surrounded with several small diamonds; 1 square gold loop set 5 diamonds, foreign make.— MARY or SARAH TURNER, age 45 to 50, slight build, very tall, complexion sallow, red mark right side of face; dress, black blouse and skirt, red shawl. A native of Salford. Warrant issued. 34.— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining by false pretences, 10th inst., a banker's cheque for £ 80.— AYANA RE'DDY, age 18, height 5 ft., slight build, clean shaven, thick lips, face pock- pitted ; a man of colour; native of the East Indies, speaks fairly good English; dress, dark striped shoddy suit, bowler hat, and a brown mackintosh, torn. Is known to have consigned by the S. S. " Montgomeryshire," to Calcutta, a quantity of goods which, it is believed, have also been falsely obtained, and it is expected that he will follow at an early date. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1912. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 35.— X Division.— For stealing a sack of fodder from a van.
