POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2946. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TOE EDITOR OJ THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6, Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by. counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. . WEST, age about 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., stout build, very full face, hair ( bald) grey, clean shaven; dress, grey suit, grey woollen vest, black bowler hat. Was accompanied by TWO MEN ( not wanted) lst, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 ins., long features, hair brown, slightly stubby mous- tache dark; wearing dark clothes, silk or bowler hat— 2nd, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., full red face, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark; dress, grey suit. They advertised in the Church Times for a furnished house, obtained one at Highcliffe, near C'hristchurch, taking possession on 27th ult., afterwards visited various tradesmen here and adjoining towns, obtained a large quantity of goods on approval and absconded 2nd inst., for Waterloo; also accompanied by TWO WOMEN. An upholsterer. Accompanied by A WOMAN ( supposed his wife) not wanted, age about 38, tall, thin, and dark ( pregnant); dress, blue coat and skirt, large black hat, trimmed with black feather and ribbon. Absconded 7th inst., taking with them a tin trunk and brown portmanteau. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 1 P ortsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 1, 16th inst.— WILLIAM ROGERS, alias HARRIS, age 35, height 5 ft. 1\ ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, dark moustache, may be clean shaven, eyes blue; wearing dark suit, cap, pair of lady's boots- Was entrusted with a sovereign to redeem some articles from a pawnshop and absconded. Has a number of convictions for larceny recorded against him in this borough; also at Glamorgan County Assizes 3rd April, 1906. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HER TFOROSHIRE. 20.— St. Albans ( City).— For obtaining charitable contributions by fraud.— WILLIAM FIELD, alias ANDERSON, SLYFIELD, ETC., Office No. 219- 00, age 50, height 5 ft. 8£ ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown ( turn- ing grey), stout build, tattooed 2 dots middle and 1 ring finger left hand; dress, navy blue suit, dark grey overcoat, grey mixture cap, black lace boots, green tie; addicted to drink. Calls upon persons with a list and states that he is collecting sub- scriptions in aid of a local man who has lost his wife and child under distressing circumstances Has been convicted in London, Wells, Maidstone, Aylesbury, Poole, Maidenhead, etc. Photograph on application. INVERNESS- SHIRE. 21.— Inverness ( Burgh).— For obtaining a khaki rainproof overcoat, " Kelly Bros., Inverness," on tab, by a worthless cheque on the Commercial Bank of Scotland, Bothwell Street Branch, Glas- gow, also for false pretences, 9th inst.— JAMES DOUGLAS GRAY, alias JAMES MacCULLUM MOORE, age 20 to 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion florid, round face, hair ( wavy) light, clean shaven, front upper teeth prominent; dress, grey tweed jacket and vest, light bluish grey breeches, dark green hose, light muffler, shoes, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. A motor mechanic or chauffeur; native of Paisley. May seek employ- ment at garages. Previously convicted at Greenock, Dunoon, Glasgow and London. See Case' No. 34, current issue. Warrant issued. ISLE OF WIGHT. 22.— Newport ( County).— For embezzling £ 260 9s. 6d., monies of the Isle of Wight Rural District Council.— HENRY NEWIAND, age 53, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, oval face, hair grey, moustache ( long straggling) light brown, tinged with red. Nearly all are stamped " G. Hudson"; 1 white carpenter's apron with large pocket.— A MAN, age 40 to 43, height 5 ft. II ins., to 6 ft., complexion fresh, moustache ( heavy and drooping) ginger; dress, light tweed suit, dark skull cap, and the stolen apron rolled up. Information to Supt. Heard, Canterbury. 24.— Slttlngbourne ( County).— Vox stealing ( bailee), a cheque for £ 57 14s. 10d., and fraudently converting same to his own use.— WILLIAM HENRY McCUDDEN, age 48, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion ruddy, hair ( nearly bald) and eyes grey; dress, blue- grey suit, heavy greenish over- coat, strapped cuffs, strap at back. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 26.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining food by false pretences between 13th and 16th inst. EVANS, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, hair brown, slight mous- tache or clean shaven, pointed face, prominent cheeks, sore or birthmark under lip centre of chin, protruding ears; dress, dark suit, soft collar with lavender stripes, long dark overcoat, striped pat- tern, belt at back, gauntlet cuffs, dark tweed cap, fawn- colour motor wrapper, fringed at ends. Stated he was a motor man in the employ of a firm of soap makers; is believed to have formerly travelled the country with a motor van for the firm. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 27 — Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining, 16th ult., by a forged money order, a " Bat" motor cycle, maker's No. 10745, Jap ^ ngine, 1911 model, 6 horse power, two- speed " Phelon and Moore" gear, Dunlop tyres, free engine, starting handle, long belt driver.— GEORGE BROWN ( supposed false) age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., slight build, hair and slight moustache light brown. He answered an advertisement and agreed to pur- chase the cycle for £ 60, the machine was despatched to him at Euston railway station. It was afterwards discovered that the money order had been fraudulently altered from £ 6 to £ 60. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 2&.— Sleaford ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., a bicycle ( recovered); 1 Silver King oil lamp; 1 pair lace boots, size 7, nailed.— A MAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes dark brown, of smart appearance, bird, true love, cap and whip right forearm, sword and heart left forearm; dress, dark blue suit, nearly new, black leather leggings, with straps, dark cap; supposed wearing the stolen boots; had with him a soldier's blue overcoat. During the past 5 months he has been employed as a groom and cowman. Absconded 4th inst., riding new " Campion " bicycle. Information to Supt. Reed, Sleaford. MONTGOMER YSHIRE. 29.— Newtown ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— WILLIAM DAVIES, age 70, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair grey, left hand amputated at wrist and has an iron hook. Stated that he travelled for a Chester firm of booksellers and printers. Last heard of at Car- marthen on 12th January last. Supposed native of Rutlien, Denbighshire. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Newtown. NORFOLK. 30.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences ( worthless cheque)— CLIFFORD ERNEST GARRETT, age 43 ( looks 50), height 5 ft. 5J ins., rather thick set, complexion sallow, hair very dark, tinged with grey, moustache ( believed heavy) dark, turning grey, eyes brown, Jewish appearance, abscess scar back of neck, cut scar 3rd finger left hand; wearing soft round black felt clerical hat, light jacket and dark overcoat. A native of Great Yarmouth. Formerly a school teacher at Colton, Norfolk, but lately carried on business in this City as an Estate Agent, under the style of " Messrs. C. E. Garrett & Co., Ltd." Absconded, 25th ult., booking from here by the 10.25 p. m. train for Liverpool Street, ticket No. 9995, 3rd single. He is probably in possession' of cheque books on local branches of the following banks:— London City and Midland, Capital and Counties, National Provincial and Barclay's. He interviews the manager of a Bank, informs him he is expecting to receive a deposit note for a large amount, with which he will open an account; then requests that he be supplied with a cheque book, which he invariably receives, but the account is never opened. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Norwich. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 31.— Oundle ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences on 6th and 7th ult.— E. CLARKE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, large moustache reddish brown, of good address; dress, dark over- coat, fancy vest, brown leather leggings. He called upon tradesmen, stated he represented an advertising contractor at Bourneville, Porthcawl, and solicited orders for insertion of advertisements on iuside covers of magazines, which were to be placed in clubs, etc. Warrant issued. Tebbey, Oundle. 32.— Towcester ( County).— For stealing 7 fowls, 2nd inst— EDWARD BULL, alias COCKER, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes dark, figures of women both arms; dress, dark jacket and vest, large pockets in jacket, Cardigan jacket, dark brown cord trousers, dark blue muffler tied at side, cloth slouch hat, heavy boots.— JOSEPH AGER, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light brown, eyes grey, nose deformed and has been broken; dress, brown square- cut jacket, large inside pockets, brown cord vest and trousers, black muffler, heavy boots; both navvies, and natives of Brackley. Left 3rd inst., accompanied by another man ( short) wears earrings; dress, black jacket and vest, white cord trousers. Warrant issued.
