POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2942. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THB POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offend, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Q. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him., the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or hit immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12 All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. . . 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT l — Convict Supervision Office.— For being a convict at large after revocation of licence— HENRY WESTON, alias MATTHEWS, ISRAEL, NORRIS and ABBOTT, Office No. 1090- 02, age 51, height 5 ft. 5£ ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( short stubby moustache), eyes dark grey; scar left eyebrow; bracelet tattooed right and left wrists; when last heard of was dressed in rough mechanic style and wore a plaid scarf; was accompanied by a boy, age about 13, respectably dressed, wearing Eton collar, whom he described as his son. He may also be accompanied by a woman, age about 30, tall, fair, several front teeth missing, respectably dressed, and a girl named Mabel, age 4 years. A native of Newcastle- on- Tyne. May endeavour to engage as a ship's steward. Warrant issued. 4.— V Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— HANS GEYER BARON VON KOLB, an Austrian, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fair, hair light; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat, lace boots. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 5.— X Division.— For stealing, 23rd ult.. 3 £ 5 notes, Nos. 58886- 8 and 9, and a quantity of jewellery ( part recovered) — FREDERICK LESLIE FREEMAN, age 19|, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) light, eyes bluish grey, brown mole between shoulder blades and back of each knee, stammers slightly; dress, brown striped suit, grey overcoat and cap. A native of Ealing. Warrant issued. 6— Y Division.— For embezzling £ 9 14s. 6d.— FREDERICK LAKE, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 ins., slight build, complexion and hair dark clean shaven, thin face; dress, dark jacket suit grey overcoat, and cap. CHESHIRE. l.— Altrincham { County).— For stealing, 20th ult., a small gas cooker and tube; 2 plates, gold and blue; 2 do. green and gold; 6 white handled table knives; 6 do. forks; 1 bolster cover; 1 picture of a woman in Oxford frame; 4 post card pictures, wooden frames; 2 brass candlesticks, ivy leaf and frog thereon; 1 black melton overcoat, vertical pockets, three quarter length— MAUD WRIGHT, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion ruddy, hair and eyes brown; dress, mauvre colour skirt or black and white check skirt, rough blue jacket, half- length, plaid coat, three- quarter length, lace boots. A native of Broadheath, Althrincham — WILLIAM JENKINS, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, hair ( very long) dark brown, clean shaven, eyes weak, narrow face, wears glasses with strong steel frame; dress, blue serge jacket, dark brown vest, black and wEte plaid breeches, leggings. Supposed a native of Birmingham. Has travelled with a van for the Stello Metal Polish Company, Liverpool; also sells scented saw dust in envelopes as perfumed floral sachet. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Altrincham. DERBYSHIRE. 8.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For ob- taining credit by fraud between 20th and 25th ult. J. ROBSON, alias ROBINSON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., hair light brown, clean shaven; dress, dark jacket suit, dark overcoat, cap. He called upon tradesmen, stated he was organising a benefit concert in aid of a man unable to work through injury. Canvassed for trade advertise- ments to be shewn on the programme, then ordered a number of programmes and tickets to be printed, which he sold, and decamped, 28th ult., a few hours before the concert was announced to commence. May be accompanied by a woman ( not wanted) and a child age 4 months. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Chesterfield. DORSETSHIRE. 9.— Poole ( County).— For embezzlement— — JOHN CARTER, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache dark. Has been employed as a Scotch draper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. ESSEX. 10.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing 10s., 11th December, 1911, and attempted larceny, 28th December, 1911, respectively— ROGERS, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, thin face, front upper teeth artificial and badly fitted; wearing long brown mixture coat, tight^ fitting brown worsted muffler, brown knitted cap, fits closely over ears, dark woollen gloves, lace boots— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 ins., hair and moustache dark, may be clean shaven, splay feet; wearing brown coat with astrachan collar. They lived together in furnished rooms, called upon domestic servants, solicited orders for photographic enlargements, returned a few days later with proofs, then asked for orders for frames, for which they obtained deposits, but failed to deliver. Believed wanted elsewhere. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Colchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 11.— Cardiff ( City).— For living ( in part) on the earnings of prostitution— FREDERICK LAM- BERT, alias RAYMOND, REYNOLDS, and KING, Office No. S 14013, age 27, height 5 ft. 6J ins., hair ( curly) and moustache black, eyes brown ; clasped hands and flag outside left forearm, clasped hands, crossed flags, " Friendship," eagle, and American flags outside right forearm, " True Love," ' A. L. E." inside right forearm, lump on upper lip. A coloured man, native of Barbadoes. Is a notorious ship thief, and has been convicted in East London, Dover an3 Barry. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE. 12.— Hereford ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Abbey Dore Union— HENRY BENNETT, age 25, height 5 ft 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, hair light brown, mous- tache ginger, eyes blue. A farm labourer, native of Breinton, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thomas, County Police, Hereford. 18.— Leominster ( County).— For stealing a spade and absconding from bail— GEORGE PRICE, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion sallow, hair light, eyes grey, clean shaven, slight impediment in speech; dress, navy blue suit, brown or grey cap, may be wearing a muffler, light lace boots. A tennis bat stringer, native of Hoddesdon. Has been previously con- victed of larceny. Warrant issued. 15.— Ware ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Ware Union— HARRY SEARING, age 38, height 5 ft. 7^ ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, Britannia and Union Jack right forearm, scar right fore- finger; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, cap. A labourer, native of Little Munden, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reed, Ware. 16.— St. Albans ( City).— For stealing from a Riding School, 26th ult., a chauffeur's overcoat, blue, double breasted, green lining, strap and 2 buttons across back, storm cuffs, lined chamois leather, pockets lined same material, left outside pocket has been repaired, plain black buttons, " Gamage & Co., High Holborn" on tab, fit a man height about 5 ft. 6 ins.— CHARLES WILLIAM CRICHTON, age about 30, height 5ft. 9 or 10 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair ( curly) brown, slight moustache, light, cast in one eye, of military appearance; dress, blue jacket suit, cap, and the stolen coat. Has served in the Royal Field Artil- lery, calls upon officers of the Territorials and Police, produces an exemplary certificate of dis- charge from the Regiment, and asks assistance to obtain employment, etc. Warrant issued. KENT. 17.— Cranbrook ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 10s. 0d., by a worthless cheque on Chartered Bank, India and Australia and China, 32 Bishops- gate Street Within, E. C.— THOMAS FIELDEN, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( small) dark, cheeks flushed, of smart appearance; dress, dark blue overcoat, blue serge jacket and vest, grey trousers, bowler hat. Late of Finchley, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Barro wmin - Furness ( Borough1.— For horsestealing, 28th ult.— DANIEL BROPHY, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, flags, faith, hope, and charity right forearm, ship, lighthouse, woman's head and anchor left forearm; dress, dark brown jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, grey cap, red muffler, clogs. A native of Rochdale. Generally employed with striking machines, ball throwing, etc., at Fairs or Market Places. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. 19.— Preston ( Borough).— For obtaining an overcoat and 15s., by false pretences, 3rd ult.— SAMUEL ARTHUR TODD, a man of colour, age 37 or 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., wearing dark green overcoat, cap with band, brown boots. He called at a tailors, purchased an overcoat, and in payment tendered a cheque for £ 2, on the London City and Midland Bank, Ltd., Preston Bank Branch, Blackpool, and received the balance, the cheque was returned marked pavment stopped by order of drawer. Is accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 ins.; wearing black costume and hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Preston. 20.— Warrington ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences, between 22nd and 24th ult.— IOHN BURROWS ( supposed false), age 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven, thick bottom lip, protrudes, eyes grey or blue; dress, brown striped overcoat, belt at back, light grey lounge suit, brown cap, blue tie, wore pin made of the centre of a farthing, and a gold signet ring with initials " J. B." thereon. He engaged lodgings, stated he was employed on the railway erecting automatic fog signals, and would be in Warrington for nine weeks. Warrant issued. NORFOLK. 21.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences ( worthless cheaue)— CLIFFORD ERNEST GARRETT, age 43 ( looks 50), height 5 ft. 5\ ins., rather thick set, complexion sallow, hair very dark, tinged with grey, moustache ( believed heavy) dark, turning grey, eyes brown, Jewish appearance, abscess scar back of neck, cut scar 3rd finger left hand; wearing soft round black felt clerical hat, light jacket and dark overcoat. A native of Great Yarmouth. Formerly a school teacher at Colton, Norfolk, but lately carried on business in this City as an Estate Agent, under the style of " Messrs. C. E. Garrett & Co., Ltd." Absconded, 25th ult., booking from here by the 10.25 p. m. train for Liverpool Street, ticket No. 9995, 3rd single. He is probably in possession of cheque books on local branches of the following banks:— London City and Midland, Capital and Counties, National Provincial and Barclay's. He interviews the manager of a Bank, informs him he is expecting to receive a deposit note for a large amount, with which he will open an account; then requests that he be supplied with a cheque book, which he invariably receives, but the account is never opened. STAFFORDSHIRE. 22.— Burton- on- Trent ( County).— For failing to notify change of residence— JAMES WOODINGS, alias BROWN, Office No. 958- 06, age 38, height 5 ft. 7| ins., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes grey; boil scar back of right hand, blue mark back right ring finger, scar inside left middle finger. Sentenced Stafford Assizes, 4th December, 1906, to 4 and 4 years' penal servitude ( concurrent) for housebreak- ing. Sentence expires 3rd June. 1912, e. g. 68. Information to Supt. Moss, Burton- on- Trent. 23. Newcastle ( County).— JAMES LOYATT, case 34, 23rd ult., has been identified as James Lovatt, Office No. 107- 04. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biddulnh, Newcastle. 24 — Wolverhampton ( liorough). - For obtaining silk, etc., by false pretences, 24th ult., a woman, age about 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, full eyes, of good address; dress, navy blue costume, black hat. She called at a draper's establishment, produced a letter purporting to be from a well- known gentle- man in the county, stating there was a death in the family, and that he wished the firm to undertake the funeral arrangements and supply the mourning. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Wolver- hampton. SURREY. 25.— o o r k i n g ( County).— WILLIAM FENNER, Case No. 54, 21st June, 1907. Warrant withdrawn. 26.— Guildford ( Borough). For obtaining £ 2 15s. 8£ d., by a worthless cheque. No. D 230936, drawn on the Capital and Counties Bank, Ltd., Commercial Road Branch, Portsmouth, by J. ' Hatcher made payable to Mr. J. Smith, for £ 3 TOs. 0d., which was returned marked " no account," 23rd ult.— J. SMITH, alias J. W. WILSONE, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, com- plexion and heavy moustache dark, of smart appearance; dress, blue serge suit, dark overcoat, grey cap, brown boots. A builder, he was issued with a cheque book containing the cheque in ques- tion, but the account was overdrawn in July last. Several cheques from the same book have since been cashed by Smith or Wilsone, signed various names, and it is probable he may open an account at another bank and cash cheques in a similar way. Was accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., rather stout build, complexion fair; dress, navy blue costume, long coat, small black velvet hat, trimmed white wing, of smart appearance. Had with them a small rush dress basket. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Guildford. 27.— R e i g a t e ( Borough).— For larceny— EDWIN BATES, case 48, 23rd ult., has been identified as Edwin Bates, Office No. S. 93993, age height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue; scar top of nose. 28 .— Reigate ( Borough).— For forgery— GEORGE THOMAS SWAIN, a Scotchman, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaven, a heavy 3moker, bad teeth, retiring disposition. Was employed as Local Taxation Officer by the Surrey County Council, and served in South Africa in the Army or Police. Absconded lst inst. Warrant issued. 29 — Reigate ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, between 24th ult. and 2nd inst., a sheet; 1 tablecloth; 1 quilt; 1 black overcoat, velvet collar; 1 dark grey mixture overcoat, vertical pockets; 1 black jacket; 1 black and white plaid vest, with red lining; 1 pair lace boots, size 8; 1 silver watch, plain dial, key winding, ship engraved on back; 1 silver albert, Amalgamated Society of Engineers medal attached; 1 gold pin, horseshoe pattern; 1 gold dress ring, red stone set in centre with blue stone round; 1 B flat cornet, by Boosey, bell slightly dented, in black leather case, Nos. 7560, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, " Redhill Town . Baud" scratched on bell— WILLIAM CRITTENDEN, alias W. HATKINS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., good buiTd, complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, scar back of head; dress, dark coat and vest, greenish tweed trousers, green tie, white wrapper, light grey mixture cap, lace boots. A good cornet player. Stated he was an engineer, and that he had served in the 9th Lancers, the Navy, and mercantile marine service. Is a deserter from the 2nd Royal Sussex Regiment since 14th January 1912. Information to the Head Constable, Reigate. SUSSEX ( East). 30.— H a i I s h a rn ( County).— AMELIA ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, case No. 33, 15th September, 1911. Not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. WESTMORLAND. Appleby ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences, 30th December, 1911— JOHN BRIGGS, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, rather long face, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes hazel. A railway porter, native of Penrith. Has served in the Royal Field Artillery and West- moreland and Cumberland Yeomanry. He inserted an advertisement in the Mid- Cumberland Herald 23rd December, 1911, for farm labourers for Canada, offering free passage, 12 months' work guaranteed, and obtained deposits of £ 1 from applicants. May be accompanied by a man ( not wanted), age 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaven, eyes grey. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dickinson, Appleby. ' YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 32— Hull ( City).— For stealing between £ 4 and £ 5— NELLIE CREE, alias DENNAN, age 17 ( looEs younger), height 4 ft. 2 ins., complexion fresh, round face. A domestic servant, seeks employment through Registry Offices. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). 33.— Thornaby- on- Tees ( County).— For deserting his child— PETER McCANN, age 55, height 5ft. 8 ins., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel, several blue scars on forehead and bridge of nose. A holder up in shipyard. Native of Cote hill, Cavan. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cook, Thornaby- on- Tees. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 34.— Bradford ( City).— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences— JOHN HARVEY, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 ins. ( stout build), complexion fresh, hair ginger, eyes light, clean shaven; dress, dark suit, green overcoat, hard felt hat. Advertises in newspapers for a partner to invest £ 20 in an established cash business. He arrived in this city lTStli ult., and left 24th ult., with a woman, supposed to be his wife. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bradford. 85.— York ( City).— For obtaining by false pretences, a lady's 18 ct. gold half- hoop ring, set five diamonds; 1 do. medium- size, set three diamonds and one large sapphire; 1 single- stone diamond claw- setting safety pin— ARTHUR GIB- SON, of Moat Farm, Oliver, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, age about 37, height 5 ft. 10 ins., com- plexion ruddy, hair dark brown, long face, high cheek bones, clean shaven, very bad front teeth, deliberate Canadian accent; dress, navy blue serge jacket suit, Quaker- grey knitted silk tie, wears silk scarf showing slightly above vest, black- glazed lace boots, green socks, black, broad flat- brimmed bowler hat, long, brown, woollen gauntlet gloves, light brown Zambrene overcoat, carries a yellow hooked cane, with silver tip. He called at the Young Men's Christian Association, saw one of the Committee, entered into his confidence, and was baptised into the Baptist Church, proposed marriage to the sister of the committee- man, and having gained such confidence, went to several trademen and obtained goods, giving the com- mittee- man's name as a reference, and stating that he was about to marry his sister. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 36.— A Division.— For obtaining, 23rd December, 1911, £ 1 by a forged and altered Post Office Savings Bank deposit book— HENRY EDWARD CLARKE- KING, alias DENNISON, tache ( pointed at ends), and eyes brown; wearing frock coat, silk hat, collar and tie; gentlemanly appearance; carries an umbrella and small brown handbag.
