POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2940. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8a. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 64. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6, Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on \ V ednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, cither at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only acceptcd on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should b » prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BEDFORDSHIRE. 1.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 27th ult., a lady's gold engage- ment ring, set 5 diamonds ( broken); 1 do. silver buckle ring, old fashioned; 1 silver horseshoe pat- tern pin; 1 do. floral design with gold centre; 1 do. plain; 1 lady's silver hunter watch and chain— WILSON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 ins., hair light, clean shaven, tattoo marks both wrists; dress, brown jacket, fancy brown vest, with red and white spots, grey trousers and cap, soft collar fastened with safety pin, heliotrope tie, shoes. Represented that he was agent for a cinematograph proprietor. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. DEVONSHIRE. 2.— Exeter ( City).— Wanted on commitment warrant, sentenced to 4 months' hard labour for neglect of his child, 21st November last— JOHN CHARLES HENRY BILLINGER, age about 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., rather thick set, complexion fresh, hair, dark brown inclined to curly, clean shaven, eyes grey. Dancing girl, sailor, girl, ship in full sail, " Love to Bertie," right forearm, clasped hands, ship, girl in tights, Britannia left forearm; dress, dark suit and cap. A labourer, native of Exeter. He was at Bath about a fort night ago, and may be making his way to Wales to obtain work in the mines, previously worked in clay- pits in Cornwall. Has served in the Navy as officer's servant. Is very fond of football and may be found playing with some team. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. ESSEX. 3.— Chelmsford ( County).— For deserting his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Chelms- ford Poor Law Union— FRANK WRIGHTON, age 41, height 5ft. 6 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, moustache light brown, eyes grey; dress, long dark grey overcoat, dark grey trousers and vest, green tie. A clerk, native of London. Absconded 11th January, 1911. May be found outside theatres opening carnage doors. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 4.— Grays ( County).— For absconding with Workhouse clothing, 22nd ult.— EDWARD HIG- GINS, age 44, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache ginger, eyes brown, scar right side of neck, woman right fore- arm; dress, dark tweed coat and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap, blue striped shirt, guernsey, blue stockings, all marked " 25, Orsett Union, Essex," heavy lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Grays. 5.— R O C h fo r d ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 3 rugs and a cliair— THOMAS COOMBES, age about 24, height 5 ft. 10 ins., very slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( thin on top) light brown, long thin features; dress, grey Norfolk jacket suit and cap. An upholsterer. He obtained the goods on the pretence that he had a customer for them. Is believed travelling the country com- mitting similar offences. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Scott, Rochford. 6.— Romford ( County).— For bigamy, 9th September, 1899— ERNEST ARTHUR CROWE, age 46, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fair, oval face, hair ( turning grey), light brown, eyes blue; dress, dark blue serge suit, bowler hat. A general labourer, native of Horncliurch. Is said to have gone to Montreal. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 7.— C a r dI ff ( City).— For housebreaking and stealing a lady's gold keyless watch, black hands, roman numerals, gold safety pin, shape of a true lover's knot, attached; 1 gold signet ring, monogram, " M. A. P." thereon— SIDNEY JOHN LEAKER, age 39, height 5 ft. 10^ ins., complexion fresh, long features, hair light, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, brown overcoat, dark suit, light cap. A native of Swansea. Has served in the Glamor- ganshire Constabulary and the Royal Field Artil- lery. Has also been a publican. Frequents public- houses and plays tunes with a comb and piece of paper, afterwards collects money. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 8.— P ortsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a dark suit, " Hancock and Co.," on coat tab; 2 pairs of riding breeches ( 1 pair recovered); 2 silver watches C. F. T. engraved on back of one, " Simmonds, Fareham" 011 inside case of other); 1 silver albert with horseshoe compass thereon— HARRY WILKINS, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build, freckles on face, thin features, hair inclined to ginger, clean shaven; dress, dark suit, cap, horseshoe tie pin. Is a deserter from the Army. Absconded 12tli ult. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. KENT. 9.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 17th October, 1911, a watch ( recovered), also for leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Maidstone Union.— ALFRED CHECKS- FIELD, age about 54, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., stout build, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and moustache turning grey, eyes believed grey; wear- ing dark overcoat and cap, shabby appearance. A watchmaker, will probably solicit orders for repairs. May be found at Church Army Homes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 10.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining 8s. by false pretences, 17th ult.— FARNHAM, age about 47, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, ruddy, dimples in cheeks, hair ( turning grey) brown, appearance of being addicted to drink; dress navy blue costume, short jacket, black felt hat turned up at front, trimmed quill, brown feather boa, white knitted gauntlet gloves, carried an old black hand bag. She called on a tradesman, stated she was a friend of his sister in London, that she had lost her purse, aoid asked for the money to enable her to return to London. Is believed to have been engaged with concert parties in various parts of the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 11.— Bootle ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 12th or 13th ult., a pair of glace kid boots, size 7— DAVID KELLY, age 23," height 5 ft. 7 ins., stout build, hair light brown, clean shaven, vertical scar over right eye, tobacco stains on fingers, broad Scotch accent; dress, dark grey tweed overcoat, dark green tweed jacket, black and white mixture trousers, may be wearing the stolen boots. Absconded 13th ult. Was accompanied hy two men ( not wanted), ages 40 and 19 respec- tively. Stated they were about to open a picture show in Liverpool. Warrant issued. W." engraved thereon— HARRY MAYHO, alias ENOCH VERDIN WILD, age 23, height 5 ft. 9J ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, sunken cheeks, high cheek bones, clean shaven, artificial teeth in upper jaw, ' George and Dragon" on chest, bust of woman, snake and bird right forearm, flag, tombstone, butterfly, etc., left forearm; dress, old brown suit, dark braid round cuffs, grey overcoat believed gauntlet cuffs, dark mixture coloured tie, dark grey mixture cap, shoes. A painter. Native of Sal- ford, convicted 26- 8- 1902 at Salford P. S. of steal- ing 8s. 10d., and committed to Barnes Home Indus- trial School until 16 years of age; 1- 6- 1910 at Sal- ford P. OXFORDSHIRE. 14.— Ben bury ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 13th ult., a quantity of stationery and an old brown bag, covered with American leather— ERNEST TEECE, age 18, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair light; dress, dark tweed suit, green felt hat, button boots, black leggings, had in his possession a pedlar's certificate issued at Uttoxeter. Will probably have goods consigned to Eim in an assumed name, to local goods stations. Usually stays in small towns and hawks stationery. Was accompanied by a man ( not wanted), age 22, height about o" Tt'. 4' ins., complexion fresh, hair sandy; dress, blue serge suit, grey overcoat, bowler hat. A hawker. Warrant issued. SURREY. 15.— Guildford ( Borough).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque 17th ult., a dark browu van mare, 5 years, about 16 hands, hind fetlocks white, in good condition— C. PAGE, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., rather stout build, complexion ruddy, full face, hair and moustache brown, of smart appearance; dress, blue Melton overcoat, brown suit, bowler hat. He gave address York Road, Paddington, W. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildford. SUSSEX ( East.) 16.— East Grinstead ( County).- G. H. AUSTEN, described in Case 36, 22nd December, 1911, has been identified as Arthur Russell, Office No. 1463- 07, age 62, height 5 ft. 7f ins., complexion fresh, hair ( bald) and moustache grey, eyes grey, scar near left eye, blue marks right forearm; anchor, blue line and dot left forearm; dress, dark suit and cap. Has been convicted in London and Liverpool. ( For portrait see Case No. ' 62). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Anscombe, East Grin- stead. 17.— Brighton ( Borough).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 15th ult., a strawberry roan mare, aged, about 13 hands 3 ins., hog mane, legs nearly black, slight lump on right foreleg, corn on rigfit fore foot, answers £ o the name of Pol or Polly; 2 sets of black harness ( one brass mounted, other nickel), an extra collar and pair of reins, one collar, Brown leather, and a tradesman's cart, body and wheels painted dark green, picked out red and light green on wheels and shafts, " G. L. Hanger, Newsagent, Bookseller, and Stationer," painted in gilt on both sides, and " 30, Preslon Street" on tail board, " G. L. Hanger, Brighton, Sussex," in white below tail boarcl, two carnage oil lamps attached, shafts plated underneath, whip socket missing— T. EVANS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 ins., full face, drooping moustache dark, eczema on chin and under nose; wearing fawn colour tweed coat and bowler hat, gave address Bristol Road, Birming- ham. ( 1 pair recovered), 1 pair lady's box calf, lace, size 5|, golosh, Cuban heel, medium toe, straight cap— EDITH MARY WRIGHT, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, long brown mixture coat, tight fitting, large white bow, shield worked in colours lapel of coat, dark soft felt hat. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 19.— Dewsbury ( County).— For embezzling £ 2 15s. 8d. at Liversedge, 24th ult.— WILLIAM SAMUEL FULLERTON, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar left cheek. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 23.— Cheltenham [ County).— Committed for trial at next Quarter Sessions on a charge of sacrilege— ARTHUR CLIFTON, alias HARRY EVANS, ALFRED MITCHELL, GEORGE DAVIES, Office No. S. 66660; age 23, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes dark brown, scar left eyebrow, right wrist broken, scar left wrist, round scar left thumb. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 24.— Bristol ( City).— Sentenced to 6 months hard labour, 13th ult., at Bristol Assizes for obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences—- ALBERT TAYLOR, alias JOHN ALBERT EDWARD HENDERSON SOUTHERN, Office No. 242- 11, age 30, height 5 ft. 4j ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; a clerk, native of Manchester. He obtained lodgings and pro- duced a Post Office Savings Bank book showing a sum of over £ 100 to his credit. He had, how- ever, stolen the book and erased the owner's name and substituted that of John Albert Southern. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Bournemouth ( County).— Committed for trial at Borough Quarter Sessions charged with burglary— WILLIAM SCOTT, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey. Tattooed figure of female, Nellie and clasped hands right forearm, ring middle finger right hand, female left forearm, scar bridge of nose, 2 scars back right hand, ears pierced; dress, dark suit and cap, wearing a muffler. A bricklayer's labourer. Native of Upper Parkstone, Dorset. Has recently travelled the country with Studd's Roundabouts. Previously convicted at Poole, Chelmsford, and Sheffield. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 26.— D a V e n t r y ( County). - Committed for trial at Northampton Quarter Sessions April next charged with stealing overcoats— HENRY WEST, alias WHITMAID and WILSON, Office No. 2904- 98, age 51, height 5 ft. 7f ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), bald on top, eyes blue; several boil scars on neck ( right side), scar back left thumb, and left little finger, & c.; dress, blue serge suit ( much worn), black ( shiny) peak cap, muffler, heavy boots. A native of Camden Town. Is a well- known Railway Signal Box and Cabin thief, and is believed to be wanted elsewhere for similar offences. Information to Supt. Birrill, Daventry. SUSSEX ( East). 27.— B attle ( County).— Committed for trial at Lewes Assizes, 2nd inst., for burglary and larceny at Wadhurst, 11th ult., and similar offence at Battle, 16th ult.— JOHN MILSTED, age 47, height 5 ft. 7i ins., complexion fresh, hair, dark brown, turning grey, eyes hazel ( wears spectacles), scar right side of neck and left wrist; dress, dark grey jacket, blue serge trousers and jersey, grey cap, old blue uniform overcoat, red facings and piping, brass buttons. A labourer. Native of Welshpool. Convicted of a similar offence at Hants Assizes, 5th November, 1909, and sentenced to 4 months' hard labour. Information to Supt. Dalmon, Battle. WILTSHIRE. 28.— Salisbury ( County).— Committed to the Assizes in May next for burglary— CHARLES MITCHELL, alias PEPPER, KELLAWAY, JONES, WILLIAMS, Office No. 1152- 01, age 46, height 5 ft. 6A ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; scar right eyebrow, anchor, star, clasped hands, etc., left forearm. Native of St. Blasey, Cornwall. Information to Supt. Collins, Salisbury. PROPERTY STOLEN. ABERDEENSHIRE. 29.— Aberdeen ( City).— 26th ult,, a lady's diamond and ruby pendant, shape of a pansy, with five petals, each petal a pear shaped diamond, ruby in centre, set in platinum; 2 large egg shaped pearl drops, each connected with pendant by two small platinum chains, and a lady's platinum neck chain, trace link. The larger pearl weighs 8 grains, the smaller 5| grains, part forming the pansy weighs about 2\ carats. Suspicion is attached to a man, age 25 to 32, height 6ft., good build, complexion sallow, long thin face, hair dark, clean shaven, of military appearance; wear- ing blue overcoat, fur- lined black bowler hat, brown suede gloves, carried an umbrella or stick with small silver crook handle. He called at a jeweller's, stated he wished to purchase a wedding present, was shewn a number of articles, but none suited him, the shopkeeper suggested he could get other articles in a short time, the man stated he would call again, but failed to do so. May be one of three men who stayed at a hotel, 25th ult., and left 26th ult., in a motor car, No. LB. 3072. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Chambers, Aberdeen. C." 20th ult., from a hotel, a black overcoat, double breasted, plain black buttons, vertical pockets, flap to breast pocket; 1 light grey do., single breasted, grey buttons, vertical pockets; 1 pair green mix- ture tweed trousers; 1 old green mixture vest; 2 or 3 white handkerchiefs, blue striped border; I brass bedroom clock; 1 safety razor. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 33.— Cheltenham ( County).— For stealing, 20th ult., a horse, trap and harness ( recovered)— G. F. PARKER, alias ALEXANDER BROGDEN PARSONS, Office No. 655- 08 ( see case 37, 3rd overcoat, boots with plain fronts. Carried ail umbrella and brown handbag, and appeared to be suffering from asthma; may be found at good class hotels.
