THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2938. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted tii one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offcnces will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of Gi. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Evi ry announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force, against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7, Atmouncetiii nts concerning stolen property vuist be guaranteed by an officer of not less rnnk than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabctically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulai « • concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officii- signing the. request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result fiorn such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not liter than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covei ing letter. 12 All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street l'ost Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. THE EDITOR. LAMB, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion and hair dark, clean shaven, eyes grey, left leg shorter than right, lame; wear- ing dark grey blanket overcoat, bowler hat, carries a stick. A native of London. Warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For obtaining by fraud, 12th and 16th inst., 10 rings ( recovered).— THOS. MILTON BOWDEN, age 21, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion sallow, hair nearly black, eyes dark, broad forehead, large nose, long upper lip; of smart appearance; dress, light grey tweed lounge suit, dark overcoat, velvet collar, rather flat bowler hat with broad brim. A native of Hornsey Rise, Lon- don. Warrant issued. 3.— f Division.— For obtaining £ 10 15s. by false pretences, 31st October, 1911.— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark; wearing dark overcoat, hard felt hat. He represents himself as H. Pascall & Co., of London, Leeds and Manchester, calls at houses where circulars ; have beeen delivered, produces samples of household linen at a very low price, obtains orders and then induces persons to pur- chase dress lengths at exorbitant prices. Warrant issued. 1 M Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences.— THOMAS COOPER, age 60, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair, moustache and beard black, turning grey, eves ( deep set) grey, wears pince- nez; dres6, peppei and salt colour jacket suit, dark tie, bowler hat. Stated he had been left house property, produced papers to this effect, and asked for money to pay his railway fare. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 5 — Clewer ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings, 12th inst., a pair of lace boots, size 5, lined red satin; 1 green leather purse containing 8s.— — BRADLEY, age about 63, height about 5 ft. 4ins., complexion fresh, hair white, eyes dark, very plausible manner: dress, black coat and skirt, black bonnet with bow, brown muff and fur, wealing the stolen boobs. She obtains charitable contribu- tions by representing herself to be the widow of a colour- sergeant of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holding, Clewer. BUCKING HA MS HI RE. 6.— Newport Pagnell ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences 28th and 29th ult., at Wolverton.— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion and hair dark, clean shaven; dress, greenish suit with dark stripes, brown cap and muffler. Supposed a native of Barnsley. Represented that he had obtained employment as an electrician at the printing works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearce, Newport Pagnell. CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 7 — Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, between 20th ult., and 12th inst., 11 billiard balls ( recovered).— GEORGE HACKITT WILKINS, alias MACDONALD, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 ins., i good build, complexion sallow, broad face, high I cheek bones, hair dark brown, eyes grey. He was employed as a fitter at the gas works. Pre- viously convicted of larceny in London and Read- ing. Absconded 13th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 8.— Carnarvon ( County).— For stealing £ 13 from the porters' room at the Union Work- house, 5th inst.— JOHN ALBERT EDWARDS, age 55, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, prominent nose, red ; dress, dark grey suit ( trousers much too long), dark brown overcoat, with strap at back, muffler, light brown cap, heavy boots, underclothing marked " Carnar- von Union." He was admitted to the Workhouse on 21st August, 1911, and was employed as clerk. A native of Cefn, Ruabon, Denbighshire. Appre- hended. See Case No. 86. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. CHESHIRE. 9— Hazel Grove ( County).— The first described man, Case No. 9, 13th October, 1911, is now wanted on warrant in name of SAMUEL BROOKS. The 2nd described man has been apprehended, see Case No. 73, current issue. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 10.— NorthwicH ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings and money by false pretences, be- tween 13th and 15th inst.— WILLIAM FREDK. MARSDEN, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 5£ ins., complexion fresh, rather long features, stubby moustache light, prominent nose, Scotch accent; dress, dark brown striped suit, blue muffler, bowler hat, lace boots, wore a heavy silver double chain, lady's silver watch, gold signet ring with mono- gram, on 3rd left finger. He obtained lodgings on the pretence that he was about to commence business as a hairdresser, and borrowed money for the purpose of paying for his luggage at the Rail- way station. Had in his possession a number of picture post cards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thompson, Northwich. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Ilkeston ( County).— For stealing £ 1 at West Hallam, 29th ult.— HAROLD MASTYN, alius R. JACOBS, SHATZ, GREEN and MAR- TIN, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion pale, hair ( thick and wavy at back) black, clean shaven, eyes brown, mole right cheek and jaw; dress, long dark grey overcoat, with belt at back, dark trou- sers, large green scarf with mixture of white at ends, grey tweed cap with large peak. A photo- graphic artist; states he is a native of London. Previously convicted at Gosport, Portsmouth, Car- diff, Lincoln, and Flax Bourton. ( See Case No. 11, 16th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Ilkeston. DEVONSHIRE. 12 — Exeter ( City).— For obtaining 6s. by false pretences, 3rd inst.— ARTHUR PEARCE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., rather good build, complexion fresh, full round face, " hair brown, clean shaven, pronounced lisp or impedi- ment in speech, pimples on back of hands, sores on shins, stoops slightly; wearing light dust over- coat, dark grey cap. He calls at Y. M. C. A. lodges, represents to the secretary that he has obtained employment as a gardener or platelayer, and re- quires assistance until he has received his wages. Stated lie came from Cardiff and Paignton. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Exeter. A stage carpenter. Well known to theatre managers and to the theatrical profession as '' Teddy." Believed a native of Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daley, Bishop Auckland. 14.- Wes< Hartlepool ( County).- For abducting a girl age 13 years, 29th ult.— ALFRED HALL, alias PONTY and GARDNER, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fair, hair brown, ragged moustache light, eyes grey, flat nose, slight mark in centre, right ankle has been broken, limps; dress, dark jacket and vest, green trousers, dark grey overcoat, blue serge cap, dark blue scarf, lace boots, usually carries a stick with crook handle. A ship's fireman, native of Hartle- pool; is known to have sailed from London, Cardiff, and Barry docks. Warrant issued. Description of girl, age 13, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( 1 blue, 1 brown), abscess scar about the size of a florin under chin; dress, dark grey skirt, with black stripes, and row of braid one inch wide around bottom, dark brown blouse with blue stripes and dots, black velvet hat with black band, light three- quarter length coat, lace boots. A native of West Hartlepool. They left for King's Cross on 29th ult. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police, Durham. ESSEX. 15.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 8th inst., a watch ( recovered). — JAMES THOMPSON, age 62, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turn- ing grey) brown, eyes blue, very active; dress, brown jacket suit and cap, brown tie, lace boots. A painter and paperhanger. Protograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 16.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing, 16th inst., a bicycle ( recovered).— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion and hair dark, eyes crossed; wearing dark clothes, brown sweater, grey or green slouch hat, brown canvas shoes. Believed to have recently come from Canada. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 17.— Romford ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., a lady's small gold keyless watch, pink shaded dial, small pearl in centre of back, with red and blue flowers inlaid around same— NORMAN STANLEY, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 ins., good build complexion fair, oval face, hair light, clean shaved dress, brown mixture jacket suit, dark brown wool len chest protector, large dark cap, light lace boots A labourer, native of Moreton, Cheshire. Has served iu the Al- my. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.— Cheltenham ( County).— For stealing, 20th inst., at Winchcombe, a brown cob, 7 years, 14J hands, one hind leg white, hard substance at back of near fore leg, set of brass mounted harness, " J. C. T." on rosette, and a walnut- colour trap, railed around top, green spotted cushions, brass- mounted lamps.— A MAN, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., hair turning grey; dress, grey suit, and cap, waterproof coat, boots with plain fronts, carried an umbrella and brown handbag. Stated he was a hay dealer. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 19 — Bristol ( City).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 4th ult.— ERNEST STRINGER, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion, hair and eyes dark, clean shaven; dress, light brown waterproof coat, dark suit, bowler hat, lace boots. He calls upon small shopkeepers, represents himself as agent for the Blue Trading Stamp Co., obtains money by promising to forward the stamps ; has also obtained money by representing he was employed by the Advance Bonus Co., London, and by a firm of soap manufacturers. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. 21 .— Haddington ( Coimty).—¥ ov deserting his wife and family.— JAMES GILBERT, alias MILLAR, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion pale, long thin face, prominent nose, large mouth, upper teeth missing, hair and moustache dark brown, may be clean shaven, eyes grey, walks erect. A coal miner; has served in the Army. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 2 2s. will be paid by Mr. R. II. Hunter, Inspector of Poor, Prestonpans, for the arrest of Gilbert. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Had- dington. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing £ 45, 9th inst.— EDWARD LEWRY, age 24, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven; dress, dark tweed suit, dark blue muffler, dark cap, carried a small brown brief bag. Was employed as sculleryman at the Wesleyan Soldiers' Home. Absconded 9th inst. Has been in Canada and may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. 28.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing two pairs of boots ( 1 pair recovered), 13th inst., and 2s. lid., 19th inst.— A GIRL, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, blue serge costume with white lace yoke, large black straw hat, very broad brim, trimmed green and red ribbon, lace boots, may have Far- mer thereon, black woollen gloves. A domestic servant; native of East Boldre, Hants. Information to Supt. Davis, Aldershot. 24.— Southampton ( Borough).— For larceny ( lodgings)— CARLO MOLINARI, alias HER- TERICH, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., drooping shoulders, abscess scars both sides of neck, can speak several languages fluently; dress, light brown tweed suit, fawn colour mackintosh, bowler hat, or light cap, lace boots or shoes. A waiter. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southamp- ton. dark, of Jewish appearance; and 2 children. During the past five months he carried on the business of a second- hand furniture dealer, ob- tained goods by representing that he had a cus- tomer for them. Absconded 29th ult. Has been employed by the Wesleyan General, and Liverpool Victoria Insurance Companies, and may seek similar employment. He is supposed to be well known at various seaside resorts on the south coast. SO.— Southport ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 27th November, 1911, carved ivory articles ( crab; photograph case; 6 card cases; 2 pairs opera glasses; 2 vases on ebony stand, and a lady's work- box).— FREDERICK BURROWS, age about 23, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes brown, crooked nose; usually wefers dark clothing, cap or black felt hat. A native of South- port. Generally employed by antique furniture dealers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southport. 81.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing, 14th or 15th inst., a 9- ct. gold brooch, oval, flat piece of gold on front; 2 gold cuff fasteners, shape of a button, flat surface; 1 silver geneva watch, white dial, black numerals, loose case, very old; 1 old English lever watch, cream dial, plain back; a Post Office Savings' Bank book " Rachel Hamil- ton " thereon, showing a balance of £ 205.— MARK HAMILTON, age about 16, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey ; dress, grey overcoat, brown jacket, knickers with three buttons each side, plaid muffler, dark grey cap, red shirt, boots with pointed toes. HERTFORDSHIRE. 25.— Hertford ( County).— For forging a Post Office money order for £ 4 Is. 7d., 29tli ult.— JAMES BERKELEY, alias HENRY ED- WARD CLARKE- KING, Office No. 2781- 01. See Cases 22, 22nd December, 1911, 23, 12th January, 20, 16th inst., and Illustrated Circular 77, figure 12, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, turning grey, dark moustache ( turned up at ends), high cheek bones, rather prominent nose; dress, dark suit, long black overcoat, bowler hat. He re- presented himself as a member of a firm of builders and decorators, Monks Road, Lincoln. He stayed at an hotel for one night and persuaded the pro- prietor to cash the order for him, Warrant issued. Infomation to Act.- Supt. Pear, Hertford. HA DOING TONS HIRE. 20 — Haddington ( County). — For embezzling £ 3 10s. 8d.— JAMES DAVISON, alias JOHN WILLIAM EWERSON, age 31, height 5 ft. 9 ins. complexion fresh, hair fight brown, moustache light eyes blue; of smart appearance. A labourer native of Yorkshire. Has served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. KENT. 26.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing, between 20th ult., and 10th inst., a quantity of lady's clothing ( recovered).— WALTER CROLE, age about 33, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, large head and nose, both legs deformed, leans forward when walking, tattoo marks both arms and back of hands; dress, black jacket and vest, blue trousers, grey cap, white woollen wrap- per. Has served in the lst Royal West Kent Regi- ment. May seek employment as cook in military canteens. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 27.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing 10s. by trick ( ringing the changes).— A MAN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair grey, clean shaven, very fat face; wearing dark overcoat, bowler hat, carries an ash stick with straight head. Usually attempts the larceny at small shops. Warrant issued. 28.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 17th October, 1911, a watch ( recovered).— ALFRED CHECKSFIELD, age about 54, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., stout build, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and moustache turning grey, eyes believed grey; wearing dark overcoat and cap, shabby ap- pearance. A watchmaker, will probably solicit orders for repairs. May be found at Church Army Homes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 29.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining a quantity of wearing apparel by false pretences, 20th ult.— E LANE, alias WARD, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, hair dark, turning grey, small moustache light, turns his toes inwards; dress, grey jacket, light trousers, brown canvas shoes, hard felt hat. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion LINCOLNSHIRE. 32.— Boston ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Donington, 22nd December, 1911.— W. WARD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., rather slight build, hair ( frizzy) dark, clean shaven; wearing a long li? ht grey overcoat, dark grey cap, light lace boots; carrried a small camera with strap. He took photographs of several people, and promised to execute orders in about a week, obtained various sums of money, and gave receipts for same from an ordinary receipt book. Whilst in this district gave his address as " Meadow Gate, Bourne." Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Costar, Boston. RUTLANDSHIRE. 83.— Oakham ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences.— ARTHUR MASON ( supposed false), age about 21, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaven, slight cast in right eye; impediment in speech; dress, dark overcoat, dark jacket suit, and cap, blue front, light tie. He takes private lodgings and states he has obtained employment in the district, and makes an agreement to pay for board, etc. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oakham. STAFFORDSHIRE. 34.— Newcastle ( County).— For burglary ( 2. cases) at Silverdale, 14th inst.— JAMES LOVATT, alias CHARLES ARTHUR BOUGHEY and JAMES ELLIS, age 42, height 5 ft. ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, long cut scar left side of forehead, soldier and Staffordshire knot right forearm, G. A. B. and heart left forearm; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark trousers, brown cap, light brown mackintosh, lace boots. A native of Silverdale, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biddulph, County Police, Newcastle. 35.— Smethwiok ( County).— For stealing pig iron, between November, 1911, and February, 1912.— JOSEPH WILLIAMS, alias HYDE and SOPER, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, full face, bridge of nose flat, hair and slight moustache light; appearance of a pugilist; dress, dark coat and vest, brown cord trousers and muff- ler, peak cap. Grove, Smethwick. 36.— Uttoxeter ( Counli/).— For stealing £ 2 15s. from lodgings.— ARTHUR KING, alias ARTHUR WEBB ( supposed false), age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fresh, Roman nose, long face, front upper teeth very large and prominent, hair dark brown, small moustache: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1912. Writes from Aldershot to West End firms on note paper bearing the crest of the Royal Field Artillery, 131389, age 22, height 5 ft. ins., slight build, com- plexion, hair and small ( trimmed) moustache, dark, eyes hazel, sharp features, good teeth, prominent nose, walks very erect; dress, dark suit, bowler hat and personates Lieutenant Benson of that Regi- ment. Warrant issued. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 38.— Staple Hill [ County).— Escaped from custody at Lawfords Gate Police Court, Bristol, 15th inst., after committal for trial at next Quarter right shoulder; dress, blue suit, turning brown, tight fitting trousers, light cap with dark stripes, lace boots. A native of Kingswood, near Bristol. Sessions, for till robbery.— ALBERT WILLIAM GOLDING, age 30 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6| ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar left eyebrow, and below left knee, 2 moles Has served in the Army and may endeavour to re- enlist.
