THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1912 VOL. XXIX., No. 2928. 1, All communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOE or THE POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2, Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if lufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolem, property at a eost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. .4 remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or hit immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the j case may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICB GAZETTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not leder than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, cither at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should b § prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. LICENCE HOLDERS AND SUPERVISEES^ IN most cases in which Licence- holders and Supervisees residing in the Provinces fail to report themselves and whose arrest is consequently de- sired, the Editor is requested to insert the par- ticulars in the GAZETTE. Arrests on such infor- mations are made subsequently, but the particulars are not always forwarded for the purpose of the original information being cancelled as required by Rule 9 of the Regulations; the Editor there- fore desires to call special attention to this matter with a view to the Rule mentioned being invari- ably acted upon. Warrant issued. 2.— N Division.— For stealing, 4tli icst., from his lodgings, a brown tweed jacket ( white stripes), and tools— CHARLES DOWSETT, Office No. 1427- 11 ( see Case 21, 27th October, 1911), age 36, height 5 ft. 4| ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; tattooed woman, shield and " Girtie " right forearm, " G. Heard" back right wrist, scar left forefinger, dress, dark grey overcoat and jacket, grey trousers, black neckerchief ( white horseshoes thereon), light grey cap ( black stripes). A groom; native of Chelms- ford. 3.— P Division*— For obtaining, 1st Nov., 1911, by false pretences, a quantity of furniture. — FRANK COOPER, alias CHARLES WEBB, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion dark, long thin face, hair black, clean shaven, eyes dark brown; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A native of London. Warrant issued. 4.— v Division.— For attempting to obtain £ 12 10s. by a worthless cheque on London Coun- ty and Westminster Bank, Tunbridge Wells Branch— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark, drooping moustache, supposed turning grey, eyes grey; dress, grey overcoat, velvet collar, djark trousers, silk or bowler hat. He sent a boy with the cheque and a letter to a tradesman purporting to have been sent by a customer. Warrant issued. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For embezzling 4s. 3d., monies of the Post- master General— CHARLES MARTIN REEP, age 43, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair light, heavy moustache ( waxed at ends) au- burn, eyes grey, of smart appearance; wearing dark grey or green overcoat, double cuffs, hard felt hat. A counter clerk, native of Torpoint, Devonshire. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences— J. WILLIAMSON, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion dark, clean shaven, American accent; dress, dark coat and vest, dark striped trousers, dark overcoat, black soft felt cleri- cal hat, wears Masonic Badge in buttonhole of coat, and pince- nez. Represents that he has just re- turned from " Edmonton, Canada," where he has a farm, stays at hotels, and coffee houses, and in- duces the proprietor or people staying there to advance him money, as he cannot obtain his draft from his Canadian bank, and gives an I. O. U. in the name of " J. Williamson, The Hollies, New- port Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight." Makes himself friendly with barmaids and waitresses, to whom he offers marriage. Warrant issued. . Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 7.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining a gold watch by false pretences, 12th inst.— TWO WOMEN, 1st, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 ins., rather stout build, complexion and hair dark, wearing long brown coat, open at back, large black straw hat, worn low on forehead, boots with high heels, wore . a double- headed diamond snake ring on left little finger.— 2nd, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., slight build, complexion and hair very dark; wear- ing long black coat, black felt or beaver bat with cluster of cord in front. Both of smart appear- ance, and are believed to be daughters of SARAH SMITH, alias DAVIS ( in custody).— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fair, slight moustache light; dress, grey fawn- colour jacket suit, trousers turned up, several rows of stitching around bottoms. Had with him a brown horse and light cart, painted dark, containing car- pets and rugs, covered with a small green cloth. They travel the country in caravans bearing names of FRANK LOVELL, OXFORD, SMITH, COATS, and DAVIS, speak of an approaching wedding, that they want to purchase presents, or that they are placing a large amount of work in the district, thereby induces shopkeepers to pur- chase a rug or carpet for three or four times its value. Sutherland, Altrincham. 9.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing, between 6th and 9th inst., a portmanteau ( recov- ered)— FLORENCE RILEY, age 29, height 5 ft. $ or 4 ins., stout build, complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown, bridge of nose very narrow; dress, dark heliotrope costume, long coat, large black beaver hat, trimmed 2 large black ostrich feathers, brown sealskin stole and muff, white lining. A domestic servant; native of Swinton, Lanes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 10.— OakmefO ( County).— For stealing from a labourer's hut at Alvarley, 4th or 5th inst., £ 14 in a twill calico bag, fastened with rubber ring; 1 grey cap; 1 pair strong boots, size 9, recently repaired— JOHN RUSH, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins, good build, complexion, hair, and moustache dark; dre6S, dark jacket, dark cord trousers, light waistcoat, dark muffler, wearing the stolen boots. A farm labourer ; native of Ballaghaderin. May be found at farms where Irish labourers are em- ployed, or at common lodging houses. Has been previously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Renlshaw ( County).— For stealing £ 4 10s. at Creswell, 5th inst.-^ IOSEPH ROBERTS, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion pale, hair ( long) dark, eyes brown; dress, dark greenish suit, light cap and mackintosh. A native of Adwy, near Wrexham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. 12.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For embez- zlement, 7th June, 1911, and divers other dates— WALTER HARTLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, scar centre of upper lip, slight nasal twang. A native of Chesterfield; was employed as collec- tor by the Chesterfield Gas and Water Board. May be found acting as agent for " Bonovin." Absconded the beginning of December. 1911, Warrant issued. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Exeter ( City).— For obtaining food and lodging by false pretences— EDWARD ANDER- SON DOUGLAS, Office No. 1930- 08, age 35, height 5 ft. 6£ ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, " heavy dark moustache, hands hairy on back, mole under left eye, scar outside right forefinger; dress, blue suit with light stripe, bowler hat, double collar and front combined, dark helitrope tie, army shirt. A native of Birmingham. Has been a soldier, and is well- known at Tiverton and Barns- taple. May be found at soldiers' and sailors' insti- tutes or low public houses. Warrant issued. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Pontypridd ( County). — For stealing £ 5 from his lodgings, 4th or 5th inst.— JOHN WILLIAM JONES, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion and hair dark, long features, staring eyes, prominent teeth, of rather smapt appearance; dress, dark coat with brown stripes, dark vest and trousers, narrow black tie, green cap. He obtained lodgings 4th inst., on the pretence that he had been sent by a minister, committed the larceny, and decamped the follow- ing morning. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 11, . lOfch November, 1911; also wanted at Merthyr in name of Hugh Williams. Warrant issued. Isformation to Supt. Williams, Pontypridd. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. is.— Cheltenham ( County).— For stealing a copper furnace— KAJIRY FOSTER, age about 2- 2, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 fn « ., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven; dress, new dark suit, and over- coat, light cap. A rag and bone gatherer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 16.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining goods and money, by false pretences, 16th ult.— JOHN MEGSON, alios WILLIAM BODDINGTON, LEIGH, PIGGOTT, COTTINGHAM, etc., Office No., 444- 01 ( see Tabular Form, current issue, and Illustrated Circular 72, figure 14), age 58, height 5 ft. 6£ ins., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue ( of good address), scar end of right middle finger, on lst and 2nd fingers of right hand and back left forefinger. A native of Leeds. He engaged rooms in the suburbs, took a shop and warehouse, and had a quantity of letter paper headed " John Megson & Co., Importers of new and Rare Seeds and Bulbs, 26, Campbell Street, City Road, Bristol," making use of the paper to obtain goods and money by advertisements in the Bazaar of the " Exchange and Mart." Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 17 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 10th inst., from the Salvation Army shelter, a dark brown overcoat, rough material, strap at back and on each sleeve, flaps to outside pockets; 1 brown cap," broad crown, size 7; 1 black bowler hat, size 7, 1 pair black Derby pattern boots, toe caps, size 10, cloth lining, rubber pads on l? eels, 1 dark mixture muffler; 1 pair new woollen gloves with leather lining, and about £ 3— WILLIAM CHALMERS CRESSER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., good build, complexion sallow, full face, hair dark brown, may be growing a moustache, cast in one eye, female tattooed each arm ( one in red, one blue); dress, blue serge jacket, grey knitted vest, with green binding, dark brown trousers, dark green soft felt hat, may be wearing the stolen boots. Stated he was a native of Australia, and had served as a veterinary lieutenant in a colonial regi- ment during the South African War. Appears to be well acquainted with Yorkshire. Has been employed as a night watchman. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Alton ( County).— For stealing at Bordon, 12th inst., a Special Alder bicycle, No. 13361, 23 in Hropped frame, enamelled black, red lines, plated rims, rat- trap pedals, Dunlop tyres, North Road upturned handlebars, lever brakes, mud- guards, Mansfield saddle, transfer, " Phillip Bros., Aldershot, Special Alder," on head and back mud- guard, nearly new— ARTHUR JOHN PARKYN, age 19, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, anchor right forearm. Is a deserter from the 142nd Battery Royal Field Artillery; wearing khaki uniform. 19.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 1 at Oakhanger, 6th inst— A MAN, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair brown, front teeth decayed; dress, greenish suit, dark grey tweed overcoat, dark grey cap, muffler, rather heavy boots, plain fronts. Suf- fers from asthma, and may endeavour to seek ad- mission to an infirmary. A baker. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a silver Waltham lever watch, No. X42436; a double gold albert, round locket about the size of a shilling, photograph of a boy inside — GEORGE WALES, age 31 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion sallow, hair ( in'clined to wavy) and moustache black, several teeth artificial; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers and cap. A valet; has served in the Army. Believed a native of Newport, Isle of Wight. Warrant issued. 21.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to his bail at the Portsmouth Quarter Sessions 4th inst., charged with obtaining money by false pretences— GEORGE TILLEY, alias SEYMOUR, Office No. SI 16023, age 30, height 5 ft. 4J ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, bridge of nose very prominent; wearing dark three- quarter length overcoat, and hard felt hat. LANCASHIRE. 22- Barrow- in- FMrrttsss ( Borough).— For embezzlement — JOSEPH WAKEFTELD, age 26, height 5 ft. 5i ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, cut mark right cheek; dress, blue serge suit, green cap. A fish salesman; native of Barrow- in- Fur- ness. Fond of billiards. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. 23 — Bootle ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 8 by false pretences, 27th ult.— HAROLD HUR- RELL, alias JONES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion sallow, full face, hair and moustache dark brown, American accent; dress, light overcoat and suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Carried a brown leather brief bag. A pianoforte tuner. He engaged a young lady to take charge of a pianoforte saleroom, which he stated he had openeff, thereby obtaining the above amount as security. May be accompanied by a woman, age about 30, fashionably dressed, and 3 girls, ages from 10 to 14 years. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 24.— Northampton { Borough).— For obtain, ing 4s. by false pretences 2nd inst.— F. W. MOF- FATT, alias FREDERICK WILLIAM DAVIES and F. LITTLEWOOD, age 41, height 5 ft. 5* ins. complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, wears glasses, scar centre of forehead, small scar right cheek; dress, brown overcoat, dark trousers and vest, hard felt hat. A clerk, native of Boston; — HANCOCK, alias THOMAS EDMUND WHITTAKER and THOMAS RACE, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar right side of head, nose, and fore- arm; dress, dark grey overcoat, dark trousers and vest, green soft felt hat. They took a shop lst inst., stated they represented the Nottingham Lace Curtain Warehouse, Halifax, opening a new branch shop on 8th inst., advertised for canvassers, to whom they entrusted the sale of shilling checks, which were printed locally, accompanied the can- vassers on their rounds, and took the proceeds. The holders of the first hundred checks were each to receive a pair of curtains, value 3/ 11 without further charge. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Northampton. PEMBROKESHIRE. 2b.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County) For stealing a pair of field glasses— JAMES GRIFFITHS, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins., Com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, double tombstone, shamrock, thistle, rose and leek, with " Unity " underneath, crossed flags, crossed hands and heart left forearm, ballet girl left calf, stars and stripes right leg, coal scar on forehead. SOMERSETSHIRE. 26.— Glastonbury ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and larceny — WILLIAM GEORGE RICHMAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fair, hair light, large scar back of right wrist; dress, dark suit, dark blue overcoat, green cap, light lace boots. A native of Bradford- on- Avon, Wilts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sparkes, Glastonbury. ' 2.1.— Weston- Super- Mare ( Coxmty), — For embezzling £ 136 7s. 8d., monies of the Som- erset County Council— JAMES POTT, age about 50 height about 5 ft. 8 ins., slightly round shoulders, complexion fresh, full round face, hair ( bald on top), iron grey, heavy moustache brown, may now be clean shaven, long eyelashes, addicted to drink, has a habit of rubbing his hands together when in conversation; dress, fawn colour rainproof over- coat, light grey suit, black bowler hat, brown boots, wore a plain gold ring. A solicitor; native of Manchester. Previously employed as Assistant Justice's Clerk at Wakefield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Richardson, Weston- super- Mare. STAFFORDSHIRE. 2 » .— Leek ( County).— For stealing at Small- thorne, 9th inst., a £ 2 piece ( recovered)— HAROLD MORGAN, alias SAMUEL ARNOLD FRITH, JOHN BOOTH, SAMUEL JONES, TAYLOR and HAROLD LEWIS COLQU HOUN, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., rather stout build, complexion ruddy, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes brown, Scotch accent; drees, blue serge ( tight fitting) suit, dark grey overcoat, black tie, light cap. LINCOLNSHIRE 31.— Grantham ( County).' For housebreaking, 23rd ult.— GEORGE VICTOR SUMMERS, alias ANSCOMBE and MARTIN, Office No. 2055- 08 upper arm, scar on jaw; dress, navy blue suit. A painter ( formerly a clerk). May be found at common lodging houses. Has been convicted in ( see Case 18, 12th inst.), age 41, height 5 ft. 10J ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, tattooed palm tree outside left London and at Oxford.
