XXVIII., No. 2910. ^ fi communications for insertion in the POLICI GAZETTE, and aU communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOR OF IIII POLIOI GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to he thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8i. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of Gs. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Bvery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, ciiy, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear • number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged ky counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to ths number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanicd by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Sjpace being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent ijsue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted< will be given on application. 14. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. EDWARDS, age 23 to 25, height 5ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion sallow, hair very dark, clean shaven, thick lips; dress, light brown mixture suit, light cap, lace shoes, fawn coloured mackintosh, sleeves turned up. He took lodgings 26th ult., stated he had just sold a business in London. On 3rd inst., he called at a butcher's shop and produced a cheque, No. F/ T 334943, drawn on the London & Provin- cial Bank, Ltd.. Roman Road Branch, by " R. T. DUGGAN," in favour of JOSEPH EDWARDS, for the payment of £ 2 15s., induced the proprietor to hand him the amount, and upon the cheque being passed into the Bank it was returned marked " No account." Is no doubt identical with JAMES DENNIE. wanted at Ramsgate for a similar of fence, who is in possession of a cheque book stolen in London, Nos. from 334902 to 334945. Warrant issued. Foster, Abingdon. 5.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 15s., by a worthless cheque, 3rd inst.— JOSEPH DEVONSHIRE. 6.— Devonport ( Borough).— For stealing £ 7 14s. 6d.— HENRY RICHARD LEWIS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 10 ins. to 6 ft., stout build complexion florid, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes dark, Jewish appearance; dress, blue jacket suit, dark grey overcoat, and grey slouch hat. He took a situation as manager to a poulterer about ten days ago. On applying for the post he wrote from No, 2, Rhodesia Road, Stockwell, London, S. W., brought with him a testimonial from T. D. Harding, fish, game, and poultry dealer, 118, High Street, Ilfracombe, where he is supposed to have been previously employed. Left behind a large brown portmanteau, containing some bill heads with H. Lewis, fishmonger and poulterer, 512, Rom- ford Road, Forest Gate, Essex, printed thereon ( he informed his employer that he had previously carried on business at this address) also an agree- ment dated the 5th May, 1911, relating to a house as between Frederick Burch ( landlord), of 3, Ash- grove Road, Gooclmayes, Essex, and himself; at his time he gave his address as 34, Fitzwilliam Road, Old Town, Clapham, London, S. DURHAM. 7— South Shields ( Borough).— For em- bezzlement.— WALTER LORRAINE, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion ruddy, full round face, hair and moustache dark brown, may now be clean shaven, eyes brown; dress, green tweed jacket suit, black overcoat with velvet collar, bow- ler hat. A commercial traveller; native of Dalbeat- tie. An inveterate cigarette smoker, is fond of bil- liards. Frequents race meetings and dog handicaps. May seek employment with jam or grocery firms. S.— Clacton - on - Sea ( County).— For stealing £ 2 from his lodgings, 11th inst.— PERCI- VAL LYONS FERGUSON, alias C. S. ORD, age 20 to 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, hair light; dress, grey jacket suit; grey or green felt Alpine hat, button boots. Supposed a native of London. Had in his possession a Golden Sun- beam bicycle, 1911 model, 3- speed gear, No. 106346 or 108362, which he hired 11th inst., and will probably dispose of. May be found at skating rinks. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 9 — Clacton - on - Sea ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings 14th inst., a lady's dia- mond cluster ring, set 8 diamonds; 1 do. opal ring, set 5 opals; 1 do. . Iress ring, set 3 pearls and 2 diamonds ( all supposed 18- ct.) ; 1 lady's dark brown leather handbag and £ 1 13s,— SAMUEL SMOLr DERS, supposed a Frenchman, age about 30, height 5 ft 8 ins , complexion sallow, hair and long mous- tache dark, eyes dark brown, left- handed, French accent, dress, blue serge suit, brownish overcoat, black hard felt hat, or brown cap, large black tie, large double diamond pin, piece of red ribbon in coat, which he stated was a French decoration con- ferred on his father ; carried an umbrella with white crook handle. Represented he was connected with the Casino at Monte Carlo, advertised in local papers for two cashier clerks for employment there- at, and endeavoured to obtain money from appli- cants as security. AUBERT ( supposed false), age about 56, height 5 ft 6 ins., complexion bluish, hair grey, nose very red. Has the appearance of a hard drinker; dress, black frock coat and vest, dark trousers, straw hat, lace boots. Carried a black bag containing a camera. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. OXFORDSHIRE. 20.— Woodstock ( County).—.— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the union.— JOSEPH STOCK FORD, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes grey, large protruding ears; dress old grey suit, dark cap, black overcoat. A blacksmith. Has worked at Aston Clinton, Edgware, and Edmonton. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Snelgrove, Woodstock. 21.— Oxford ( City).— For obtaining goods and money by worthless cheques on the London < fe South Western Bank, Chelsea Branch, Nos. B. 041443 to 041447.— A. C. GLADSTONE," alias A. C. JOHNSON, and J. H. T. LIDDELL, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., square shoulders, long body, complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, very swarthy and of Jewish appearance; dress, blue suit, carried a gown on one arm.— W. They visi- ted several tradesemen 8th inst., in 4 cases the 1st described entered and gave one of the above names, purchased small articles, and in payment tendered a cheque filled in for £ 5, drawn in different names, the initials in each case being " R. S.," the second described, made a small purchase at anoTner shop, tendered a cheque, already filled in, for £ 5, the Christian names initials being " R. S.," as in the other four cases. In each of the five cases the goods were delivered and change given, and the surname of the payee and drawer were the same. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oxford. Stated he was employed in the telegraph office of the Great West- ern Railway, Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Tettenhall. WILTSHIRE. 25— Marlborough ( County).—¥ or stealing from a shop, 13th inst., a cash box containing £ 30 in gold, silver, and postal orders.— ARTHUR HASLAM, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., stout build, full red face, clean shaven, several upper teeth missing; dress, dark green suit, dark cap. Had with him two leather bags containing a dark grey suit and soft felt hat. A clerk in the boot trade. May attach himself to some religious com- munity ; is a good speaker. Warrant issued. Has in his possession a testi- monial from a firm of solicitors in Glasgow. He seeks admission to Church Army homes or similar institutions, and obtains situations through tho Labour Exchange. A chauffeur, supposed a native of Brighton. Had in his possesion 19 £ 10 Bank of England note, dated 15th January, .1911, Nos. 83254 to 72. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. MIDLOTHIAN. 28.— Edinburgh { City). — For obtaining goods by fraud.— WILLIAM JOHN FORTES CUE AUSTIN, alias WALLACE, Office No. S. 83055. age 27 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 ins., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, upper lip droop. s at left side, upper teeth decayed, mole right chin, brown mole right cheek ; dress, heavy brown overcoat, brownish suit, black to obtain a pair of motor tyres, requesting that they be sent to a local hotel. When in this citj he posed as an author, and wrote extensively under the nom- de- plume of " Harvey Start." He holdf a motor driver's license in the name of Fortescuf Austen, of 73, Leamington Terrace, Edinburgh, issued in this city 3rd October, 1911. He obtained several articles of jewellery of considerable value and at- tempted to obtain others, by representing that he intended making a present to a lady, and so got the articles sent to his rooms for selection. He also called upon several large motor engineering firms and entered into contracts for the purchase of a motor car for a friend in India and attempted cases, a brown overcoat, a brown suit, two hats, a pair of boots, and two shirts, both bearing the maker's name, " John Kent < fe Co., Liverpool," and one the initials " D. Hogg, Whitehayon. £ 100 REWARD. 63.— Whereas at about 10.45 p. m., 7th October, 1911, as GEORGE WILSON, stationmaster at Lintz Green Station, on the North Eastern Rail- way, was about to enter his house adjoining the station, he - vas shot, and died almost immediately. Before being shot he had evidently been attacked with a sand bag made from an ordinary cotton pillow- case, one corner bound with string, which evidently burst while being used, as a quantity of sand was found on the spot • It has been ascertained that a person of the following description purchased a box of 50 revolver cartridges of .455 calibre at a shop in Newcastle- on- Tyne, between 2 and 3 p. m. on the day of the murder. Age 20 to 22; height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., square shoulders, complexion dark sallow, thin fea- tures, clean shaven, stoops slightly; dress, dark tweed mixture suit ( cross pockets in trousers), cap, wore an ordinary silver curb pattern watch chain, across top part of vest. He was accompanied by a youth.
