T H E POLICE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 21, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2876. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF IBI POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clcarly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted ard no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on onr side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. A YRSHIRE. 7.— Irvine ( County). — For stealing, 3th inst., a dark heather mixture tweed suit, faint green and red stripes throughout, jacket cut low at lapels, round corners, vent at back, ordinary pockets, supposed " Muirhead, 122, Argyle Street, Glas- gow " on hanger; vest has two pockets on each side; trousers have two side pockets and a hip pocket; 1 light grey cap, " Bennett, Maker, Glas- gow," inside; 1 pair boots, rubber heels; 1 pair of braces, supposed white with red stripes, white leathers; 2 white linen handkerchiefs, one silk border with pictures of Japanese, horse6, < fcc., thereon, other coloured border; 1 meerschaum cigarette holder, end bitten off, in red leather case, lined white plush; 1 silver double albert, small curb pattern, small foreign coin as appendage; 1 silver pencil case, ring on end; 1 small penknife, two blades, nickle handle, " Mitchell's Whisky," stamped thereon— ERNEST TEAL, age 20, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, eyes brown, hair dark brown, clean shaven, Union Jack, thistle and rose right forearm, two white round scars on chest, mole on left shoulder; dressed, stolen clothing and boots. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing postal orders from letters, FREDERICK YOUNG, alias BURTON, age 16, height 5 ft 2 ins, complexion fresh, hair brown ; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark trousers, rubber collar, light blue tie, blue cap, lace boots. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For forging the in- dorsement to a telegraph money order for £ 4.— GEORGE COOPER, age 19, height 5 ft. 11 ins. to 6 ft., slight build, complexion dark, full face, eyes ( full) dark; dress, grey suit ( fashionably cut). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. CA M BRIDGES HIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining a cheque lor £ 1 10s. by false pretences, also for obtaining credit by fraud, a mail who gave the name of Rev. CHARLES STEVENS, alias OSWALD LYLE STOOLE, and addresses at Chatham and Cambridge, age 25 to 27, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, dark around eyes, of good address, quiet manner; dress, grey flanuel jacket and trousers, soft green felt hat, lace boots, grey tweed overcoat. Carried 8 books, one " The Theory of Legislation," On Hth inst. he took a room at a hotel stating he was studying for an examination at a college. Purchased a quantity of jewellery, tendered in payment a worthless cheque on the London and Provincial Bank, Ltd., Chatham Branch, also exchanged a similar cheque for one for £ 1 10s., hired a motor car, was taken to Leamington and afterwards to Northampton where he absconded. Warrant issued. 11.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 3s. by a worthless cheque on Messrs. Barclay & Co's. Bank, Kew Bridge, Sub- Branch to Brentford, No. 30- B/ 04646, 29th ult.— HENRY DENNIS, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., cleanshaved; dress, grey striped suit, blue and white tie, straw hat. He ordered 2 wreaths, and in payment tendered the worthless cheque and received the balance. Was accompanied by a man, rather short, clean shaven ; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Derby ( County).— For forging a cheque for £ 95 5s. Od., at Long Eaton, 10th inst.— W. WATSON, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion sallow, hair grey, few days growth of beard and moustache, rather blotchy face; dress, light brown check jacket and vest, grey trousers, large soft straw hat. He received 4 £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. K46/ 23301 to 4, London, 17th September, 1909 and 1 £ 5 note. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Richardson, Derby. ESSEX. 18.— Southend ( County).— For embezzling 9s. 6d., 10th inst.— CECIL GAMAGE, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 or9 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, slight light moustache; dress, dark grey suit and cap, mauve and white tie, lace boots. A journeyman baker, native of Oxford. Has worked as a stoker on a liner, may seek similar employment, absconded 10th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Maiden, Southend- on- Sea. 14.— Wit ham ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HARRY WOOL ARD, alias STUART, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache ( pointed ends) brown, one leg missing, uses crutches; dress, dark jacket suit, straw hat. An engineer. He was at Doncaster on 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lennon, Witham. Warrant issued. 16.— Cardiff ( City) Forabsconding with work- house clothing— WILLIAM JONES, Office No. 3255- 99, age 54, height 5 ft. 2^ ins., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) dark, eyes brown, blue scar bridge of nose, corner of right eye, ruptured right side; dress, dark tweed suit, blucher boots, muffler and cap, all stamped " Cardiff Union Workhouse." IT.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing £ 6 17s.- HAROLD FETHERSTONE, age 25, height 5 ft. 6| ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, arms and chest tattooed. A native of Ulverston, Lanes. Had in his possession a Royal Enfield bicycle, No. 226346, black enamelled, gold lined, 24 in. frame, Dunlop tyres, 3 speed gear, oil bath gear case. A lance- corporal of the 19th Hussars, wearing plain clothes. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 18 — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For deserting their wives and children, leaving them chargeable to the Parish— WILLIAM BAKER, alias STINGER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., inclined to stout build, complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light, eyes blue, small dent left cheek, 3 small scars right arm— FREDERICK GILBERT, alias BUSH, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., slight build, complexion and moustache, dark, eyes blue, scar left side of head, one ear disfigured. Navvies, may be found on public works. Warrants issued. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough). - For failing to surrender to his bail, 26th ult., charged with larceny — SIDNEY CHASE, age about 27, height 5 ft. 7] ins., complexion fresh, hair ginger, eyes hazel ; dress, dark suit, cap, neckerchief, brown boots, blacked. Frequents common lodging houses. May be found in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmonth. ISLE OF WIGHT. 20.— Newport ( County).— For stealing at Ventnor, 4th inst., a freewheel bicycle, composite make, black enamel, 26 in. frame, raised handle bars, 28 in. wheels, plated rims, roller lever brakes, nearly new Saxon back tyre, Brooks' saddle, " S " on lamp bracket- ALEX BIANCHI, a Frenchman, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., slight build, complexion pale, clean shaved; dress, grey tweed cycling suit, white sweater, tweed cap, badge in centre. A waiter. May seek employment at Hotels. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, New- port, 1. of W. KENT. 21 — Chatham ( County) .— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. Also for cheque frauds— LESLIE LEWIS, alias LIEUT. LYTTLE- TON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft 6 in., complexion dark, receding chin, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown; dress, dark tweed suit, black leggings, hard felt hat, fancy tie, lace boots, spurs, carried a stock whip. Had in his possession a cheque book on the London and Provincial Bank, Chatham Branch. Is also wanted at Oxford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rhodes, Chatham. W — Granbrook ( County).— For stealing at Marden, 5th inst., a cream colour pony, 13 hands, full mane, long tail, docked, a set of silver plated black leather harness, and a four wheel van painted black, yellow lines, red wheels, J. Huggett in white paint on carriage lock, FREDERICK ADAMS, age about 30, height 5ft. 8 or 9ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light brown, eyes hazel, dress dark jacket, dark tweed trousers, light cap, heavy nailed boots. M arg ate ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee) £ 5 10s., 8th inst.,— FRANK FISHER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, of good address; dress dark grey jacket suit, straw hat. Supposed to hav « been a solicitor's clerk. Is of delicate constitution and may become an out- patient of a hospital or infirmary. Warrant issued Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences, 3rd inst.— JAMES SHIP- LEY, aim SHIRLEY, Office No. S. 89846 ( Illus- trated Circular 99, figure 14). Age 31, height 5 ft. 6J ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; scar right eyebrow, tattooed haad of female right and left forearm, " Cissie" right waist, clasped hand left svrist: A valet. Native of Manchester. On above date the resident manager, Moslay Hotel, Piccadilly, Manchester, received a telegram, pur- porting to have been sent by the managing director of the Mosley Hotel Company, as follows:—" Have you ( Barratt) letter or telegram for me ? Open and wire extract of contents, Hanman, Imperial Hotel, Liverpool." A typed letter, which was addressed to Mr. Hanman, had just been delivered by post, was opened, and purported to be from J. M. Binns, Tokenhouse Buildings, London, and read as follows:— " I huve decided to let you have the Hotel requisites you require for Manchester at your price, £ 170, £ 80 cash and rest to follow at your leisure. If I can- not call you will find me at the Compton Hotel, Liverpool, either Monday or Tuesday." This was accordingly wired to Mr. Hanman, as requested. Later another telegram was received by Mr. Barratt and which had also been handed in at Liverpool, as follows :—" Manager, Mosley Hotel, Manchester, Barrett send me telegraph order for £ 25, payable to me at Compton Hotel, Liverpool, immediately, with you to night, don't delay business, Hanman." £ 25 was at once telegraphed and ultimately obtained by the man at the Compton Hotel, Liverpool, who was representing himself to be Mr. Hanman. It has since been ascertained that Mr. Hanman had no knowledge of the matter, and that the letter was typtd at the office of the Barlock Typewriting Co., Mosley Street, Manchester, on 3rd inst., to the order of a stranger. The Manager of the Bar- lock Typewriting Company has identified the photo: graph of James Shipley, alias James Shirley, as that of the man who had the letter referred to typed at his < fflce. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester, 25.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— Eor stealing £ 1 10s. by trick— CAROLINE LOW- THER, a gipsy, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 ins., good build, complexion fresh, tanned ; hair ( round plait at back) dark brown ; dress, black dress, grey check, three- quarter length jacket, tight fitting, black hat, several rows of red coral beads around neclt, red drop ear- rings, 5/- piece in frame as brooch ; a native of Leeds, may be found in company of horse dealers, hawkers or gipsies. She absconded from bail 18th inst. Warrant issued. 26.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For perjury, CAYZER KENDAL, alias KAZEY KENDAL and KINDON, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, tanned, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress dark suit, heliotrope collar and front; a general dealer, may be found in company of CAROLINE LONVTHER, Case No. 25. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. 27.— Warrington ( Borough).— For stealing a purse containing £ 1 7s. 6d.- JOHN BARRATT, alias FRED BARNETT, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., stout build, round features, hair ( turning grey) brown, usually clean shaven, short nose. Has been employed as a billiard marker. May be found in company of variety artistes. Sentenced at Manchester Police Court, 30tli June, 1910, to 6 months imprison- ment for stealing rings in name of JOHN CHARLES BAKER. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Warrington. OXFORDSHIRE. 28.— Oxford ( City). — For obtaining credit to the amount £ 5 12s. Od. by fraud, and £ 5 by false pretences, LIEUTEN A NT LYTTLETON, age about 25, height 5ft. 5 or 6ins., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes grey, puffed underneath, of good address, dress grey flannel jacktt and trousers, round soft light green felt hat, lace boots. He took lodgings at a University Lodging house 13th inst., stated that he would be studying for 3 years, filled in a cheque on the London and Provincial Bank, Chatham Branch, for £ 10, which he gave to the proprietor from whom he obtained £ 5, on 14< h inst., hired a motor car, and proceeded to London, told the chauffeur to call at a hotel for him the following morning It bus been ascertained that he left Loudon on 14th inst. for Cambridge where he took lodgiHgs and obtained credit to the amount of £ 8. 10s. in name of REV. CHARLES STEVENS, hired a motor car 15th inst., drove to Leamington and then to Northampton where be absconded. He obtained a cheque book on the London and Provincial Bank, Chatham Branch, by false statements, containing chequ. s Nos. 353063 to 353110 inclusive. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oxford. RENFREWSHIRE. 29.— Paisley ( County). — Licence bolder— THOMAS WILSON, alias TRACEY, STACEY and O'DELL, Office No. 8., 97,672, S. C. R., 270- 11, Case No. 88 of 12th May, 1911. Not now wanted. Reported in Glasgow. 5 TAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Stone ( Covnty).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HARRY , age about 27, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, teeth discoloured; dress, light jacket, light vest with stripes, blue serge trousers, dark cup. Stated be was employed at a signal box on the railway. Warrant issued. 31.— Stone ( County).— For stealing at Dray- cott, 7th inst., a Premier bicycle, 264 in. wheels, green enamelled, gold lined, usual paits plated, up turned handlebars, V shape, new chain wheel, 1 new pedal, 1 old rubber do., " Premier " transfer ( rather indis- tinct) on upright, rim brakes, Dunlop front tyre, nearly new Cambridge back tyre, Brooks' saddle, name plate broken off, No. 2 in white paint under- neath, black Lucas lamp and tool bag.— A MAN, age 80 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes sunken, several upper teeth missing, tattoo marks on wrists and back of both hands, of military appearance; wearing dark brown striped jacket and cap, golden biown tie, brown or yellow boots. Represents himself as a detective, obtained the bicycle to make inquiries and decamped. Information to Supt. Gilbride, Stone. St.— Stoke- on- Trent ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 8 13s. 4d. ( co- partner) 1st inst.— GEORGE HOUGH, age 65, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair grey ; dress, light grey shooting suit, dark neckerchief, black box hat, old- fashioned, lace boots. A collier, or boot repairer, na' ive of Bucknall, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Stoke- on- Trent. SURREY. 33.— Guildford ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— ARTHUR HASLAM, age 85, height 5 ft. 10 ins. to 6 ft., good build, complexion fresh, large face, liair light, clean shaved ; dress, dark lounge suit, or breeches and gaiters, appearance of a stableman. He was employed as vanman at a grocery stores. Absconded 2nd inst. On 15tli inst. two letters were received from Birmingham in which he stated his in- tention of going nortb. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildford. SUSSEX ( East). 34.— Hastings ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 1 5s. 6d. by false pretences, 24th May last, HENRY GEORGE, age 45, height 5ft. 6ins., complexion fresh, hair light. Formerly a licensed victualler at Canterbury. Warrant issued. 35.— Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing from a boarding house 15th inst., a gold watch, white dial, gold hands ( long one broken), glass loose, open face, old fashioi ed ; 1 keyless gun- metal watch, white dial, black hands, open face ; 1 gold oval opal pin, claw setting; 1 gold pin, set with chip of diamond; 1 9ct. gold brooch pin, plain band, about 3 ins. long; 1 gold signet ring, E. F. faintly engraved outside; 1 do., set garnet; 1 white canvas bag with string, containing £ 4 ( silver) ; 1 brown purse, spring fasten- ing, containing £ 2 2s. ; 1 lady's brown leather purse, spring fastening, containing £ 5 ; 1 new oxford shirt, green silk stripes, Drake, and trade mark a drake and Cheapside stamped inside collar, pearl buttons.— PENDLETON ( Case No. 33, 14th inst.), age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., slight build, complexion ruddy ( sunburnt, 6kin peeling off), cheeks sunken, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, grey cycling suit, brown stockings, blue and white spotted bow tie, white straw hat, brown lace uboots, snake pattern gold albert, gold pendant, locket and moon- stone attached. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Oonstable^ Hastings. WAR WICKSHIRE. 36 — Aston Manor ( County). — GEORGE FLATELY, Office No. 928- 11, Tabular Form, 14th inst. Not note wanted. He lias reported here.
