V OTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which > JN reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct plexion, light- auburn hair, clean- shaved ; fond of drink ; dressed in old light- coloured suit and cap. Offender forged the signature " Frank Pitt and Co." to a chpque for £ 2 on the Bank o! New Zealand, Auckland, and uttered the false document to Lily M. Olesen, grocer, Epsom. NEWTON. - 13tb instant, on warrant for false pretences, R. J. P. Ogsden ( probably fictitious), age about thirty, height about 5ft. 9 in., supposed nativn of New Zfaland, medium build, dark complexion, dark- brown hair, clpan- shaved. Offe'der obtiined painter*' material valued at £ l 15s. from Matthew Bennett, fainter, Karangahape Road, by falsely representing that the articles were for Benjamin Leonard, 77 Gieat North Road. PERSONS WANTED. PAPAKURA.— 3rd ultimo, on warrant for false pretence3, T. Bentley, age thirty - five to fo> ty, height 5 ft. 8 in., farm hand, native of Liverpool, England, sto ping shoulders, red nose, clean- shaved ; dressed in blue- serge suit and black hard hat. Offendi r obtained £ 5 from Gavin McMurray, farmer, by fal- ely representing that he was employed by Alfred Kidd, Waiuku, and empowered to buy and sell and collect money on his account. AUCKLAND.— 22nd ultimo, on warrant for deserting his wife, Mary Telfer, Cross Street, Newton, James Telfer, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 10 in., cook, broad build, fair complexion, fair hair and moustache, grey eyes. Offender was employed on the s. s. " Maheno," and is supposed to be in Sydney. NGARUAWAHIA.— 8th instant, on warrant of commit- ment to Mount Eden Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £ 2 10s. fine and costs for obscene language, Thomas Carroll, age thirty- four, height 5 ft. 8 in., miner, native of Ireland, medium build, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes ; fond of drink. AUCKLAND.— 16th instant, on warrant issued by His Honour Mr. Justice Edwards for absconding from bail, John Kettles, age thirty- two, height 5 ft. 7^ in., labourer, native of Scotland, stout build, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, dark- grey eyes, mole on right forearm and over right eye, wart on left forearm, several small scars on left forefinger. Offender was on bail pending sentence for forgery and theft at Gisborne, and failed to present himself when required at the Supreme Court. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, pages 491 and 516.) Pownall, David Pownall, age thirty one, height 5 ft. 11 in., butcher, native of New Zealand, slim build, sallow complexion, black hair turning grey, dark eyes, thin features; dressed in dark suit and black hard hat or cap. Baxter, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 6Jin., labourer, native of England, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, hazel eyes, prominent nose, clean- shaved, smart appearance; well dressed. OSender obtained goods valued at £ 1 Is. from Arthur Funston, manager for Trewby Bros., drapers, by falsely representing that he was of the firm of Baxter Bros., Palmerston North, and had contracts in hand at Manga- weka. He was last heard of at Feilding. Other charges pending. WELLINGTON.— 12th instant, on warrant for theft of a ladies' dress ring ( recovered), valued at £ 6, the property of Margaret Hamill, 9 Whittaker Street, Frederick Thomas Keeper, age forty three, height 5 ft. 6Jin., cook, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, brown hair and moustache, blue- grey eyes, scar near left eye and on left forefinger ; dressed in brown- tweed suit and black hard hat. George Moss, alias Crockett, failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child : Offender wrote to oomplainaut on 7th instant, and gave his address as " The General Post Office, Sydnev." DENNISTON.— 12th instant, on warrant of commitment to Westport Police Gaol for seven days in default of paying £ 1 10s. fine and costs for disorderly behaviour while drunk, David Drummond, alias Dan Daley, ago about thirty- five, height 5ft. 9in. or 10 in., sailor and collier, native of Scotland, brown hair turning grey, blue eyes, square jaws, clean- shaved ; fond of drink ; dressed in grey suit and light- grey cap. GREYMOUTH. — John Millar, alias John Francis O'Keefe, default of fine and costs : It has been ascertained by Detective J. J. Cassells, Wellington police, that offender is at present serving a sentence of six months for theft in Sydney. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, pages 192 and 232.) CHRISTCHURCH.— 29th March last, on provisional warrant under the Fugitive Offenders Act for deserting his wife, Agnes Higgins, 20 Charles Street, Prahran, Vic- toria, John William Higgins, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 9 in., butcher, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair and moustache turning grey, several scars under chin ; dressed in brown suit and daikgreen- felt hat. He was la- t heard of at Sockburn, Canterbury, on 24th ultimo. CHRISTCHOKCH — About 1st instant, on warrant for false pretences, Cecil Herbert Jeffries and Edwin Clarke. First: Age twentv, height 5ft. 3Jin., wood- turner, native of New Zealand, fair complexion and bair, blue eyes, sm < 11 no- e, " Kia Ora," butterfly, woman, & c., on left arm ; dressed in dark suit and straw bat. Offenders obtained £ 20 from Emily Denham, 27 Elgin Street, Sydenham, by falsely representing that Jeffries had entered for and was competing at the boxing- contests at Dunedin on 5th instant. They are supposed to have gone to Auckland on 3rd instant. TEMUKA.— 31st ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Timaru Police Gaol for forty- eight houis in default of pay- ing 7s. 6d. costs for drunkenness George Thompson, age fifty- eight, Insight 5 ft. 7 in., cook, native of Ireland, medium build, grey hair and beard, hazel eyes ; slovenly appearance ; dressed in brown suit. " Challenger": Offender's arrest is no longer desired, as he has been discharged from His Majesty's service by order of the Commander- in- Chief. He has assumed the name Jack Buckley, and is now employed at the Central Fire Brigade Station, Christchurch. ( See Police Gazette, 1909, page 47.) AUCKLAND.— Robert Barker, issuing a valueless cheque to Maurice O'Connor, has been arrested by Sergeant R. Lanigan, Newton police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 213.) Identifiable. TAUMARUNUI — 13th instant, from the camp of WALTER BOARD, Otunui, a double- barrelled hammerless breech- loading W. W. Greenes gun, left side of stock pared to fit cheek, and polished ; value, £ 30. Identifiable. Suspicion is attaohed to — Carter ( probably fictitious), age between twenty- five and thirty, height about 5 ft. 10 in , labourer, strong build, dark hair and eyes ; dressed in riding pants and leggings. Suspect went North on 14th instant, and was carrying a gun and portmanteau. TAIHAPE.— Between 28th ultimo and 3rd instant, from the bedroom of JAMES CARTIER, horse- breaker, a dark- brown worsted coat and vest, a double- case silver watch, a nickel- plated curb- pattern double chain, a silver match- box, a silver medal with " Best Youth Rider Jones's Buck- jumpers" on one side and " James Cartier" on other side, and several references; total value, £ 8 15s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Edward Hansen, alias Edward Jensen, <£ c., who is supposed to be identical with Edward George Hansen, referred to in Police Gazette, 1910, page 101, age thirty, height 5 ft. 3 in., farm labourer, stout build, dark complexion and hair, clean- shaved. METHVEN.— WILLIAM HUTCHINSON'S property ( except the monej) has been recovered, and Arnold Nixon charged with the offence by Acting- Detectives Osborn and Snow, Christchurch police. MISSING. « AUCKLAND.— Since 13th instant, Daniel Condon, age fifty, height 5 ft. 8 in., hospital porter, native of New Zea- land, grey hair and moustache, stooping gait; generally dressed in blue- serge suit and dark- grey overooat. He has been despondent, and fears are entertained for his safety. Inquiry by F. J. Fenton, Secretary, Public Hospital. DUNEDIN.— Since 15th instant, Bobert Walker, age forty- six, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., agent for Singer sewing- machine, native of Scotland, strong build, dark complexion, grey hair, cataract on laft eye, short and quick gait; dressed in grey- green rough- tweed suit and black hard bat. Fears are entertained for his safety. Inquiry by his wife, White haven Street, Lawrence. BALCLUTHA.— Since 9th instant, Thomas Collins, age forty- five, height about 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of Eng- land, slight wiry build, dark complexion, small black eyes, drooping black moustache ; dressed in black- tweed suit and straight- rim black- felt hat. He was suffering from the effects of liquor, and fears are entertained for his safety. Inquiry by his employer, Henry Hogg, contractor. INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY.— A warrant has been issued by the Central Police Bench for the arrest of Frederick Stallard Gib- bons, charged with disobeying a Magisterial order for the support of his wife (£ 105 8s. duo). He is fifty- six years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in. high, stout build, blue eyes, grey hair ( bald on front), grey moustache only; a tailor, recently working in Stanthorpe, Queensland, and now supposed to have gone to New Zealand. About March, 1910, he had a small shop in Albert Street, Auckland, wherein he made bird- cages and other wire articles. Inquiry by M. L. WHERE AS by Older in Council dated the thirty- first day of March, one thousand nine hundred and ten, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 33. of the fourteenth day of April following, regulations were made relating to the use of nets, imposing conditions and restrictions on the taking of fish, and providing for the more effectual protection of fish in the Taieri River and the mouth or entrance thereof : And whereas it is desirable to revoke Regulation No. 1 of the said regulations, and to make another in lieu thereof : Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon him by section eighty- three of the Fisheries Act, 1908, and of all other powers and authorities enabling him in that behalf, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Execu- tive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby revoke Regulation No. 1 of the hercinbefore- recited regulations, and doth hereby make the following regulation in lieu thereof. REGULATION. 1. No person shall put, throw, drag, draw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown, dragged, drawn, or placed, any net of any description ( except a landing- net) in the Taieri River : Provided that this regulation shall not prohibit the use of nets for the taking of indigenous fish at the mouth or entrance of such river, or from the mouth or entrance up to the ferry or bridge.
