OTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which • i-^ reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." AUCKLAND.— 13th ultimo, on warrant for theft of an overcoat ( recovered), the property of Walter Cole, value £ 4, Charles Palmer, age fifty- four, height 5 ft. 2f in., clerk, r~ Mve of New Zealand, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue- gray eyes. TAURANGA — 3rd instant, on warrant for theft as a co- owner of £ 14, the property of Thomas Joseph Cook, hair- dresser, Harry Powell, age twenty seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., hairdresser, native of Australia, slim build, pale complexion, fair hair, noticeable cast in one eye, upper set of artifioiai teeth, olean- shaved; dressed in dark suit and black hard hat. OPOTIICI.— 10th instant, on warrant for assaulting and robbing David Creighton Martin, farmer, of a black- oilskin rain- coat, value 15s. ( not recovered), a Man ( name un- known), age between forty and forty- four, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, florid complexion, auburn hair turning grey ; dressed in grey suit, brown jersey, and tweed cap. WAIPIRO BAY.— 3rd February last, that a summons may be served on him for drunkenness at Tuparoa, George James Grey, age about thirty- seven, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of England, medium build, dark com- plexion, dark- brown hair and moustache, blue eyes, tattooed on both arms; fond of drink; generally dressed in grey or light- brown suit and felt hat. Offender may be found associating with Maoris at Auckland. GISBORNE.— 1st ultimo, for failing to comply with the con- ditions of his release upon probation, William Henry Mann, age forty, height 5 ft. 5f in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, freckled arms, scar on left thumb. Offender was last heard of at Tuparoa on the 22nd April last, and may have gone to Frasertown, Hawke's Bay, where his brother resides. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 137.) HUNTERVILLE.— 3rd instant, on warrant for theft of a black mare ( recovered), value £ 30, the property of Frederick Small, Edward Hansen, alias Edward Johnson, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 5 in., farm labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, dark complexion and wavy hair, clean- shaved ; dressed in dark- tweed coat, riding- pants, new leggings, and black hard hat. WANGANUI.— 21st April last, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Prison for forty- eight hours in default of paying 14s. fine and costs for wilful oamage, Robert Horner, age seventy- one. height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer and gardener, native of Scotland, medium build, fr. sh complexion, long thin features, grev hair and beard ; fond of drink ; dressed in dark- tweed suit and black bard hat. BLENHEIM.— 5th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, George Moss, alias Crockett, age about twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., sailor and labourer, native of England, stout build, florid complexion, very light- brown hair ; generally dreFsed in light- grey or blue suit and black hard hat. CHRISTCHURCH.— 12th instant, on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his children, Joseph Daltry Billens, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 7 in., canvasser and stationer, native of New Zealand, slight build, brown hair and moustache, eccentric maimer; preaches at street corners. CHRISTCHURCH.— 10th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child, Cyril Wheatley, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 2 in., porter, native of Tasmania, stout build, dark com- plexion and eyes, black hair, clean- shaved ; dressed in grey suit and straw hat. Complainant, Georgina Waters, 183 Ferry Road, Linwood. CHRISTCHURCH.— 4th April last, that a distress war- rant may be exeouted upon him for £ 1 19s., John Stanley, age fifty- one, height 5 ft. 3 in., tailor, native of New Zealand, stout build, pale complexion, fair hair, blue eyes; dressed in dungaree trousers, old grey- oheck tweed coat, Crimean shirt, and black hat. Offender was last heard of at Westport, on 1st instant. ANNAT.— 25th March last, that he may be served with a summons for throwing offensive matter into a stream, E. Davidson, age about twenty- five, height 5ft. 5in. or 6 in., fish- hawker and labourer, slim build, sallow com- plexion, dark hair, brown eyes, small black moustache only ; fond of drink. DUNEDIN.— 9th instant, on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his children, Roland Henry Francis, age about thirty- four, height 5 ft. 6 in., clerk and barman, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion, small features, very dark- brown hair, brown eyes and moustache ; smart appearance; dressed in navy- blue suit and black hard hat. AUCKLAND.— JOHN ERNEST MOORE'S jewellery stolen : Joseph Thomas Christie has been charged with the offence by Detective A. G. Quartermain, Auckland police, and com- mitted for sentence. Bartlett, and James Edward Smith have been charged with the offence by Detective A. G. Quartermain, Auckland police. Christie has been committed for sentence. Suspioion attached to Arnold Nixon, who is supposed to be identical with Charles Chisnal ( see Police Gazette, 1911, page 233), age seventeen, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, stout build, fair com- plexion and hair, pimpled face ; dressed in dark- grey suit and cap, and may be carrying a swag. ASHBURTON.— 26ob ultimo, from West Street, the property of TREVOR THOMAS, a gentlemen's Majestic bicycle, 24 in. frame, B. S. A. parts, straight handles, black grips, front- rim brake broken, steel rims, rat- trap pedals, frame top- bar re- enamelled ; value, £ 8. Identifiable. KING STREET ( DUNEDIN).— 11th instant, the dwelling of GEORGE TILBURY was broken into and the following articles stolen therefrom : A ladies' gold hunting keyless watch, a nickel- plated watch, a gold- mounted- tusk brooch, a garnet- and- pearl- set gold bangle, and a small gold locket; total value, £ 5 14s. 6d. DDNEDIN.— About 4th ultimo, from the sale - room of Nimmo and Blair, the property of FRANCIS GEORGE SHARP, a gentlemen's black- enamelled free- wheel Record bicycle, straight handles, rusty sprocket- wheel; value, £ 5. NAPIER.— The following property, for which owners are wanted, was found in possession of JOHN THOMAS CHRIS- TIE, arrested at Hastings on 18th February, 1910, on various charges of theft, and sentenced to four years' hard labour: An electric lamp; a glass- cutter; a pair of gloves; a gold - mounted chrysolite pendant; a comb; two pocket- knives: two leather purses ; a wrist- purse ; a back eye- glass ; a reel of cotton ; a fountain- pen ; a nail- clippers in case ; a mag- nifying- glass; a piece of greenstone ; a tortoise- shell- handle pendant knife; a silver locket; a silver chain, with coin attached ; a pair of brass sleeve- links ; a gold band ring, stone missing ; a ladies' silver watch, No. 53963; a silver sovereign- case ; a leather and steel sovereign- case; a silver watch- chain, with gold- mounted chrysolite pendant ; a brown- leather wallet ; and a black kerchief. ABSCONDING FROM INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. » ELTHAM. — Charles E. L. Thompson, age sixteen' height 5 ft. 6in., labourer, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, brown curly hair, full round face; dressed in grey saddle- tweed trousers and dark coat and vest. Ab- sconded from licenFed service with Daniel Malone, farmer, Riverlea, on 21st ultimo, and belongs to Stoke Industrial I School. MISSING. MASTERTON.— Since April, 1908, George Lockhart Bailey, age nineteen, height about 5 ft. 9 in., farm labourer, native of Victoria, slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, left little finger crooked. He was last heard of at Hastings. Inquiry by his parents. WELLINGTON.— Since 20th April last, James Nelson, age fifty- six, commercial traveller, native of Scotland, very stout build, dark complexion, rosy cheeks, black hair turn- ing grey, dark- brown e; es, dark beard turning grey; dressed in blue- and- grey- check suit and black- woollen overcoat. He was last heard of at Grovetown Hotel, Blenheim. In- quiry by his wife, Ellen Nelson, 32 Hargreaves Street. CHRISTCIIURCH.— Since 19th instant, Bernard Hall, age forty, height 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in., company- manager, native of Scotland, slight build, auburn- brown hair, thin face, fair moustache ; generally dressed in yellow Harris- tweed suit and black hard hat. He wrote a letter to his wife at Wellington on 18th instant saying that he was going on a long journey, and he was seen at Lyttelton on the following day. It is thought that he may have lost his memory, and fears are entertained for his safety. He is well known to commercial men throughout the Dominion. In- quiry by his brother, 21 Hobson Crescent, Wellington, and T. W. Schofield, manager for R. G. Dun and Co., Christ- churoh. INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. BIRMINGHAM ( ENGLAND). — Inquiry is requested by the Chief Constable, Birmingham, with a view to ascertaining the present whereabouts of Arthur William Monk ( who is travelling as Arthur Burroughs) and Frank Jones ( who is travelling as Frank Jacobs), absconding bank- rupts, who left Southampton for New York on 19th April last en route to Australasia via San Francisco or Van- couver. Descriptions: First, age thirty, height 5ft. 5in. or Gin., cattl - dealer and butcher, native of Birmingham, stout build, full fat face, fresh complexion, dark hair, clean- shaved, blotch or tear on one cheek ; well dressed ; fre- quents drinking- saloons and places of amusement. Second, age twenty, height 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in., has been a clerk in the employ of Monk, native of Birmingham, dark curly hair, clean - shaved ; well dressed; frequents drinking- saloons and plaoes of amusement. Photographs of both filed in the Commissioner's Office. It is believed they have £ 1,000 in their possession, and that Jones is carrying it. If located, they are to be kept under surveillance, and an immediate communication is to be sent to the Commis- sioner's Office, Wellington. ( F. P. B. 225/ 11.) EXTRACTS FROM NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. At the Government House, at Wellington, this tentli day of June, 1911. Present : His EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL. IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred by the fifty- first section of the Judicature Act, 1908, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council thereof, and with the concurrence of their Honours the Judges of the Supreme Court of the said Dominion, doth hereby make the rules contained in the Schedule hereto, and doth declare that the said rules set out in the said Schedule shall come into force and take effect on the first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and eleven. WHERE under the Act of the Imperial Parliament intituled the Foreign Tribunals Evidence Act, 1856 ( 19 & 20 Vict. c. 113), or under section 24 of the Act of the Imperial Parliament intituled the Extradition Act, 1870 ( 33 & 34 Vict. c. 24), any civil or commercial matter or any criminal matter is pending before a Court or tribunal of a foreign country outside of His Majesty's Dominions, and it is made to appear to the Court or a Judge thereof by commission, rogatoire, or letter of request, or other evidence as hereinafter provided, that such foreign Court or tribunal is desirous of obtaining the testimony in rela- tion to such matter of any witness or witnesses within the jurisdiction, the Court or a Judge thereof may, on the ex parte application of any person shown to be duly autho- rized to make the application on behalf of such foreign Court or tribunal, and on production of the commission, rogatoire, or letter of request, or of a certificate signed in the manner and certifying to the effect mentioned in section 2 of the said Foreign Tribunals Evidence Act, 1856, or such other evidence as the Court or a Judge thereof may require, make such order or orders as may be neces- sary to give effect to the intention of the Acts above men- tioned in conformity with section 1 of the said Foreign Tribunals Evidence Act, 1856. 178B. An order made under the last preceding rule shall be in the form numbered 13A in the Appendix hereto, with such variations as circumstances may require. 178c. The examination may be ordered to be taken before any fit and proper person nominated by the person applying, and willing to act, or before the Registrar of the Court, as to the Court or Judge may seem fit. 178D. Unless otherwise provided in the order for ex- amination, the person before whom the examination is taken, if other than the Registrar, shall upon completion thereof forward the same to the Registrar at the place where the Court or Judge sat on the making of the order. 178E. Upon the receipt thereof, or where the Registrar is appointed to take the examination upon the completion thereof, the Registrar shall append thereto a certificate in the form numbered 13B in the Appendix hereto, with such variations as circumstances may require, duly sealed with the seal of the Court. 178F. Where the commission, rogatoire, or letter of re- quest has been transmitted to the Court through His Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, the Registrar shall forward the depositions so certified, and the commission, rogatoire, or letter of request, to the said Secretary of State for transmission to such foreign Court or tribunal. 178G. Where the commission, rogatoire, or letter of re quest has been transmitted to the Court through any officer or representative of His Majesty's Government in New Zealand, the Registrar shall forward the depositions so certified, and the commission, rogatoire, or letter of re- quest, to His Excellency the Governor for transmission to such foreign Court or tribunal. 178H. An order made under Rule 178A may, if the Court or a Judge thereof thinks fit, direct the said examination to be taken in such manner as may be requested by the commission, rogatoire, or letter of request, or therein signi- fied to be in accordance with the practice or requirements of such foreign Court or tribunal, or which may, for the same reason, be requested by the applicant for such order. [ JUNE 2L given in the order for examination, the same shall be con- ducted according to the practice for the time being fol- lowed in the examination of witnesses by a Registrar under order of the Court, and where the examination is \ taken before the Registrar the same fees shall be payable as are prescribed for such examinations. 178i. Where a commission, rogatoire, or letter of re- quest is transmitted to the Court either by His Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs or by any officer or representative of His Majesty's Government in New Zea- land, with an intimation that it is desirable that effect should be given to the same without requiring an applica- tion to be made to the Court by the agents in New Zealand of the parties to the proceeding in such foreign Court or | tribunal, the Registrar shall transmit the same to the Solicitor- General, who may thereupon, with the consent of 1 the Minister of Finance, make such applications and take such steps as may be necessary to give effect to such com- mission, rogatoire, or letter of request in accordance with Rules 178A to 178H.
