WELLINGTON, WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 1911. NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND.— Robert Barker, wanted on warrant for issuing a valueless cheque, was formerly manager for Mar- tin Bros., farmers, Rotorua. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 213.) AUCKLAND.— 10th instant, on warrant for absenting himself without leave from the s. s. " Clan Rosa," William Chivers, age twenty, height 5 ft. 6 in., A. B., native of England, medium build, fair complexion and hair, pug nose. Offender is an undesirable immigrant, and it is requested that every effort be made to secure his arrest. DARGAVILLE.— 7th ultimo, on warrant for deserting his wife, May Jones, at Dargaville, John James Jones, age thirty- nine, height 6 ft., farmer, slight build, dark com- plexion, thin features, dark hair, long brown moustache ; generally dressed in dark- serge suit. Photograph filed at Inspector's Office, Auckland. He is supposed to have gone to Darling Downs, Queensland. MERCER.— 4th ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his brothers and sister, John Taylor, jun., age about twentv- one. height 5ft. 6 in. or 7 in., flax- mill hand, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark- brown hair, small dark- brown moustache only; slovenly appearance. He was seen at Palmerston North, where he is well known to flax- millers, about 14th ultimo. Arrears to 2nd instant, £ 3 10s. WAIHI.— 6th August, 1910, on warrant for failing to comply with the conditions of his release on probation for theft, John Albert Hill, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 6 in., jockey, native of Australia, fair complexion, light- brown hair and eyes. OPOTIKI. — 8th ultimo, on warrant for obtaining two pairs of boots, value £ 2 2s., from James William Stark, boot- maker, by false pretences, Alexander Stewart McKenzie, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 8J in., carpenter, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, fair hair, hazel eyes, scar above right thumb. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 530.) He went to Auckland with Horace Lyford ( see Police Gazette, 1910, page 455), and a half- caste Maori girl name Foy. GISBORNE. — Albert Pyle, alias Taylor, wanted on warrant for horse- stealing and false pretences : It has been ascertained by Constable Wa'Je, Eltham police, that the offender was at the Ellis Post- office Coffee- palace, 46 and 52 King Street, Sydney, on 27th ultimo, and had assumed the name of Bert Gray. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 45.) HASTINGS.— 2nd March last, that a summons may bo served on him for a breach of his prohibition order, Cornelius Collins, age fifty- one, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of Ireland, medium build, fresh complexion, sandy- grey beard ; dressed in blue coat and vest, and grey- tweed trousers and cap. HASTINGS.— 10th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, John Scott, age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 9J in., cabinetmaker, native of Scotland, slim build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, sharp features, small fair moustache only, one upper front tooth missing; generally dressed in brown- tweed suit. He was employed as a clerk at the Paki Paki Freezing- works, but went to Auckland in March last. Complainant, Mary Macmillan Marrison. MOKAU.— 12th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Percy McGregor, age twenty- two, height 6ft., labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, dark complexion, dark brown hair, olean- shaved. He may be accompanied by a girl named Jane Chapman, who left Tongaporutu on 8th instant, for Wellington, supposed en route for Sydney. Complainant, Francesoa B. Payne, Okau. NEW PLYMOUTH.— 24th ultimo, on warrant for issuing a valueless cheque for £ 3 to Walter Little, hotel- keeper, J. Lindon Turnbull ( fictitious), age about twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., canvasser, native of Australia, slim build, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyes, clean- shaved, ono front tooth gold- filled. G in . canvasser, native of Australia, slim build, sallow complexion, dark- brown hair and eyes, clean- shaved, one front tooth gold- filled ; dressed in dark- grey suit, and hard black hat; fond of drink, and uses the expression " Come and have a spark." He mav be identical with Lionel John Melva. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 161, and preceding paragraph in this issue of Gazette.) WAVF. RLEY.— 27th ultimo, on warrant for issuing a value- less cheque for £ 2 to Edward John Miller, boardinghouse- keeper, J. Lindon Turnbull, age about twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., canvasser, native of Australia, slim build, sallow complexion, brown hair aad eyes, clean shaved. HAWERA.— 21st January last, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Dun can McHugh, age about twenty, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., labourer and bushman, native of New Zealand, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, clean- shaved ; generally wears dark- coloured suit and cap. He was last heard of at Koriniti, near Wanganui. Complainant, Winifred Craig. PALMERSTON NORTH.— 22nd ultimo, on warrant for issuing a valueless cheque for £ 10 to John Hurley, hotel- keeper, Robert Smith, alias Anderson, alias Dalziell. alias Barker, age about forty, height 5 ft. 11 in., farm labourer, supposed native of Scotland, respectable appear- ance, stoop- id shoulders, light- brown hair, stubbly brown moustache ; dressed in grey suit and black hard bat. He is identical with R. Smith, wanted at Wellington ( see Police Gazette, 1911, page 214), and probably with Robert Barker, wanted at Auckland and Hamilton for similar offences. PALMERSTON NORTH.— 9th instant, on warrant for disobeying an order of the Court to pay 10s. a week towards the support of his illegitimate children, Olaf Anderson, age fifty- two, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., engine- driver and labourer, native of Norway, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, bald, short sandy beard and moustache, one eye is artificial; generally wears a navy- blue suit. Is said to have come to Wellington. Arrears to 24th ultimo, £ 2 10s. PALMERSTON NORTH.— 15th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his wife, Anna Maria Jacobsen, Hans Peter Jacobsen, age forty- three, height 5 ft. 11 in., sailor and labourer, native of Denmark, stout build, fair complexion and hair, fair drooping moustache, stooping shoulders, awkward gait; generally dressed in dark suit aud hard black hat He uses a Dayton bicycle, No. 191909, and is addicted to drink. BLENHEIM.— On or about 6th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Charles Colin Wilkins, age twenty- two, height about 5ft. 10in., labourer, native of Tasmania, medium build, fair complexion, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, boyish appearance; uses top set of artificial teeth from which one front tooth is missing ; generally dressed in serge suit and dark cap. Offender obtained £ 8 10s. from Rioba'd MoCallum and Claude H. Mills, solicitors, bv f dsely repre- senting that he was a client of theirs named Woodgate. He may have gone to Hawke's Bay, where he formerly worked for a Maori farmer, or to Launceston, Tasmania, where his father resides. Other charges pending. GREYMOUTH.— John Millar, default of paying fine and costs: It has been ascertained by Constable Lambert, Grey- mouth police, that offender is identical with John Francis O'Keefe, alios George Miller. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 420, and 1911, page 192.) Ross.— 13th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his wife, Mary Elizabeth O'Brien, and two children, John Murdoch O'Brien, age tweuty- eight, but looks forty, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., native of Southland, New Zealand, medium to Btout build, dark to grey hair, grey eyes, clean- shaved, scar under hair on fore- head and at back of one ear; wears a greenstone ring on left little finger. He is said to have been employed by Easson and Co., Wellington, and at a sawmill at Te Tua, Southland. He may endeavour to leave for America. ( See Police Ga- zette, 1911, page 202.) LYTTELTON.— 14th instant, on warrants for deserting the s. s. " Tokomaru," Thomas Andrews and A. Olsen. First: Age forty- two, height 5 ft. 8J in., seaman, native of Ireland, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, grey moustache. Second: Age thirty- five, height 5ft. 6 in. or 7 in., seaman, native of Norway, stout build, fair complexion and hair, slightly bald, blue[ eyes, heavy features, fair moustache. A reward of £ 2 is offered for the apprehen- sion of each. CHRISTCHUHCH.— 5th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, George Clark, age twenty- four years, height 5 ft. 9in., chauffeur, native of England, slim build, dark sallow com- plexion, dark hair, clean - shaved; wears gold rimmed spectacles, and dark serge suit. He is believed to intend leaving for Argentina. Complainant, Christina Widdowson, Rotberham, North Canterbury. CHRISTCHURCH.— Snowy Sincott, wanted on warrant for conspiracy : It has been ascertained by Detective Caesells and Acting - Detective Mason, Wellington police, that the offender, in company with a man known as " Big Ike Fitzgibbon," was recently sentenced to three years for a similar offence at Brisbane. CHRISTCHURCH.— 1st ultimo, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for forty- eight hours in default of paying £ 1 0s. 6d. for his maintenance at the prison while remanded for helpless drunkenness, John Whelan. age forty, height about 6 ft., labourer, native of Ireland, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, broad shoulders, slightly stooped. CHRISTCHURCH.— 25th ultimo, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Piison for one month in default of paying £ 2 3s. fine and costs for obscene language, John Wright, alias Darkey Wright, age thirty- nine, height 5 ft. 8Jiu., painter, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes. CHRISTCHURCH.— 13th instant, on warrant for disobey- ing an ordcrof Court to pay 15s. a week for the maintenance of bis wife, Edward H. Rathgen, age forty- five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., cook, rative of Germany, slim build, dark complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, ginger moustache, face pock- pitted; speaks broken English. He was last heard of at Reefton in November last. Arrears to 10th instant £ 133 10s. SYDENHAM. 1st instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the future maintenanco of his unborn illegitimate child, Walter Reynolds, age twenty- nine, height 5ft. 6 in., leading stoker, native of Australia, very stout build, pale clear complexion, dark- brown eyes, blaok hair, clean - shaved, gold filling in front upper teeth. He was on H. M. S. " Pioneer," but was sent to Garden Island, Sydney, until the expiration of his service on 16th instant. James Guthrie, age thirty- seven, height 5 It. 8 in., miner and labourer, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, bald on top of head, brown moustache, blue eyes, smart appearance ; generally dressed in brown- tweed suit. Offender went to Duucdin, where his brother is employed by Messrs. Reid and Gray, but may have left for Melbourne on 16th ultimo. Complainant, Florence Bloom- field, Livingstone. DUNEDIN.— April, 1911, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, Alexander McIntyre, age tnenty one, height 5ft. 6in., brass- moulder, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, broad features, clean- shaved; generally dressed in blue sac suit and tan boots. He has an uncle named McDonald, a farmer, in the Wellington District, and a brother in Coolgardie, West Australia. Complainant, Fanny Sutton, Orbell Street, Dal- more. DUNEDIN.— 6th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for tho maintenance of his wife, Jessie Elizabeth Betts, Albert Edward A. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 120.) INVERCARGILL.— Joseph Thomas Christie, escaping from legal custody, has been arrested by Constables Bern and Rogers, Hamilton police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 174.) SYDNEY.— Samuel A Barnard, deserter from H. M. S. " Pegasus," has been arrested at Sydney and handed over to the naval authorities. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 132.) SYDNEY. — Edward James Heussler, deserter from H. M. S. " Challenger," has been arrested at Sydney and handed over to the naval authorities. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 509.) PROPERTY STOLEN. AUCKLAND. — 6th ultimo, from a bedroom in Alderton's Boardinghouse, a gentlemen's silver open- faced watch, No. 26208, with " La Trobe, College Green, Bristol," on dial, value £ 2, the property of JOHN WRIGHT ; and a ladies' silver open- faced watch, value £ 1, the property of BURKETT GERMAN. Both watches are identifiable. AUCKLAND.— Between 8th and 9th ultimo, from a boat- shed at Judge's Bay, the property of HENRY VIVIAN CHOYCE, a Huit of clothes ; a fancy waistcoat; a bunch of keys; a gentlemen's 15ct. gold chain, fetter and- three ovals pattern ( see No. 22 of Illustrations); a set of 9ct. gold sleeve- links, ^ plain oval pattern : total value, £ 4 10s. The suit, waistooat. and koys have been recovered ; remaining articles identifiable. MOUNT EDEN.— Between the 13th and 23rd ultimo the dwelling of AMOS HENRY JAQUES, printer, was broken into and a ladies' 18 ot. gold half- boop ring, set with five diamonds ( see No. 75 of Illustrations), value £ 8 10s., stolen. Identifiable. REMUERA. — 5th instant, the dwelling of WILLIAM GREER FLETCHER, Deputy Commissioner of Stamps, was broken into, and the following articles stolen: A 9ct. gold bangle, with imitation buckle on side ; a Kruger sovereign ; a gold double- bar brooch, with scroll on side ; a Savage Club badge; and a Gem safety- razor: total value, £ 3 10s. Identifiable. HAMILTON.— 12th ultimo, from the dwelling of ROBERT SMITH, a gentlemen's silver hunting lever watch, No. 204754, owner's name scratched on back of case ; and small curb- pattern rolled- gold watch- chain : total value, £ 3 10s. " Marama," between Wellington and Lyttelton, the pro- perty of ROBERT LOGAN, Ballarat, Victoria, a brown- leather Gladstone bag, containing the following articles : A dark- tweed suit; two white shirts ; three soft coloured shirts ; two pairs grey underpants ; a dozen white- linen collars; two pair* black socks; a pair dark- striped trousers; a gold nugget tie- pin; a book, entitled " Sheet- metal Worker"; a pair of nickel- plated pipe- tongs, branded " Hardley and Hardley" : total value, £ 11. The Gladstone bag, tie pin, book, and pipe- tongs only are identifiable. TIMARD.— 9th instant, from Wai- iti Road, the property of GLADYS CLARKE, typiste, a ladies' B S. A. bicycle, black- enamelled, wide handle- bars, blaok and white grips, brakes broken ; value, £ 5. Identifiable. PORT CHALMERS.— 27th ultimo, from the s. s. " Rakaia," the property of GEORGE TELFORD, steward, a gentle- men's keyless rolled- gold watch, No. 409919, and a silk ribbon guard with rolled- gold shield in centre and rolled gold keepers at euds; value, £ 6. Watch only identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Arthur Bartholomew, age thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., dark complexion, eyes, and moustache. He was quartermaster on s. s. " Rakaia" from Timaru to Lyttelton. DUNEDIN.— 3rd instant, from the dwelling of THOMAS MORRIS, farmer, Anderson's Bay, £ 3 in gold and silver coin. Suspicion attached to Charles John Sharp, age fifteen, tall for age, native of New Zealand, medium build, pale complexion, thin features, grey eyes, upturned nose, decayed teeth; dressed in dark knickers and grey cap. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 357.) PROPERTY RECOVERED. ORMONDVILLE.— MARY EMILY BOULTON'S property has been recovered : not stolen. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 124.) OAMARU.— Tho TOKARAHI POST- OFFICE cash- box and stamp- book have been found in a plantation at Tokarahi, but the contents are still missing. ( See Police Gazette 1911, page 47.) OWAKA.- ROBERT LANDRETH'S bicycle has been re- covered, and James Wylie Richardson arrested for the offenco by Constable D. M. Mackenzie, Owaka police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, pages 58 and 79.) DESERTERS FROM HIS MAJESTY'S SERYICE. From H. M. S. " Edgar." SYDNEY. — Henry A. Elliott, age twenty, height 5 ft. 6in., A. B., native of England, brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion.
