THE AZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2844. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clcarly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( is. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 64. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in. the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, cither at the office, \ ew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street l'ost Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces sliould be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. THE EDITOR. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police, the Photographs and de- scriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g.:— Steal- ing £ 1,000 from bank; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. PORTRAIT OFA PERSON WANTED. MURDER. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— Y DIVISION.- For Murder, JOHN FOUNTAIN BLISS, alias Dr. BLISS, JOHN FOUNTAIN and Dr. BLOTT, age 56, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., corpulent, very erect, complexion fresh, hair, moustache and beard ( American pattern) grey, may now have beard shaved, of smart appearance; usually dresses well in dark clothes, silk or felt hat. See case No. 31, 17th ult. Information has been received that this man is travelling as a commercial traveller, believed in confectionery, a « xd very probably in the Midlands. GRAHAM, STUART and GIBBS, age 50 ( looks younger,, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion tanned, hair ( bald on top and combed across side), dark brown, moustache rather heavy, light brown, eyes ( small and sunken) grey, large mouth,, one third finger crushed ; dress, jacket suit. A marine engineer; may be found in company of women. Warrant issued. S.— S Division.- For obtaining a situation by a false character— CECIL HALL, Office No. S99,886, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue; front teeth very much decayed; dress, da'rk jacket suit, grey cap, some- times wears green chauffeurs uniform. Well known to Leicestershire Police. Warrant issued. Information to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. may be found at common lodging houses. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Whitehaven ( County).— For stealing pencil iron ore ( recovered)— JOHN HOWLETT, age about 24„ height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, round face, hair ( curly) and slight moustache dark, eyes blue, teeth missing; dress, grey jacket and vest, old black trousers., blue muffler, dark cap, and clogs. A miner, native of Cleator Moor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hogg, Whitehaven. ANGLESEY. 4 _ Holyhead ( County). — For unlawful wounding.- - JOHN HUGHES, alias JOHNNIE GWILYM, age 26, height 6ft., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, light breeches, tan colour leather leggings, cap, lace boots. A labourer, native of Llanfachreth. See case No. 3, 17th ult. Warrant issued. 5 — Holyhead ( County).— For stealing a gold ring ( recovered).— THOMAS EDWARDS, age 20, height 5ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark, moustache brown, large prominent eyes, clasped hands one arm, anchor back of one hand; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, grey trousers, blue muffler with white stripes, grey cap, lace shoes. A farm labourer, native of Llanfachreth. See case No. 2, 17th ult. Warrant issued. Infoimation to Supt. Prothero, Holyhead. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Newbury ( County). — For uttering a forged bankers cheque and obtaining £ 14 6s. by false pretences— JESSE GREEN COX, age 38, height 5 ft. 10 in,, stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey on temples), black, small mous- tache dark, may be clean shaven, eyes dark; dog's head, heart and arrow & c. tattooed on one arm. A traveller, native of Nottingham, recently employ- ed by a firm of confectioners. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gamble, Newbury. 7. — Reading ( Borough). — For stealing a black silk skirt; one white jap shirt; 12 silver tea spoons ( shell pattern bowls), plain handles; one pair of silver tongs ( scissor pattern), 13th inst.— MATTINSON, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in. slight build, complexion pale; dress, blue serge coat, with braided silk collar, silk skirt, white silk tie, princess petticoat, no corsets, button boots, grey pink lined motor bonnet, grey veil attached, green mixture raincoat, wearing motor goggles. She obtained the property on approval, by representing herself to be the daughter of a clergyman in the neighbourhood. Is no doubt identical with woman ( Case 23, 24th February, 1911). She also obtained other articles which she has since returned per G. W. R. from Churchdown, together with a letter signed " B. R. Howard." Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. CHESHIRE. 8. — Chester ( City). — For forging and uttering a Post Office money order, 15th inst.— THOMAS COX, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, wore pince- nez or rimless glasses; dress, blue suit, fawn colour waterproof with Prussian collar, " Belfast Shirt and Collar Co., and Defiar on label inside. He purchased the waterproof, and in payment tendered a crossed Post Office Money Order for £ 8 15s. 6d. ( bogus),, and obtain- ed £ 2. Believed identical with HENRY C. WILLIS, case No. 29, 24th inst. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Chester. 9.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing: 2nd inst., a copper tray ( recovered),— MARTIN PATON, age 39„ height 5 ft. 7 ins., red face moustache sandy; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, dark cap, all old A farm labourer, DERBYSHIRE. 11— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For obtain- ing by false pretences, 15th inst., a gold brass and bronze image of a boy standing with a spade be- side him, about 6 or 7 in. high, antique; a lady's tortoise- shell card case, inlaid with silver and mother- o'- pearl, initials " L. E."; 2 serviette rings enamelled dark blue on copper, flowered, green inside, very old; gent's dark green leather dressing case containing several nickel plated articles; a silver pencil and pen holder; a pair of scissors, silver handles ; a white silk muffler and a travelling rug — GEORGE THOMPSON, alias RICE. Office No. 1326- 98, ( Illustrated Circular 95, figure 15), age about 60, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache grey, eyes brown ; scar back of neck, slightly flat- footed ; dress, blue jacket suit, black cap, turned down collar, smart appear- ance. He proposed marriage to the owner of the above property, stating that he was of independent means and owned a good class house in Notting- ham, and obtained possession of the articles with the supposed object of conveying them to his Nottingham residence in anticipation of the marriage. DURHAM. 12.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings 8th inst.— A lady's gold Geneva watch, key winding, white dial, black chapters, plain case with " S. D." on back of outer case " R. A." regulator ; lady's gold Albert, composed of small blocks of gold joined together; lady's long silver albert, oval link pattern; gold brooch, curb pattern, gold chain and safety chain attached; Cameo brooch, set round the edge with gold studs about the size of a pin's head, lady's face embossed in centre; lady's gold Gipsy ring, pink coral in centre, ( also an overcoat, lady, s gold watch, and a gold guard ; these were recovered in Manchester"). MATTHEW PICKETT,. alias DENNIS O'BRIEN, HARRY MATTHEWS, and ARTHUR HERBERT, age 24, height 5ft. 9in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin pale face, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes blue, cut scar right forefinger and elbow. Dressed in Midshipman's uniform,— a double breasted blue serge jacket, brass buttons, Prince of Wales' feathers on buttons, navy blue cap, gold braid, gold badge with Prince of Wales' feathers on badge, white tie with black spots, some- times wears white cover on cap, and white silk muffler. A ship's steward, native of Wallsend. Has been convicted at Wallsend, Sheffield City, Ponte- fract, Derby, South Shields, J arrow. North Shields, Seaharo Harbour, and is also wanted at Man- chester. Information to Chief Constable Carter, Sun- derland. FLINTSHIRE. 14.— Holywell ( County).— For stealing 4s. A MAN, age about 35, height about 5ft. 9in., slight build, complexion fresh, high cheek bones, hair dark brown, very thick, clean shaved; dress dark slate colour suit, with black stripes, green mix ture cap, long light check tweed overcoat. Had with him a lady's New Hudson bicycle, which he abandoned at Connahs Quay. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Holywell. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 15. — Cardiff ( City). — For obtaining 432 watches by false pretencecs.— EVAN LEWIS, age 36 to 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache light, eyes grey. A whole- sale warehouseman; may be accompanied by a woman of smart apppearence, who poses as his wife ( not wanted); also for receiving a. number of the above watches— C. MILLIAR ahus MILLARD and WALKER, a Jew, age about 30, short, stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( curly) dark,' clean shaven, small boil or red scar left cheek; wearing dark grey overcoat, hard felt hat, brown boots; a warehouseman, may be accompanied by a Jewess, short, slight build, supposed his wife. These men opened premises about August last and traded as EVAN LEWIS, Importer, Factor, and wholesale warehouseman, opened a banking ac- count, obtained goods from firms, and for some time transacted their business in a prompt and businesslike manner, by cheque, thus gaining con- fidence, afterwards obtained large quantities of goods, and in some instances tendered in payment cheques which were dishonoured at the bank. Absconded 4tli inst. Warrant issued. 16.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining a horse by a forged cheque for £ 21, drawn on the London County and Westminster Bank, Ltd., High Holborn Branch, and signed " Cooke, Frean and Co."— J. SWIFT ( supposed false), age about 36, height 5 ft. 8 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, and heavy moustache dark, in- clined to wavy, heavy eyebrows, small eyes, ner- vous disposition; dres^, navy blue suit, greenish overcoat, sac back, green and red striped silk muffler, glossy bowler hat, gold chain. Repre- sented that he was district agenti for Messrs. Cooke, Frean, and Co., London, and produced a card to that effect, and that he was staying at Newport. He ascertained that the presecutor had a horse for sale,, called upon him, and purchased the animal. Warrant issued. 17.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— EDWARD TAYLOR, age 47, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; wearing black coat, dungaree jacket, dark cap. A seaman; native of Birkenhead, was dis- charged from the S. S. Indian Monarch, at Ham- burg about 3 weeks ago and sent here by the Board of Trade. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. ESSEX. 13.— Southend ( County).— For stealing, 16th inst. a 15 carat gold open curb pattern bracelet, padlock attached, Ilk. X/ Z/- scratched on pad- lock; 1 ditto close curb pattern bracelet, padlock with 11. M. X/ WB/ Y scratched thereon, attached; 1 ditto bar and link pattern, set amethysts, 13 Hi X/ WS/- scratched on tongue; 1 9 carat expanding bracelet, 13K 1/ WZ/ Y thereon.— Dr. MacKEN- ZIE, alias HARRY CHARLES DERRY, age 38, height 5 ft. 9J in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, round face), hair and eyes brown, 3 cut scars right side of neck, large scar on stomach, woman with hand pointed at a bird right forearm, cut scar palm of right and back of one hand, 4 blue dots left forearm;, dress fawn colour Norfolk suit, light grey cap, lace boots. Previously con- victed at Blythe, Bolton, West London, and Here- ford. He took lodgings 14th inst., called upon a jeweller, and asked that the bracelets be sent on approval, which was done on 16th inst.;, he ob- tained possession of them, and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Slea, GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 18.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining a pair of boots ; 1 pair of slippers and £ 1 10s. by a seaman's forged advance note— W. MOORE,, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair ( inclined to curly) black, moustache dark; dress blue suit, brass but- tons on vest, blue overcoat, black tie, black soft felt hat, boots with plain fronts, appearance of a seaman. He took lodgings 7th inst., stated he was 2nd. mate on the S. S. Windsor, at Cardiff, obtained the articles, and in payment tendered the advance note, which was made payable to W. Moore, and signed H. W. Morris. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 19— Bournemouth ( County)— For obtain- ing a 3 stone diamond ring, and £ 10, by fals » pretences 20th inst.— HENRY C. WILLIS, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache ( slightly waxed at ends) brown; wore either pince- nez or rimlees spectacles, of good address; dress, greenish water- proof coat, blue serge suit, greenish Alpine hat. Had in his possession a lady's platinum and gold bracelet, padlock attached, 18 ct. gold double albert chain, and a £ 5 Bank of England note, No. D/ 26.54043. He calls upon jewellers, etc, purch- ases an article, and in payment tenders a crossed Post Office Money Order ( bogus); in this instance he presented a money order drawn at Aston Street Post Office, and two drawn at Constitution Hill Post Office, Birmingham, all three made payable at Bournemouth. O'BRIEN, A. HERBERT, and KELMORE, age 26, height, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight builcl, complexion YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 22.— Wakefield ( County).— For stealing at Castleford, 6tli inst.— a gold keyless Geneva lever watch, No. 833412, plain case, white dial, black numerals and hands, 1 double gold albert, fancy pattern, e/ Iz/- scratched on swivel; gold Ger- man coin and . silver matchbox attached ; 1 pair green- striped trousers ; 1 pair light lace boots, size 7; 1 dark brown leather purse containing £ 1 13s. 9d.— PERCY WILLIAM GAUNT, alias PERCY LORD GAUNT, age 32, height 5ft. 6in., fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, pointed chin, ears project slightly; wearing midshipman's uni form, blue serge jacket, double- breasted, square cut brass buttons, P'rince of Wales' feathers there- on, navy blue cap, gold braid, gold badge, Prince of Wales' feathers thereon, white tie with black spots, sometimes a white silk muffler. May be found at docks, shipping offices, or private lodgings. Is also wanted at Sunderland. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy mous- tache brown, eyes blue, initials tattooed on one arm, of smart appearance, well educated, dress dark check jacket and vest, black trousers ( wide legs), may be wearing the stolen pair, brown cap, black and white check muffller, and stolen boots. A good pianist and clarionet player. A drysalter or labourer. Has served in the Army and Navy. Supposed to have left for Hull 6tli inst., stating his intention of joining a ship there. CARNARVONSHIRE. 21.- Stoke- on- Trent ( Borough). — For Id- Bangor ( County).— For non payment of embezzling £ 34— JAMES BROMLEY, age about £ 26 10s. maintenance arrears, DONALD ROBERT 26 height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, WATSON DRUMMOND, age 52, height 5 ft. 6* ins„ hair brown, usually clean shaven, suffers from complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, rheumatism in legs, an! invariably uses a stick, large scar right of forehead, and old left finger, mole of smait appearance. For stealing, 20th inst,, a pair of gold solitaires, chased, rather large; 1 lady's gold ring, set topaz ( formerly a wedding ring); 1 do. single stone diamond ring, very small stone; 1 15 carat gold ring, set oval cornelian; 1 do. single albert, cable pattern; oval locket, blue enamel in front containing pho- tographs of a lady and gentleman; 1 silver key- less demi- hunter watch, blue enamel numerals, - GASTON PERLMAN alias GEORGE PULL MAN, age 18J, height 5 ft 1 or 2 ins., complexion dark, hair nearly black clean shaven, eyes brown, front upper teeth rather irregular; dress, blue serge suit ( American make), grey cap with band and large peak, black and white silk tie, lace boots, toes turn upwards. HEREFORDSHIRE. 26. — Hereford ( City)-— For obtaining money by false pretences. 18th inst.- WILLIAM STAN- LEY alius DUDLEY, age about 23, height about 6 feet, complexion rather pale, hair ( rather long) brown, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, dark green speckled overcoat and cap, fancy plaid vest, army grey Bedford cord breeches, brown leggings, celluloid collar, small bow tie, old boots, wears a leather watch- chain with horse hit in centre;— BERT THOMAS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 to 6 ins., hair light brown, clean shaven, rather full face red and blotchy; dress, light grey over- coat with large plaid squares, navy blue suit with fancy buttons on vest with figure of man thereon, celluloid collar, green tie, lizard brooch pin: natives of Cardiff. Stated they were agents for a firm at Cardiff, and were canvassing for the sale of mirrors with greeu leaves and swans painted thereon, each carrying a sample, called upon citizens, obtained an order for a mirror, and a deposit of 2s., gave a receipt for same, stating the order would be executed in about two days. Absconded 20th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable Hereford. KENT. 27. — Ashford ( County\ — For obtaining 2 cheques by false pretences, W. STANLEY, alias ANDERSON, age 24 to 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., completion pale, hair dark, clean shaved; dress dark suit, bow tie, hard felt hat, dark overcoat with strap at back. A native of Chilham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Ashford.
