77 NEW ZEALAND POLICE GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. WELLINGTON, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1911. NOTICE.—- For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the compila- tion of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, should be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All oommunioations concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Fischer, age about forty- five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., upholsterer, supposed native of England, respectable appear- ance ; dressed in dark clothes. He obtained the above amount from the oomplainant to buy material to repair some furniture, but failed to purchase the cloth or to account for the money, and left the district. HAMILTON.— 28th ultimo, on warrant for forging the name of William Laurenson to a post- office order for £ 2 and obtaining the money from the post- office at Hamilton, George Shaw, age about twenty, height about 5 ft. 8 in., shearer and labourer, native of New Zealand, clean- shaved, medium build, dark hair, small dark moustache just com- mencing to grow ; boyish appearance ; dressed in brown suit and light Boft- felt hat. AUCKLAND. — 6th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 2 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, William Scott, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 7 in , seaman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh oomplexion, fair hair, grey eyes; generally wears dark suit and green- tweed cap. AUCKLAND.— 24th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to the Inebriate Home, Rotoroa, for two years, Henry George Thomas Parker, alias Simpson, age twenty- seven, height 5ft. 7 in., journalist and clerk, native of England, auburn hair, blue eyes, thin features, long nose, clean-? haved ; vagrant appearance. TE AROHA.— 2nd instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 5 lis. fine and costs for procuring liquor for a prohibited person, William Meek, age about forty - four, height about 5 ft. 10in., labourer and gardener, native of England, medium build, dark sallow complexion, clean- shaved except dark moustache, long face and nose, slightly round shoulders; usually wears dark suit and soft light- felt hat. TADMARUNUI.— 24th ultimo, that he may be served with notice of fine for causing an obstruction in a public place, John James Meikle, age about fifty- two, height about 5 ft. 9 in., farmer, about 13 st. weight, thick- set build, side whiskers and stubby moustache, hair tinged with grey. He is well known throughout the Dominion as claiming and recently obtaining compensation from the Government. AUCKLAND.— 3rd instant, that particulars may be obtained as to her ability to contribute towards the support of Thomas Brennan, an inmate of the Auckland Industrial School, Sarah Nursey, alias Brennan, age twenty- nine, height 5 ft. lin., domestic, native of New Zealand, medium build, ORMONDVILLE.— 6th instant, on warrant of commit- ! ment to Lyttelton Prison for seven days in default of pay- ing £ 1 10s. fine and costs for being unlawfully in a hotel i during closing hours, Hector Saunderson, age twenty- two, height 6 ft. 1 in., shearer, native of New Zealand, sallow complexion, dark hair, slight build, clean- shaved, irregular teeth, large feet ( walks as if they were tender) ; dressed in a dark- green- coloured tweed suit and green hat. [ FEB. 2' 2 DANNEVIRKE.— 13th instant, on warrant for deserting his wife, Margaret Franklin, and leaving her without adequate means of support, Edward Franklin, age twenty- eight, height 5 ft. " 9 in., horse- trainer, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, clean- shaved, heavy dark eyebrows ( meeting in centre), slightly bow- legged) ; usually wears dark- tweed suit and hard hat; fond of drink. He was recently in Wellington, and may be found in company with Lena McLaughlan, formerly barmaid at Palmerston North. Her parents reside in the vicinity of the Basin Reserve, Wellington. WELLINGTON.— 25th Maroh, 1908, on warrant of com- mitment to Wellington Prison for three months for disobey- ing an order of Court to pay 10s. a week for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Frederick Parslow, age fifty- four, height 5 ft. in., bricklayer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, heavy brown moustache and goatee. WELLINGTON.— 14th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Joseph Beveridge, age twenty- eight, height 5ft. 6 in., flax- cutter, stout build, fair hair, blue eyes, bullet- scar over one eyebrow. He was a member of one of the South Afrioan contingents. Complainant, Margaret McGowan, Wellington. WELLINGTON.— 8th instant, on warrant for being absent without leave from the s. s. " Turakina," John Symons, age thirty- nine, height 5 ft. 8Jin., fireman, native of Ireland, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes, coat of arms and anchor on right arm, sailor and lass on left arm. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for his appre- hension. WELLINGTON.— 25th ultimo, on warrant for deserting his wife, Carrie Philp, and leaving her without adequate means of support, Robert Morrison Douglas Philp, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 11 in., bank olerk, native of Aus- tralia, stout build, clean- shaved, dark hair, brown eyes, false teeth in front ( one broken), nose slightly crooked, pigeon- toed, fond of playing piano ; dresses well, generally in dark- tweed suit and Panama or felt hat; wears band ring with " Bob" thereon, red star trinket on chain. Offender was a clerk in the bank at Clermont, Queensland, and in Decem- ber last deserted his wife and came to New Zealand, accom- panied by Miss Christensen. They are supposed to have returned to Sydney. WELLINGTON. — 13th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Tongariro," John Whylock and D. Munro. First: Age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 10 in., trimmer, native of England, fair oomplexion, light- ginger hair, grey eyes, fair drooping moustache. Second : Age thirty - five, height 5 ft. 9in., fireman, native of Scotland, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, face pock- pitted. A reward of £ 2 each will be paid for their apprehension. WELLINGTON.— 14th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, John Curtis, age about twenty- one, height 5 ft. 8 in., carpenter, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair inclined to be curly ( parted in the oentr^); usually wears a cap. Complainant, Annie Thorstensen. AKAROA.— 4th instant, on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for forty- eight hours in default of paying 15s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Joseph McIlroy, age twenty- nine, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zea- land, medium build, dark complexion, dark- brown hair, brown eyes, heavy dark moustache only. His brother, Hugh McIlroy, is a well- known ex- jockey. CHRISTCHURCH.— 7th ultimo, on warrant for indecently assaulting Alice Hensley, a child ten years of age, William Hamilton Ferguson Gibson, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 8J in., baker, native of Australia, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, medium build, clean - shaved ; dressed in dark sac suit, and black hard hat. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 269.) He is supposed to have come to the North Island. CHRISTCHURCH.— 15th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child, William Gill, age about thirty- eight, height 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in., billiard- marker and hotel porter, native of England, fair complexion and hair, rather bald, brushes his hair across the bald portion, small blue eyes, fair moustache, teeth wide apart in front, wears a gold ring with buckle on it; dressed in dark or brown suit. CHRISTCHURCH.— 12th ultimo, on two warrants of com- mitment to Wellington Prison for one month on each in default of paying £ 3 lis. and £ 3 17s. for trespassing on the Riccarton Racecourse without being licensed as a bookmaker, J. Darcy, age thirty- five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., book- maker, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark oom- plexion, black hair, brown eyes, long dark moustache; usually wears dark suit and hard black hat. CHRISTCHURCH.— 24th ultimo, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for twenty- four hours in default of paying 8s. fine and costs for drunkenness, George Wil- liams, alias Haigh, age thirty- nine, height 5 ft., labourer and bootmaker, native of New Zealand, short sturdy build, active appearance, florid complexion, reddish- brown hair; dressed in an ill- fitting suit and old hard hat. ASHBURTON.— 14th instant, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Emma Ibell, and child with means of sup- port, Robert Ibell, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 4$ in., labourer, native of New Zealand, dark complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, thin nose, flowers in wreath tattooed on right arm. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 142.) TIMARU.— 8th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Clan Shaw," Robert Scott and David Downes. First: Age about thirty- nine, height 5 ft. 9 in., fireman, native of Scotland, slight build, dark hair and moustache, pimple on nose, slovenly style of walking. Second: Age twenty- six, height 5ft. 8in., native of Scot- land, fair hair, clean- shaved, broad chest. They may be found in the country harvesting. RANFURLY.— 1st ultimo, on warrant for obtaining £ 1 from Albert Miller by falsely renresenting that it was for James Herlihy, Robert Ward, age about twenty- four, height about 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, slim build, large loose mouth, projecting ears, clean- shaved, scar or lump over one eye, dark hair; dressed in green- coloured suit or suit with green stripe through it, wears kerchief and half elastic- side boots; jockey appearanoe. DUNEDIN.— 7th instant, on warrant for deserting his wife, Jessie Elizabeth Betts, and leaving her without ade- quate means of support, Albert Edward A. Betts, age thirty, height 5ft. 7 in., tram- oonductor and labourer, native of Melbourne, medium build, dark hair, sallow complexion, blue eyes, clean- shaved or may have a moustache; probably dressed in dark suit, green slouch hat, and tan boots. WAITATI.— 1st instant, for escaping from the Seaoliff Mental Hospital, James Anstew Taylor, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 8 in., 13 st. weight, well built, walks with a limp ( right foot), dark complexion and hair, dark moustache only; dressed in grey- tweed suit, slouoh hat, lace- up boots ( one heel raised), underolothing branded with arrow en- closed in a circle. He was committed from Dunedin, and has a brother in Nelson. MILTON.— 14th ultimo, on warrant for obtaining £ 1 2s. from Robert Robertson by means of a valueless cheque, James Eastes, age forty- eight, height 5 ft. 6| in., cycle- agent, native of England, stout build, fair complexion, light- brown hair, dark- blue eyes, clean- shaved except fair mous- tache ; dressed when last seen in a brown- tweed coat and vest. ( See Police Gazette, 1899, page 140.) The oheque was made out on the National Bank of New Zealand, Waimate. There is no branch of the bank there. Offender is said to be well known at Waimate. INVERCARGILL.— 16th instant, on warrant for deserting his wife, Isabella Harriet Shea, at Invercargill, Terence Shea, age twenty - two, height 5 ft. 8 in., letter- carrier, native of New Zealand, dark hair and complexion, clean- shaved, blue eyes, thin face, pointed chin with dimple, prominent teeth, right shoulder higher than left, " T. S. " tattooed above wrist ( probably left); usually wears a blue suit and brown cap. Photograph filed in the Inspector's Office, Invercargill. Gardner, alias George Thomas Sullivan, alias Sutherland, false pretences, has been arrested by Aoting- Detective Powell, on information supplied by Acting- Detective Issell, Auckland police, and committed to the Supreme Court for sentenoe. ( See Police Gazette, 1909, pages 191 and 455.) NAPIER.— James Wilson, default of maintenance, has been found by Sergeant Beattie at Taihape. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 23.) FEILDING.— Percy William Gibbs, disobeying main- tenance order, has been arrested by Constable Larmer, Porangahau police, and remanded to Feilding. ( See Police Gazette, 1906, page 227.) WELLINGTON. — Thomas Quinn, deserting from the " Clan Grant," has been arrested by Constable J. A. Dempsey, Wellington police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 38.) BLENHEIM.— John William Burke, theft, has been arrested by Constable Sheary, Takaka police, and remanded to Blenheim. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 46.) ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 47.) PROPERTY STOLEN. TOKOMARU BAY— 7th instant, from a cottage, the property of WILLIAM GLASS, carpenter, a silver Geneva watch, " W. S. Glass " insoribed on the inside ; a Bengal razor with black handle, in a blaok case : value, £ 3 5s. Identifiable. NAPIER.— 13th ultimo, from Hastings Street, the property of FREDERICK PULFORT, a gentlemen's bioycle, No. 291603, " Governor Premier Cycle- works" on head, black- enamelled frame with red lines, baok- pedalling brake, Eadie Coaster hub, outrigger turned- down handles, black handlo- grips ; value, £ 14. Identifiable. WELLINGTON.— 4th or 5th instant, the shop of FRANCIS KITTO ( trading as Kitto and Graham) was broken into, and the following goods stolen: Twenty- five yards of tweed, black ground with faint orange- and- blue- tinted stripe, value £ 12 10s.; twelve and a quarter yards of tweed, black ground with small indistinot white speckled cheok, value £ 6 2s. 6d. Identifiable by general appearance, if found in the roll. There is supposed to be very little of it in New Zealand. WELLINGTON.— 6th instant, from the bedroom of the Rev. H. BURNETT, Willowbank Boardinghouse, a gold lever hunting- watch, No. 41766, " H. B. B." on front case. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 67.) Suspicion strongly attached to Robert Ferguson, alias James Hutchinson. ( See Police Gazette, 1905, page 69, and current Gazette, page 66.) He has gone to Greymouth, where he will probably get employment as cook. WESTPORT.— 12th instant, from the cabin of WALTER R. ERSKINE ( ironmoulder, Greymouth), on thes. s. " Arahura," at Nelson, a silver hunting- watch, maker Baume, value £ 3; an albert curb chain with silver match- box and greenstone pendant attached, value 10s. Identifiable. RAKAIA.— 13th instant, the dwelling of JOHN THOMAS STEVENSON was broken into, and the following stolen : A dark- brown tweed vest with small dark- blue and green stripe, about size 5 ; a Bengal razor ; a pair of light boots, about size 8 ; a light- grey felt hat; and a nickel- plated double- bladed pocket- knife, about 3in. long, with " Compliments, Hotel Chertsey," thereon: value, £ 1 17s. Identifiable. Suspioion attached to William Duncan, alias Billy Eriwata, a Burnham absconder, aboriginal, eighteen years of age, about 5 ft. 4 in. high, good build, large mouth, copper com- plexion, black hair, brown eyes, flat nose ; supposed dressed in grey- moleskin trousers, light- grey tweed coat and cap, heavy lace- up boots ; may be wearing stolen vest, boots, and hat. COALGATE.— About 27th December last, from the wool- shed of GEORGE CECIL DERRETT, farmer, six fleeces of crossbred wool, branded " Y6 " in blaok on shoulder ; value, £ 2 2s. Identifiable. SOUTH DUNEDIN.— Between the 4th and 6th instant, from a shed in Macandrew Street, the property of ANDREW KING, three large paint- brushes, value 8s. 6d. each; a new varnish- brush, large size, value 8s. 6d. One of the brushes has a twist in the handle, and another has a ring cut round the top of the handle. PROPERTY RECOVERED. —— i- ooo-:-— OHAKUNE.— CHARLES MCDONNELL'S horse has been found, and returned to the owner. The saddle is still miss- ing. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 301.) OWAKA.— ROBERT LANDRETH'S bicycle has been r « - oovered. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 58.) DESERTERS FROM HIS MAJESTY'S SERVICE. From H. M. S. " Cambrian." WELLINGTON.— Patrick J. Durham, age twenty- two, height 5ft. 5in., private R. M. L. I., native of New South Wales, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, mole on abdomen, soar on nose. Deserted 5th instant. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 68.) A reward of £ 3 will be paid for his apprehension. From H. M. S. " Pioneer." SYDNEY.— Herbert Elsmore, age thirty- four, height 5 ft. 5 in., native of Warwickshire, England, dark- brown hair, dark- brown eyes, dark complexion, crossed flags, star, and flowers on left forearm, bracelet on left wrist, anchor surrounded by crossed flags on left hand. HOBART.— Richard Stanley Burridge, age TWENTY- one, height 5ft. 8 in., seaman, native of Tasmania, black hair, grey eyes, dark complexion. A reward not exceeding £ 3 will be paid for his apprehension. MISSING. HASTINGS. — Since 26th September last, Charles Fargie, age thirty- seven, height about 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and com- plexion, hair inclined to curl, clean- shaved except ginger moustache, scar on right side of nose ; usually wears a blue coat and vest, brown trousers, and straw hat. On the above date he left Dannevirke, riding a dark- bay pony, and had with him two sheep- dogs. As nothing has been heard of him since, fears are entertained for his safety. Inquiry by his wife. NEW PLYMOUTH.— Since 24th ultimo, John Parham, age seventy ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 5 in., farmer, native of Somerset, England, thin build, fresh complexion, grey hair ( bald on top), grey beard and moustache, has no teeth, small grey eyes; walks very erect; dressed in dark- tweed' suit and hard black hat. Quiet inquiry requested by his wife, that he may be located. SUMNER.— Since about the 10th October last, Thomas Leonard Agar, age about thirty- four, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hotel waiter, native of New Zealand, stout build, dark- brown hair and moustache, dark eyes, clear com- plexion; dressed in brown suit and hard black hat; fond of drink. He has not been in good health, and fears are enter- tained for his safety. OAMARU.— Since 5th ultimo, Charles Munsey, age seventeen, height 5ft. 7in., moulder, native of New Zea- land, stout build, inclined to be bandy- legged, black hair, dark eyes ; dressed in dark suit, grey- tweed cap, and tan boots, black kerchief round his neck. Inquiry by his father, that he may be induced to return home and finish his trade as a moulder. INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY.— Stolen from an upstairs bedroom at " Sel- bourne," Allison Street and Carrington Road, Coogee, Sydney, the property of Joseph Gill, 8th or 9th instant, a gentlemen's gold hunting- watch, Nicol and Nielsen makers, number at present unknown, monogram " J. G." in raised letters on back and front cases covering whole sur- face ; a gold fob chain, consisting of five separate curb chains with sliding buckle, seal attached with photo inside ; a gen- tlemen's single- stone diamond ring, round wire shank, claw 6ctrting ; a gentlemen's signet ring, set with a flat plain bloodstone, claw setting; a ladies' five- stone diamond ring, " J. G." and probably date inside, claw setting; a ladies' gold ring, set with two diamonds and a turquoise on a slanting bar which projects over edge of ring ; a ladies' gold ring, set with two corals and a diamond in centre, stones wide apart; a ladies' gold ring, set with emeralds and diamonds, design of two shamrocks ; a long- twist gold cable bangle, frosted on one side : value, £ 150. Identifiable. ( 11/ 342.) HUNTER'S HILL ( NEW SOUTH WALES).— A warrant has been issued by the Hunter's Hill Bench for the arrest of John Cook, oharged with wife- desertion. He is twenty- five years of age, 5ft. 10 in. high, thin build, dark com- plexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on upper lip, turned- up nose ; dressed, when last seen, in a dark navy- blue sac suit, black hard hat, and black lace- up boots; a sawyer. Sup- posed to have gone either to northern rivers or New Zea- land. ( See New South Wales Police Gazette, - 1911, page 60 ) ALBURY ( NEW SOUTH WALES). — Inquiry requested for A. Dunen, that an order may be served on him to deliver up accoutrements served to him as a gunner in the artillery Description: Age twenty- three, height 5ft. 8in., weight about 10 St., 36 in. chest- measurement, light- brown hair slightly stooped shoulders. He joined Wirth's Circus, and was discharged at Timaru about the 7th January last. He and three others discharged from the cirous are supposed to be in the Canterbury District, harvesting. ( 11/ 15.)
