NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in whioh reports are required to be furnished for the compila- tion of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for whioh owners cannot be found, should be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in oharge of out- stations will forward them direct. NAPIER,— 17ch ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Napier Prison for twenty- four hours in default of paying 13s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Frank Sumberg, age fifty, height 5 ft. 9 in., sailor and labourer, native of Finland, medium build, fair hair and complexion, fair moustache only, blue eyes ; dirty appearance. BULL'S.— 13th instant, on warrant for theft of a dark- grey tweed suit, value £ 4, the property of Albert Joseph Donovan, labourer, William Robertson, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of the South Island, New Zealand, stout build, stooped shoulders, thin face, prominent cheek- bones, fair complexion and hair; will probably be wearing the stolen clothes ( which are too large for him). The complainant and offender were working together for a farmer near Bull's. PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND.— 16th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child, Leonard Richardson, age thirty - five, height 5 ft. 8 in., draper's assistant, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion and hair, black moustache, brown eyes ; dressed in navy- blue suit and black hard hat. He was formerly employed by Milne and Choyce, drapers, Auckland. He is a married man, and resided at Mount Roskill. Complainant, Mary Gledstones, Auckland. TINUI.— 29th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a bay hack gelding, aged ( fourteen years), about 15 hands high, both hind fetlocks white, has a narrow white streak on face, branded " JH " conjoined on near shoulder, nuggety build, in good condition; an English- made light saddle, stamped " Page" under flaps; an ordinary single- rein snaffle bridle and 6tirrup- leatheis; a leather girth stamped " Page" on inside ( one stirrup- iron larger than the ( other); a brown- felt numnah: total value, £ 11 10s. ( identifiable): the pro- perty of Amy Florence Page: Frank Saunders, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion and hair, thin features, clean- shaved except tandy moustache; respectable appearance; dresstd in light- tweed coat and dark- tweed trousers. He hired the horse, saddle, and bridle to go to Masterton, and offered ' them there for sale. He stated that he formerly worked for F. Tilley, horse- trainer, Fordell. WAIHI. — 16th instant, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for six months for disobeying an order of the Court to pay 6s. a week for the maintenance of his illegitimate child and failing to find two sureties in £ 25 each, John Taylor, age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7in., stableman and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, blue eyes, clean- shaved; dressed in a shabby brown suit and tweed cap. PAEROA.— 12th instant, that a subpoena may be served on him in a case of sly- grog selling, and that he may be inter- viewed regarding a lost cheque, James Butterworth ( known as Scotty), age twenty- five, height about 5 ft. 5 in., jockey and stable hand, slight build, fresh complexion, black hair, largo even teeth in front; when last seen was wearing a brown suit, bard black hat, double linen collar, brown tie, and l& dies' tan boots. GREYTOWN.— 11th instant, that a notice of fine of £ 4 14s. 8d. may be served on him for using indecent language on a railway- station, John Mitchell, age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 5| in., cook, native of England, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, brown eyes. OTAKI.— 13th instant, that a warrant of distress may be executed on him for £ 5 12s. fine and costs for supplying a Maori woman with liquor, Robert Kilminster, age about twenty- six, height about 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, very dark complexion, rather heavy dark moustaohe, rather heavy dark eyebrows which almost meet, generally wears his beard a week or more before shaving, Maori appearance, slovenly gait ; dressed in dark suit and hard black- felt hat. He has a sister, Mrs. Wallace, residing at Kilbirnie. He was in Wellington recently, and may have gone to the South Island. • 38 N E W Z E A L A N D P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. I JAN. 11 WELLINGTON.— 13th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Turakina," Thomas Gibson, James Glendinning Aitken Logan, and G. Burgoing. First, age twenty- eight, height 5ft. 6 in., A. B., native of England, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes, anchor tattooed on back of right hand. Second, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 5| in., quartermaster, native of Scot- land, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair and mous- tache, blue eyes. Third, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 3 in., econd oook, native of England, slight build, black well- waxed moustache. The last two deserted on the 14th in- stant. A reward of £ 2 each will be paid for their apprehen- sion. WELLINGTON.— 17th instant, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Elizabeth Betsy McKay, with adequate means of support, David Alexander McKay, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 9 in., ex railway ganger, native of Ireland, medium build, fair complexion and hair, light- blue eyes ; dressed in blue- serge suit and black soft hat. Com- plainant received a letter from him, dated 16/ 1/ 11, bearing the Palmerston North post- mark, containing an order from him to draw his pay from the Railway Department. He is supposed to be accompanied by Mary Neal, age twenty- nine, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, dark complexion, black hair, and carrying a child about three months old wrapped in a cream coloured shawl. Another warrant has also been issued for him that he has failed to provide adequate main- tenance for his four children. WELLINGTON.— 18th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Clan Grant," Thomas Quinn, age forty- one, height 5ft. 4 in., A. B., native of England, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, star tattooed on left hand ; is probably wearing a dungaree suit without a collar. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for his apprehension. CHRISTCHURCH.— 2nd instant, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for seven days in default of pay- ing £ 1 Os. 6d., medical expenses for treatment when charged with helpless drunkenness, Frederick Chappell, age thirty- eight, height 5 ft. 11 in., gardener, native of Victoria, medium build, fair complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, scars on left thumb, ohin, and neck ; was wearing a grey- tweed suit and a violet- coloured hat. His parents reside at Albert Park, Victoria. CHRISTCHURCH.— 10th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegi timate child, Alfred Maughty Gately, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 10 in., farm labourer, native of Australia, medium build, dark complexion and hair, small grey eyes, eyebrows meet, limps slightly when walking, Roman nose, short top lip overhanging bottom lip, heavy jaws, square face ; dressed in green- striped suit and green- felt hat. CHBISTCHURCH.— 22nd ultimo, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for twenty- four hours in default of paying 8s. fine and costs for drunkenness, John West, age fifty- two, height 5 ft. 9 in., seaman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes ; usually wears cap and blue jersey. CHRISTCHUBCH.— 26th ultimo, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for twenty- four hours in default of paying 8s. fine and costs for drunkenness, John Mc- Cann, age thirty- four, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, blue eyes. He may be found on railway- construction works, as he came from Otira. WAIMATE.— 28th November last, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Beatrice Annie Waterreus, with adequate means of support, Charles Waterreus, age thirty- two, height about 5ft. 8in., labourer, a quarter- caste Maori, rather fair complexion, black hair, brown eyes, clean- shaved, walks very erect, medium build; dressed in navy- blue suit and hard black has. He may be livicg with the Maoris. His mother resides at Hillgrove, near Hampden, and a brother at Auckland. OAMARU— 18th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Clan Grant," J. McNeilly ( alias Robert McNeilly), and P. Fryer ( alias Victor Friar). First, age thirty- one, height 5ft. 11 in., seaman, native of England, brown hair and eyes, fresh oomplexion, clean- shaved ; dressed in dark- sreen suit and cap. Seoond, age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 8 in., seaman, n itive of England, thick- set build, brown hair, clean- shaved; dressed in blue coat and vest, light- grey trousers, white shoes, and straw hat. A reward of £ 1 each is offered for their apprehension. INVERCARGILL.— 9th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, Frederick Osborne Lepine, age nineteen, height 5 fr-. 7Jin., clerk, native of New Zealand,' medium build, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, brown eyes; generally wears a blue suit, green cap, and tan boots. His parents reside at Mornington, Dunedin, his brother- in law ( J. Sin- clair) is manager for Bostock and Co., Timaru. Com- plainant, Veronica Kennelly. AUCKLAND.— Edward James Atkinson, default of fine and costs, has been arrested by Acting- Detective Issell, Auckland police, and amount paid. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 439.) AUCKLAND.— Ernest Jones, default of costs, has paid amount due to Constable McGlone, Onehunga police. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 533.) NEWTON. — Thomas Bauer, breaking and entering Warrant cancelled. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 371.) HAMILTON. — John Bolton, alias Benet Evanus Bolton, theft, has been arrested by the Sydney police, and remanded to New Zealand. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 440.) HAMILTON.— Edwin Thomas Sharp, theft, surrendered himself to Hamilton police, and was sentenced to two years probation. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 439.) TAIHAPE. — John Carmody, disorderly behaviour, has been served with a summons by Taihape police. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 459.) WANGANUI.— Peter P. Smith, failing to provide, has been arrested by Constables West and Hodgson, Roslyn police. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 253 ) WANGANUI.— William Wilson, failing to provide : It has been ascertained by Constable Connor, Wanganui police, that offender has now returned to his wife. WELLINGTON.— Michael Minogue, default of mainten- ance, has been arrested by Constable Steere, Blenheim police, on information supplied by Acting- Detective Mason, Wellington police, and remanded. Smith on Bank of New Zealand, at Auckland, No." 847287, for £ 30, and payable to A. E. Williams ; a cheque drawn by the Hokianga Dairy Company ( Limited), on Bank of New South Wales, Rawene, No. 127, for £ 5 10s. Id., payable to T.. FREEMAN'S BAY ( AUCKLAND). — 30th ultimo, JAMES GRAYDON was assaulted and robbed in St. Thomas's Churchyard of a gentlemen's open- face keyless nickel Ansonia watch, a yellow spot on dial near second- hand ; a double silver albert ( description see No. 22, fetter and three ovals) value about £ 4 ; a piece of a curb- pattern gold chain, a spring hook on one end, and a brass swivel on the other end; and between 13s. and 16s. in silver: total value, £ 5 lis. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James John- ston and a Man, name unknown. First, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 6 in., engineer, nativo of N « w Zealand, sallow complexion, light- brown hair, brown eyes, broad nose, scar on left cheek and nose, impediment in speech ( see Police Gazette, 1909, page 329). Second, age about twenty- five) height about 5 ft. 8 in., clean- shaved ; dressed in dark suit. PONSONBY.— Between the 1st November last and 16th instant, from a building, the property of JAMES BKOOKER, carpenter, three chisels ( ljin., l^ in., Jin.), a bead plane and bevel, " A. H. C." cut in handle of each; a half- round plane and a smoothing- plane, " J. B." stamped in handle of each: value, £ 1 5s. Identifiable. OHAEAWAI.— About 10th ultimo, from | a paddock, the pro- perty of SAMUEL RADOJOKOVICH, farmer, tbree all- red steers, a white steer, five spotted steers, a red heifer, and a spotted heifer, some of them branded " R 6" and some " V," some of them ear- marked with notch out of top and bottom of right ears and a notch out of bottom of left ears, others have a half- moon out of bottom of left ears ; value, £ 33. OHAEAWAI.— Between the 9th and 24th November last, from a paddock, the property of ERNEST HONECK, farmer, forty two lambs, wethers have half- circle out of bottom of right ear and triangle out of end of tip at top, the left eat has a triangle out of ear ( top side) ; the ewes have the same ear- marks on opposite ears ; ten ewes were also stolen: value, £ 30. WILLS, Wellington, a gentlemen's nearly new waterproof brown suit of motor- cyclist's overalls, coat 40 in. chest, " The Bee Bee" worked on a small label on middle £> f inside of baok, legs of pants are separate and buttoned up outside, boot- straos, a tear newly sewn on inside oE top right leg, a Dunlop outfit in pocket of coat; value, £ 3 5s. LOWTHER, New Comic Opera Company, a brown- leather bag with two inside pockets, value £ 3, containing a black- kid purse with silver mounts, a half- sovereign, two half- crowns, some small change, a flattened half penny, a gold dress- ring set with two horse- shoes and pearl, a gold ring with emerald in claw- setting, a note- book with notes of theatrical companies a number of letters, a bunch of keys, some loose keys, andtoilet requisites ; total value, £ 11. Identifiable. RAKAIA.— 11th instant, from an outhouse, the croperty of ELEANOR MARY BULLER, a double- reined English- made bridle, plated bit; value, £ 1 Is. Identifiable. Suspic on attached to a Swagger, name unknown, who offered the bridle for sale on the above date, age about twenty- five, height 5 ft. 8 in., dark complexion and hair ; dressed in blue coat, light- coloured vest and trousers ( well worn and rather dirty), and a green- tweed hat. RAKAIA.— 13th instant, from KERWIN BUCKTHOUGHT, a suit of green- coloured tweed, size about 5, tailor- made in England, value £ 3 ; a dark- grey rainproof overcoat, " Rain- proof " in red on back of the collar, value £ 1; a pair of light boots, size 6, value 5s. Suspicion attached to a Man, name unknown, a circus attendant, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 7 in., native of Canada, dark complexion and hair, clean- shaved ; supposed dressed in the stolen clothes and hard black hat. He was recently employed at Wirth's circus, and was known to the complainant as Ciril. RAKAIA.— 9th instant, from the railway- station platform the property of TIMOTHY RIORDAN, a swag, consisting of two grey blankets, about 7 ft. long, well worn ; a new grey flannel; a new dungaree jumper, size 7; a pair of heavy boots, plates on heels and toes ; a pair of grey socks: value, £ 2 10s. DUNEDIN.— 19th ultimo, from the Garrison Hall, the property of WALTER BAIRD, a gentlemen's Radium black- enamelled free- wheel bicycle, No. 105786, back- pedalling brake, rat- trap pedals, leather toe- straps ; value, £ 15. Identifiable. DUNEDIN.— 18th ultimo, from the cabin of JOHN NICOL, engineer s. s. " Corinna," a gentlemen's open- faced silver keyless watch, " J. A. N." or " J. A. Nicol, August, 1908," scratched on inside case ; value, £ 2. Identifiable. WINTON.— 30th or 31st ultimo last, from Springhills, the property of JAMES DEEGAN, farm labourer, a gentlemen's free- wheel Imperial Rover bicycle, No. F89440, celluloid mud- guards ; value, £ 9. WINTON.— 10th ultimo, from outside the Post- office, the property of FREDERICK COMER, clerk, a gentlemen's black- enamelled free- wheel bicycle, No. 9999, steel mud- guards, plain handles, front- rim brake, one grip missing ; value, £ 5. Identifiable. PROPERTY RECOVERED. PETONE.- ISABELLA WHITE and J. BUTLER'S pro- perty stolen : Arthur alias Herbert Doughty hai been ar- rested for this offence by Detective J. J. Cassells, Wellington police, and the gold granny chain, small gold heart, gold neck- chain, and gold pendant recovered and traced to of- fender's possession. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 26.) SYDNEY.— John Parker, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 4 in., seaman, native of England, dark- brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, dot on left forearm. Herbert Joseph Wheeler, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 7J in., A. B., native of Ceylon, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, scar on chin, mole on shoulder. From H. M. S. " Pyramus." On 4ili January, 1911. HOBART.— James Patrick Lyons, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 5f in., native of Ireland, black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion, scar on right kuee, cross on left forearm, heart on right forearm. Charles Henry Watkins. age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 9 in., stoker, native of South Australia, dark- brown hair, grey eyes, dark complexion. A reward not exceeding £ 3 each will be paid for their apprehension. From H. M. S. Psyche. MELBOURNE. — Frederick Arnesen, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 5f in., stoker, native of Port Chalmers, New Zealand, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, burn- s^ ar on left forearm. Deserted 27th December last. A reward not exoeeding £ 3 will be paid for his apprehension. ABSCONDING FROM INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. WANGANUI.— 29th ultimo, from lioensed service with H. J. Ritchie, farmer, Wangaehu, Hugh Wilson, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in , farm labourer, medium build, dark complexion, brown hair ; dressed in dirty grey coat and vest, blue pants; very dirty appearance. He was licensed out from the Weraroa Training Farm, and if arrested to be returned there. MISSING. GISBORNE.— Since 28th ultimo, Robert Hastie, age fifty- seven, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer and seaman, native of England, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair and beard turning grey, blue eyes; usually wears grey- tweed suit. On the above date he was the worse of liquor and intended going aboard the dredge, but has not been seen 6ince. The following descriptions have been given by people on whom the notrs have been passed: First, a Man about twenty- sev. n years or age, 5ft. 5 in. or 6 in. high, thin build, fair hair and complexion, clean- shaved, thin face ; dressed in grey- tweed suit and grey soft- felt hat; respect- able appearance. Second, Man, age about thirty- five, height 5 ft 5 in., slight build, light ginger moustache only, florid complexion, ginger hair, red nose, sharp features; dressed in light striped coat and vest, blue - serge trousers, black Romeo boots* and large brown Baden Powell hat.
