THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1911. NEW SERIES. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TIIE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2822. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended of of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotlan< l Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Pest Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepttd) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within tht United Kingdom. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows: — ( tt) All persons coming within Sections 5, 7, or 8, of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( h) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one months imprison- ment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one months imprisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Bankruptcy offences. Being found on enclosed premises. Breaking into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Burglary. Cattle stealing. Coining. Conspiracies of all descriptions. Embezzlement. Entering with intent to commit a felony. Extortion by threats. Felonious wounding. Forgery. Fraud. Frequenting. Horse stealing. Housebreaking. Importuning male persons to commit un- natural offences ( Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, par. b). Indecent assault on female, Larceny, Mental degenerates. Obtaining goods and money by false pre- tences. Possessing housebreaking tools. Procuration of women and girls. Prostitution, living on proceeds of ( Vagrancy Act 1898, Sec. 1, para. a). Receiving. Robbery. Sacrilege. Sheep stealing. Shopbreaking. Suspected person. Unlawful possession. Uttering counterfeit coin. Warehousebreaking. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been previously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or convictions if possible, also the No. published in the List of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— D Division. — Absconded from bail, charged with stealing and receiving leather and boots— GEORGE PHILLIPS, age 22, height 5 ft. IOj in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes hazel, Indian's head right wrist, snake and eagle left wrist in blue and red ink ; dress, blue serge lounge suit, dark overcoat, tie and peak cap, lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued. 2.— D Division.— For obtaining 80s. by worthless cheque, 26th ult. — HENRY CHURCHILL SIMMONDS, age about 45, height. 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stiff build, complexion ruddy, hair and moustache ( long) brown, heavy jaws; wearing black frock coat, silk hat. A printer's traveller; native of London. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division. — For stealing jeweller}- described in case No. 28, 6th inst.— ERNEST JEFFERIES ( supposed false), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes very light blue, thin face, clean shaved, high forehead, an inveterate cigarette smoker; dress, dark grey striped suit, dark overcoat with wide stripes, strap across back, blue and dark red muffler, hard felt hat, wearing 2 gold rings ( 1 lady's, chased) on second finger. He kept company with a domestic servant, obtained possession of her handbag containing key of her employer's flat, which he entered and com- mitted the larceny. 4.— P Division.— For obtaining by a worth- less cheque on the London and Provincial Bank, Ltd., Saxmundham Branch, Suffolk, 10th Decem- ber, a black cob, 13 hands, short mane and tail; a Governess car, painted green, black lines, " Brans- ley " on wheel caps; and a set of brass- mounted harness, martingale pattern, leather saddle— E. W. or M. PERRY, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft, 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, mous- tache black; dress, blue serge suit, blue Melton overcoat, velvet collar, black hard felt hat, brown leggings. Supposed a native of Suffolk. Warrant issued. 5. — T Division.— For stealing tie pins— CHARLES DUNNE, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, may be clean shaved, eyes grey; dress, blue serge suit, patent leather boots. A native of London.— ANNIE SILVER- TON, age 30, height 5 ft, 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark, one upper tooth missing, usually wears a veil. A native of Hertford. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For obtaining cheques for £ 811 12s. fid. bv false pretences— THOMAS H. COPPINGER, age about 32, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair reddish brown, moustache ginger, eves large, some front teeth missing, walks with short quick step, Lancashire accent; dress, dark clothes, hard felt hat. DEVONSHIRE. 8.— Torquay { County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences, 24th December— MICHAEL ROSE, a Jew, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion sallow, pimples on face, hair ( curly) black, slight moustache dark; dress, brown suit and cap, sometimes wears a bowler hat. A native of London. Absconded 26th December, accompanied by a Man ( not wanted), age about 32, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair ( curly) dark, clean shaved, very thick lips, bad on his feet; dress, grey suit and cap, some- times wears a hard hat and blue overcoat. They carried on a fruit and flower business here for some time. May be found hawking flowers, or take a business in another town. Rose's wife ( not wanted) left about 13^ h December, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow; wear- ing a long tight- fitting jacket and large hat, ac- companied by a girl ( Jewess), age 10, short black curly hair. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Roberts, Torquay. ISLE OF WIGHT. 15.— Newport ( County).— For stealing, 10th ult., £ 1— AMY CASS, age 23, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, full face, hair dark brown; dress, blue serge costume, dark velvet motor hat, usually wears a Salvation Army brooch. May be found at a Salvation Army Home. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Newport. tie, light tweed cap with button on top, brown boots. Stated the cheque had been sent to him for ground rent. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Eastbourne. ESSEX. 9. — Southend ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) £ 2 Is., 4th inst. ISLER, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair brown; dress, brown overcoat and trousers, cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 10.— Staple Hill ( County).— For embezzle- ment— WILLI A M DAVIS, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( rather long and inclined to curly) light brown, eyes supposed grey; dress, dark tweed jacket and breeches, cap, brown leggings. A baker; native of Staple Hill. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. 11.— Stroud ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences and stealing a lady's neck chain, gold colour, gold chased cross and gold rimmed pendant, containing photograph of a young man one side and a bull dog the other, attached; 1 dark reddish mixture overcoat, 1 in. squares— A MAN, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes sunken; dress, dark suit, and cap, black tie, brown shoes. Stated he had ob- tained employment at a local cabinet works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Bournemouth ( County)— For stealing, 29th December, a lady's old fashioned gold lever watch, No. 29847, chased back, gold colour dial, long gold chain attached— A MAN, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. 4 to 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes brown, speaks broken English; dress, dark suit, black overcoat, bowler hat, brown boots. A German waiter. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 13. — Gosport ( County). — For leaving his wife chargeable to the Alverstoke Union— WIL- LIAM HENRY TALBOT, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair black, moustache sandy, eyes blue, fleshy lump left side of forehead; dress, navy blue suit, blue cap and overcoat, grey Army shirt, lace boots. A native of Gosport. Served 13 years in the Royal Garrison Artillery. During the past 7 years he was employed as a saddler at the Royal Gun Wharf, Portsmouth. Absconded 19th November, 1910. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cottle, Portsmouth. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 14.— Stanyround ( County).— For obtaining a mare, by a worthless cheque, 17th ult.— OLIVER WISEMAN, alias CLARENCE CHRISTIE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, small moustache light, one or two moles one side of face, of good address; wearing dark overcoat, tight- fitting back, black hard felt hat. Appearance of a well- to do tradesman. Had in his possession a cheque book issued by the Mercantile Bank of London, Ltd., also several cards and memoranda bearing " Oliver Wiseman, Oil and Colour Im- porter, 10, Liverpool Road, Islington." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wilson, Stanground, Peter- borough. LANCASHIRE. 16. — Liverpool ( City). — For stealing ( by trick), 30th ult., 2 dressing cases ( 1 plain solid leather, lined brown polished leather, 27 in. by 18 in. by 8 in., contents mounted with silver and ivory; 1 dark reddish brown crocodile, lined dark green polished leather, ends lift out with fittings, 27 in. by 18 in. by 8J in., contents mounted with silver and ivorv, and stamped " John Bagshaw & Sons, Liverpool")— CHARLES REED ( supposed false), age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, eyes wide apart, hair and straggling moustache very light, of good address; dress, dark suit and overcoat with astrachan collar, black hard felt hat, fawn colour spats. He takes a room in a fashionable neighbourhood, calls at first- class shops, asks for goods to be sent cn approval, on arrival of goods he informs the messenger that they are not suitable and induces him to leave them while he returns to the shop for others, as soon as the messenger leaves he absconds with the articles. 17 — Liverpool ( City).- For stealing £ i 18s. from her lodgings, 7th October, 1910— MARY ALICE WILSON, alias PHYLLIS WARD, age 24, good build, uses powder on face, hair light; dress, plum colour costume, pleated skirt, velvet hat trimmed pheasant feather, bee- hive shape and pleated all round, slate colour motor veil, brown kid gloves, shoes. She falsely represents herself to be the wife of a comedian. May be found in company of theatricals or prostitutes. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 18.— Manchester ( City).— TOT failing to report change of address— Licence- Holder FRED ERICK JONES, Office No. 1013- 02, age 52, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( thin on top), eyes grey, 3 hairy moles under right jaw, mole under right eyebrow, 2 small moles left side of forehead, 4 moles left cheek, abscess scar under left jaw, crooked nose. A labourer; native of Bristol. Sentenced to 3 years penal servitude at Manchester City Quarter Sessions, 22nd July, 1908, for warehousebreaking. Licensed 27th October, 1910. X. e. i. 30. 19. - Manchester ( City).— For failing to notify change of address— Licence- Holder JOHN BROWN, alias OXFORD, REILLY, MAR SHALL, ROBINSON, SMITH and MARS- LAND, Office No. 1534- 02, age 28, height 5 ft. 9J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar both eyebrows, 2 top of head, 2 left side of mouth, 2 left side of forehead, " O. M. U." and star back right hand, ring on 2nd and 4th right fin- gers, " X" back of left hand, blue dot 4th finger, and scar web of left thumb. A native of Man- chester. Sentenced to 3 years penal servitude at Leeds Sessions, 13th April, 1908, for larceny. Licensed 21st July, 1910. i. 245. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 5 TA FF ORDSHIREm IiO.— Wednesbury ( County).— For stealing £ 1 15s. ( in conjunction with Naomi Lovell, George Clayton and William Davies, remanded on bail till 17th inst.) at Tipton, 5th inst.— CHARLOTTE MARSHALL, alias DAVIES, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, plump round face, hair light brown, eyes grey, of gipsy ap- pearance ; wearing long dark brown striped coat, close fitting, brown fur hat, earrings size of a sixpence, and a number of rings. They travel the country, hawk mats, rugs, etc., call upon publicans and shopkeepers, to whom they repre- sent £ 10 is to be spent, then request them to purchase a ring for £ 2, which is only worth 4s. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. WARWICKSHIRE. 22.— Solihull ( County).— For embezzling £ 45 — THOMAS ELGIE, age 40, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes dark blue, wart on left eyelid, blue mark across bridge of nose; dress, fawn colour mackintosh, dark grey jacket with green stripes, dark green woollen fancy vest, brown knickers, dark grey stockings, red band on top, fawn colour soft felt hat, lace boots. A native of Durham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carbis, Solihull. WILTSHIRE. 23.— Salisbury ( County).— For failing to surrender to bis bail at Quarter Sessions, 3rd inst., charged with larceny— FRED LEGG, alias WIL- LI A M CHARLES ROBERTS and WILLIAM EDWARD ROBERTS, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 to in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes grey, subject to fits; dress, light grey coat, vest and cap, broad ribbed cord trousers and gaiters, blue muffler, heavy nailed boots. A labourer. Pre- viously convicted at Dorchester, Wells, War- minster, Devizes and Cerne Abbas. May be ac- companied by his Wife, age 27 to 30, left eye missing, and a baby, 4 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Collins, County Police, Salisbury. 24.— Warminster ( County).— For stealing a camera tripod and box of negatives, 15th Decem- ber, at Westbury— THOMAS WARD SPAREY, alias HERBERT DREW, age 35, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes ( small) hazel, cut scars left side back of head, bridge of nose, left top of forehead, white scar right side of neck, burn scar centre of throat, bullet mark left thigh; dress, black jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, shabby grey overcoat, light green cap, brown boots. A fireman; native of Exeter. Previously convicted at Exeter, Barry Dock, Cardiff, Glamorgan and Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lane, Warminster. SUSSEX ( East). 21.— Eastbourne borough).— For obtaining £ 2 14s. 3d., 31st ult., by a worthless cheque for £ 3 4s. 5d. on plain paper on the London, County & Westminster Bank, Hanover Square, London, W., purporting to be drawn in favour of S. G. Pin- nington by R. Cordner Martin— S. G. PINNING- TON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., good build, complexion fresh, full face, hair inclined to ginger, moustache light; dress, brown suit, red YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 25.— Hull ( City).— For obtaining £ 7 14s. and 2 pairs of boots by a worthless cheque— EDWARD ST. JOHN, M. M. B., age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, rather prominent nose, rather high cheek bones, hair light, clean shaved; dress, light grey suit, heavy greenish overcoat, belt at back, tan colour boots. Stated he was bandmaster of the 9th Lancers, ordered the boots, and tendered in payment a cheque, No. 27599, for £ 8 17s. on Farrow's Bank, Ltd., No. 5, Stoke Road, Gosport, payable to Bandmaster E. St. John, and signed James Melcon, and received the balance of £ 7 14s.; the cheque was returned, marked " No account." On 22nd December he called at the Hull Savings Bank, presented a cheque on the Northern Banking Co., Ltd., Holywood, for £ 200, made payable to E. St. John, signed S. Synge, stated he wished to open an account by depositing the cheque, and attempted to obtain a few pounds. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 26. — Dewsbury ( County). — For stealing £ 11, at Ossett, 9th inst.— NORMAN HUDSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair and slight moustache black; dress, dark suit, hard hat, lace boots. A native of Leeds. May en- deavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Marshall, County Police, Dewsbury. 27 — Doncaster ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences at Bentlev, 20th December, 1910— GEORGE MANTON, age 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, lump under left ear, smaller lump back of right wrist, nose inclined to one side, appearance of having been broken; dress, blue pilot jacket and vest, black cardigan jacket, cord trousers, black and white check scarf, dark cap, heavy boots. FIFESHIRE. 28.— Cupar ( County).— For embezzling £ 500 — NORMAN GRAHAM ROBERTSON ( the portrait was taken a considerable number of years ago, he is now much thinner in the face and may be wearing a moustache), age 31, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, full round face, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue, walks smartly, always with left hand in jacket or over- coat pocket, and his head droops about 2 in. to left side every other step he takes; dress, light grey tweed jacket suit, heavy long dark grey over- coat, strap or belt at back, hard felt hat. A stockbroker, late of Kirkcaldy. May endeavour to leave the country and probably join his brother, David Robertson, wanted for embezzlement ( see Case No. 30, 9th December, 1910). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Fifeshire, Cupar. SUSSEX ( East). 30.— Hove ( Borough,).— For stealing, 4th inst.. a lady's gold open face keyless watch, white dial, makers, " Barraud & Lund," also monogram " D. J." on back, had attached 1 small gold safety pin brooch; 1 small plain gold bracelet, \ of an in. in width, ribbed pattern, had a small bog oak lady's umbrella, bone handle, with 2 gold bands on stick; 1 electric pocket lamp with leather cas- ing; 1 thick black serge or frieze coat and 6kirt, had black velvet collar and cuffs, trimmed silver braid, coat lined with violet coloured silk; 1 small green crocodile skin bag with one pocket outside pig ( one leg broken) attached; 1 gold curb chain bracelet, padlock fastening; 1 very narrow thin plain gold bracelet, set with cameo at fastening; 1 bracelet, consisting of plaited elephant's hair, with gold mounts; 1 18 ct. gold neck chain, plain links, had attached a gold rim pendant, with 2 photographs of a gentleman ( one coloured); 1 — LILY STREET, Office No. 2031/ 1910, age 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, burn scar on right wrist. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 31— Bradford ( County).— For obtaining £ 8 by false pretences at Shipley, in December— shape of a man's straw hat, usually carries green leather purse. Visits London, Manchester, and CLARA PLATT, age 36, height 5 ft. 11 in., good Barrow- in- Furness, also fond of visiting places of build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes | amusement.
