POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2796. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted ait a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6j. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension ur recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tue » day edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) wilt be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. ^ THE EDITOR, New Scotland I ard, London, S. SPECIAL ATTENTION is called to A MAN, age 19 or 20, slight build, pale face, dark hair; well dressed, speaks French with a foreign accent, describing him- self as the son of Esper Efl'endi Shoucair, 1st Drago- man of His Majesty's Consulate General at Beyrout. This man has been endeavouring to obtain money by false pretences from various Diplomatic and Con- sular Officers in France and Belgium. He pretends he is expecting money from home and begs assistance until such time as he may be able to communicate with his relations. It is now believed that he is in this country and may endeavour to pursue the fraud here. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A native of Dublin. Is accompanied by her son, age 5. Warrant issued? 2. — D Division. — For obtaining a gold ring, chased at sides, " R. L." in centre, and £ 1 13s., by false pretences ( bogus employment agency)— E. HOVIS, alias ERNEST HOBISCH, an Austrian, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., good build, complexion fresh, full face, heavy jaws, hair brown, clean shaved, swinging gait; dress, dark brown double breasted jacket suit, round grey cap or black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. t S.— N Division.— For embezzling £ 12 10s. — CHARLES ROGERS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes ( supposed) grey, subjected to abscesses on neck, frowns when in conversation ; dress, blue serge suit, dark cap. Supposed a native of Birmingham. 4. — P Division. — For causing grievous bodily harm to Police— NAT STAIN FIELD, age 80, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown ; dress, dark mixture jacket suit and cap, light waterproof mackintosh. A wardrobe dealer; native of Peckham. May be found at Margate. Warrant issued. 5.—^ Division.— For stealing ( servant) a motor car— CARYL BERRY STORRS, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( curly) and eyes dark, clean shaved, broken nose. A chauffeur ; native of London ; licence No. 23348. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division.— For obtaining £ 80, and a gold ring by false pretences— GEORGE HAROLD HAMMOND, alias WILLIAMS, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., good build, complexion, hair ( cut short, turning grey) and eyes dark, scar bridge of nose and back of head, walks erect; dress, brown mixture Norfolk suit, fawn colour cap, brown leggings and boots. BERKSHIRE. 7 — W an tag e ( County).— For stealing 10th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— GEORGE BARNES, age 38, heignt 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion and eyes dark, hair black; dress, blue serge suit, dark cap. Has served in the Wilts Regiment. A native of Sevenhampton, Wilts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gibbs, Wantage. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque, 12th ult.— G. C. GIFFORD HODGE, alias GIRON HODGE, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion very pale, slight moustache dark, bad front teeth, very long thin hands, of good address; dress, light tweed suit, believed wearing green felt hat, light check overcoat, and chamois leather gloves. He stayed at an hotel from 7th to 12th September, 1910, and styled himself Capt. the Hon. G. C. Gifford Hodge, 4th Hussars ( false), and left without paying his bill. He made the acquaintance of a young lady here, whom he persuaded to cash a cheque, No. Q116984, Parr's Bank, Colchester Branch, which is one of a book stolen by him at Colchester, and is believed to have a number of similar cheques in his possession. Is identical with Gifford Hodge, wanted at Stroud for a similar offence, and may be found at first- class hotels, or at jobmasters' yards applying for the hire of traps, or applying for medical treatment, as he is suffering from venereal disease. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 9. — Windsor ( Borough). — LOUISA R, DOWNES, Office No. S- 64836, Case No. 9, 23rd ult.. not now wanted, having been found not to be identical with Mrs. BOAKES, wanted here on warrant for fraud, and described in Case No. 8, 16th ult. BUCKING HA MS HI RE. 10.— Chesham ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst., a gold bracelet, very thin, safety chain attached, push fastening, dented on top; 1 do., half engraved, with buckle, dented on top; 1 lady's gold ring, set 5 opals, " E. R." scratched inside; 1 do., set 3 pearls; 1 gold heart- shaped pendant, set with sapphire; 1 gold wishbone brooch; 1 small pearl necklace; 1 lady's small gun- metal watch, several scratches on dial— HARRY ROBERTS, alias CROWSON, SELBY, RODWELL and ROBINSON, Office No. 1171- 09 ( Case No. 14, 9th September, 1910), age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued).— hair light brown, clean shaved, narrow jaw, splay feet, very bad teeth; dress, grey mixture or blue serge jacket suit, brown boots, carrying brown rain- proof overcoat. CARNARVONSHIRE. 11.— Bangor ( County).— For leaving his wife chargeable to the Bangor and Beaumaris Union — ROBERT JONES, age 46, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair dark brown, mous- tache light, eyes blue, scar bridge of nose, part of one finger missing. A stone mason; native of Menai Bridge. Warrant issued. 12.— Bangor ( County).— For non- payment of £ 1 17s. 6d. maintenance arrears- OWEN OWENS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light brown, eyes blue, addicted to drink. A mason's labourer; native of Bangor. Warrant issued. 13.— Bangor ( County^.— For assault— OWEN RICHARD JONES, age 24, height 5 ft. 10J in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and slight mous- tache brown. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 14.— Liscard ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 5s.— ANNIE HENDERSON, age 18, height 5 ft., good build, complexion fresh, hair ( worn down back) dark ; dress, cream colour silk blouse, dark plaid skirt, large dark green coat with light green stripes, white Peter Pan collar and cufl's, bright red Tam o'Shanter, shoes. Supposed a native of Keighley, Yorks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McHale, Liscard. 15.— Middlewich ( County). — For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Congleton Union, 9th ult.— JOHN LOWE, age 85, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and slight moustache light, eyes blue ; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown cord trousers ( narrow ribbed), blue and white spotted muffler, green cap. A chemical works labourer ; native of Elton, Cheshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thompson, Middlewich. 16.— North wich ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Northwich Union, 7th inst.— JAMES CORK, age about 45, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ( heavy) dark, eyes blue; dress, dark suit, square cut jacket, hard felt hat, blue tie, light lace boots. A rock miner or labourer. Absconded 7th inst., and booked to Liverpool. Accompanied by his daughter, age 5, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes very dark; dress, black or red frock, brown jacket and hat, clogs with straps across fronts. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the Guardians of the Northwich Union for the arrest of Cork. Information to Supt. Cooper, Northwich. DERBYSHIRE. 17. — Buxton l County). — For stealing, 6th inst., a long blue coat with buttons at back ; 1 plain brown dress skirt and £ 9— NELLIE BROWN, age 15, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes brown ; dress, blue or black coat, black short skirt, brown felt hat, trimmed black lace and forget- me- nots, lace boots, wore a leather wristlet with gunmetal watch. Had with her a dress basket. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Buxton. 18. — Renishaw ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, at Eckington, 1st inst.— A MAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes dark; dress, black morning coat, dark breeches, brown gaiters ( sometimes wears fancy stockings), red tie, gold guard, gold ring on left little finger. He calls at houses, represents that he is taking photo- graphs for a company, obtains payment, but fails to send photographs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 19.— Exeter ( City).— For stealing during 1909, a large quantity of ornamental brass vases and tubes, engineers' and other tools, also brass and copper material— JOHN SUTTON, age about 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, prominent chin, mole one T H E POLICE GAZETTE. cheek, droops one shoulder, rather bow- legged. An electrical wireman; native of London. He left Exeter July, 1909; a portmanteau and 3 wooden boxes were consigned from Exeter to Epsom on 8rd July, 1909. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Exeter. 20 — Barnstaple ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false ' pretences — F. MYERS ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, sharp features, hair brown, slight moustache dark, Roman nose, scar under left eye, when speaking pro- nounces " R " as " W "; dress, brown suit with green stripes, grey cap. He took lodgings, 22nd August last, advertised. in the Northern Daily Telegraph 200 black leghorn pullets for sale, received orders with postal orders for various amounts, and absconded 29th August. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Barnstaple. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1910. ESSEX. 21.— Chelmsford ( County).— For obtaining £ 28 16s. 6d. by a worthless cheque, 27th ult.— CHARLES HOLMES, alias WATTS, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., corpulent, complexion fresh, hair grey, badly ruptured; d ress, dark suit and overcoat, bowler hat. A betting man ; follows race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 22.— Southend ( County).— For stealing a lady's 18 ct. gold keeper ring, chased ivy leaves — WILLIAM MUNDY, alias REES and GREEN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, dimpled cheeks, hair ( curly at sides) light brown ; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, brownish trousers, soft blue collar with safety pin, green tie and cap, brown button boots, sometimes wears a blue and white muffler. A clerk ; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 23 — Coleford ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a mare ( recovered)— HENRY GRANT, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes light blue, slight ginger moustache; dress, green woollen suit and soft felt hat, brown boots. A low horse dealer, may be found attending fairs; native of Adderbury, Oxford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffin, Coleford. 24. — Staple Hill ( County). — For stealing ( with Edward Charles Golding, in custody) from a shop at Hanham, 80th ult., a tin cash box containing about £ 3— ALBERT JAMES GOLDING, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown ; dress, blue suit, dark muffler and cap — ALFRED SAMUEL GOLDING, age 18, height 5 ft. ^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown; dress, light suit, cap, brown canvas shoes with rubber heels. Natives of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Alton ( County).— For stealing ( servant) £ 1 10s. at Grayshott, 3rd inst.—' WALTER TIG- WELL, age 24| height 4 ft. 10£ in., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, white muffler, dark cap, light lace boots. Has been employed delivering coal. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 26.— Gosport ( County).— For non- payment of £ 5 2s. maintenance arrears and costs— LEWIS GIBSON, age 34, height 5ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, supposed heavy dark moustache, eyes grey. An engineer artificer; native of Southampton. Has served in the navy. May be found employed in shipbuilding yards. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 27.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing at Fort Rowner, Sth inst., a free wheel bicycle, " Mead Liverpool," and " Sun " on front plate, usual parts plated, 2 lever brakes, front one broken off. 28£ in rims, painted black. East Anglian front tyre, Palmer back, Brampton Standard marked hub both wheels Brampton saddle and chain, rat trap pedals, small bell and tool bag, new mudguards, new bright stays, light blue handle grips. " No. 433263 " stamped on ends of both, maker Villers, acetylene lamp " No. 318," attached ; 1 dark jacket with squares, " Hart and Co. Gosport," marked inside; 1 blown leather handbag, initials " C. H." thereon- HENRY SMITH, age 24^, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes blue, clasped hands and indistinct marks left forearm, hand holding snake and dagger through heart right forearm, acne on trunk. Supposed wearing the stolen clothing and dark cap, stated he was a native of Windsor. Is an absentee from the Royal Garrison Artillery. He enlisted at Cheltenham 23rd ult. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 28.— Gosport ( CountyI.— Particulars referring to FRANK RAYNER CHAMBERS, Case No. 23, 20th May last, cancelled. VS.— Portsmouth ( Borottgh).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 30th ult.— A MAN, age 50 to 56, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., good build, complexion fair, hair, moustache and close cropped beard grey, walks erect ; dress, blue navy serge double- breasted jacket, blue serge trousers, peak cap, black and white or blue and white neckerchief. Appearance of a captain of a trading vessel. Stated he was captain of a schooner laden with coal, and obtained money for the purpose of advertising the sale of same. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. KENT. 30. — Sittingbourne ( County). — For obtaining by false pretences, 5 pairs of scissors; 1 knife ; 6 sailmakers' needles and quantity of twine — JOHN BROWN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion and hair dark, short sighted, wears glasses; dress, light suit, cap, a native of Gravesend, He calls upon farmers for employment to make or repair stackcloths. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crowhurst, Sittingbourne. SI.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 8th inst., 3 umbrellas, 1 ( not recovered) black silk in good condition, silver mount, " I. L. S. from C. L.' s Brigade" thereon — Licence - holder DANIEL SMITH, alias MANT, MINTER, and MINTY, Office No. 3,604- 96, Tabular Form, 7th inst., age 45, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion swarthy, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, 2 scars right eyebrow and one bridge of nose, flower and leaf right forearm; dress, brown jacket, cord trousers, skull cap, coloured muffler. May be accompanied by a woman, age 51, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, black jacket, dark skirt, white apron, black hat, trimmed black ribbon, hob- nailed boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Canter- bury. 32. — Maidstone ( Borough). — For stealing £ 19 2s. 2d.— HENRY DAVENPORT, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, turning grey, eyes grey, thin face, tattooed cross flags, flower and bracelet, left, coat of arms, sailor, etc., right forearm; dress, dark green striped suit and cap, green knitted tie, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. LANCASHIRE. - 33.— Bury ( County).— For stealing at Heywood between 7th and 24th ult., by menaces, a lady's 9- ct. gold keeper ring, chased, leaf and flower pattern; 1 do. dress ring, curb pattern; 1 9- ct. gold curb bangle, padlock attached, with initials " S. A. A." thereon; 2 lady's 9- ct. gold dress rings, chased, imitation curb pattern ( 1 smaller than other); 1 gold locket, oval, engraved, opens at side, gold neck chain, small link pattern, at- tached; 1 18- ct. gold wedding ring; 1 lady's 9- ct. gold keeper ring, chased, rather broad and flat, and £ 66— — EPPONSTALL, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair light; dress, large red shawl, skirt. — SMITH, age 25 or 26, height about 5 ft., slight build, hair black; dress, black skirt and shawl. Gipsies, travel the country with vans and carts, and go from house to house selling lace. One of the women called at a house at Heywood, pretended to tell a woman her fortune, and obtained the jewellery. On subsequent dates other visits were made, and by using threats, ob- tained the money. Smith travels with an oval- topped van, generally drawn by a large brown horse; also a Hartlepool cart. Epponstall has a square van, painted red, gilt at corners, brass hubs on wheels. Drawn by a brown and white piebald horse; also a dog cart, 2 wheels, iron tyres. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Pickering, Bury. 34.— Wig an ( County).— For stealing a quantity of copper recovered)— A MAN, age 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair ( turning grey) and moustache ( rather large) dark brown ; dress, dark jacket suit, cap, lace boots.
