All communications JOT insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted ait a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than moon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be repaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the ' mted Kingdom. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows: — ( a) All persons coming within Sections 5, 7, or 8, of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one months imprison- ment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one months imprisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been previously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or convictions if possible, also the No. published in the List of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. VS.— Cambridge ( County)— For stealing £ 10, 30th ult., at Madingley— JOSEPH GARDNER, age 28, height 5 ft. 1 in., hair brown, clean shaved, thin face, large nose slightly bent, white scar down bridge; dress, dark grey stable suit and cap, green tie. A groom; native of Ware. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Castle Hill, Cambridge. 14 — Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st ult., a roadster bicycle, " Invicta" transfer on down tube and head, green enamelled, lined gold, " Simplex " 3- speed gear, " Reflex " Clipper tyres, rat trap pedals, roller lever brakes, raised handle bars, tip off left grip— —. SANDERSON, alias F. BOXALL, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and stubby moustache dark, full face, may now be clean shaved; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light green stripes or plaid trousers, white rubber collar, green tie, lace boots. From 16th to 21st ult. he stayed at a common lodging house. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. he stated he came from Ilfracombe, and hired a' n at a fashionable boarding establishment, leaving, 24th ult., without settling his account. He also obtained a very thick double- breasted greenish cloth overcoat, \ yith black wave lines, and on being asked for payment, promised a cheque and further orders. Coat may be found pledged. He is supposed to have very little money, and may be found at some seaside resort. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Roberts, Torquay. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Reading Vliorougn,).— For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque, 12th ult.— G. C. G1FJ? ORD HODGE, alias GiUON HODGE, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion very pale, slight moustache dark, bad front, teeth, very long thin hands, of good address; dress, light tweed suit, believed wearing green felt hat, light check overcoat, and chamois leather gloves. ± le stayed at an hotel from 7th to l2th September, 1910, and 1 styled himself Capt. the lion. G. C. Gilford Hodge, 4th Hussars ( false), and left without paying his bill. He made the acquaintance of a young lady here, whom he persuaded to cash a cheque, Wo. Q116984, Parr's Bank, Colchester Branch, which is one of a book stolen by him at Colchester, and is believed to have a number of similar cheques in ! his possession. Is identical with Gilford Hodge, i wanted at Stroud for a similar offence, and may t CHESHIRE. 15.— Crewe ( County).— For night poaching at Haslington— EDWARD SMART, age 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, supposed to have recent scar on head; dress, usually dark clothes, muffler, cap. Native of Crewe. Warrant issued. 16.— Crewe ( County).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences— JAMES WILLIAM ARM- STRONG ( supposed false), age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair reddish brown, inclined to curly, eyes blue; dress, blue serge suit, brown or greenish colour cap, iight green tie. He represented himself to be an agent for the Prudential Assurance Co., and obtained the money by stating a £ 10 bonus would be given. Supposed identical with MAN, Case No. 4, 5th August. Pearson, Crewe. 17.— Liscard ( County).-— For loitering with DORSETSHIRE. 21 — Beaminster ( County).— For stealing a milk can and milk, at Lyme Regis, 9th ult.— JOSEPH EDWARD WOOD, age 16, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald patch back of head) light brown, eyes blue; dress, black vest, brown cord breeches, heavy boots. Was employed delivering milk. Absconded 9th ult. Warrant issued. 22.— Beaminster ( County). — For office breaking and stealing money at Lyme Regis, 28th ult.— CHARLES PAUL, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, large growth left side of bottom lip; dress, brown suit, red tie, carried an overcoat. A labourer, sometimes works as a mason; native of Beaminster; last heard of near Taunton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Beaminster. ESSEX. 23.— Southend ( County).— For stealing an 18- ct. gold signet ring, plain heart shield, small scratch on heart, between 29th ult. and 2nd inst.— FREDERICK MERRY, age about 38, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, long thin face, hair light brown, quiet manner, several front upper teeth supposed missing; dress, short dark jacket, lavender colour trousers, cream colour knitted tie, blue serge cap, lace boots. A baker; believed a native of Westgate- on- Sea, where he was employed for years prior to 22nd ult. as a foreman baker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. be found at first- class hotels, or at jobmasters [ intent to commit a felony— A MAN, age 23 to 25, yards applying for the hire of traps, or applying lor medical treatment, as he is suffering Irom venereal disease. WIL- SON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and rather heavy moustache light; dress, navy blue suit, green tie, white straw hat ( damaged round rim), with black band, lace boots. He called upon a shopkeeper and represented he was an agent for a firm of accountants, Chancery Lane, London, and was given money for the pur- pose of taking out judgment summonses, which he failed to do. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 11.— Windsor ( Borough).— For attempting to obtain £ 20 by a fictitious cheque, 21st ult., and with obtaining goods by false pretences— THOMAS WATT, alias CRAIG, WAUGH, JENNINGS, WATSON, WATT, JOHN SEYMOUR, HEP- PELL, WATTS, KENNEDY, etc., Office No. 203- 04, Cases No. 3, 15th July, 12, 6th May, and 35, 22nd April, 1910 ( ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, No. 81, Figure 34), age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, bad on feet, and leans forward very much when walking; dress, light grey suit, light fancy vest, appearance of an ex- jockey or jockey's valet. He engaged rooms, stating he was valet to Mr. L. Rothschild, and ordered dinner for himself and four friends, who he said were coming later, then presented a cheque for £ 20 on Lloyd's Bank, Leamington, signed " Leonard De Rothschild," and endorsed " H. Watts." The person to whom the cheque was presented being suspicious, delayed cashing it, and in the meantime Watts decamped, and is probably now following race meetings. Warrant issued. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 12. — Great Mar low ( County).— For steal- ing from his lodgings, between 13th and 14th ult., a gold horseshoe pin; 1 pocket knife, ivory handle, and Is. 6d.— FRED NEALE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark mixture jacket, dark grey trousers, navy blue cap, lace boots. A tramping upholsterer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, High Wycombe. height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, slight moustache light brown; dress, dark suit, brown cap. Was accompanied by THOMAS CLARKE, alias WTELCH, Office No. 1781- 09 ( now in custody). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McIIale, Liscard. DERBYSHIRE. 18.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing a pair of lace boots, size 8, from his lodgings, 25th ult.— JOHN ALEXANDER SHEPHERD, Office No. 2634- 01, age 37, height 5 ft. in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey ( squints very noticeably), birthmark left eyebrow; dress, dark clothes and probably stolen boots. Has been previously convicted at Wake- field, Leeds, Morley, Bradford and Dewsbury. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 19.— Exeter ( County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences, 3rd ult.— A. COLLINS, a gipsy, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, plausible manner; dress, brown tweed suit and cap. A horse dealer. Travels with two 4- wheeled vans, " A. Collins, Forest Gate, Essex," on one, " Marshall, Oxford," on other; a 2- wheeled box trap, " James Marshall " thereon; 4 horses ( 3 bay, 1 grey), a chestnut colt, dog and 1 or 2 bicycles. Hawks rugs, etc. Accompanied by his wife, tall, stout build, two sons, two women, age 16 to 24, two girls, 9 and 7, a boy, age 5, and a baby. All well dressed. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. 20.— Tort/ Uay ( County).— For obtaining credit to the value of £ 3 15s. by fraud, 19th ult.— Licence- holder CHARLES PEARSON, alias GEORGE HENRY GRIST, ALWYN E. BANKS, CHARLES FELLOWS, AUSTIN COATS, HAMERTON, HAMILTON, & c., Office No. 1569- 01 ( ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR NO. 96, Figure 11), age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., compelxion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, mous- tache auburn, eyes blue, left thumb deformed with scars; dress, grey suit, black stripes, light brown shoes, often wears a dark red striped vest and sometimes a blue serge suit, green hat, bow in front. Has in his possession a brown leather portmanteau. On arrival at Torquay, 17th ult., GLAMORGA N SHIRE. 24.— Treharris ( County).— For obtaining boots to the value of £ 20 4s. 5d., by false pre- tences— HARRY GREEN, a Jew, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly around ears), slight moustache and eyes dark; dress, brown suit, light cap, light lace boots. A painter. Had with him a bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gill, Treharris. 25.— Cardiff ( City). - For obtaining £ 3 10s. by a worthless cheque— CHARLES STURT, age 39, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, moustache, eyes bluish grey, London accent, stoops slightly, wears a truss; dress, serge coat and vest, tweed trousers and cap, light lace boots. An engineer; native of London. Sen- tenced at Shropshire Quarter Sessions, 4th January last, to 6 months imprisonment for a similar fraud. Is said to have owned several barges trading on the Thames. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 26.— Stroud ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 by fictitious cheque, No. Q 1166993, drawn on Parr's Bank, Ltd., Colchester Branch, signed " S. L. Gifford Hodge," 27th ult.— GIFFORD HODGE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache black; dress, light grey lounge suit with green stripes, red tie, light tweed cap, long light fawn colour overcoat, brown boots, carried a short silver- headed cane. Stated he was a Captain of the 4th Hussars, and had just finished manoeuvres. Is also wanted at Reading. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. 27 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 1st or 2nd inst., £ 9 4s.— EDWARD VARNUM, alias YANK, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion very swarthy, hair and moustache black ( tinged grey), eyes sunken, dis- coloured teeth, leans to the right when walking, name and marks tattooed on arms; dress, blue serge suit, green striped cap, black tie, purple spots, new lace boots, " Stead & Simpson " on tabs. A ship's fireman or donkeyman. Absconded 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1910. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. BRECONSHIRE. 28. Brecon ( County).— For an oflence under the Criminal Law Amendment Act— JAMES A. BURGOYNE, age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey, thin on top) and moustache brown, right foot flat, slightly lame, upper teeth artificial ( one or two may be broken), a heavy smoker; dress, dark brown or grey tweed Norfolk coat and vest, knickerbockers, cycling stockings, white straw hat, lace boots. A music teacher and organist. Has resided at Leeds and Leyburn, Yorkshire. Had with him a bicycle. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Flye, Brecon. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). VS.— Tad caster ( County>.— For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 19th August last, a pony, cart and harness ( recovered)— SAMUEL SMITH, alias WHITE and WILLIAMS, Office No. 2720- 99, Tabular Form 15th July, 1910 ( ILLUS- TRATED CIRCULAR NO. 97, Figure 24), age 47, height 5 ft. in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, speaks slowly; dress, dark grey mixture suit, dark cap, wearing a silver watch guard. A horse dealer; native of Goole. Had in his possession a cheque book on Lloyd's Bank, Ltd., Lambton's Branch, Newcastle- on- Tyne, and the cheque used in the commission of the offence was one from this book. Warrant issued. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)— HER TFORDSHIRE. 30.— Hertford ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult., a watch and chain ( recovered)— WILLIAM MATTHEW LOMATH, age 29, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, " Love " left forearm, 2 dots right forearm.
