T H E POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 22, 1010. VOL. XXVII., No. 2772. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted u, t a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in fi. rce against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate depuiy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an offrccr of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8 Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Posi Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the L'mted Kingdom. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police, the Photographs and de- scriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. y.:— Steal- ing £ 1,000 from bank; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. BERKSHIRE. 2.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 14th, 15th, and 16th inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft 9 or 10 in., inclined to stout build, rather round face, hair very dark; dress, blue jacket and trousers, light fawn colour vest, bowler hat. Ap- pearance of a man servant. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. CHESHIRE. 3.— Crewe { County).— For abandoning his two children, 28th ult., and for non payment of Industrial School arrears — JAMES BUTTER- WORTH, age 42, height 5 ft. 6i in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes grey. A builder's labourer; native of Crewe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 4.— Hazel Grove ( County^.— For stealing £ 3 10s., at Romiley, 13th inst.- A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair and heavy moustache brown, Scotch or Irish accent; dress, blue jacket, brown check vest, grey trousers, lignt muffler, black hard felt hat, brown shoes. Was employed on a local farm about 10 days. Stated he had been to Canada. Represented that he was a dealer in old china. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. CUMBERLAND. 5.— Cocker mouth ( County).— For steal- ing, 7th inst., a cheque for £ 5 ( recovered); a £ 5 Bank of England note; 1 pair of strong lace boots, broad nails around sides, heel and toe plates — . TAMES ENTW1STLE, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 or S in., complexion fresh, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, green mixture tweed jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, large woollen check neckerchief, light cap with large peak. Supposed a native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Illingworth, Cockermouth. DERBYSHIRE. 6.— Buxton ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a black coat and a white collar and front, at Burbage, 21st ult.—' T H O M A S FRANCIS MOGER, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., face freckled and bloated, hair sandy, clean shaved, scar on chin, lower jaw has been fractured, flower and ship right forearm, well educated, London accent; dress, black jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, cap, new light lace boots. Stated he was a Reservist from the Bedfordshire Regiment, that he had served in India and South Africa, also that he had been an asylum attendant at Claybury, Essex. Warrant issued. James, Buxton. 7.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 15th inst., a bicycle, " No. 13244" on saddle pillar, black enamelled, with green and gold lines, usual parts plated, plated rims with green centre, 26 in. frame, 28 in. by 1J in. wheels, " Lion" transfer, with name, " Beatson, Mossley Street, Birming- ham," therein on head and back of mudguard, Lion tyre on front wheel, Leicester tyre on back wheel, rubber pedals, raised handle bars, with black celluloid grips, front rim brake, Eadie coaster hub back wheel, tool bag, nearly new— HARRY GRAY, alias ERNEST SMITH and JOHN COLQUHOUN, Office No. 340- 07, Case No. 51, 15th inst., age 26, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey ( cast left), woman's head right, sailor, female and clasped hands left forearm. A hair dresser; native of Devonport. Is a good pianist, and fond of playing in public houses. Previous to stealing the bicycle he called at a refreshment house in this town, and after a meal he was shown upstairs to wash his bands, and when he had gone, the under- mentioned property was missed from a bedroom : 2 small gold dogs; 1 small gold- plated dog; 1 gold watch key, shape of bellows, green stone one side, ruby the other: 1 small gold photograph pendant, about size of shilling; 1 dark brown crocodile leather purse, silver mounts, containing 16s. 6d., Miss Wright, 18 Corporation Street, Chester- field," written inside in ink. Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 30th ult., 2 ladders ( recovered)- CHARLES VICTOR HOWDEN, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 9 in., red face, blotchy, hair brown ; usually wears blue overalls. A labourer or window cleaner. May be found at common lodg- ing houses. Plays a brass instrument. May be found working at a colliery possessing a band. He left Blaenavon, Mon.. in May last. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the Guardians, Weymouth Union, for the arrest of Bradshaw. Information to the Chief Constable, Weymouth. ESSEX. 11— Chelmsford ( County). GL OUCES TERSHIRE. n.— Gloucester ( County).— For obtaining a pair of brown shoes by false pretences— PERCY S. SCOTT, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ( cut short) sandy; dress, light grey lounge suit, with dark stripes, bowler hat. He called Cipon a tradesman, presented a card, asked that goods be sent to the address shown thereon for selection, and on the owner calling for the articles, SCOTT stated he had just received a telegram on important business, and left, taking the goods with him. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 18. — Basingstoke ( County). — For em- bezzling 13s. 8| d. SAMUEL ALFRED SMITH, age 23, height's ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes brown, clean shaved; dress, usually a blue serge suit. A milkman. Has served in the Navy; has also been employed on a poultry farm near Shaftesbury. Left for Reading on 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Basingstoke. - For stealing from his lodgings, 3rd inst., a white and blue shirt, and £ 1 10s.— WILLIAM FREDERICK JONES, alias HECKFORD, HICKFORD, HARTLIP, CLARKE, PHILIP L'ESTRANGE, and WIL- LIAM HUTTON, Office No. 1844- 05 ( ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR NO. 96, Figure 23), Case No. 25, 20th May last, age 26, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, crossed swords right arm,, 2 anchors, " I. L. M.," and 3 dots left arm, 2 left toes missing; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, grey cap. A nurse; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 12. — Romford ( County). — For malicious wounding at Hornchurch, 16th inst.— WILLIAM HENRY GEORGE HAUNSLOW, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fresh, oval face, hair and moustache light, inclined to ginger, eyes believed blue; dress, brown suit ( 2 cuts in coat), black hard hat, had with him a blue- black overcoat and pair of blue overalls. An electro- plater; native of Birmingham. May seek employment at electro- plating factories in London, Birmingham, or Coventry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. 18. — Wit ham ( County). — For obtaining a cheque for £ 1, by false pretences, at Rivenhall, 28th ult.— H. LEVESON, alias CHARLES LEATHERS, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, lump on forehead, of good address; dress, dark grey suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Stated he was collecting subscriptions for a social club about to be opened in the neighbourhood. Produced a book with supposed signatures of gentlemen re- siding in the district. He hired a bicycle, and on returning same asked the cycle dealer to cash the cheque. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lennon, Witham. HEREFORDSHIRE. Id. — Hereford ( County). — For embezzling 18s. 4id., at Withington, 9th ult.— FRED WIL- SON, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, lull red face, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey, 1 left and 2 right fingers missing, of good address; dress, dark coat, grey breeches, brown leggings, black hard hat. Stated he was a native of Folkestone, and believed to have been a farmer. Was employed delivering milk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. brown, slight moustache dark, bold eyes; dress, dark coat and vest, cord breeches with brown canvas leggings, green cap, heavy lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued. SURREY. 25. — Dorking ( County). — For sheepstealing at Betchworth, 3rd inst.— ROBERT CHARLES INGS, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, nose red, bridge has been broken; d ress, greenish coat, dark tweed trousers, lace boots. A fish hawker; native of Esher. May seek employment with fish- mongers or horse dealers. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. t 26.— Dorking ( County).— For obtaining X' 100 by fraud— JOSEPH BRAMLEY ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, full round face, broad forehead. A cycle agent or dealer. He rented a shop, opened it as a cycle business, then advertised it for sale, stating the profits were £ 6 to £ 8 a week. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Boon, Dorking. 27. SUSSEX ( East). Uckfield ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered)— SYDNEY FUL- HAM, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., well built, hair and eyes brown, full red face, coarse features, one finger missing; dress, dark striped tweed suit, dark cap, heavy boots, patched on left toe. Stated he was a sailor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Criddle, Uckfield. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing workhouse clothing— JOHN THOMPSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, slight cast in one eye. A sailmaker.— WILLIAM SMITH, age 62, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, one eye missing. A marine fireman; both wearing tweed suits, stamped " Car- diff Union." Warrants issued. 15. — Cardiff ( City).— For warehousebreaking lltli inst., and stealing clothing FREDERICK PHILLIPS, alius FRED SMITH, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., strong build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, several pimples on face and neck, Yorkshire accent, impediment in speech; dress, brown suit, green mixture motor cap, brown boots, may be wearing blue dungarees. A motor mechanic. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. 16.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing clothing, 14th ult.— DEBORAH REES, alms DOROTHY REES, age 19, height 5 ft. 1 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( frizzy) dark, eyes brown; dress, black threequarter length jacket trimmed crepe, black skirt, and straw hat. A domestic servant; native of Glanaman. Was arrested for false pretences at Ammanford in November, 1909. May be found at Salvation Army Homes or in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. KENT. 20. — Sandwich ( County). — For stealing a half- plate stand camera, 3 double dark slides, in a brown canvas bag, " Aldis Anastigmat Lens" on camera— WALLACE ERNEST CRAWLEY, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, round shoulders, leans forward when walking; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown tweed trousers, bowler hat or skull cap, lace boots. Ab- sconded 2nd iust. Is known at Watford, South- end, and Chatham. May be found working with the camera at seaside towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stone, Sandwich. 21.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) 15th inst., a " London" bicycle, 24 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, flat handle bars, inverted lever brakes, en- amelled black, rubber pedals, " London" transfer on head— — HARRIS, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved; dress, dark suit and cap, black tie with white spots. Is also wanted at Great Yar- mouth and Ramsgate. Is accompanied by a boy, age about 6; wearing white sweater and green knickers, whose photograph can be seen on appli- cation. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 22.— Ramsgate ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 11 8s., 15th inst,— G. GILL, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., very red face, hair and heavy moustache light, Irish accent; dress, brownish grey suit, cap turned up at back. Believed a native of Lancashire. Stated he had served in the Army, that he was wounded in the leg in the South African War, and was in receipt of a pen- sion of Is. per day. While here he stayed at a common lodging house, and may be found work- ing on farms or on agricultural show grounds. Ab- sconded 15th inst., had in his possession about £ 30 ( including a £ 5 note), and said he was going to London. Warrant issued. 23. — Ramsgate ( Borough). — For stealing, 14th inst., a free- wheel bicycle, black enamelled, plated rims, upturned handle bars, black grips ( end of one damaged), Phillips rim brakes, 2 mudguards, stays rusty, ^ in. by 3- 16 in. roller chain, 73 gear, 7 in. cranks, odd pedals ( 1 rat- trap, 1 lady's rubber), Dunlop 28 in. by 12 in. tyres, Lycett saddle, plated coils, Lucas- Challis bell- A " MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., long face, hair light, supposed clean shaved; wearing blue trousers, rather old boots. Was ac- companied by a boy, age 5 years. May be found staying at a coffee house at seaside resorts. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. WARWICKSHIRE. 28.— Birmingham ( City).— For obtaining two revolvers, by false pretences— WILLIAM HAROLD SANDERSON ( supposed false), age 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved; dress, dark suit and cap with large peak. He wrote from a coffee house at Nottingham, asking for the revolvers to be sent, and forwarded a declaration purporting to be signed by the Chief Constable. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 29.— Birmingham ( City).— For forging and uttering a cheque— BERT WICKHAM, age 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., good build and muscular, com- plexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, clean shaved; dress, dark lounge suit, white sweater. A music hall artiste; native of London. Gives exhibitions of strength. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Birming- ham. YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). id. 18, S TAFFORDSHIRE. 24.— Uttoxeter ( County).— For obtaining £ 4 by false pretences— ALBERT LLOYD, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark 30.— Hull ( City).— For embezzling £ 12 19s. 8th inst.— THOMAS FISHER, age 17 or height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes light brown, rather feminine appearance; dress, dark grey suit, light fancy vest, dark grey cap, new brown lace boots. A clerk. Invariably carries papers in his left hand. Will be accompanied by his mother, age 48, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale; dressed in deep black clothing. Takes lodg- ings at seaside towns, states she has a large amount of money due to her, and absconds without paying her bill. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 31— Doncaster ( County).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Doncaster Union — LEESON MARGOTTS, age 35, height 5 ft. 8A in., complexion dark, hair and eyes brown, abscess scar left side of neck. A native of Doncas- ter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hickes, Court House, Doncaster. 32. — Keighley ( County). — For embezzling 18s. Id.— HARRY BURROWS, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, " A. S." right forearm, flags and horse's head left forearm; dress, grey jacket and vest, brown trousers, black and white check cap, light lace boots. A carter or groom; native of Biggles- wade, Bedfordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Birkhead, Keighley. FRIDAY, JUNP/ 24, 1910. 269 METROPOLITAN POLICE.- CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT. MURDER AND MUTILATION. 33.— For the murder of Cora Crippen, otherwise Belle Elmore, Kunigunde, Maekamotski, Marsan- gar and Turner, on or about 2nd February last. De- scription of Crippen: Age 50, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, inclined sandy ( scanty), bald on top, rather long scanty moustache, somewhat straggly, eyes grey, bridge of nose rather flat, medium build, throws his feet outwards when walking. May be clean shaved or wearing a beard and gold rim spectacles, and may possibly assume a wig; sometimes wears a jacket suit, and at other times frock coat and silk hat; may be dressed in a brown jacket suit, brown hat and stand- up collar ( size 15). Somewhat slovenly appearance, wears his hat rather at the back of head. Very plausible and quiet spoken, remarkably cool and collected demeanour. Speaks French and probably German. Carries firearms. An American citizen, and by profession a doctor. Has lived in New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Detroit, Michigan, Coldwater, and other parts of America. May obtain a position as assistant to a doctor or eye specialist, or may Portraits, Description and Specimen of Handwriting of HAWLEY HARVEY CRIPPEN, alias PETER CRIPPEN and FRANCKEL, And ETHEL CLARA LE NEVE, alias Mrs. CRIPPEN and NEAVE. Description of Le Neve, alias Neave :— A shorthand writer and typist, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair light brown ( may dye same), large grey or blue eyes, good teeth ( many false), nice looking, rather long straight nose ( good shape), medium build, pleasant, lady- like appearance, quiet, subdued manner, talks quietly, looks intently when in con- versation. A native of London. Dresses well but quietly, and may wear a blue serge costume ( coat reaching to hips) trimmed heavy braid, about h in. wide, round edge, over shoulders and pockets, three large braid buttons down front, about size of a florin, three small ones on each pocket, two on each cuff, several rows of stitching round bot- tom of skirt; or a light grey shadow- stripe costume, same style as above, but trimmed grey moire silk instead of braid, and two rows of silk round bottom of skirt; or a white princess robe with gold sequins; or a mole coloured striped costume with black moire silk collar; or a dark vieuxrose cloth costume, trimmed black velvet collar; or a light heliotrope dress.
