N I S I . t. rtrtf GAZETT PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 8, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2768. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOB OF THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. B. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8. T. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6J. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 6 8. Announcements of all persons to he apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing 24th ult., a pair of boots ( recovered)— CHARLOTTE NORTHWAY, alias SMITH, age about 42, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., rather stout build, complexion very pale, hair turning grey, very plausible ; dress, believed dark skirt, black blouse and hat. May be wearing a grey or brown jacket. Had with her a wicker hamper. A native of Newbury. 9.-— Reading ( Borough)— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 12th and 25th ult. -* HARVEY, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache brown, turning grey, well educated; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat, carried a stick with silver band. A designer and artist, will no doubt seek employment at printing works. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 10.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 23rd ult., an Iris bicycle, nearly new, enamelled black, lined red, plated rims, Silvertown tyres, mudguards, 24 in. frame, upturned handle- bars, roller lever brakes, " The Iris Cycle Co., Coventry," on transfer BAMTON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, pleasant manner; dress, dark mixture lounge suit, brown boots. On 20th ult. he hired a " Royalboro " road racer bicycle, No. 56589, Palmer back tyre, Edinboro' front tyre with Castlewood tube, made by the " Robin Hood Cycle Co., Surplice, Windsor," on transfer. BRECONSHIRE. 11.— Brynmawr ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a governess car ( recovered)— ROBERT SIMONS, a half- caste, age 40 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 7 in., clean shaved, peculiar gait. Sup- posed a native of South America. Usually employed at fried fish shops or greengrocers. Stated he had been a ship's cook. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Brynmawr. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 12.— Great Marlow ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 3 by a fictitious cheque on the Citizens Deposit and Trust Company, in March last— HAROLD M. WEIR, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, clean shaved, square shoulders; well dressed. Stated he was a mine manager in the United States. Warrant issued. 13 — Great Marlow ( County).— For stealing 17s from her lodgings, 21st ult.— — TAYLOR, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes blue; dress, black skirt, black three- quarter length coat, black hat or toque trimmed black ribbon, black veil. Stated she had business to transact with a local solicitor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, County Police Station, High Wycombe. CHESHIRE. 15.— Birkenhead ( County).— For stealing ( servant) at Great Sutton, 3rd ult., a lady's gold curb chain bracelet, small gold chain attached; 1 gold safety pin brooch, 2 in. long, turquoise in centre, pearl each end; 1 small gold heart shape locket, amethyst and pearls; the above were contained in a jewel case, green plush top, silver band ; 1 cretonne dress, cream, fancy neck; 1 lady's long black cloth coat ( velvet collar, straps at back, leather buttons); also a quantity of other clothing, furs, boots, & c.— ANNIE FOSTER, alias MARY ANNIE FAIRALL, Office No. M 10511, age 47, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair dark, rather hairy on chin. Has a London accent, plausible manner; dress, black skirt, black and white hat trimmed feathers. Supposed wearing stolen coat. Was at Chester and London on the date of the theft. Has been convicted in London of forgery and fraud. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Birkenhead. CUMBERLAND. 16.— Whitehaven ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Union, 17th ult. — RICHARD O'NEIL, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes brown; dress, usually dark clothes, hard felt hat. A labourer, has lately resided at Cleator Moor. Warrant issued. 17.— Whitehaven ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Union, 20th ult. — JOHN GEORGE TURNBULL, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, long face, clean shaved, 2 small scars left forearm, small mole left shoulder. Native of Ross- shire, has been employed as a farm servant at Yeathouse, Frizington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hogg, Whitehaven. DORSETSHIRE. 18.— Beaminster ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), at Bridport, 27th ult., a bicycle ( recovered) — L. J. KINNAIRD, age 25, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, grey striped suit, patch one knee, dark cap, well educated. Gave name of Doyle. Has been employed as cook on a sailing vessel. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Beaminster. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings a white and blue striped linen shirt and £ 1 10s.— FRED HECKFORD, age 26 or 27, height 6 ft., complexion pale, long face, hair dark brown, eyes blue, tattooed both forearms, of smart appearance; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, grey cap. A native of Shepherd's Bush. Stated he had served in the 2nd Life Guards. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 20.— Grays ( County).— For stealing a diamond glass cutter ( recovered), at Langdon Hills, 8th ult. — FREDERICK STACEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved; dress, dark mixture suit, green stripes, right sleeve of jacket stained with hot lime, dark cap. Obtains employment as a painter, and commits robberies at houses where employed. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Grays. FORFARSHIRE. 21 — Dundee ( City). — For embezzling £ 90, between lst November, 1909, and 15 th ult.— GEORGE McINTOSH, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion sallow, bloated face, hair and slight moustache light; dress, light grey tweed suit, black hard felt hat, carried a light grey or fawn colour rainproof coat. A butter and margarine manufacturer's traveller. Absconded 18th ult. May endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 22.— Treharris ( County).— For embezzling 5s. 4d., at Mountain Ash, 6th ult. — HARRY MURPHY, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown; wearing dark clothes. A haulier, native of Tipperary. Warrant issued. 23.— Treharris ( County).— For stealing a pair of lace boots, hand- sewn; 1 woollen undervest, 1 grey flannel shirt and a pair of blue socks, at Aberaman— WILLIAM HEAL, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, prominent nose, Union Jack, stars and stripes'tattooed right forearm; dress, brown coat and vest, navy blue trousers, blue muffler, black cap, light lace boots. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 24. — Northleach ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered).— EDWARD BOOTH, alias GILDER, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, slight moustache; dress, old pilot coat, brown cord trousers, cap, heavy lace boots, nearly new. A farm labourer, native of Dowdeswell. Absconded 17th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Northleach. 25.— Bristol ( City).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM CHAFFEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair brown, inclined to curly, cast in left eye, tattooed clasped hands left wrist; dress, brown coat, vest and leggings, cord trousers. Has been employed as a porter at a boot shop, formerly worked in a coal pit. Absconded 16th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 26.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult., a gold tabular bracelet; 1 silver- gilt brooch, 1 in. wide ; 1 rolled gold muff chain ; 1 lady's silver watch No. 73776 ; 6 apostle spoons; 6 tea do.; 6 egg do.; 1 5s. piece made into a brooch; 1 lady's gold brooch, enamelled back, gold snake chain attached; 1 gold locket, picture of gentleman inside; 1 pair plain silver tongs; 1 round gold brooch, acorn in centre; 1 gold brooch consisting of 4 gold rings joined together.— EDITH WILSON, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion ruddy, sunburnt, long pointed nose, hair cut short, of masculine appearance ; dress, crushed strawberry print dress, long white coat. 27.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For deserting their wives and families, leaving them chargeable to the Parish— JAMES WILLIAM CROUCH, alias WALLACE, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., minus forefinger nails. A navvy, well known at Lymington ; and GEORGE COX, age 44, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. A labourer, native of Yorkshire. Last heard of, 7th ult., when he went to Hayling Island. Well known at Southampton. Warrant issued. 29.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a jacket and £ 5 2s., 3rd inst.— HARRY MASON, age 27, height 5 ft. 7£ in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin features, hair dark brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, front teeth missing, crucifix and 2 women right forearm, dagger, coat of arms, butterfly, flower and K. B. left forearm; dress, dark green mixture jacket, " Whitehouse" on tab, black vest, brown cord trousers, cap. A native of London. Has served in the Royal Horse Artillery, and was discharged for misconduct, also convicted at Havant 26th March last of stealing a bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. rather thick, covered with gilt, 1 basin, 1 tile painted for teapot stand, 2 jugs of different shape, 10 in. high, pale blue handles, slightly decorated with gilt, the above are all hand painted, French landscape views, except one, which is a view of the fields at Catford, and each piece of china has the initials " A. G." or " A. Grillet" and the year which they were painted thereon; 6 cups and saucers of fine china painted by Maria Grillet, 1 blue corn flowers, on back of saucers painted " Remember me, by Maria Grillet," 2 red copies, 1 red fuschia, 1 violets and yellow rose, 5 of these cups and saucers were marked " M. G."; 1 gilt clock, figure of woman with wreath of roses seated beside clock on gilt stand, about 16 in. long, 13 in. high, believed to be bronze and of French make, on block wood stand; a brown Gladstone bag, 23 or 24 in. long, about 13 in. deep, if marked, would be either " R. L." or " H. D. Hewitt"— D. A. G. NEEDHAM, alias Lieut. EATON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., square build, complexion fresh, hair auburn, moustache light, tattoo marks on one forearm; dress, grey suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Sevenoaks. 31.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing a brown leather purse and £ 2 from his lodgings, 4th inst.— FREDERICK FULLAGER, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown; dress, navy blue jacket suit, light green cap, elastic side boots. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Manchester ( City). — For larceny.— GEORGE WARRENER, alias HEWSON and ROBERTS, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey ; dress, navy blue coat and vest, grey striped trousers. A groom, native of Sheffield. Is also a pianist. May seek shelter at Church Army or Salvation Army Homes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. NORFOLK. 33. — Harleston ( County). — For obtaining £ 10 15s. and a washleather bag by false pretences, 29th ult.— Supervisee JAMES HOUGHTON, alias ARTHUR BRADLEY, Office No. 595- 04, age 39, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar right eyebrow, 2nd left finger and back of left ear ; dress, dark jacket and trousers, fancy vest, light tweed cap, fawn- colour overcoat. Has been previously convicted at Norwich, King's Lynn, Don- caster, Newcastle, Grimsby, and in London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Southgate, Harleston. SHROPSHIRE. 34.— Ludlow ( County). — For stealing, 10th March last, a table cloth ( recovered).— WALTER LINDOP, age about 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, artificial teeth. A butler, native of Saltney, Chester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Perry, Ludlow. STAFFORDSHIRE. . 35 — Burton- on- Trent ( County).— For fail- ing to report— Licence- holder JAMES WOODINGS, alias GEORGE BROWN, Office No. 958- 1906, age 37, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar back of left hand, fleshy lump, back of neck. A labourer, native of Newborough. Sentenced at Stafford Assizes, 4th December, 1906, to 4 years penal servitude and remanet of a former sentence for housebreaking. Liberated on licence 18th June, 1910, which expires 31st August, 191L e. g. 68. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Moss, Burton- on- Trent. SUSSEX ( East). 36 — Hailsham ( County).— For obtaining food: and lodgings by false pretences at Willingdon, between 25th and 28th ult.— GEORGE VICTOR SUMMERS, age 39, height 5 ft. 11£ in., complexion, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes blue;. dross, green striped jacket, navy blue trousers, bowler hat. A painter. Stated he was an Army pensioner,, also that he had served in the Cape Mounted Police. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Willard, Hailsham. 37 — Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing, 23rd May last, a small box hand truck, nearly new, T- shape handle, body painted dark green, wheels red, lined black, 2 ft. 8 in. high, side springs, 3- fork iron.- KENT. 30.— Sevenoaks ( County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 24th ult., at Chelsfield, a china tea service, viz., 6 cups and saucers, thin china, 6 plates 6 by 7 in. across, 2 round dishes 9 by 10 in. across, 1 teapot, 1 sugar box, 1 cream jug, handle TUESDAY, AUGUST 247, 1 9 1 0 . DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. 41.— Dublin ( City).— For feloniously breaking and entering the Post Office at Nassau Street, Dublin, between 11th and 13th June, 1910, and stealing Postal Orders, cash and stamps, value £ 380, by safe- breaking.— LOUIS ROSS, alias JOSEPH HODGE and LOUIS LATTER, Office No. S. 27272, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, long nose, small moustache dark, eyes brown ; wearing dark clothes, short coat, and black hat, sometimes wears a cap. A native of New York, and was a watchmaker. Convicted at Glasgow 27.8.08, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for housebreaking. THOMAS G. MEIKLEJOHN, alias THOMAS GRAHAM, and STANLEY, Office No. S. 103886, age 22, height 5 ft, PORTRAITS OF PERSONS IN CUSTODY. NORFOLK. 40.— Norwich ( City).— Committed for trial at I 2 scars on head, mole left cheek. Both are tailors Quarter Sessions, 11th inst., charged with telonious | and natives of Russia. They admit having been 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, clean shaved, or may have a slight moustache, Scottish accent; wore dark brown coat and vest, trousers darker shade, generally wears a cap. A native of Glasgow. Has been a bookmaker's clerk Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Lowe, Detective Department, Dublin. COLE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion, hair and moustache dark, Scotch accent; dress, dark mixture jacket and trousers, green vest, bowler hat. Carried a brown leather bag, containing patterns of cloth. He stated he represented a manufacturing cloth Company at Bradford, solicited orders for suits and obtained the above amount as a deposit. Is also wanted at Liverpool, Blackpool and Chester. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 77.— Doncaster ( Borough).— For obtaining 3 cows by a worthless cheque, 25th ult.— JOSEPH HURST, alias HICKEY, age 44, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right temple and over right eye, slight scar left elbow; dress, blue suit, black bowler hat.
