GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2744. I. All communications for insertion in the POLIOS GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOE OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars ooncerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. • i. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent ; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, an as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion { if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Not now ivanted. 2.— A Division.— For obtaining 25s. by false pretences— C. S. ATKINSON ( supposed false), age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache light; dress dark grey overcoat, black hard felt hat, blue tie, brown boots. He advertised a cart for sale in the Exchange and Mart, and received letters containing cheque and postal orders at a stationer's shop. Warrant issued. 3.— O Division.— For unlawfully converting £ 530 to his own use— ANTONIO SMERALDI, alias RUSCONI, CHIARELLI and PRICE, an Italian, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair and small moustache light brown, high forehead with several large wrinkles, turns his head to right side, and partially closes left eye when conversing. Speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish fluently; dress, blue overcoat ( black velvet collar), dark jacket suit, dark tie, black bowler hat, lace boots. Late of Cromwell Grove, Shepherds Bush. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 4.— Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing between 5th and 31st ult.— a piano organ makers, Rosse and Spinelli and Co., Ltd., on outside, Pasquale and Co., inside on music board, No 107 on block inside, half of mirror in front missing, Antonio Paceitto written inside, very old green baize cover, barrow painted light blue, lined red and yellow, odd wheels, one painted light blue, one dark blue, top of shaft repaired, box across handles— CHARLES GOODMAN, age about 42, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair and beard dark; dress, check jacket, plain vest, black trousers, cap. He disposed of a piano organ in December last, No. 723 on board of music box, 2021 on music block, Goodwin written in pencil on inside, makers Chute and Witball, 40 keys, 8 tunes, shews a set of Franco- German War Pictures, on a barrow with red shafts and box, yellow wheels, lined blue ( supposed stolen). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 5— Chesham ( County).— For stealing corn and hay, 6th inst.— Supervisee ERNEST KENNY, Office No. 2522- 01, age 32, height 5 ft. 8J in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar right wrist and lst left finger, front upper teeth missing ; dress, dark mixture suit, dark cap, red and black muffler, dark grey overcoat. — PICKET1, aged 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, slight fair moustache, eyes appear to be weak. These men traverse the suburbs of London collecting rags and bones. Natives of London. Warrants issued. 6 — Chesham ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., carpenter's tools ( recovered)— JAMES THORPE, alias PARKER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark turning grey, eyes grey, long nose, thin face, left handed, London accent; dress, grey jacket, brown Derby tweed trousers, dirty grey cap. A tramping painter, has served in the Army, talked of White- chapel and Brick Lane, London, also of having served in South Africa, usually stays at beer or common lodging houses, will probably seek employment at builders' or contractors' yards, carried a parcel con- taining 1 pair white socks, 1 blue striped shirt, 1 pair khaki trousers. Has worked at Sheffield, Bolton, and Leicester. See Case No. 8, 8th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Trevener, Chesham. 7.— Eton ( County). — For embezzlement — CHARLEY HOWARD, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on chest, frog tattooed left forearm. Has served in the Army. A native of London, was employed as a baker's roundsman. Was sentenced to 6 months hard labour at Hants Assizes in March, 1909, for stealing an order for payment of money. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Marks, Eton. 8. — High Wycombe ( Borough). — For deserting his wife and family, 11th ult.— WILLIAM SMITH, age 28, height about 5 ft. 4 in., broad set, complexion fresh, full round face, slight light mous- tache. A labourer, usually employed in market gardens. Warrant issued. 9. High Wycombe ( Borough).— For stealing a metal watch from his lodgings, 8th inst.— FRED , age about 25, height 6 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( cut short) dark, eyes dark brown, stoops slightly, is said to have only one upper tooth ; dress, pilot jacket, jersey, sleeve vest, cord trousers, white and black neckerchief, heavy nailed boots. Stated he was a timber feller. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, High Wycombe. DURHAM. \ Q— Gateshead ( Borough).— For stealing from a dwelling- house, 24th ult., a Raleigh bicycle, black enamelled, 24 in. frame, 26 in. wheels, drop handle bars with black grips, Bowden back brake, ordinary front brake, plain pedals with toe- clips, Brooks' saddle, inflator fastened to frame with elastic, wheels rusty; a lady's 18- ct. gold ring ( set 3 rubies, one large in centre, and two diamonds); and a blue serge suit ( nearly new), jacket square cut, rounded at corners, vent in back, " Jobling, Redheugh Road, Gateshead," on tab, single- breasted vest, 4 pockets, fits high up to neck— LOUIS DEBILE. aKas HORACE CHAMBERS, LOUIS WALKER, ALFRED McCONAHIE, MCCARTHY, REGINALD DEACON, LEWIS WALKER, and ARTHUR CHARLES PAGE, Office No. 1563- 06 ( Illustrated Circular 78, figure 8), age 27, height 5 ft. 5\ in., complexion pale, hair brown, heavy black moustache, eyes brown; dress, green suit and tie, rubber collar. A clerk ( stated he was a professional football player), native of London. Is a good singer and pianist. Has been convicted at Oxford, Reading, Belford, Northumberland, Middles- brough, Cromer, London and Edinburgh. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Gateshead. obtaining HAMPSHIRE. 11 .— Fareham ( County). — For £ 106 5s. 6d., by false pretences— RUPERT ORLANDO^ ARTHUR FYSON, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light auburn inclined to ginger, eyes blue, R and scar left forearm, fleshy lumps right side of nose; dress, blue melton or beaver Chesterfield overcoat, blue serge suit, black hard hat, Southall boots with strap and buckle, wears gilt rimmed pince- nez with plain glass, or gilt rimmed spectacles with faint blue glass. Had with him a brown leather travelling case, initials " R. O. A. F." thereon. A chemist's assistant and dentist, native of St. Neots. He lectures on liquid air, Rontgen Rays, etc., at religious meetings, usually Wesleyan. Absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. 12. — Gosport ( County). — Information re CHARLES L. B. BRIGDEN, Case No. 67, 25th ult., cancelled. 13.— Gosport ( County).— For non- payment of £ 9 9s., maintenance arrears— SAMUEL PAGE, age 58, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light brown, eyes blue, 2 moles left cheek, sears back of both hands. A labourer, native of Lancing, Sussex. Usually employed on farms, or as a carter for haulage contractors. Is a pensioner of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 14.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For leaving his children chargeable to the parish of Portsmouth— THOMAS GLOSSOP HOWITT, age about 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather thin build, complexion fresh, may be clean shaved; dress, blue serge suit, dark cap. Sentenced at the South Western Police Court, London, 8th September, 1908, to 6 weeks and on 12th June, 1909, to two months imprisonment. Warrant issued. HER TFORDSHIRE. 15. — Hertford ( County).— Absconded from Canorchard, Stratton, Cornwall, 28th ult., while on licence from the Herts Reformatory School— FREDERICK HALLAM, age 17£, height 5 ft. lin., complexion pale, slightly freckled, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, Indian ink marks left arm, long scar left knee; dress, brown and white mixture tweed suit, dark cap, fawn colour mackintosh. LANCASHIRE. 17.— Bltry ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 6th inst., 4 pairs of boots ( 1 pair box calf, Derby fronts, size 8, Monarch on tab, tree on reverse side; 1 pair glossy calf, size 9, do.; 1 pair tan Derby fronts, size 9, do.), 1 pair recovered— A MAN, gave name G. WATSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., comploxion fresh, hair and moustache light; dress, dark jacket suit, hard hat. He left a bicycle which he stole in Manchester as security. Warrant issued. Information to the Supt. Police Office, Bury. 18.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing a tin cash box, containing £ 26 ; 1 pair of brown worsted trousers ( small), " J. W. Wright, Wigan," on buttons— JOHN BARRETT, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shaved, turns one foot inwards; dress, dark grey overcoat, brown overalls, light grey cap. A native of Warrington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ross, Leigh. 19.— Salford ( Borouqh).— For failing to report — Licence- holder ELIZABETH SOUTHWARD, alias SOUTH WOOD and JONES, Office No. 2185- 02, age 27, height 4 ft. 6J in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar over right eye, ears pierced. A laundress, native of Manchester. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 12th February, 1908, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 16th March, 1910. i. 6. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 20.— Nottingham ( City). — For obtaining £ 130, by false pretences, 6th inst. — HENRY PIDDUCK, age 52, height about 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, moustache grey, eyes hazel, scar over right eye; dress, blue serge suit, black hat, he left behind a shirt " William McHarry," written in ink, thereon. Is believed to have come from Belfast to Nottingham, obtained a living by hawking fish, induced a person whom he promised to marry on the 11th inst. to with- withdraw her money from building Society and deposit it at the Local Bank in his name. Absconded 9th inst., when it was found he had withdrawn the whole amount. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. OXFORDSHIRE. 21.— Bicester ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., a lady's Triumph bicycle, enamelled green, Oxonian transfer, Advance tyres, upturned handle- bars, inverted lever brakes, metal gear case, plated rims, bell— A WOMAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion, hair and eyes dark ; wearing black clothing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allmond, Bicester. SHROPSHIRE. 22.— Wellington ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) furniture— WILLIAM HENRY WILSON, age 25, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small moustache ( twisted at ends) brown, may be growing a beard, of smart appearance, usually well dressed. A railway signalman, native of Wellington. Absconded 2nd inst. May endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Fulcher, Wellington. ST A FFORDSHIRE. 23.— Stafford ( County).— For fraudulently converting to his own use 51,000 francs in French notes, 3rd March, 1903; £ 353 on 22nd March, 1908, and £ 207 on 7th June, 1907— PATRICK BURKE ( supposed an Irishman), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey; usually wears black clothing, gold rimmed spectacles. He was formerly a co- partner of a firm of Solicitors at Stafford. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Supt. Spendlove, Stafford. WORGES TERSH3RE. 25.— Stourport ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst, a yellow tin cash box, containing £ 60 at Rochford — JOSEPH PARSONS, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes ( peculiar cast in one) grey, wears spectacles, clean shaved; dress, supposed blue serge suit or may be wearing dark breeches, black leather leggings, black hard felt hat, red tie, ' light lace boots. He is a good piano player and conjurer. May be found with pierrots. Has been employed as an Assurance agent. Native of Netherton, Dudley. Booked from Newnham Bridge to Birming- ham, carried a canvas portmanteau with leather straps. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walker, Stourport. 26.— Worcester ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, a small round gold pin, set small dia- mond, a pack of cards, and £ 1 14s. REECE ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very fresh, hair brown, 2 upper teeth missing; dress, green mixture jacket and vest, dark trousers with light stripes, dark fawn check rainproof coat, dark brown cap, brown lace boots, may have " Forshaw, Worcester " on collar, wore a lady's small dress ring, set red stones, on left little finger, and a lady's keyless watch with curb chain. Stated he was a clothier's traveller. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Worcester. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). 27. — Middlesbrough ( Borough). — For stealing from his lodgings. 19th ult., 1 pair of boots, also stealing 1 pair do., 2nd inst.— THOMAS WILLIAM DOWNES, age 26, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion, eyes and moustache dark, hair dark brown ; dress, dark tweed jacket and trousers, white painter's jacket, dark vest, blue and white necker- chief, green cap, light glace kid boots. A painter, native of Darlington. Previously convicted at Bedale, Darlington, South Shields, West Hartlepool, Chester- le- Street, Sunderland, and Guisborough. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Middlesbrough YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 28.— Rotherham ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— GEORGE ROWLAND WILLIAMS, alias JAMES SMYTH, HERBERT VILLIERS, JAMES TERRY and THOMAS JENKINS, Office No. 2605- 01 ( Illustrated Circular 85, figure 24), age 46, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark blue. A tailor, native of Armagh. Called on the agent for the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society, and obtained money on the representation that he had that morning been discharged from prison on licence. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. larceny from jeweller's shops— MARION LITTLE- WOOD, alias MARY LITTLEWOOD, BERTHA LITTLEWOOD, MIRIAM WOOD, MARY SHERWOOD, MARION ROBERTS, and LOUISA WILKINSON, Office No. 579- 08, ago 53, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, left breast removed by operation, mole left cheek, scar left wrist; dress, dark brown plush jacket, black skirt, brown hat, and brown fur boa. A native of Leamington. Information to the Chief Constable, Banbury. WORCESTERSHIRE. 32.— Redditch ( County).— Remanded till 20th inst., charged with obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— ABRAHAM FAIRCLOUGH, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair ( nearly bald front and top) light, eyes grey, left hand con- tracted, plausible, speaks rather fluently, slightly deaf; dress, green striped jacket, dark grey vest, dark brown striped trousers, light green cap, lace boots. States he is a groom and gardener. Native of St. Helens, Lanes. Supposed previously convicted in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Information to Supt. Hayes, Redditch. SURREY. 2i.— Chertsey ( County).— For larceny ( ser- vant)— FRANK WRAY, age 18, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair very dark, prominent nose, clean shaved, Jewish appearance, plausible manner. May be found in Brixton or Chelsea, London. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mears, Cherteey. PROPERTY STOLEN. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Bristol ( City).— Remanded till 19th inst., charged with obtaining £ 115 by false pretences, 15th and 17th ult.— JAMES HENDERSON, age 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, slightly bow- legged; dress, dark suit, light tie with gold pin, black bowler hat, sometimes wears brown leggings and boots. Represented himself as a job buyer and commission agent, associated with horse dealers, boxing and betting men. Advertised in a local paper " Partner required, smart reliable man, all outdoor work, Capital £ 100 to £ 150, £ 3 5s. guaranteed paid weekly, L. H., Evening Times and Echo Office," an applicant was induced to part with his money after which Henderson left the city and was arrested at Oxford. Had in his possession a dark bay cob mare, 14 hands, white star on forehead, short tail, grey spot at top, short mane, small white patches across back, spring near hind hock, a set of nearly new brown harness, brass mounts, plaited reins, and a nearly new brown varnished dogcart, solid body, 2 rails at sides and back, side wings, front board with brass toprail, moveable spring seat, blue cushions, rubber mat, blue shafts, lined chocolate colour and faint green, brass tips, blue wheels, brass hubs, face , of caps filed off, rubber tyres, 2 steps, 2 new brass mounted candle lamps, patent leather whip socket with brass top. Supposed previously convicted and wanted elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30.— Louth ( County).— Committed for trial at ensuing Lincoln assizes, charged with arson.— JOHN KENDAL, age 38, height 5 ft. 6f in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, cut scar first joint of right forefinger and centre of left little finger. A labourer, native of Liverpool. Information to Supt. Swaby, Louth. OXFORDSHIRE. 31.— Banbury ( Borough).— Committed for trial at ensuing Quarter Sessions, charged with BEDFORDSHIRE. 33.— Bedford ( County).— 7th inst., at Elston, a free- wheel bicycle, 24- in. frame, black enamelled, " Thomas Plant, Bedford " on mud- guard, inverted lever brakes, large pattern Brooks' saddle, new rubber pedals, tool bag, straight handle- bars, rather narrow, in fair condition, mud- guards rather rusty— By A MAN, age 35 ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, cap. Information to Supt. Anniwell, Bedford. DERBYSHIRE. 34 - Chesterfield ( Borough).— 7th inst., a Swan Fountain pen; 1 pair of boots, size 10, Derby fronts, nearly new ; a child's purse, containing Is.; a quantity of picture postcards, Christmas cards, and cards given with cigarettes.— Supposed by A MAN, age 26, height 5 ft., hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, large boil right jaw, number of boils left jaw. Bracelet tattooed on wrist, impediment in speech; dress, dark suit, trousers patched on loins, dark grey cap, light lace boots with cloth sides. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 35.— Dumfries ( County).— 9th inst., at the Dumfriesshire Steeplechases— a 9- ct. gold expanding bracelet, bead pattern, small gold keyless watch, No. 22343, attached, the winding head projects very much. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police, Dumfries. ESSEX. 36.— Chelmsford ( County).— 8th inst., a road racer bicycle, 24- in. frame, black enamelled, upturned handle- bars, 26- in. wheels painted French grey, metal mud- guards, red rubber band round centre of front tyre, transfer on head " Cleale, Chelmsford"— by man who gave name GEORGE RICE, stated he came from Little Waltham, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., had about a week's growth of beard • dress, short dark overcoat, light cord trousers, dark cap. He has been several times convicted at Bishop Auckland of theft and pitch and toss. Craig at one time worked in the pits at Spenny- moor, and was also a member of the 3rd Durham Militia prior to 1904, and underwent training at and 2 front of forehead, right and left of neck and 2 back of left hand, burn scar left thumb; dress, rough dark blue or dark check suit, turn down collar, broad breast tie, heavy lace boots. A miner, native of Spennymoor. Sentenced at Durham Assizes, 22nd November, 1904, to 7 years penal servitude for rape. Liberated 24th ult., and arrived in Darlington from London early 25th ult., stayed there until the follow ing morning when he left, stated his intention of Barnard Castle. He escaped with the revolver in his possession and left his cap behind.
