All communications fo~ insertion in the POLICB GAZBTTE, and all communications relating to them, shoulh be addressed to THB EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NBW SOOTLAND YARD, Lonrox, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought mill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6j. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsiole for any proceeaings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. Th<- y must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be » » the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or bi/ Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Strei- t Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. SPECIAL NOTICE. GEORGE SCRIMSHAW, using the names of MRS. CLAYTON, W. FRANCIS, W. Not now wanted. 3-— K Division.— For stealing ( servant) XI 10s., 22nd February last— JOHN HAYWARD, alias FREDERICK WILLIAM ACARNLEY, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, round shoulders, com- plexion fair, long thin face, hair brown, eyes grey, small nose, burn scars on forehead, slouching gait, stoops; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, dark cap, black muffler, button boots. A native of Manchester. Warrant issued. 4.— W Division.— For obtaining £ 1 by a worthless cheque, No. L. 7./ T. 20617 on London City and Midland Bank, Old Bond Street, W., Branch— S. A. CHANDLEY, age 35 to 37, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., strong build, complexion florid, round flat face, long narrow nose, hair dark, eyes small, strong north country accent; dress, brown suit, dark grey overcoat, dark tie, bowler hat. Supposed a native of West Hartlepool. Is believed to have other cheques from same book ( supposed stolen) in his possession. Warrant issued. A YRSHIRE. 5.— Troon ( Coimfy).— For fraud 24th ult.— — JONES, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair black, eyes jet black; dress, three quarter length cape, black skirt, black crape hat, very broad gold wedding ring, large drop earrings. — MINCH, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 1 in., stout build, complexion and eyes dark, hair ( worn in 2 plaits at back) black, blue scar right side of face, legs somewhat deformed, walks badly ; dress, dark tight fitting jacket, dark skirt and motor cap. They travel the country with 3 caravans, 2 spring carts, and 8 horses, " R. Green, Lower Leamington," " Frank Lovell, Kidlington Road, Oxford," and " Render Green, Licensed Hawker. Lower Leamington, Gloucester" on caravans, hawk skins, rugs, & c. They call upon shopkeepers, represent that they are staying in the district for some weeks, give bogus orders for goods to be supplied, thereby induce the tradesmen to purchase a rug at a price greatly in excess of its value. See Case No. 18, 31st December, 1909. The above left the remainder of their party at Kilmarnock, 25th ult., and may endeavour to rejoin them elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th ult., a J- plate Goerz- Anschutz camera, focal plane, Dagor lens, extension back, six double dark slides, film pack adapter, Houghton's film envelope adapter, tele- photo lens, in good condition— WALTER F. READ, age 60 to 70, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( cut very close) and moustache grey, thin long face, nose very sharp and prominent, of military appearance ; dress, black overcoat, morn- ing coat and vest, dark trousers with darker stripes, black hard felt hat, carried a black hand- bag. Stated he was a war correspondent. Was in Hastings on the 12th ult., and London 17th ult. He takes a turnished house, and obtains goods from the local tradesmen, also answers advertisements of cameras for sale in the Amateur Photographer, asking that same be sent to him, and if suitable, a cheque would be forwarded, then absconds, leaving the tradesmen's bills unpaid, and disposes of the cameras. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. BR EC ONSHIRE. 7.— Talgarth ( County).— For obtaining £ 50 by false pretences— DAVID LEWIS, alias W. WILSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., long prominent nose, thin chin, clean shaved, stoops slightly ; dress, grey Norfolk suit with green stripes, soft grey hat. He took lodgings at a farm, and obtained the money from a firm in Leeds by repre- senting he was the owner of the farm. Left behind a Coventry Challenge Roadster bicycle, No. 181661, 26- in. frame, inverted lever brakes, free wheel, roller chain, Imperial saddle. Letters were received fr » m him, posted at Bristol, 7th and 17th ult., asking that the bicycle be sent to Newport, to be called for, and that a reply be forwarded to Gloucester Post Office as to date sent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Flye, Brecon. BUCKINGHA MSHIRE. 8.— Chesham ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., carpenter's tools ( recovered)— JAMES THORPE, alias PARKER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark turning grey, eyes grey, long nose, thin face, London accent; dress, grey jacket, very dark brown or black trousers, dirty grey cap. A tramping painter, has served in the Army, talked of White- chapel and Brick Lane, London, also of having served in South Africa, usually stays at beer or common lodging houses, will probably seek employment at builders' or contractors' yards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Trevener, Chesham. CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 9.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining 2s., 9th ult., and 5s., 10th ult., by false pretences— S. HENDRY, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair inclined to ginger turning grey, clean shaved; dress, dark suit, grey dust overcoat, brown bowler hat, old brown boots. Left here, Nth ult, accom- panied by his wife, may be found in furnished rooms or private lodgings, stated he was a debt collector for Messrs. Stuart and McKenzie, Aldersgate Chambers, Goswell Road, London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 10.— Chester ( City). — For attempting to commit an unnatural offence, 17 ult., HENRY PICK- ERING, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, eyes blue. A joiner, native of Chester. Absconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. THE POLICE GAZETTE. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing a brown jacket and 16s. 2nd inst.— SAMUEL VAUG- HAN, age 51, height 5 ft. 6| in., slight build, complexion sallow, thin face, delicate appearance, hair ( turning grey, curl on forehead) and slight moustache brown ; dress, the stolen jacket, dark vest, brown cord trousers, blue striped muffler, dark cap, heavy lace boots ( one cut in 3 or 4 places in front). A blacksmith, native of Sunderland. Stated he was discharged from the Army as medically unfit. May seek admission to unions, hospitals, & c. Ho was employed assisting the deputy ol a common lodging house for a few days. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 12 — Exeter ( City).— For obtaining £ 30 by false pretences— H. STUART ELLISON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., round shoulders, rather slight build, complexion dark sallow, rather thin features, prominent nose, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes ( piercing) dark, stoops slightly, of delicate and Jewish appearance; dress, dark grey suit, bowler hat, carried a brown leather handbag. About 3 weeks ago he took lodgings, and had inserted in a local paper " Smart young gentleman required for position of trust, must deposit £ 30 cash security, apply by letter stating age and full particulars." He represented to the applicant that he was a money lender, and his duties would be to interview persons applying for loans. A few days later, the person defrauded was given the name and address of a person in Bournemouth who required the loan of £ 200, but on arrival there no such person could be found. Abiconded 24th ult., and may be found committing .- imilar frauds in other towns. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. 18.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing a quantity of furniture and clothing— GERTRUDE SARAH BROWN, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and hair dark, Roman nose, very small eyes, believed pregnant; dress, long brown jacket or light grey cloak, brown skirt, burnt straw hat, trimmed pink and brown ribbon. Has been employed as a dress- maker and charwoman.— WILLIAM BROWN, alias H. GRAY ( brother of above), age 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustachebi own, inclined to sandy, tattooed both arms, leans forward when walking; dress, dark blue suit, dark muffler and cap. Has served in the Duke of Cornwalls' Light Infantry. Has been employed gardening, also hawking fish. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— tSosport ( County).— For stealing at Alver- stoke, 28th ult., bricklayer's tools ( recovered)— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light; dress, dark clothes, and skull cap, believed dark overcoat. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 20— Ronssey ( County). — For stealing at Broughton, 10th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)—- — HARRISON, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, hair and slight moustache light, rather short sighted ; dress, blue three- quarter length over- coat ( velvet collar), black trousers, light cap ( too large for him), light lace boots, linen collar, " Potters, The Broadway, Southsea" thereon, blue and green tie, carried a small bag containing tools. Appear- ance of a mechanic. He took lodgings, stated he was employed in the neighbourhood, sometimes states he is employed by the National Telephone Company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Littlewood, Romsey. black bowler hat, wore a leather bit and stirrup watch guard, gold snake ring set ruby and diamond, usually carries a stick. Stated he was a boot and shoe dealer from Northampton, also that he came from Nottingham. Is believed to attend race meetings. He called at a pawnshop, asked to be shown a lady's gold watch, was not satisfied with those produced, the manager then telephoned to a branch shop for two watches to be sent by messenger, Weekley met the lad, obtained the watches from him on the pretence of showing them to his wife, and decamped. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28. — Louth ( Borough). — EDMUND MAC- KINDER, Case No. 28, 25th February last. Not rum wanted. Warrant withdrawn. NORFOLK. 29.— Great Yarmouth ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered)— R. or H. KINGDOM, age 20, height s ft. in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes broWii, clean shaved, heart, anchor and daggers right forearm, dagger, butterfly, whip, cross and cap left forearm, scar back of head. Is a deserter from the 16th Lancers, and was wearing uniform. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Great Yar- mouth. RADNORSHIRE. 30 — LSandriodod Wells ( County).— Tot deserting their wives and children, leaving them chargeable to the Rhayader Union— FRANK COOPER, age 43, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache light. A ganger or labourer, native of Manchester. EDWARD THOMAS DAVIES, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light, eyes grey. A clerk, native of St. Harmon, Radnorshire. Now supposed working as a labourer or collier in South Wales. Warrants issued. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by Mr. G. M. Jarman, Clerk to the Board of Guardians, Rhayader, for the arrest of either of the above. Information to Sergt. Rogers, Rhayader. SHROPSHIRE. 31. — Ghurolt Strettoss ( County). — For obtaining lis. by false pretences at Clun, 16th November, 1909— J. THOMPSON, alias LUMSDEN, JACKSON, and T. HENDERSON, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, long thin features, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, navy blue overcoat ( astrachan collar and cuffs), brown suit, green cap, lace boots. A native of Huddersfield. MAUD THOMPSON, alias DORA THOMPSON ( supposed wife of above), age about 22, height about 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair ( partly lalse) auburn, walks erect; dress, long tight- fitting blue coat, red costume, brown straw hat, motoi) veil, lace boots. Stated she was a native of Leeds. Represented they were soliciting orders for a photographer at Knighton. See Case No. 44, 24th December, 1909. Warrant issued. SUFFOLK ( East). 32.— Framlinghatn ( County).— For stealing at Weybread, 24th ult., 8 hens ( recovered).— ROBERT CHARLES SEAMAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, fresh, hair brown, eyes light brown; dress, dark brown suit, tight fitting, may be wearing a soft slouch hat or cap. A dealer, native of Need- ham, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mann, Framlingham. SURREY. 33.— Dorking ( County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque on Smiths Union Bank, Oxford, 22nd ult., a grey mare, aged, 15- 2£ hands, long swish tail, fired on both front legs, lump right side of neck, high withers, bare at top, a set of black harness, brass mounts, and a four- wheeled dogcart, by " Windover," light colour, iron plate on floor partly under front seat, basket strapped between fro. it and back seats, pole and bar tied to trap, a brown horse rug with red braid.— J. ROBERTS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark brown, eyes grey ; dress, dark suit, blue melton overcoat ( velvet collar), violet or mauve tie, hard felt hat. May be found at horse sales or repositories. Supposed identical with man Case No. 4, 25th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Boon, Dorking. SUSSEX [ East). 34.— Brighton ( Borough).— For carnally know- ing a girl under 16 years of age— ARTHUR FINNIS, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, full red face, moustache ginger, carries his ESSEX. 13.— Southend ( County).— For stealing from their lodgings, Hist ult., a brown jacket suit, dark stripes; 1 blue skirt, black web band, unlined; 1 youth's dark grey jacket; 1 pair lace boots, size 8, with toe- caps; 1 silver watch, key- winding, open face; 1 white counterpane, figured; 1 white fine calico chemise, and £ 2 3s. 6d.— ETHEL WARD, age 36, medium height, complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, dark dress, black astrachan coat and toque— WARD, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, thin face, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark ; dress, black suit and overcoat, bowler hat, lace boots, nearly new. Supposed natives of London. Accompanied by three children, viz., a girl age 8, a boy age 6, very dark, and a girl age 2, very fair, wearing cream colour coat, cape and bonnet. Repre- sented himself as an agent for the Wesleyan General Assurance Company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, age 33 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 . or 10 in., one shoulder droops slightly, hair turning grey, clean shaved ; dress, fawn colour shower- proof overcoat, dark trousers, black hard hat. He ascer- tains the owners or agents of certain houses, also the day and time the rents are usually collected, then calls upon the tenants slightly earlier than the authorised collector, whom he states has been taken ill, obtains the amounts and initials the rent books. Warrant issued. <** 15.— Cardiff ( City). — For embezzlement— WILLIAM NEWTON, age 20, height 5ft. 8 in., strong build, complexion fresh, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, brown suit and cap. A porter, some- times employed distributing bills. Warrant issued. 16 .— Cardiff ( City).— For failing to join his ship after negotiating his advance note— ALEXANDER PIRIE, age 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, small face, slight moustache, flat feet; dress, navy blue suit, dark muffler and cap. A marine fireman, native of Aberdeen. Expressed his intention of returning to Aberdeen and to obtain employment in the fishing industry. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 17 .— Gloucester ( County).— For unlawful wounding, also for stealing 2 heifers ( recovered)— LEONARD CHARLES GODDARD, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair very dark, slight moustache, and eyes dark, chest and left instep have been injured, slightly lame; dress, dark square cut jacket with light stripes, dark striped trousers, green cap, military boots. Appearance of a groom or farm labourer. Native of Gloucester, had served in the army. Absconded 26th ult., had in his possession £ 20. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. KENT. 21.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 2 pa rs Scotch hshing waders; 2 pairs fishing boots ; 1 pair oars ; 5 pairs rowlocks ; 4 boat cables ; 2 gallons of varnish; 30 lbs. lead colour paint; 1 gallon linseed oil, between 10th and 17th ult., at VV'hitstable— HERBERT WATERS, aged 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes grey, carries his head forward ; dress, fawn colour overcoat, blue guernsey and trousers, P. and O. cap. A boatman, native of Whitstable. Warrant issued. 22.— Canterbury ( County).— On commitment warrant tor assault at Heme Bay, 29th January last— JOHN PAN TON, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, of smart appearance, usually dressed as a groom. Is a reservist of the Bedfordshire Regiment. May seek employment as a potman or ostler. 23.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing £ 5 and a light green overcoat at Womenswould, 13th February last— ALEXANDER CRINKLEY, age about 46, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion ruddy, hair and moustache sjudy; dress, blue morning coat, tweed trousers, green cap with yellow seams, too large f jr him. A gardener. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heard, County Police Office, Canterbury. 24. —£ Jlartford ( County).— For embezzling 10s. — GEORGE HUNT, age 38, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, full red face, hair dark brown, mous- tache light. May seek employment at coal wharves. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Poole, Dartford. 25.— Dover ( Borough).— For absconding, 25th ult., from the Juvenile Adults' Home for Kent, Maidstone, while an inmate under the Probation of Offenders Act — HARRY HENRY WILLIAM MILLEN, age 14, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion lair, hair light brown, eyes blue, dot tattooed left leg below knee; dress, Norfolk jacket, black trousers. A native of Dover. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Rochdale ( County).— For stealinga watch from his lodgings— A MAN, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, long lace, hair brown; dress, dark suit with raised stripes, blue muffler, dark or green cap. A native of Dronfield, Derbyshire. Information to Supt. A hairdresser, native of Edinburgh. He left Bishop Auckland of theft and pitch and toss. BERKSHIRE. 74.— Reading ( County).— Killed on the Great Western Railway, at Theale, near Reading, about 8 p. m., 14th ult.— A MAN, age 40 to 45, length 5 ft. 7 in., grey eyes, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey, slightly bald on top) and moustache brown, indistinct tattoo marks on right arm; dress, grey tweed jacket and vest, brown trousers with faint grey stripe, brown stockings, woollen pants and undervest ( both nearly new), black bowler hat, lace Derby boots, also two other vests and a pair of trousers. Appearance of a tramp. She did not regain consciousness, but while in the hospital mentioned the names of Gertie Shaw, King Street, Plymouth, and Bridget Casey, Birmingham or Bermondsey. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 76.— Dumfries ( County).— 31st ult., died suddenly in a lodging house in Ecclefechan, after having been engaged in a fight with another man, who is in custody on suspicion of causing his death— A MAN, age about 35, length 5 ft. 11 in., complexion dark or swarthy, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes grey, thick lips, rather round shoulders, walked with a stiff gait, and spoke with North of England accent; dancing girl with right arm raised and hand drooping towards shoulder, clasped hands, and " Alice tattooed right forearm, bust of female with sailor blouse in red, and " Lizzie" left forearm, 4 vaccination marks and scar on upper left arm, scar on front of right thigh, 1 across knee, and on outside of calf near shin, large scar outside left thigh, 1 on knee and on inside of calf, scar on each side of abdomen in line with navel. Stated that he had served in the Army, and went through the late South African War, for which he received 2 medals and clasps, which he had pawned. He appeared to have been on tramp for some time, and for the last 3 weeks acted as a warder in the lodging house, where he was known as " Jack" or " Darkie." Photograph can be had for identification.
