THE NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2734. 1. All communication* for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8.?. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given • on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should, be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. CORNWALL. 1.— Bodmin ( County).— For forgery, and uttering 2 forged promissory notes, each for .£ 400— OLIVE ALICE SIMCOE WILLYAMS, alias OLIVE ALICE SIMCOE MARKS ( wife of Captain Hugh Willyams, late of Tregorland Street, Just- in- Roseland, Truro), age 33, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., medium build, complexion fresh, plump round cheeks, full chin, large prominent upper lip, bold forehead, blue eyes, ordinary nose, brown eyebrows, brown hair ( which may be a wig); well dressed and of ladylike manners. Is said to be of independent means. May be accompanied by her husband and a little girl, age 10. May endeavour to leave the country, or be found at fashionable seaside resorts staying at good class hotels or boarding houses. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to Major H. B. Protheroe Smith, Chief Constable of Cornwall, Bodmin. THE POLICE GAZETTE. A butcher, native of Peterhead. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Aberdeen. BEDFORDSHIRE. 10.— Bedford ( Borough).— Fox obtaining 10s. by false pretences CAVE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, hair brown, rather heavy moustache ginger, twisted ends, holds his head downwards when walking, very plausible manner. He called at a public house, represented that he was a traveller for a firm of boot manufacturers, Rushden, asked if a wire could be directed to him at the public house from his firm, consent to this was given, he then left, stated he would return shortly ; in the meantime a telegram was delivered ; on his return he opened the wire, then stated his firm wanted him to go on to Norwich, and asked for the loan of 10s. Warrant issued. 11 — Bedford ( Borough).— For forging and uttering a bill, thereby obtaining on 26th ult., 5 £ 50 Bank of England notes, Nos. N over 5, 47981- 38562, dated 17.9.08; N over 4, 47558, 77545 and 77546, dated 17.8.08; 3 £ 10 do., Nos. K over 20- Q3433, dated 14.7.08; K over 23- 19727, dated 15.8.08; K over 13- 89455, dated 15.2.08, and £ 13— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache dark, wearing dark overcoat, hard bowler hat. On 26 ult., the manager of a Bank here received a letter together with a cheque for £ 236 on the London and South Western Bank, New Cross Branch, purporting to come from a customer ask- ing that the cheque be placed to his credit, also giving notice that an accepted bill for £ 293 became due for presentation that day, and requested the manager to pay same and debit his account. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford, BERKSHIRE. 12.— Windsor ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 2 lis. 6d. by false pretences, 11th ult.— WILLIAM BURROWS, alias STURLEY, Office No. S/ 32421 ( Illustrated Circular 73, Figure 11), age 33, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, small waxed moustache. He called on a publican and appointed him sole agent for R. Sturley and Co., " Hercules" Stramonium Cigarette Manufacturers, 109, Lower Park Road, Peckham, S. E., and by false pretences obtained the above mentioned sum, leaving 4 boxes of Stramonium cigarettes, which are worthless. Warrant issued. 13.— Windsor ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JOHN JAMES MAY, alias GEORGE WETHERED, Office No. 2561- 01 ( Illus- trated Circular, 75, Figure 18), age 44, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion dark, hair and moustache ( clipped) very dark brown, eyes hazel, dot back left hand; dress, grey mixture suit, heavy boots, cap. A native of Egham. Sentenced at Kingston Quarter Sessions, 18th October, 1904, to 7 years penal servi- tude for sacrilege. A dangerous thief. Licensed 10th January, 1910. Y e 371. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. DERBYSHIRE. 16.— Chesterfield ( Bwough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 8th inst., a silver Geneva watch, keyless, white dial; 1 meerschaum pipe in case; 1 calf skin tobacco pouch; 1 light woollen shirt, grey stripes CREIGHTON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey, curly on top) and moustache dark, front teeth much decayed, lady tattooed on one arm, design and 3 letters on other; dress, brown jacket and vest, blue trousers, speckled grey muffler, cap, light boots. Stated he was a moulder, and had obtained employ- ment in the neighbourhood. Had in his possession a Board of Trade Mercantile Marine Discharge Book, which shows that he worked his passage from Argentina to England. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. BREGONSHIRE. 14.— Brecon ( County).— For larceny, LEWIS LEWIS, alias CRINK, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, oval face, hair dark brown, eyes brown, lost right thumb, scald scar both shoulders, cut scar right knee, dot between left thumb and forefinger. A tinker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Flye, Brecon. DORSETSHIRE. 17.— Beaminster ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 7th ult., a light mackintosh with green velvet collar and £ 17, including 3 £ 5 notes— FRED JOHNSON, age about 32, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes brown ; wear- ing grey coat, dark vest ( double breasted), grey vest, red plaid scarf, dark cap, brown leggings, probably the stolen mackintosh. A North countryman. Has served in the army. Attends fairs, and has worked for a horse dealer. ( See Case No. 14, 11th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Beaminster. ESSEX. 18.— Grays ( County).— For stealing a watch and chain ( recovered)— ELLEN SUTTON, alias MUR- RAY, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair very light, tattooed back of one hand; wearing brown velvet coat, brown fur, and large black hat. Frequents common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 19 — Saffron Walden ( County). — For obtaining a pair of box calf Derby boots, size 7, and £ 1, by a worthless cheque, No. L. 8/ D- 85130, dated 14th February, 1910, for £ 1 18s. 6d., by J. Millington, on the London City and Midland Bank, 20, Eastcheap, E. C., endorsed J. Birch— J. BIRCH, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, eyes grey, turns his right foot inwards; dress, light green mackintosh overcoat, navy blue trousers, green tweed hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hailstone, Saffron Walden. FORFARSHIRE. 20. — Dundee ( City). — For stealing blankets and obtaining £ 58 13s. lOd. by fraud, between 15th August, 1909, and 10th ult.— ROSE JAMESON alias PURVIS, age about 56, short, stout build, hair and face white, of good address and very plausible; dress, navy blue or green dress with coat to match, black hat with large black feather, yellow gloves, black muff. Stated she was a native of Brighton, that she was a dressmaker, obtained goods and money on the pretence that she had valuable jewels deposited in the bank, and that she was going to Edinburgh to sell them. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 21.— Cardiff ( City). — For absconding with workhouse clothing— DAVID DAVIES, age 51, height 5 ft 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, long thin face, pointed chin, small mouth, hair dark, moustache light, slightly lame ; dress, dark suit, cap, blucher boots, all stamped L" Cardiff Union Ely Workhouse." A hawker. Warrant issued. 2 SPECIAL NOTICE. PREVENTION OF CRIMES ACT, 1871. A case has recently arisen where a Man, who had been circulated in the " Police Gazette" to be dealt with where found, was charged in a certain Police District under the Prevention of Crimes' Act with failure to report in another Police District, and the Learned Magistrate discharged the man. In future, in order to avoid similar mistakes, such circulations in the " Police Gazette" from Provincial Forces, will appear weekly under one heading in Tabular Form. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 2.— F Division.— For stealing, 24th ult., a Sizare motor car, 12 horse power, single cylinder engine, transverse spring across front of radiator, valance on front mudguards, axle has been repaired, flat tool box with luggage carrier top at rear, painted red, picked out black, No. E. P. 1877— J. PALMER, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, weight 14£ stones, complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved; wearing large dark grey overcoat, soft tweed hat. Warrant issued. 3.— F Division.— For forging and uttering a receipt for the payment of £ 1 15s. 8th January last— PAUL ANTHONY LE HAY, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes brown, of smart appearance ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 4.— G Division.— For obtaining goods by worthless cheques drawn on the London and South Western Bank, New Cross Branch— THOMAS KITTS, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion, heavy moustache and eyes dark, hair black, rather flat feet, appearance of a Greek; dress, dark tweed suit, dark overcoat, black bowler hat.— EDMUND ASPLAND, alias MATTHEWS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue; dress, black tweed suit, dark overcoat, fur collar. A native of Lewisham, Kent. May have cheques in their possession from No. B- 099141. Warrant issued. 5.— G Division.— For causing grievous bodily harm and stealing £ 15, 13th ult.— SIDNEY SHARP, age 21, height 6 ft., complexion pale, thin features, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, left hand deformed; dress, blue serge suit, grey cap, button boots. A barman, native of London. Warrant issued. 6.— K Division.— For obtaining £ 1 15s. by a seaman's bogus advance note— FRANK McEVOY, alias GASNIER, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, thin face, hair light, mous- tache sandy, eyes sunken, walks erect; wearing black overcoat, velvet collar, patch pockets, dark tweed cap, dark neckerchief. A seaman. Warrant issued. 7.— 5 Division.— For being concerned with WILLIAM MASON, FREDERICK and CHARLES PAICE, awaiting trial at St. Albans Quarter Sessions for burglary, 20th December last, and stealing £ 20— ALBERT HOPKINS, alias SMITH, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, walks erect; dress, dark suit and cap. A labourer, native of High Barnet, Herts. He travels the country selling picture postcards, and associates with poachers and fowl thieves. 8.— w Division.— For bigamy— WALTER JOSEPH QUINN, alias JOSEPH McQUINN, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion very dark, thin face, hair ( turning grey) black, clean shaved, eyes brown, second right finger deformed, Irish accent; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A stone mason, native of Hanley, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. A BERDEENSHIRE. 9.— Aberdeen ( County).— For obtaining a cow by fraud at Laverockcraig, Old Deer, 22nd ult. — FREDERICK DYSON CLUBB, age 37, CHESHIRE. 15. — Stockport ( Bo/ rough). — For stealing £ 13 10s. from a sub post office, 26 ult.— THREE MEN, lst, age 40 to 50,, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build; dress, light suit ; 2nd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., wearing a dark overcoat; 3rd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., thin features. One of the above described asked the postmaster if he could give him half a sovereign for silver, which was done ; shortly after a second man called and said that some boys had covered the window with mud. The postmaster went outside, and on turning to go back to the shop, he met another man coming out who stated he required a stamp. The postmaster then followed the boys a short distance, and on returning to the office found that the above amount had been taken from the drawer. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. 22. — Cardiff ( City). — For absconding with workhouse clothing— MAURICE O'BRIEN, age 68, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and eyes grey, lame, uses a stick; dress, dark tweed suit, cap, blucher boots, all stamped " Cardiff Union Ely Workhouse." A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 23.— Bristol ( City).— For converting to his own use £ 10 entrusted to him— CHARLES EDWARD SMITH, age 60 ( looks much younger), height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), of smart appearance; usually wears a three- quarter length drab colour covert coat, black bowler hat, may be wearing a blue melton over- coat. LINCOLNSHIRE. 2i.— Alford ( County).— For embezzling £ 20, at Suttoii- on- Sea, 9th ult.— VINCENT ORR WISE- MAN, age 27, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( thin in front) light brown, clean shaved, of good address and smart appearance; dress, light or LANARKSHIRE. 29.— Glasgow ( City).— For uttering forged cheques to the value of £ 100 and stealing £ 10 on 11th and 26th ult.— DONALD McLEAN MAIN, age 25 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair light, clean shaved, prominent nose, slight cast in left eye, very large hands, well educated and of good address ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, heavy dark overcoat, with strap at back, bowler hat. He was employed as secretary and cashier to a Motor Garage and Repairing Company. Spoke of going to Australia. Is believed to be accompanied by A MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair and slight moustache dark; dress, light tweed suit, bowler hat. Both addicted to drink, and may be found in company of loose women. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 30.— Bury ( County).— For obtaining £ 11 10s. by false pretences at Heywood 25th January last.— ARTHUR MESSENGER, age 42, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes dark, nervous twitching of face, drawling specch. A blacksmiths' striker, native of Halifax, lie obtained the above amount fron: a female on the promise of marriage. Warrant issued 31. — Bury ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings 3rd inst., a pair of boots ( recovered) ; 1 long green coat, with velvet collar; 1 pink blouse; 1 pair corsets, and a grey under skirt— A WOMAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 or ' 4 in., complexion very ruddy, hair ( curly over ears) dark; dress, light grey shawl, green hat, black skirt. Has been a domestic servant, native of Oldham. Frequents common lodging houses. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. dark suit, heavy dark overcoat ( double breasted), probably wearing black tie. An auctioneer's clerk, native of Cornwall. May be accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 22. Absconded 24th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hill, Alford. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT—( continued). attends race meetings. Is believed to have served in the Metropolitan Police, also in the army. Absconded about 3 weeks ago. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Hereford ( City).— For leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Hereford Union— WILLIAM WILLIAMS, age about 20 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache black, eyes brown. A labourer, native of Kingstone, Hereford. May be found with horsedealers. Warrant issued. 26.— Hereford ( City).— For leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Hereford Union— PERCY CARLISLE HARLEY, age about 36 ( a dwarf), com- plexion fresh, hair brown. A comedian, native of Horsham Sussex. Is supposed touring with a theatrical company, may be found with a cinemato- graph show. Is well known at Newport, Mon, and South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hereford. LINCOLNSHIRE. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 27.— Huntingdon ( Count!/).— For an indecent assault, 24th ult.- JACK MAIIONEY, age 22, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion very sallow, slight moustache dark, eyes deep set, Irish accent; dress, dark suit, black overcoat, light cap. A coach body builder. Prior to coming to Huntingdon he resided at Peck- ham, London. Warrant issued. 28. - Huntingdon ( County) - For stealing £ 1 12s. 6d., 26th ult- JOHN TAYLOR STEVENS, age 41, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, grey cap, new lace boots. During the past 6 weeks he has been soliciting orders for a clothier. Had in his possesion a pedlar's certificate dated 4th February, 1910, granted at Huntingdon. He spoke of having lived at Uxbridgc, and in Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Huntingdon. WA R WICKSHIRE. 35.— Nuneaton ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle— Supervisee ELI BLOWER, Office iSTo. 1905- 08, age 37, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, ruptured right side. A native of Tamworth. Has been convicted at Northampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Evans, Nuneaton. 33.— Grimsby ( Borough).— For carnal know- ledge— ARTHUR WATKIN, age 40, height 5 ft. 9£ in., slight build, complexion sallow ( much pock- marked), hair ( turning grey at sides) dark brown, rather large moustache inclined to sandy, several cut scars on head, large scar on one hip; dress, dark blue coat and trousers, dark cap, violet colour muffler black flowers thereon, 2 patches in seat of trousers, may be wearing a blue guernsey. A wire worker, makes puzzles, flower stands, & c., which he sells in public houses. Has in his possession a pedlar's certificate, No. 101, issued at Grimsby, 13th September, 1909. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Grimsby. 5 TA FFORDSHIRE. i Handsworth ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- holder SMITH TAYLOR, alias CARFORD and BRADBURY, Office No. 2459- 01, age 36, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( thin), eyes grey, scar right eyebrow, back of neck and right wrist. A native of Shipley. Has been convicted at Bradford, Dewsbuiy, Leeds, Bourne, Northallerton, Stafford, Grantham and Lincoln. Sentenced at Newark Quarter Sessions, 21st October, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for shopbreaking. Licensed 28th January, 1910. T. Y. b. h. 458. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Campbell, Handsworth. YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 36.— Hull ( City).— For obtaining £ 1 16s. by false pretences— J. POINTER, alias BERTRAM, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, moustache ginger; dress, blue serge suit, light fawn colour mackintosh, hard hat, brown boots with straps, lie calls upon stationers, states he represents a firm of ink and pen manufacturers, produces a fountain pen and a quantity of pens, for which he charges an exorbitant price, induces the shopkeepers to part with money for show cases, & c., stating he will make them sole agents for the district. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 37.— Hull ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— ALEC WINTER, alias COLTER, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion rather dark, hair dark brown, heavy moustache brown, of Scotch descent, C. A. C. believed on right forearm, twitches his forehead when talking; dress, dark blue worsted jacket ( square cut), and vest, facing of different material, dark blue trousers, red tie, dark cap, dark mackintosh ( shabby), old boots, white handkerchief with " J. Corney " in corner. Believed a native of Canada. Stated he had been a sergeant in the Salvation Army. May seek employment as a seaman, labourer or milkman. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Hull. 32.— Lincoln ( City).— For stealing, 26th ult., a horse and trap ( recovered)— Licence- holder HENRY NEVILLE, alias II. C. He came to this city, 28th ult., stayed at a first- class hotel, and made the acquaintance of a veterinary surgeon, informing him that he was a member of that profession, and obtained one of his cards. After obtaining sums of money from other people in the city, he obtained the horse and cart referred to, which was subsequently recovered at Newark. He left Newark, lst inst., for Retford, whero he stayed at a public- house one night, , representing himself to be Mr. E. Porter Smith, M. R. C. V. S., Lincoln, and had in his possession several of Mr. Smith's professional cards. On the 2nd inst. he booked from Retford to Sheffield. This man will doubtless visit first- class hotels, and pass himself off as a veterinary surgeon, and will produce Mr. Smith's card in attempting to defraud people. Warrant issued.
