POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2732. 1. All eommunicatiom for insertion in the POLIOB GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, SW. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8.5. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and HO warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are onlu accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. THE EDITOB, New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. SPECIAL NOTICE. PREVENTION OF CRIMES ACT, 1871. A case has recently arisen where a Man, who had been circulated in the " Police Gazette" to be dealt with where found, was charged in a certain Police District under the Prevention of Crimes' Act with failure to report in another Police District, and the Learned Magistrate discharged the man. In future, in order to avoid similar mistakes, such circulations in the " Police Gazette" from Provincial Forces, will appear weekly under one heading in Tabular Form. I APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For forging and uttering bills of exchange— CHARLES PHILLIPS, alias CHARLES HUTCHISON PHILLIPS, an Irishman, age 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar over right eyebrow, extensive scar right side of body, 2 small brown moles right forearm. Warrant issued. 2.— G EfivisiOBi.— For obtaining by false pretences, 27th January, a pearl necklace, 57 pearls, weight 532 grains, may have ruby and diamond clasp attached; and on 29th ult., 2 pearl necklaces, 67 and 73 pearls respectively, weight of each 286 grains ( the 2 latter since traced in pledge)— ERNEST H. BRUFORD, age about 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, round face, hair ( thin on top, going bald in front) and small moustache black, eyes large ( whites of eyes very noticeable), voice refined, soft and musical, wears gold- rimmed glasses, sometimes pince- nez, usually wears frock coat and silk hat. A pearl merchant, late of 56, Maddox Street, Regent Street, W., and Maxwell Road, Northwood, Middlesex. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For stealing ( servant), £ 8 2s. 7d., 17th January, — HENRY JOHN JENKINS, age 22 ( looks much older), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache brown, sleepy eyes, black spot inner corner of left eye; dress, blue striped jacket suit, black hard felt hat, brown boots blacked. A clerk, native of Greenwich. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 4.— New Windsor ( Borough).— For obtain- ing £ 2 lis. 6d. by false pretences, 11th ult.— WILLIAM BURROWS, alias STURLEY, Office No. S/ 32421 ( Illustrated Circular 73, Figure 11), age 33, height 5 ft. 5| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, small waxed moustache. He called on a publican and appointed him sole agent for R. Sturley and Co., " Hercules" Stramonium Cigarette Manufacturers, 109, Lower Park Road, Peckham, S. E., and by false pretences obtained the above mentioned sum, leaving 4 boxes of Stramonium cigarettes, which are worthless. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, New Windsor. ; DUMFRIESSHIRE. 5.— Dumfries ( Burgh).— For obtaining board and lodgings and the hire of a motor- car by fraud, 27th and 28th ult.— BERT YORKE, alias CHAR- TERS and HAYDON COLLIER, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair black, clean shaved, of theatrical appearance; dress, light tweed suit, brown check overcoat, with belt at back, black bowler hat, old brown lace boots. Is said to frequent theatres, music halls and skating rinks, representing himself as an advance agent for a theatrical company. Has in his possession a number of cheque forms on the London City and Midland Bank, Carlisle Branch. Also wanted at Bradford and Carlisle. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfries. DURHAM. 6.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment, 15th ult.— WILLIAM HUSTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( inclined to curl) dark, clean shaved, heavy eyebrows, dimple in chin, square pinkish birth mark right side of face, when spoken to he drops his lower jaw, which gives him a surly expression; dress, light brown knicker- bocker suit, dark stockings, may be wearing blue serge suit, muffler with red stripe, heavy dark greyish blue overcoat. A native of Liverpool. He was employed as local manager for a firm of American and Colonial meat importers of Liverpool and London. Absconded 17th ult. Had a large sum of money in his possession. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Sunderland. ESSEX. 7.— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings a pair of Wellington boots, size 8, No. 2829, 2. D. stamped on outside at top— BILL MURPHY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., good build, hair and moustache light, ballet girl, snake entwined, true love and flower right forearm, tomb- stone " In memory of my father " left forearm, thick upper lip, inclined to be bow- legged ; dress, greenish grey jacket suit, white muffler, grey cap, woollen belt, " Palmer, Essex Regiment," worked therein, grey military shirt, had with him a dark overcoat with stripes. Absconded 19th ult. Is identical with Murphy, Case No. 4, 18th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 8 — Colchester ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences at Manningtree, 19th ult., 2 print overalls, dark blue with white spots; 2 girls' do.; 1 black skirt stitched at bottom; 1 green do., pleated — A WOMAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair dark brown; dress, dark skirt, fawn colour three- quarter length loose coat, blue and white woollen shawl, small dark trimmed hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester, or to Inspector Parrott, Mistley. 9.— Romford ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 25th ult., a brown leather purse containing £ 2 3s. 6d.; 1 silver watch chain, curb pattern, square silver locket attached, containing photographs of a lady and gentleman ; 1 pair dark tweed trousers ( nearly new), and an oxidised keyless watch— ERNEST MARSHALL, alias JARVIS, Office No. 3421- 99, Case No. 90, 18th ult., age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar left thumb; dress, dark tweed suit, dark cap, brown boots ( blacked). A native of Chelmsford. He obtained lodgings, stated he was employed in the town as carman, and absconded next morning with the above described property. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. 10.— Southend ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque, 8th October, 1909— RALPH AUGUSTUS RICHMOND, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache light, eyes grey; dress, brown mixture jacket, vest and breeches, cap, white wrapper, brown leggings. A dealer, native of Rochford. Frequents trotting meetings. Warrant issued. 11.— Southend ( County). — For embezzling 19s. lid.— EDWARD RICHIE INGLEBY COX, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue, near- sighted; dress, blue jacket and vest, grey trousers, cap, leggings A grocer's porter, native of London. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Staple Hill ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a lady's Raleigh bicycle— FANNY WOLLEN, alias WILLIAMS, age about 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, rather full face, large nose, hair brown ; wearing blackjclothing. A native of Iron Acton, Gloucester- shire. May be found in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. 14.— Stroud ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences— F. DAVIS, alias J. W. LEA, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, thin face, cheeks sunken, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, dark grey suit and over- coat, light or fawn colour cap, gold colour albert, locket attached. Stated he had just arrived from Durban, and was about to take up duties as a solicitor. See Case No. 26, 18th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. 15.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 40 and a complete set of Transvaal ( Kruger) coins from the Salvation Army Shelter, 27th ult. — THOMAS DUNSMORE, a Scotchman, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion pale, clean shaved, front teeth missing, rather bow legged, woman tattooed on one forearm, crest with Mary and true love on other ; dress, light grey overcoat, greyish suit ( riding style), may be wearing dark leggings. Has been to sea as a cook's mate. WILLIAM HOWARTH, alias THOMAS HOWARTH, age about 19, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, clean shaved, nose rather red, pimples thereon, of good address; dress, dark over- coat, suit and cap. A clerk, native of Liverpool. Both were employed at the Salvation Army Shelter. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE- 16.— Kingsclere ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, at Overton, 18th ult., a double silver albert watch chain, small round links and long links with spring in the centre, King George shilling, and large silver match box shape of watch, chased with ivy leaves, attached; single- breasted green mixture tweed vest with mauve stripes— A MAN, age 34 or 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., full bloated face, hair light, brown patch top of head, eyes prominent, top of one right finger missing; dress, dark grey jacket, black trousers, white muffler, dark plaid cap, blucher boots. He took lodgings 17th ult., stated he was employed laying a telephone cable in the neighbour- hood. Information to Supt. Jones, Kingsclere. 17.— Ringwood ( County).— For stealing at Highcliffe, 19th ult., a Rudge- Whitworth bicycle, No. 424409, free wheel, black enamelled, maker's name on head and back mudguard, supposed 26 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, plated rims, spokes rusty, new back tyre, flat handle bars, newly plated, black grips, pull up lever brakes ( back one out of repair), Rudge- Whitworth saddle and chain, new rubber pedals, black metal mudguards, oil lamp attached — GEORGE ARTHUR VIRTUE, age about 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion pale, long features, hair brown, large fleshy lump left eye- brow, " G. A. V." back of left forearm; dress, grey jacket, 2 vests ( 1 black, 1 brown), pepper and salt colour trousers with stripes, probably wearing white neckerchief, dark cap. A native of London. May seek employment at dairy or poultry farms. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mayes, Ringwood. May be found hawking butter and eggs, or seek employment as a chauffeur. Late of Hill House Farm, Little Munden, Herts. Appearance of a farmer. Warrant issued. 20.— Hitchin ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences at Royston, 3ra ult., and subsequent dates— KATE WADE, age 35 to 40. height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, long face, hair ( turning grey left side) light, eyes blue, upper lip projects, large front teeth wide apart, hairy mole on cheek; dress, long Navy blue Gibson coat, blue velvet collar and cuffs, blue skirt, cream colour blouse with black spots, black fur necklet, sable hat, brown shoes. Stated she had been employed as a cook at Cambridge, and had been ordered to take a fortnight's rest. Absconded 16th ult. Is identical with Sarah or Kate Price, Case No. 6, 18th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. 21.— Stm Albans ( County).— For stealing ( servant), 12th ult., a black skirt and jacket; 2 pairs stockings; 2 leather purses; 1 blue crepe de chine blouse; 1 navy blue skirt; a quantity of lady's underclothing, and about £ 7— MARY ORR, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes blue, walks badly, German accent, spectacles with gold colour rims; dress, black coat and skirt, black motor or Tam- o- shanter hat. She obtained a situation as cook, 11th ult., and left the following morning. Is believed identical with EMILY WATTS, Case No. 29, 21st January. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reed, County Police Office, St. Albans. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18— Heme/ Hempstead ( County).— For larceny at Great Berkhampstead, 21st ult. — ALBERT, alias JOSEPH SMITH, age 33 to 35, complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved. He travels the country, accompanied by his wife and 2 children, in a small covered van, painted yellow, picked out blue and red, " Matilda Bedlam, High Wycombe, Bucks," on plate, sells sieves, wirework, tin saucepan lids, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 19.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing a quantity of furniture about 20th September, 1909— THOMAS FREEMAN, age 35 to 40, stout build, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light, wears glasses, artificial teeth. KENT. 22.— Sandwich ( County).— For stealing, 18th ult., at Deal, a lady's green enamelled bicycle, gold lined, plated rims with green centres, 28- in. wheels, Celtic covers, 28 by Brooks' saddle, raised handle bars, front roller brake, Eadie coaster hub fitted in back wheel, rubber pedals, 25- in. frame— A MAN, age 30 to 34, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., moustache light, wearing long grey overcoat, grey cap. Information to Supt. Stone, Sandwich. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Reedley ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Foulridg6, between 29th January and 19th ult., a pair of sleeve links, & c. ( recovered), and £ 6 4s.— WILLIAM WATSON, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, small red mark on right cheek bone, hair light brown, birth mark under each eye; dress, new dark mixture suit, light grey cap, gold horseshoe pin, light lace boots. Has been employed as a platelayer on the Midland Railway. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pinnock, Reedley, near Burnley. 24.— Wig an ( County).— For stealing at Ince, 15th ult., a horse, cart, and harness ( recovered at Ashton- under- Lyne)— JOHN GARSIDE, age about 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( very thin) grey, peculiar twitch in mouth when speaking; dress, grey check suit, breeches, cycling stockings, brown leggings, cap, lace boots, grey overcoat. During the past 12 months he has represented himself as a clog sole cutter, and visited shops in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire. Warrant issued. 25.— Wigan ( County).— For stealing £ 9 at Ashton- in- Makerfield, 14th ult.— ALICE ROWE, age 15, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, of good address; dress, black dress, black three- quarter length coat, large black straw hat. May be found seeking employment at Registry Offices. A native of Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Kelly, County Police Office, Wigan. 26.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining credit by fraud during March, 1909— WILLIAM ALFRED GOLSBY, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache light, may now be clean shaved. He is an undischarged bankrupt, and by false representations obtained a large quantity of boots and shoes on credit. Absconded about 3rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 27.— Manchester ( City). — For obtaining tobacco and cigarettes to the value of £ 83 by false pretences, 6th ult.— AARON GOLD, alias GOLD- STONE, STONE and HUNTER, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, full red face, hair ( bald on top) light brown, moustache light or sandy, thick lower lip, pupil of one eye white. A Russian Jew, but speaks with strong American accent. Prior to 9th inst. he carried on business as a wholesale tobacconist, and is said to have traded in one of the above names in other towns, including London, Birmingham and Plymouth. 28 — Manchester ( City).— For stealing from their lodgings, 17th ult., 2 pocket handkerchiefs; 1 pair lady's button boots; and £ 11— CHARLES WATSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion dark, high forehead, narrow chin, hair black, moustache dark, eyes ( full) grey, bad teeth; dress, dark suit, cap with green stripes JOHN WATSON, age 14 or 15, slight build, com- plexion fresh, long thin face, pointed chin, hair very red, eyes light blue; wearing grey overcoat, steel grey jacket, cap. They took lodgings, represented that they were father and son, and that Watson senior had obtained employment as a printer ( night work), and during the temporary absence of the occupier committed larceny and decamped. 29 — Manchester ( City). — For obtaining £ 59 10s. ( by trick), 12th ult.— MAX ROSEN, alias SAM ROSEN and SMITH, a Jew, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, American accent, speaks English badly, walks erect, swings his arms, 2 gold front upper teeth, others gold filled; dress, dark coat and vest, blue serge trousers, dark brown woollen jersey, 2 rows of brown buttons in front, green woollen motor scarf, Yankee hat. He made the acquaintance of 7 Jews in London, informed them he was a cattle dealer, that he was returning to America by boat leaving Salford Docks 12th ult., promised to book their passages a id accompany them to America, obtained £ 8 10s. from each and absconded. May endeavour to leave the country. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 30.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th ult., an 18- ct. gold double curb chain ; gold seal set with red stone on one side and a green one on the other, " W. S. H." in old English letters on red stone ; silver sovereign case, chased on both sides, containing £ 4 or £ 5, attached; 3 gold studs, claw setting, coral stone in centre; 1 plain gold stud; 1 gold cuff link; 1 old- fashioned gold seal set yellow stone, large ring on top; a dark olive green striped lounge suit, double breasted jacket slit up back, 2 flap pockets outside, 5 pockets inside, " H. Davis & Son, Colwyn Bay," on tab— ROBERT YOUNG, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, narrow face, complexion pale, hair light brown, slight light moustache, D. M. and another letter tattooed one arm, wound inside left ankle, walks with slight limp; dress, dark jacket slit at back, dark blue trousers, light grey cap, long grey overcoat. May now be wearing some of the stolen property. Supposed native of Halifax, an outdoor photo- grapher. Represented the Globe Photographic Enlargement Co., 67, Coats Street, Coatbridge. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 31.— Towcester ( County).— For rape, 17th ult.— FRANK WRIGHT, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, girl left forearm, rose back of left hand, 941 S. P. 943 H. A. R. right arm, Frank Wright ( believed) left arm; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, light brown cord trousers, muffler, light cap, heavy lace boots. A farm labourer, native of Towcester. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Towcester. PEMBROKESHIRE. 32. — Fishguard ( County). — For stealing 7s. 6d.— ERNEST PLUMMER, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue, large scar right side of neck; dress, brown jacket suit with black stripes, brown cap, light boots, carried a parcel containing dark breeches and a pair of patent leather leggings. A native of Ealing. He came here from the Reformatory School at Ware. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rees Brinn, Fishguard, S. O. 33. — Pembroke Dock ( County). — For housebreaking and stealing £ 1 19s. 6d.; 1 double- breasted blue jacket; 1 pruning knife, 2 blades; 1 black leather purse— WILLIAM VOYER, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in.; complexion fair, full face, thick lips, hair light, crossed hands, heart, and W. V. back of right hand, anchor back of left hand, slightly knock- kneed; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, brown muffler and cap, strong lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued 34. — Pembroke stealing a pair of boots; Dock ( County). — For 1 blue plaid shirt; 1 pair TUESDAY, JAnUARY 79, 1910. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED.
