AZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2728. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, 8. W. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLIOE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6 s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6 s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metro- politan Police the Photographs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— 5 Division,— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— FRANK CALLAGHAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, left leg missing, uses a crutch and stick ; dress, grey tweed suit, black overcoat, bowler hat. A music hall artist, supposed a native of Portsmouth. Warrant issued. 2.— W Division « — For stealing a port- manteau and clothing ( recovered), and £ 215— GEORGE WILLIAM WEEDON, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, tiger tree with parrot and snake thereon on one arm, hand holding bunch of flowers on other; dress, green suit and knitted tie, white scarf with green ends, new black overcoat, strap at back, black hard felt hat, lace boots, may be wearing a gold albert, long links. A native of Westminster, London. Warrant issued. 3.— X Division » — For larceny ( servant)— CARRIE COLLINS, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, of good address and smart appearance; dress, black jacket and skirt, black straw hat trimmed feathers. BERKSHIRE. 4.— Wokingham ( County).— For obtaining food and lodging by false pretences, 5th inst., and stealing a green leather purse and 7s. 6d., 7th inst.— — MURPHY, age 24 to 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache light; dress, brown overcoat with 1 button only, dark striped suit and cap, white muffler, horseshoes thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Goddard, Wokingham. 5.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing a cheque book, containing blank cheques Nos. 187/ A823616- 20, on Lloyds Bank, between 8th ult. and lst inst.— WILLIAM SLYFIELD, alias SMITH, JOSEPHS, HUNT, ANDERSON, and STANLEY, age 55, height 5 ft. 9J in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, bald on top, LOVE inside left forearm, dot 2nd and 3rd left fingers, scar right side of neck, mark on face, addicted to drink, wearing grey overcoat, light cap. A gardener, native of Titehurst, Berks. He served in the Hants Con- stabulary, and was discharged in 1882. Has been convicted at Leighton Buzzard, London, Wells, Maidstone, Aylesbury, Poole, Henley and Reading, of larceny and false pretences. He calls upon tradesmen and represents that he is an agent for a well known lady in the district, orders goods, and tenders a cheque in payment signed " Russell," and asks for commission upon the order. May apply for work in gardens. 6. — Reading ( Borough). — For larceny ( lodgings)— SARAH or KATE PRICE, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., long face, hair ( turning grey on left side) light, upper lip projects, large front teeth, which are wide apart, mole on cheek with a few hairs thereon; dress, long navy blue " Gibson " coat, blue velvet collar and cuffs thereon, blue skirt, cream colour blouse, black spots, black fur necklet, round sable fur hat, small black shoes, worn down at heels. She took lodgings 20th ult., and absconded on the 27th ult. with a purse containing money. A cook, stated she had been employed at a hotel outside the railway station at Oxford for 8 months, may apply at registry offices for a similar situation. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. CHESHIRE. 7.— Liscard ( County). — For housebreaking and stealing jewellery— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, supposed light moustache; dress, dark jacket suit, black bowler hat, gloves, snow shoes. Information to Supt. McHale, Liscard. 8.— Runcorn ( County).— On Bench warrant for failing to appear at Stockton Heath Petty Sessions, 8th inst., to answer a summons for cruelty to his wife— THOMAS TAYLOR, age about 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, supposed clean shaved, flat nose, large mouth, several upper front teeth missing; dress, dark striped or blue serge suit, bow tie, hard felt hat or grey cap. A fitter, native of Walton Inferior, Warrington. Is a member of the Warrington Company Army Service Corps. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. Ennion, i Runcorn. 9.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd inst., 12 Belgian hares ( recovered)— JAMES WHALEY, age 43, height 5 ft. 4f in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin face, hair brown, eyes blue, addicted to drink. A notorious poacher, native of Macclesfield. May be found at common lodging houses. Absconded 3rd inst., had with him a parcel tied in a blue handkerchief. Warrant issued. 10.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th ult., a pair of trousers ( recovered)— JOSEPH RATCLIFFE, aged 59, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, moustache and beard ( shaggy) turning grey. A labourer, native of Macclesfield. A habitual thief, may be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Macclesfield. 11.— Stockftort ( Borough). — For burglariously- breaking and entering the Church Army Labour Home, 9th inst., and stealing a dark grey rainproof overcoat, far worn; a cheque for 15s. 9d., payable to Church Army Home by Mrs. Shimwell, Alderley Edge; 1 brown mackintosh, " W. An agent, native of Richmond, Surrey. Sentenced at South- ampton Quarter Sessions, 14th October, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 13th ult. z. b. h. 52. Has been convicted of larceny and false pretences at Winchester, Liverpool, Reading, Canterbury, Lewes, Margate, and Hastings. May be dealt with where found. ESSEX. 15.— Brentwood ( County).— For obtaining a jacket, vest, and pair of trousers, by false pretences, 14th inst.— ROBERT PERRY, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and beard ( pointed, turning grey at sides) dark brown, eyes hazel, lump over right eye, mole back of neck, just above collar, well spoken ; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark brown striped trousers, dark grey mixture overcoat, velvet collar, bowler hat, may now be wearing stolen clothing. Identical with MAN, Case No. 11, 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtain- ing a jet black cob by false pretences, 2nd inst.— GUS MARTIN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion ruddy, white pimples on face, hair light, slight moustache, rather large nose, prominent teeth, slight London accent; dress, dark suit, dark grey overcoat, dark tie, bowler hat. Appearance of a horse dealer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. KENT. 17.— Rochester ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 12th ult., a lady's silver watch, open face; 1 metal stop watch, gold coloured face; and an imitation silk handkerchief— ERNEST MARSHALL, alias JARVIS, Office No. 3421- 99, Case No. 3, current issue, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar left thumb; dress, dark suit, double- breasted vest, brown boots ( blacked and recently repaired), dark cap with green stripes, light coloured shirt, new flannel undervest. Has been convicted at Braintree, Great Bardfield, Ely, Maidenhead and Chelmsford. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Rochester. 18.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— VICTOR HALLE, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., rather stout build, hair and slight moustache brown; dress, dark suit and cap. A native of Maidstone. Is a reservist of the West Kent Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Folkestone. 19 .— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing 10s. 5d.— DENIS MCDONALD, alias HARRY RUSSELL, age 20f, height 5 ft. 3f in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark brown, butterfly back of left hand, various letters left forearm, woman's head and crossed hands right forearm, flowers and butter- fly back of right hand, scar above navel and base of sternum ; dress, brown jacket, blue trousers, light grey overcoat, black cap. Is an absentee from the Royal West Kent Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining various sums of money by false pretences— JAMES MITCHELL, alias FRED WORRAL and THOMP- SON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, long face, prominent cheek bones, rather long nose, projecting ears, hair and moustache dark, speaks slowly with refined accent, very plausible, erect bear- ing ; dress, dark blue suit, tweed cap, pink muffler. He called upon persons, stated he was an attendant at Caterham Asylum, Surrey, on a holiday, that he was short of money, and asked for loans to enable him to return to Caterham; if this plea is not successful, he claims a slight acquaintance with his victim either in connection with the Volunteers or Regulars, generally the Guards, and freely promises to repay the loan. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 21 .— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 8th inst., a lady's 18- ct. diamond and ruby half hoop ring, claw setting, 1 small diamond missing; 1 lady's 9- ct. half hoop dress ring, set ruby and brilliants, flat setting; 1 Premier Speedy bicycle, No. 251687, back pedal brake, front rim brake, Eadie coaster hub, Clipper Reflex tyres, Lucas silver- plated lamp, toe iclips, celluloid pump, and bell; 1 silver curb double albert; silver medal, gold centre, monogram " J. F. A."; 2 pairs of boots ( recovered) ; 1 dark green plaid overcoat, square cut Dockets : and a light coloured tweed cap— GEORGE WADE BUTLER, alias GEORGE WADE, JOHN HEYWORTH, and GEORGE ALEXANDER BUTLER, Office No. 856- 05, age 21, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar on nose, heart and dot left forearm; dress, brown striped suit, white shirt, rubber collar, dark bow tie, light cap, green striped socks, new hob- nailed boots. May be wearing the stolen overcoat, which is too small for him. A gardener. Left his lodgings with the above- mentioned property, early in the morning, after the occupier had gone to work. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. Advertises scenery in theatrical papers. Absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Boston. 23.— Grimsby ( Borough). — For stealing a watch, albert, and medal ( recovered)— WILLIAM CHADWICK, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair black, rather heavy moustache ( waxed at ends) and eyes dark, lower lip protrudes, hair and moustache may now lie dyed; dress, dark coat and vest, light waterproof cycling jacket, or f- length dark brownish overcoat, dark trousers with grey stripes, blue tie, bowler hat or light green cap, may bo wearing a small white silk wrapper, of shabby appearance, sometimes carries a knotted cane with horn handle. A gardener or antique dealer. He takes lodgings, calls upon antique dealers, offers small antique articles for sale, and requests to be allowed to purchase articles for them on commission. Had in his possession a character from an antique dealer at Salford. Information to the Chief Constable, Grimsby. LINCOLNSHIRE. 22 — Boston ( Borough). For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— H. P. DA\, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, thin face, hair ( supposed bald patch back of left ear) grey, may have slight moustache, bad teeth; dress, black lounge jacket with slate colour buttons, grey trousers and vest with black stripes, blue and white check tie, gold horseshoe pin, may be wearing a long black Newmarket overcoat, boots nearly new, may have " Public Benefit " on tab. A theatrical scene painter. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 24.— Kettering ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) £ 3 — WILLIAM ERNEST GISSING, alias CHARLES GREEN, age 37, height 5 ft. 5| in., com- plexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, 2 scars back crown of head, scar bridge of nose, tattooed faint dots back left forearm ; wearing old dark clothes and cap. A native of Yarmouth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hooper, Kettering. NOR THUMBERLA ND. 25.— Berwick- on- Tweed ( Borough).— For stealing a brown leather bag, 22 in. long, catch on top broken— ALFRED HYLTON, age about 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., thin face, clean shaved, hair black, long sharp nose, sore feet, walks badly; dress, light check jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, greenish over- coat with dark squares, grey or green cap, light lace boots. He rented a shop, stated he was an agent for a London firm, engaged a person to canvass and collect money, stated the goods would be forwarded by rail. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Berwick- on- Tweed. OXFORDSHIRE. 26,— Caversham ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 9th inst.— F. W. LEA, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; wearing dark green overcoat, black bowler hat, patent leather boots. Stated he was a clerk, had just arrived from Durban, and obtained £ 4 to pay the charges on his luggage. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Timms, Caversham. S TA FFORDSHIRE. 21.— Tettenhall ( County).— For burglary at Shareshill, 3rd inst.— FREDERICK WILLIAM WOOLLEY, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, oval face, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, dark trousers and cap, red muffler, strong lace boots. A collier or labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Tettenhall. SURREY. 28.— Woking ( County).— For failing to comply with the conditions while a probationer under the Probation of Offenders' Act ( original charge bicycle stealing)— JAMES SMITH, age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, round face, hair dark brown, slight moustache, eyes grey, tombstone " In memory of my dear sister " thereon, scar on forehead; dress, mixture suit ( Army pattern), cap, lace boots, military shirt. A cook. Was discharged from the Royal Artillery. May endeavour to rejoin. Warrant issued. 29. — Woking ( County). — For embezzling 10s. 8d.— FRANK STEVENS, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full red face, hair and moustache brown, wearing a striped overcoat, dark cap. A butcher, native of South- borough, Kent. Absconded 28th December last. Warrant issued. 30.— Woking ( County).— For non- payment of £ 1 13s. 8d. bastardy arrears— THOMAS GODDARD, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion pale, full face, hair and eyes brown, moustache dark brown, very deaf, slight impediment in speech.
