All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. IN most cases in which Licence- holders and Supervisees residing in the Provinces fail to report themselves and whose arrest is consequently desired, the Editor is requested to insert the particulers in the GAZETTE. Cannot speak English. 2.— R Division » — For obtaining £ 12 by false pretences— WILLIAM ERNEST LAWTON, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion pale, full round face, hair black ( bushy), clean shaved, space between middle uppor teeth ; dress, blue over- coat with velvet collar, grey jacket and trousers, black velvet cord vest, large tie with safety pin, black hard felt hat, brown lace boots, sometimes wears brown knicker suit and fawn colour mackintosh, double albert, and ring with photograph of lady thereon. He advertised for a bioscope operator and attendant, business taught, and required a premium of £ 12, obtained several sums, representing he had obtained the lease of premises and was opening a cinemato- graph show. Warrant issued. 3.— IV Division>— For stealing, 17th inst., from his lodgings, a lady's gold watch, open face, maker " Samuels " stamped inside case ; 1 do. silver watch; 1 silver watch; 1 silver single curb albert; 1 gold horseshoe pin, 5 small diamonds in black leather case; 1 lady's 18- ct. gold dress ring, set ruby and 2 diamonds; 1 black handle razor; 1 grey mixture overcoat, " Capital and Labour " on tab ; 1 pair brown boots— WILLIAM POWELL, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, full face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, tattooed both arms ; dress, dark striped jacket suit, grey mixture overcoat, black tie with green stripes, green cap, brown lace boots. A native of Reading. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 250, E. LIDDLE, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- plexion pale, hair ( long) dark brown, moustache brown ( waxed at ends), eyes blue, oval face, has a habit of holding moustache with one hand and wiping it with handkerchief; dress, navy blue overcoat ( velvet collar), dark suit, black bowler hat. A clerk, late of Algernon Road, Lewisham. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 5.— For stealing £ 99 6s. 5£ d., 11th inst.— HERBERT JORDAN, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, dragon, lion, Indian with knife, bull dog, Union Jack, eagle, snake and Japanese woman tattooed on arms, eagle, snake and dragon on chest; dress, dark brown jacket suit, fawn colour mackintosh, hard felt hat. A clerk, native of London. Has in his possession 10 £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. 57168 to 77 inclusive, dated 14th September, 1908. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. ANGLESEY. 6.— Holyhead ( County).— For deserting his wife and children leaving them chargeable to the Anglesey Union, THOMAS JONES alias HUGHES, age 41, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache dark brown, eyes ( supposed) brown. A labourer, native of Llangefni. See Case No. 8, lst October, 1909. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Holyhead. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Biggleswade ( County).— For stealing a quantitv of rugs, capes, leggings, & c. ( recovered)— CHARLES PRICE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown. Travels the country repairing umbrellas, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tatman, Biggleswade. CA MB RIDGES HIRE. 8.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, 19th inst.— EDWARD MCDONALD ( supposed false), age 45 to 48, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, moustache ginger, of military appearance; wearing dark blue jacket and vest, white neckerchief, brown tweed cap, lace boots, South African war medal ribbon on vest. Accompanied by a girl age about 15, hair cut short; wearing black sailor hat and long woollen scarf. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. 9.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 13th inst., a dark grey overcoat with green stripes, 2 flap pockets outside, 1 inside pocket— GEORGE HOWARD ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, complexion pale, hair and pointed beard dark, heavy moustache, lump about the size of a walnut over right eye; dress, dark 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT—( continued). brown suit, trousers darker than jacket and vest, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Stated he was employed by a window cleaning company and was opening a branch here, also stated that he had been employed by the Nelson Tea Company, and that he was a native of Tunbridge. Warrant issued. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 6th and 11th inst.—- JAMES WEBB, age 60, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair and moustache grey, clipped close; dress, slate colour overcoat, dark trousers, black hat, neckerchief, old brown leggings, lace boots. A rag and bone gatherer. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 11.— Braxton ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, at Newton, 20th inst.— — TAYLOR, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark; wearing dark overcoat, hard felt hat, carried an umbrella. He presented a book, purporting to be headed by the Yicar of St. Oswalds, Chester, authorizing him to collect subscriptions on behalf of a widow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hicks, Broxton. 12.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Bramhall, 19th inst., a new dark grey jacket suit with green stripes; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, plain white dial, chased back, floral design, long fine gold chain and 2 watch keys attached; 1 silver penknife, 2 blades, ring one end, dent in handle : 1 old fawn colour mackintosh — REGINALD SUMMERS, age 16 to 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket, black trousers, dark check muffler, dark grey cap, old lace boots. A farm labourer, native of Oswestry. He deserted from the Man- chester Regiment, at Ashton- under- Lyne, 2nd inst. May endeavour to join the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 13.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings 12 th inst, a gold oval locket, chased, photograph of woman inside, short neck chain attached, 22- ct. gold; 1 gold cased curb bracelet, thick links; 1 lady's gold dress ring, 18- ct., set blue stone and 2 or 3 pearls ; 1 pair round ear drops, green stones, mounted in silver; 1 pair small do. round paste stones, silver mounted; 1 pair gold do. round, one slightly bent; 1 gold crescent brooch, set white naste stones; 1 gold bar brooch ; 1 small metal button hook and £ 2 9s. WILLIAM BROWN, age 50 to 60, height i5 ft. 5 or 6in., good build stoops slightly, oomplexion fresh, rather heavy features, hair dark brown and heavy moustache turning grey; dress dark grey jacket suit, grey and black three- quarter length overcoat, grey cap, brown boots, carried a small black hand bag. Represented himself to be an antique furniture dealer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Macclesfield. DERBYSHIRE. 14.— Matlock ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 7s. l£ d., 19th inst.— THOMAS HOLMES, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes supposed dark, round face, shuffling gait ; dress, dark overcoat, vest, and trousers, black hard hat. A gardener or labourer, native of Brailsford. He attends Church Army missions. Supposed previously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Clarke, Matlock. DORSETSHIRE. 15.— Wimborne ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 15s. 6d. by false pretences— JAMES HENDRIE, a Scotchman, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in. complexion fair, hair brown, bad teeth, inclined to be bow legged; dress brown knicker suit ( much worn) and cap. Is fo. iJ of dancing and addicted to drink. A dairyman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ricketts, Wimborne. ESSEX. 16.— Grays ( County). — For embezzlement, DAVID KEMP, age 35 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion pale, hair light ( bunched in front), thin face, very bad teeth ( irregular and much discoloured), walks with very short quick steps; usually wears brown mackintosh and leggings. A grocers assistant, native of Grays, Essex. Warrant issued Information to Inspector Mules, Grays. 17.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th inst., a gold signet ring, plain top ; a gold albert ( recovered), and £\ 17s.— ALBERT PORTER, T H E POLICE GAZETTE. age 24 to 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, eyes believed blue ( sunken), very bad teeth; dress, brown jacket and vest, green trousers with red stripes, white sweater with turn- down collar, brown cap and boots. Has served in the Bedfordshire Regiment, and was dis- charged in June last on conviction by civil power at Poole, Dorset. May endeavour to re- enlist. Also believed wanted at Andover, Hants. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18 — Staple Hill ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 2 silver watches, 22nd November, 1909— JOHN EDWARD COLLINGS, age 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown turning grey, whiskers and moustache, eyes hazel, scar outside right forearm, over right eye, mole right cheek. A native of Brighton. Previously convicted of similar offences at Hove, Brighton and Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill HAMPSHIRE. 19 — Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 18 3s. 3d., 4th inst.— ERNEST HERBERT SWEET, alias ERNEST HERBERT SCOTT HERBERT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. llf in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) black, large Roman nose ; dress, blue jacket and trousers, black and white knitted vest, grey cap, usually wears a brown Inverness coat. A clerk. Was employed as Liberal agent for Alton district, entrusted with the above amount and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 20.— Andover ( County).— For stealing 30s. from his lodgings— ALBERT PORTER, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue ; dress, brown coat, grey trousers, white muffler, black patent leather shoes. A native of St. John's, Dorset. Was discharged from the Bedford Regiment in June last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowles, Andover. 21.— Fareham ( County).— For burglary and stealing a cash box; 12s. Id., and a number of old coins— A MAN, height about 5 ft. 8 in.; supposed wearing a dark sweater, slouch hat, plain boots. 22.— Fareham ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Havant Union—- JOHN COLLINS, age 54, height 5 ft. 3£ in., com- plexion fair, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, dark suit, cap, may be wearing a white muffler. A native of Havant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. 23.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining a suit of clothes by false pretences, 13th inst.— ALDOUS, alias JONES, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark, scar under left eye, one finger missing; dress, dark blue or black suit, dark skull cap. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 24.— Hereford ( County).— For stealing, at Longtown, 18th inst., a silver English lever watch, open face, seconds hand missing— A MAN, age 19, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in, complexion fresh, hair dark, small light moustache ; dress, dark coat and vest, cord breeches, dark cap, leggings. Has been an inmate of an Industrial School. Tramps the country and seeks work at farms. A native of London. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. HER TFORDSHIRE. 5.— Ware ( County).— For stealing a Post Office Savings Bank Book, No. 6765, issued at Ware to Danzy Joseph Hawkes, and 1 pair brown kid gloves with woollen tops HARVEY ( supposed false), age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, blotchy face, square jaws, clean shaved ; dress, dark striped overcoat, vertical pockets, turned back cuffs, dark lining, " W. S. Green, Outfitter, St. Albans," inside collar, blue serge jacket and trousers, light drab colour vest, green grey cap, violet tie, brown boots. He obtained lodgings by stating he was employed at the railway station as a goods clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Ware. 26.— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings) — ARTHUR DARE WOOD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache very dark; wearing dark clothes and cap, pink muffler. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 1910. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report, licence- holder EDWARD KELLY, alias SMITH, office No. 683- 02, age 55, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes dark blue ( partially blind left), scar on nose, left elbow and 3rd left finger, a native of Bolton. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 13th February, 1904, to 7 years penal servitude for arson. Licensed 9th ult. S. e. 229. May be dealt with where found. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 28.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For larceny ( lodgings)— FREDERICK CAMERON, age 23, height 6 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, thin face, only one upper tooth; dress, grey jacket, brown cardigan do., cord trousers, white muffler, fawn colour overcoat and cap, heavy boots. A stone mason. Absconded 17th inst. Supposed tramping the country. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29.— Sleaford ( County).— For stealing, at Brauncewell, 25th December, 1909, a razor, black handle, in red ease, and a small wash- leather bag containing 3 half- sovereigns— DICK HARDMAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown; dress, dark mixture jacket and vest, dark trousers with broad green stripes, long dark overcoat, red or pink knitted tie, dark cap, black leather leggings fastened with buttons, strong lace boots. A labourer, supposed a native of Norwich. Stated he had worked in nursery gardens. May seek employment on farms. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edgley, Sleaford. SOMERSETSHIRE. 30.— Somerton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Langport Union— ERNEST SIDNEY BENNETT, ago 25, height about 5 ft. in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, small mole left side of face, two front upper teeth missing; dress, usually navy blue suit and cap. A navvy, native of Croydon, Surrey. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the Guardians of the Langport Union for the arrest of Bennett. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. STIRLINGSHIRE. 31.— Stirling ( Burgh).— For housebreaking, 14th inst., and stealing a blue serge suit, jacket square cut, double- breasted vest, two side pockets and one hip pocket in trousers; 1 dark jacket and vest, usual pockets, well worn; 1 blue melton overcoat, with black velvet collar, dark lining, usual pockets, well worn; 1 dark grey tweed overcoat, black lining, usual pockets; 1 pair of Lome shoes, size 9, almost new, fancy toecaps; 1 silver lever watch, No. 12430, white dial, black chapters, steel hands, ' Poole, London," on works; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, white dial, black chapters, steel hands; 3 £ 1 notes and a half sovereign — ROBERT M'REYNOLDS, S. C. R., No. 1235/ 09, age 19 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7$ in., complexion fresh, hair ( short) dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown. A labourer, native of Partick. Ship in circle over ribbon, " Homeward bound," clasped hands over heart, and other tattoo marks on arms, & c.; dress, blue jackct and vest, vertical handkerchief pocket in jacket, dark tweed trousers, dark peak cap, dark blue muffler, light lace boots, wore a red- flowered waist- belt. Has served in the 1st Batt. A. and S. Highlanders, and in the 4th Battalion at Paisley. Was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment at Ayr, on 6th September, 1909; also at Sheriff Court, Glasgow, on 15th April, 1909, for housebreaking, & c., and sentenced to 60 days hard labour. He left Stirling 15th inst., accompanied by A MAN, age about 20, height 5 ft., slight build, thin pale face, slight moustache light; dress, black jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, dark peak cap, dark muffler with yellow flowers. Both spoke with Glasgow accent. Information to the Chief Constable, Burgh Police Chambers, Stirling. SUFFOLK ( East). 32.— Lowestoft ( County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque, a bay mare, described in Case No. 48, 21st inst.— THOMAS ALEXANDER SYRES, alias THOMAS HARRIS, Office No. S 89458, Case Nos. 24, 28th February, 1908, and 4, 18th October, 1907, age 42, height 5 ft. 6} in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, lost right leg, and when attending sales, & c., usually wears an artificial one, but after accomplishing his ohjeot, takes train to another town, discards the artificial limb, and uses a crutch and walking stick. May be T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 Circular 73, Figure 15), age 47, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair ( receding from temples) brown, eyes hazel, scar left thumb and back of neck, modulates his voice and has a habit of raising his eyebrows when conversing, is fond of betting; dress, usually jacket suit and bowler hat. examine the telephone wires, or to inspect the water or gas pipes, and under some pretext manages to be left to himself, when he at once utilises the occasion to steal valuable jewellery. Sentenced at North London Sesssions, 21st May, 1901, to 4 years penal servitude for stealing jewellery. tweed cap, gentlemanly appearance. A native of Australia.
