THEE GAZETT PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2700. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. i. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. . . 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6.?. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 10 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9 The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the " act, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinari/ rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 7— X Division. — For obtaining money by false^ pretences, 22nd ult.— ADA COCKS, alias LILY BARRY, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes ( large) bluish- grey; dress, brown ° oat, skirt, and tam o'shanter. She obtains from registry offices the names of persons requiring a cook general, calls upon each, gives false references and addresses, then obtains money for the purpose of paying her railway fare. W. clean grey CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For stealing £ 20 6s. 3d., 1 Postal Order for 3s. 6d., and 2 cheques ( 1 for £ 4 17s. 5d., and 1 for £ 3 5s.) — FRED E. PAGE, age 14 years and 11 months ( looks older), height 5 ft., well built, complexion ruddy, hair black, eyes dark brown, of smart appearance; dress, brown jacket and vest, black trousers and cap, green tie. A native of Carragaline, Cork. Has served 12 years in the 1st Life Guards. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians, Windsor Union, for the arrest of Coakley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearman, Slough. 13.— Birkenhead ( County).— For obtaining a number of geese and ducks by false pretences— WM. BUCKLEY, age about 36, height 5 ft., a hunchback, complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, eyes brown, 2nd left finger missing; dress, green suit and cap, strong lace boots. A farm labourer. Murder. £ WO Reward. 14.— Dukinfield ( County).— For murder, 1st inst.— A MAN, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 to 8 in., slight build, complexion pale or sallow, thin features, hair and very slight moustache light ; dress, dark serge or tweed clothing, brownish mixture cap, may have cuts on face and hands and blood stains on clothing. Description of a revolver which was taken from him:— Foreign make, 5 chambers, very cheap, silver plated, several indentations left side of barrel, length 6 in., barrel 2 in., trigger spring broken, cap of ramrod missing, small ring at end of stock, takes " 320 central fire cartridge, " The American Bullock " engraved on revolving chamber. The above reward will be paid by the Chief Constable of Cheshire, Chester, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person who committed the murder. ESSEX. 15-— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing a motor bicycle, 3rd inst., at Billericay ( recovered)— FRANK ROWLINGSON, alias BRADDY, age 22, height 5 ft. 4^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, scar left side of forehead ; dress, dark tweed or serge jacket suit and cap, coloured neckerchief, blucher boots, army shirt, pants and socks, stamped A. S. C. No. 27861. A labourer, native of South Weald, Essex. Is a deserter from the Army Service Corps, Aldershot, since 31st ult. Before joining the army he was employed by cattle dealers in Cardiganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued). 18.— Swansea ( Borough).— For stealing a lady's 18- ct. buckle ring, a painter's blow lamp, and £ 7 10s.— WILLIAM O'DOWDA, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair and moustache brown; dress, light fawn colour three- quarter- length coat, blue trousers, short sighted, wears glasses, stated he had served in the Army and was discharged owing to defective sight. Will probably seek employment as wireman or electrician. May be found in company of bookmakers. SUSIE O'DOWDA, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion sallow, full round face, eyes blue, wearing black clothing. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GL DUCES TERSHIRE. 19.,— Cheltenham ( County).— For absconding from his bail at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, 20th ult., charged with larceny— FRANCIS HENRY PONTING, Office No. 1136- 09, age 20, height 5 ft. . 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( weak) brown, several blue marks left forearm, scar corner left eye, 2 hairy moles and small brown patch right of neck. A native of Cheltenham. Has been con- victed at Gloucester Quarter Sessions and Andover. May be found in common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 20.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences between 22nd and 27th ult.— SIDNEY MURRAY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion, moustache and heavy eyebrows dark, left forefinger deformed or part missing; dress, blue suit, peak cap with gold braid and a white square with " W" thereon. Stated he was the captain of a ship coaling at Cardiff. Had in his possession a green enamelled bicycle, which he tried to sell. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Aldershot ( County).— For leaving his 3 children chargeable to the Farnham Union, 30th December, 1907— JOHN TOWNSEND, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, scar 3rd left finger. A labourer, native of Aldershot, has served in the navy. Appearance of a seaman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. ( Arrested, see Case No. 120). 24.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing 17th ult., a bicycle, free wheel, black enamelled, 28- in. frame and wheels, flat handle- bars, brown grips with black tips ( right missing), rim brakes, rat- trap pedals, saddle covered with brown and grey cloth, silver plated bell, oil lamp repaired at top with zinc, pump and tool bag attached— A MAN, age 53, height 5 ft. 8| in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, green striped suit, white muffler, green cap, nailed boots. A mason, native of Bourne- mouth. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 25.— Cosport ( County).— For obtaining £ 4 by false pretences, 2nd inst.— GEORGE JACKSON, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair brown, supposed clean shaved ; dress, navy blue serge suit, dark cap, dark tie, soft collar. Appearance of a seafaring man. He calls upon military officers, and represents that he has served in their regiment as a non- commissioned officer, also calls upon naval officers. Warrant issued. Cottle, Gosport. 26 — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, also larceny— JACK GIBBS, alias JOHN SKALTON, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, small features, hair and slight moustache dark ( may be clean shaved), eyes brown; dress, dark tweed jacket, dark trousers, black alpaca vest, dark cap, black and red scarf, heavy boots cut at tops. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Bury ( County).— For office- breaking, 5th inst., and larceny— A MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, full face, hair and short moustache dark; dress, dark suit, large peak cap, trousers and jacket torn, and may have a lacerated wound on left leg and require medical attention. He left behind a brown mackintosh and his left shoe. 29.— Bury ( County).— For stealing, at Radcliffe, between 29th September and 10th ult., a large quantity of builders' tools— JAMES HAYES, alias BURKE or BOOKER, age 50, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, very red cheeks and nose, hair brown, turning grey. A bricksetter's labourer. Addicted to drink. Warrant issued. 30.— Bury ( County).— For stealing, at Radclift'e, a suit of clothes, 1 mackintosh, 1 shirt, 2 collars, and a pair of stockings— JOHN WILLIAM CORLESS, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair j and moustache dark brown, eyes brown. A collier. Is a reservist of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Native of Burnley. ERNEST COWGILL, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown. Has j served in the Navy. A native of Burnley. Noblett, Bury. 31.-— old Trafford ( County).— For failing to surrender to bail on a charge of larceny at Salford Hundred Sessions 25th ult.— LOUIS BRENSTEIN, age 24, height 5 ft. 3^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, half third finger right hand missing. A Russian Jew. Left Manchester at the end of September accompanied by his wife and child, age about 2. A trade broker. Has resided in London and Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. STRINGER, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) and moustache brown, eyes light blue, inclined to stammer; dress, dark tweed knicker suit, fawn colour mackintosh, red lining, black leather leggings, round ! soft tweed cap. A gardener, native of Chorley. Sentenced at Lancashire Assizes, 6th July, 1905, to 5 years penal servitude for arson, & c. Licensed 7th April, 1909. f. 303. May be dealt with where found. MONTGOMER YSHIRE. 35.— Newtown ( County). — For obtaining lodgings by false pretences at temperance hotels— — ARNOLD, age about 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair ( thick) brown, clean shaved, of smart appearance; dress, black jacket and trousers, brown vest, with brass buttons, lion stamped thereon, dark tie, light green cap, Derby pattern boots. He represented himself as an advance agent to a dramatic company, advertised in local papers, also takes public halls for the entertainment, then decamps. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 36.— Peterborough ( City).— For obtaining a kit bag by a worthless cheque on the London and South- Western Bank, London — ARTHUR FEIGHERY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair black, moustache light brown, eyes grey, slight Irish accent, a clerk, of smart appearance. Also wanted on warrant by City of London Police. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Peterborough. OXFORDSHIRE. 37. Oxford ( County).- For stealing ( bailee) £ 16 10s., 18th September last— HORACE HENRY WILLIAMS, age 29, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, may now be clean shaved, eyes blue, linear scar I in. long top of forehead, " Mabel" tattooed calf right leg, woman's head left arm; dress, supposed dark plaid suit, hard felt hat. An Army Reservist, a painter and sign writer, last heard of in Newington Butts, stayed at a Rowton House. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Oxford. PEMBROKESHIRE. 38.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County). For stealing ( servant) a brown suit, jacket double breasted, with dark stripe about 2 in. wide; 1 slate colour flannel shirt; 1 pair of boots, pointed toes; and £ 4 17s. 4^ 1— WILLIAM HENRY ARTHUR CARTER CHURCHILL, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, coal scar under chin, round scar right leg; wearing the stolen clothing. A native of King's Cross, London. Is a deserter from the Welsh Regiment, and was em- ployed as an officer's servant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thomas, Pembroke Dock. S TA FFORDSHIRE. 39.— Brierley Hill ( County).-- For stealing a brown leather bag; 2 pairs pants ; 1 pair gold cuff links, engraved, with chain attachments, and a purse with 4 compartments containing 18s.— JACK EDWARDS ( supposed false), age about - 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, wore gold rimmed glasses of bluish colour, gold ring set 3 white stones on left little finger; dress, dark overcoat, black silk lining, quilted across shoulders, grey jacket slit in centre, green knitted woollen vest with white spots, brass buttons, grey trousers, black hard felt hat or soft green hat, tan colour shoes. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 42, 5th inst. Warrant issued. 40— Brierley Hill ( County).— For stealing 9s. from a child in the street— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion very dark, round face, hair black; dress, long dark blue coat, black skirt, white sailor hat with black band. Information to Supt. Johnson, Brierley Hill. STIRLINGSHIRE. 41.— Falkirk ( County).— For burglary ( false keys), 3 charges— PATRICK • O'NEIL, alias THOMAS SMITH, S. C. R. 1101- 07, age 20, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) black, eyes hazel; dress, blue or dark jacket and vest, brown trousers, dark cap, light muffler, old lace boots. Suffers from rheumatism, and is occasionally admitted to workhouse infirmaries. Liberated on licence in August last after serving 6 months imprisonment for housebreaking. SUSSEX ( East). 42.— Uokfield ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 27th ult., a light chestnut mare, aged, 17 hands, clean legs, good feet, shod rather short, very large head, rough full mane and tail, two upper teeth missing— G. BROWN, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown ; wearing black coat, New York make, cuffs to sleeves recently repaired, greenish check overcoat, hard felt hat, brown boots. DERBYSHIRE. 81.— Renishaw ( County).— Between 8 and ' 10.40 p. m., 16th ult., a dwelling- house at Stubley, : near Dronfield, was burglariously entered, and Isaac Biggin, the occupier, age 82, violently assaulted and ; left unconscious, since died. The offender removed ; a large wooden box containing money, deeds and other documents to the yard, where it was broken to | pieces, and money stolen.— Suspicion is attached to A MAN, age 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, weight about 10 stones, complexion pale, long thin features, hair and moustache ( rather long) dark brown, aquiline nose; dress, dark jacket suit with light narrow stripes, dark cap and neckerchief, light lace boots, of shabby appearance.
