Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue toth^ lZ GiZETTE> * ik€ y ^ ^^ t0 to be talc en upon them by Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified J ^ 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditio** must be clearly stated J 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost oj 8s per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s ver photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. J Every announcement if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, citrj or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGTJLATIOIffS. ~ 77 ... 9. 6. nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and " ffar as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement jor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceeaings which may result from such publication 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, Either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT J Criminal Investigation De- partment.,— For obtaining a banker's cheque for =£ 500 by false pretences 1st July, 1901— ARTHUR ELLIS, alias PHILPOT, age about 30, height 6 ft., very slight build, complexion inclined to ruddy, hard features, high cheek bones, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes brown, long thin fingers, upright, but a little over at knees, of somewhat pugnacious appearance, well dressed. A native of London. Warrant issued. 2— Convict Supervision Office.— For failing to report— Licence Holder GEORGE STANLEY, alias STANLEY GEORGE HATCH, Office No. 3578- 02, age 37, height 5 ft. 4£ in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A native of Norfolk Sentenced at the Central Criminal Court, 23rd July, 1906, to 4 years penal servitude for forgery. Licensed 23rd ult. g 405. He reported in London 26 th ult. his intention of proceeding to Great Yarmouth, at which place he failed to report. His arrest is also sought for larceny. 3.-— R Division. — For embezzlement— RICHARD KIMMIS, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, blotchy face, eczema scars on arms ; dress, dark grey jacket, blue vest and trousers, green shirt and cap with large peak, blue and white tie, lace boots. A butcher's assistant, native of Woolwich. Warrant issued. 4.— x Division.— For stealing a carpet and a water can, 10th inst.— RHODA SMITH, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, black and white jacket, 2 breast pockets, black skirt, apron and hat. FLO SMITH, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, pregnant; dress, black dress, crape hat trimmed 2 large feathers; a native of Leicester. CLARA SMITH, nee FLETCHER, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, blue striped blouse, black satin apron, white hat with black band, wearing earrings made of half sovereigns. A native of Sparkhill, Birmingham. Travelling hawkers. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BUG KING HA MS HI RE. 5.— Aylesbury ( Comty).— For stealing, loth inst., 2 trowels, makers " Joseph Tyrzach & Sons, Sheffield," on blades; 1 lathing hammer; 3 white- wash brushes; and a pair of white overalls— WILLIAM CHANDLER, alias WILLIAM CHAL- LENGER, age 47, height 5 ft. in., complexion very dark, hair brown, moustache turning grey, eyes light hazel, mole right cheek, scar right side of forehead; dress, grey jacket and vest, blue trousers. A tramping plasterer. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Aylesbury. CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 6.— Linton { County).— For stealing ( bailee), 31st ult., a Royal Hazlewood bicycle, 26- in. frame, nearly new, Dunlop tyres, plated rims, green enamelled, gilt lined, Brooks' 75 saddle, i- in. pitch roller chain, rubber pedals, gear 76— HARRY HYPKISS, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., clean shaved, upper teeth missing; dress, grey jacket, dark vest, dark grey cycling knickers, grey stockings, red tie with black stripes, black hard hat, shoes. Stated he had been employed as a clerk in London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stapleton, Linton. CA RDIGA NSHIRE. 7.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For stealing a purse containing £ 21 0s. 4d. JONES, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, rather high cheek bones, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes ( supposed brown); dress, grey jacket suit, with dark stripes, red tie, green cap, black canvas shoes. Supposed a native of Carmarthenshire. Stated he had served 6 months in the Special Reserve, and produced an identity certificate. He left behind a new Rudge- Whitworth bicycle, No. 27, " Crescent road racer, 525618," on front bar ( supposed stolen). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Aberystwyth. ESSEX. 8 — Brentwood ( County).— For obtaining, 20th inst., by a worthless cheque, drawn on the London and South Western Bank, Mile End Branch, Whitechapel, a Welsh bred bright bay mare, aged, 14 hands 3 in., white blaze down face, 2 or 3 white saddle marks, short mane ( rubbed off near ears) and tail, slightly over in front, good action, in fair con- dition, a Cee spring Ralli car ( polished walnut), rubber tyres, " Borwood, Ipswich," on wheel caps, in good condition, and a set of black leather harness, brass mounts, crest " stag" on blinkers ( since recovered)— ERNEST COOPER, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved ; dress, grey suit, drab covert coat, dark green soft hat, carried a mackintosh Supposed a native of London. He presented a card with " Ernest Cooper, Agra Place, Hackney, N. E, Jobmaster and Cab Proprietor," thereon. Is identical with man, Case No. 4, 20th inst. Was accompanied by a man, age 45 to 50. Warrant issued. < d — Brentwood ( County).— For stealing at Pilgrims Hatch, South Weald, 19th inst., 2 postal orders ( 1 for 20s„ 1 for 10s„ No. 1 over 50, 742985 or 87, both have " Coxtie Green, Brentwood, 19th August, 1909," stamped thereon); 1 small nickel plated carriage clock, keyless, open face, glass cracked centre of face, Swiss make, " Drew &' Co. Piccadilly, on dial, in a patent leather case- A MAN, age 38 to 40 height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and eyes brown, clean shaved; dress, dark jacket suit, panama hat with black band. Had with him a bicycle. Identical with man, Case No. 13,6th inst. T1 x , Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. 10.— Colchester ( County).— For stealing at Harwich, 14th inst., a new No. 3 Roadster Challenge bicycle, 24 in. frame, Scott's tyres, free wheel, roller brakes, rubber pedals, No. 92876— COOPER, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., good build, complexion sallow, hair and eyes brown; dress, dark blue diagonal suit, white muffler, dark cap. Supposed a seaman, native of Harwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers,'. Colchester, or to the Inspector in charge, Harwich. 11.— Romford ( County).— For stealing, at Cranham, 18th inst., a bicycle, enamelled green, " Elswick" transfer on head, usual parts plated, dropped frame, 2 small bars from gear wheel to head, inverted lever front brake ( broken), back pedalling brake, 1 pedal crank loose, old rusty bell, plated lamps, back mud- guard bent slightly, leather tool bag— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stiff build, complexion fresh, sharp features, hair brown, clean shaved; dress, brown suit, light patch on seat of trousers, dark cap, old lace boots. A labourer. Will probably dispose of the machine and'seek employment on farms. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 14:.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 5, 21st inst. — JESSE SHUBERT,' age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in, slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, long straight nose ; dress, dark coat and vest, dirty drab trousers, stitched round bottoms, large grey cap, white silk muffler, heavy boots, fancy uppers. London accent. A native of Hounslow. May be found with shows or roundabouts or hawking fruit. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 15.— A Idershot ( County).— For embezzling £ 15, 16th inst.— STANLEY HERBERT BULLETT, 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued.).— age] 21, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, erect bearing; dress, dark lounge suit, dark tie, light cap, carried a light overcoat. A clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 1 Southampton ( Borough).— For larceny ( lodgings)— ELIZABETH KEMP, age 56, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey; dress, black skirt, fawn colour three- quarter length jacket, toque with black and white feathers on left side, flower on right side. Warrant issued. 17 — Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a £ 5 Bank of England note— JANE ROOD, age 65, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, hair grey, several front upper teeth and pupil of left eye missing; dress, black skirt, plaid shawl, old fashioned bonnet. Is suffering from a wound in one leg, and may be found at a hospital. Warrant issued. 18.— Southampton ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JOSEPH JENNINGS, alias GEORGE JENNINGS, Office No. 1394- 01, age 35, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) and eyes brown, several scars on face, nose has been broken, " W. C." clasped hands and anchor right forearm, " W. C." clasped hands and heart right wrist, cross, heart, anchor, " E. W." left forearm, dot web left thumb. A fireman, native of Liverpool. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 26th November, 1903, to 5 years penal servitude for wounding. Liberated on 2nd licence 16th June last, which expires 5th October, 1909. d. 603. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing a bag of wool ( recovered)— JOSEPH WILD, alias JACK, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes ( very glaring) grey, supposed burn scar left forearm; dress, black jacket, dark grey trousers, cap, muffler, boots much too large. Supposed a native of Oldbridge, Staff's. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thomas, Ledbury. HER TFORDSHIRE. 20.— Hatfidd ( County).— Being concerned with Charles Bordell ( in custody) in stealing 4 ducks, 15th inst.— ARTHUR COOK, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache turning grey; dress, dark jacket and vest, white cord trousers, navy blue cap. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. 21.— Hatfield ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings 7s.- WATSON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, slightly freckled, hair and moustache light; dress, navy blue suit, dark tie, dark green cap. KENT. 22.— Seabrook ( County).— For failing to appear at Quarter Sessions, charged with lamb steal- ing— GEORGE WOOD, alias JOHN HARRIS and BEALE, age 55, height 5 ft. 7^ in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey; wear- ing old cord trousers, sometimes a black overcoat and cap. A native of Brookland, Kent. May be found at a workhouse infirmary. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollands, Seabrook. 23.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For obtaining a light bay mare, 14 hands 2 in., age 5, 3 white legs, slight white mark down face, short tail, cut scars front legs, by a worthless cheque on the London and South Western Bank, Mile End branch, 19th inst.— W. MASON, age 35 to 40, complexion fair, clean shaved, scar from cut on cheek or over eye; dress, grey suit, black hard felt hat, strong boots ( wide welts). Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Bury ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) £ 1 10s. and for failing to report— Licence- holder JAMES STEWART, alias STUART and JACK SMITH, Office No. 2459- 02, age 27, height 5 ft. 3| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar bridge of nose, " S.," anchor and " J." left forearm, cut scars second left finger; dress, grey suit, black bowler hat, black overcoat with velvet collar, brown button boots. A shoemaker, native of Bury, but speaks with south country accent. A notorious cattle, horse, and fowl stealer; uses the railway for the removal of the proceeds of his robberies. Sentenced at Salford Hundred Sessions 4th Decem- ber, 1905, to 3 years penal servitude for stealing lead. Liberated on second licence 29th June last, which expires 4th prox. f. 545. Warrant issued. Noblett, Bury. 25.— Skerton ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— JOHN SMITH, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, red face, hair ( thin in front) brown, clean shaved, eyes supposed blue, heavy eyebrows, 2 upper teeth missing; dress, blue serge jacket suit, narrow red and green tie, light grey cap, blucher boots. Appearance of a farmer. Supposed a native of Dur- ham. Represented himself as a railway clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Skerton, Lancaster. 26.— Rochdale ( Borough). — For stealing 8 18- ct. gold signet rings 13th inst.— EDWARD LOGAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, thin face, pointed chin, slight moustache light, right leg deficient, uses a crutch; dress, blue serge suit. A working jeweller, native of London. Absconded 14th inst., on which date he disposed of 2 of the rings in a public- house. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Rochdale. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27.— Ep worth ( County).— For stealing at Owston Ferry, 1st inst., a bicycle, old fashioned, black enamelled, new Thomas cover on back wheel, old Dunlop on front, straight handle bars, silver plated, old pump attached, Pilot on back of saddle— RICHARD ARMSTRONG, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, thin face, thick lips, hair black; dress, dark grey suit, dark green cap, light lace boots. A boatman, native of Barton- on- Humber. Is well known on the Trent, Ouse, and Humber. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Spofforth, Epworth. 28th November, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude for wounding. Licensed 5th April last, g 608. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gillbanks, Frome. 33.— Bath ( City).— For embezzlement in May last— SIDNEY THURGOOD, age about 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, two front upper teeth artificial. Was employed as a miller's traveller. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. 34 — Bridgwater ( Borough).— For stealing, 22nd or 23rd inst., from the ketch " Meredian," a single breasted, blue ribbed cloth coat and vest, nearly new, light colour sleeve lining, wide mauve and thin black stripe to coat and inside vest, plain black buttons, 4 outside pockets to coat; and £ 1 15s. — ALBERT EARLE, age, 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin features, hair brown, clean shaved, long nose, very thick lips, limps ( supposed left leg), carries right shoulder higher than left; dress, old dark striped coat and vest, blue serge trousers, dark cap ( glazed peak), or the stolen clothing. A ship's cook. Shipped on the above- named vessel 7th inst. in London. Stated he had travelled the country selling lavender. Believed a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. 35.— Bridgwater ( Bwough).— For deserting his wife and 2 children, leaving them chargeable to the Bridgwater Union— WALTER JOHN HILL CRESSWELL, alias WALTER HAWKES, age 29, height 5 ft. 5^ in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, prominent nose. A sail- maker. Has served in the Somerset Light Infantry, and is now an absentee from the Army Reserve. Employed at a colliery at Merthyr. May seek employment as an assurance agent or labourer. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the Guardians of the Bridgwater Union for the arrest of Cresswell, Information to the Chief Constable, Bridgwater. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 28.— Peterborough ( Liberty of). — For leaving his children chargeable to the Stamford Union — JOHN WILLIAM MUNNS, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair, moustache and eyes dark brown. A bricklayer's labourer. Supposed a native of Stamford. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Slaughter, Peterborough. NORFOLK. 29 — Norwich ( City).— For obtaining £ 6 by false pretences— HERBERT HOWARD, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, of quiet demeanour, speaks slowly, carries his head slightly forward; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, cap, blucher boots. Has served in the Royal Marines. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich. SHROPSHIRE. 30.— Oswestry ( County).— For absconding with workhouse clothing, 15th inst.— GEORGE KING, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) light, moustache brown, eyes blue; dress, dark suit with white and green stripes, dark cap, all marked No. 43, blue cotton shirt with white stripes, " Ellesmere Union Workhouse, No. 4 " inside back, blue stockings " No. 4 " inside tops, old lace boots. A seaman. He was admitted to the union 13th inst., and stated he came from Warrington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hamlet, Oswestry. 31.— Wellington ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a leather purse and 15s., 14th inst.— HENRY JONES, alias CHARLES SMITH and HENRY SMITH, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark, eyes brown, cut scar right forearm and back left hand, dog's head tattooed on one arm ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark grey striped trousers, green cap, lace boots. A labourer, native of Spring Hill, Birmingham. Previously convicted at Aston Manor, King's Heath and Birmingham, and was liberated from Stafford Prison, 12th inst., after serving 3 months for larceny. Tramps the country and sings in public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fulcher, Wellington. SOMERSETSHIRE. 32.— Frome ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- holder DAVID NELSON, Office No. 680- 09, age 48, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue- grey, scar bridge of nose, small fleshy growth left eyelid. A boiler maker. Native of Glasgow. Sentenced at Bristol Assizes, STAFFORDSHIRE. 36.— Lichfield ( County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences, at Tamworth, 31st ult.— WILLIAM WALKER, age 45 . to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache brown; dress, grey coat and trousers, dark cap, shiny peak, leather strap in front, light lace boots. Carried a cheap rush basket. A native of Oxfordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Lichfield. SURREY. 37.— Oxted ( County). — For shopbreaking 8th inst. at Horley, and stealing a cheque book, Lloyd's Bank, Horley branch, Nos. 140641 to 140670 inclusive ( cheques used to No. 140660), the remainder have since been presented in various parts of London; 1 metal keyless watch, Swiss make; 1 pair blue overalls; 1 brown leather handbag, containing a grease pump, 2 hub cap wrenches, 1 ampere meter, 3 screwdrivers, 2 new files, 3 adjustable spanners ( 1 Billings, 1 B. S. A.), 1 pair pliers, 1 hammer, 1 oil can, 2 punches, 1 open- end spanner, 2 inlet and 2 exhaust valves in case, 6 platinum contact blades, 4 new contact screws, 2 tyre levers, 1 box split pins— EDWARD STEWART ( supposed false), age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, prominent teeth, of good address, probably dressed as a chauffeur. Had with him a bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. West, Oxted. SUSSEX ( East). 38.— Brighton ( Borough). — For stealing jewellery — ALBERT GREY, alias HENRY LAZARUS, a Jew, age about 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, clean shaved, carries one shoulder slightly higher than the other. Represents himself to be a reporter for the Daily Mail.
