GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 1909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2672. REGULATIONS. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them bu another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6.?. should he made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent ; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must he guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property hear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to he inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Ptrsons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion { if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. He stated he was from London, asked to leave his bicycle—" Ilford " on transfer, black enamelled, usual parts plated, dent right handle bar, straps on pedals ( supposed stolen)— and during the absence of the owner, 1st inst., absconded on the bicycle. Left behind a pair of old black stockings which he wore over his boots. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 8.— Birkenhead ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences at Higher Bebington, between 22nd and 29th ult.— BRIDGET CAVANAGH, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 in. com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, turning grey, eyes blue; dress, crushed strawberry dress, black band round bottom, white silk blouse, red belt, black coat, black motor hat, low shoes. Native of Co. Cavan. Accom- panied by a boy and girl. Boy, age 5, hair light brown; " dress, grey suit, green vest with square buttons, white collar. Girl, age 9, hair dark; dress, grey skirt and blouse, brown coat, strap across back, white Tam- o'- shanter. Warrant issued. 9.— Birkenhead ( County).,— For obtaining two sums of 2s. 6d. by false pretences at Lower Bebington, 5th and 12th May, 1909 — JOHN OLDEN, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion very dark, eyes ( large) grey, walks erect and active, of intemperate habits. Supposed a native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Birkenhead. DERBYSHIRE. 10. — Matlock Bridge ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings at Matlock, 29th ult., 1 gent's silver watch, No. ( believed) 181, C. W. and Co. on dial, Congress Watch Company on works, minus hands and glass; 1 gent's silver Express lever do., maker J. G. Greaves, Sheffield; 1 gent's silver albert, twisted links, alternate small and long WILLIAMS, age 50 to 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache grey, supposed scar on left cheek near eye; dress, dark cloth coat, grey trousers and vest, Oxford cotton shirt, black lace boots; wears spectacles when indoors. He obtained lodgings by representing he was engaged to paint the local railway station premises. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Clarke, Matlock Bridge. 11.— Renishaw ( County).— For stealing at Beighton, 21st ult., 3 fire grates and a kitchen range ( recovered)— JOEL BROWN, age 32, height 5 ft. 10| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar on each eyebrow, pierced heart right fore- arm, several dots left forearm ; dress, dark suit and cap, muffler. A bricklayer, native of Sheffield. Has served in the Grenadier Guards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Tort/ uay ( County).-— For stealing ( bailee) a Royal Sunbeam bicycle, about 1905 model, 2- speed gear in bottom bracket, 25 in. frame, black enamelled, green and gold lined, rather wide flat handle bars, Sunbeam Bowden back brake, Sunbeam roller front do., Brooks' saddle, saddle bag and tools, lady's cape strapped with new carrier strap, black oil lamp, Bluemel pump, in good condition— J. MEECH, age 25, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( rather curly) and slight moustache light, may be clean shaved, well spoken; dress, light grey flannel suit, straw hat. He called on several high- class hair- dressers, stating that he was cleaning and repairing wax figures, obtained 2 figures, which he left at a hotel. Warrant issued. ESSEX. 13.— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing a postal order for 12s. 6cl., No. 5/ N 774954— A MAN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair and moustache ( clipped short) dark, eyes brown, wearing dark blue jacket and cap. He called at the Post Office, Herongate, 29th ult., and was served with an order for 12s. Gd., a registered envelope, and 2 postcards. He put something into the envelope and stated he had not sufficient by 2s. 6d. to pay, and would obtain it from a friend outside, and absconded on his bicycle. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 14.— Dunmow ( County).— For obtaining a gramophone by false pretences— G. TAYLOR, alias ALFRED LAWSON and SCOTT, age 23, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut mark centre of forehead, 2 boil marks right side of neck, scar right forearm; dress, blue serge suit, white straw hat, brown boots, cloth uppers. An auctioneer's clerk, native of Southport. He answered an advertisement in the Exchange and Mart for a gramophone, received same, and paid for it with a cheque ( stolen) on the Bank of Liverpool. Wanted at Barrow- in- Furness, Case No. 32, 23rd ult. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 16.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— ALFRED PARISH, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in, slight build, complexion sallow, moustache, right fingers defective; dress, light tweed suit and cap, boots well worn. Stated he was a postman, and has been invalided through an accident. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Gosport ( County).— For failing to report — Licence holder JOHN PARDOE THOMAS, alias WRIGHT, LEWIS and HARRIES, Office No. 352- 01, age 40, height 5 ft. 5f in, complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, mole right temple; dress, blue serge suit, brown cap, green tie. A miner, native of Pembrokeshire. Sentenced at Swansea Assizes, 25th July, 1904, to 3 years penal servitude, and remanet of former sen- tence, for larceny and false pretences. BARTON, Office No. 354- 01, ( Illustrated Circular, 93, Figure 16), age 35, height 4 ft. 9 in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( odd) blue, scar on nose, mole corner of mouth and left ear, wearing black clothing, sailor hat. Has been convicted at Colchester, Rochester, Blackburn, and London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Poole, Dartford. LANCASHIRE. 20 .— Ormskirk ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult, at Birkdale, a lady's gold dress ring, set 5 turquoise ( one very dark) and small diamonds ; 1 do, set turquoise, very old fashioned; 1 do, set pink corals and pearls; 1 plain gold keeper; 1 long fine gold chain, set green stones ; 1 gold oval locket, blue enamel centre, set large diamond, attached a fine gold chain; 1 gold heart- shaped locket, set torquoise, glass at back, attached a fine gold chain; 1 gold plated on silver bracelet, about 1 in. in width, ears of wheat raised all round, fastens with clasp; 1 gold bracelet, basket pattern; 1 plain gold bangle; 1 plain gold pin, small gold chain and image attached; 1 gold oval brooch, set pink corals; 1 small square gold brooch, set red corals, gold back; 1 green stone brooch, gold ends, letters N. She pledged a gold watch same date. Sup- j posed a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hodgson, Ormskirk. 21.— Skerton ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 10s. by false pretences— J. JONES, an American, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 10 in, complexion sallow, j hair very dark, clean shaved; dress, grey mixture ! overcoat, blue serge trousers, yellow boots ( narrow toes, cracked across instep), greenish colour cap. Represented himself as a veterinary surgeon, and had i come to England to dispose of some property, that ; he was short of money, and that his luggage was detained at Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Skerton. 22.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, from 24th May last to 22nd ult.— DANIEL DALY, aged 26, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark, moustache sandy. Stated to be a Naval pensioner. He represented that he was a warder at Liverpool Prison. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 23.— Manchester ( City).— For larceny— EDWARD ASHTON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, complexion fresh, hair light, heavy moustache light or sandy, addicted to drink; dress, light grey mixture jacket suit, pot hat, brown boots. Supposed a tipster or commission agent. He took a small warehouse, paid a month's rent in advance, then ordered large quantities of grey cloth, sheep skin rugs, & c, from manufacturers, stating the goods would be paid for on 23rd inst, but on that date he absconded. The goods were removed by A MAN, age about 35, very tall, one leg shorter than other, thick sole to one boot, appearance of a farmer. Used a light red lorry with broad wheels. Warrant issued. LEICESTERSHIRE. 24.— Loughborough ( County).— For steal- ing, 9th ult, a Raglan bicycle, No. 29030, 24 in. frame, new black enamelled, red lines, upturned handle- bars, Cambridge back tyre, plain front do, rubber pedals, bell pump and bag attached, a cheque book on the London City and Midland Bank ( Loughborough Branch), containing 5 blank cheques, presented at various banks in London, signed Stevenson and Tufnell— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion fair, hair light brown, appeared well educated; dress, blue serge suit, round soft mixture tweed hat. Was seen at Aldershot 29th ult. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Leicester, or Supt. Agar, Loughborough. LINCOLNSHIRE. 25.— Boston ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 28th ult.— Licence- holder JESSIE | FLORENCE CREWE, alias BOND, MITCHELL, LONGHURST, WATSON, WARD, REYNOLDS, McFARLAND, ELLIOTSON, CLIFTON, FUSSELL and CAREW, Office No. 1907- 02, Case No. 2, 14th May, 1909 ( Illustrated Circular, 83, Fig. 19), age 75, height 5 ft, complexion sallow, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, scar right jaw, abscess scar on neck, right wrist been fractured. Calls at private houses with a plausible tale of distress and asks for assistance. States that she is the widow of a solicitor who com- mitted suicide, and that she is the daughter of a colonel in the army. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Boston. NORFOLK. 26.— Norwich ( City).— THOMAS BRIGHAM and FREDERICK BATLEY, Case No. 25, 4th September, 1908. Not now wanted. PEMBROKESHIRE. 27— Pembroke Dock ( County). — For indecent assault— THOMAS NICHOLAS, age 20, height 5 ft 2 or 3 in, complexion fresh ( freckled), hair brown, eyes grey, slightly bow- legged, round shouldered. A good cyclist. May be found at athletic sports. A blacksmith and cycle repairer, native of Loveston, Pembrokeshire. Warrant issued. 28.— Pembroke Dock ( County). — For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences— F. WALSH ( supposed false), age about 58, height 5 ft. 8 in, good build, complexion fair, hair and moustache sandy ( turning grey), eyes blue; dress, light grey suit, white straw hat with black band. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thomas, Pembroke Dock. 29.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County). — For stealing £ 14 at Neyland, on 27th ult.— WILLIAM ELI PRIOR, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, thick set, small abscess scar right cheek; dress, brown striped suit, blue print shirt, blue socks, light green cap. A ship's cook. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Haverfordwest. SOMERSETSHIRE. 30.— Dunster ( County).— For embezzlement— ARTHUR REED, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 3 in, complexion fair, hair light, horse's head and reins believed tattooed left arm; dress, nearly new navy serge suit and cap, may be wearing a light suit. A baker, native of Cutcombe. Has served in the Navy. Previously convicted at Ilminster. May endeavour to join the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Perry, Ilminster. SUFFOLK ( East). 31.— Framlingham ( County).— For stealing at Fressingfield, 26th ult, a bay mare ( recovered)— WILLIAM GIBSON, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in, slight build, complexion dark, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey; dress, black rough jacket, brown vest, black trousers with white vertical stripes, dark green cap, blue and white washable tie, light lace boots ( believed cut). Heavy drinker and fond of bell- ringing. Well known at Diss, Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mann, Framlingham. SUSSEX ( East). 32.— Uckfield ( County).— For obtaining, 5th ult, a quantity of cigars and £ 3 3s. by a worthless cheque— C. CAMPBELL, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, complexion very pale, hair and heavy moustache dark ( deep parting in centre), eyes dark ; dress, slate colour suit, straw hat, black band, brown worsted vest bound with brown braid, green tie with red spots, brown boots. He purchased 2 boxes of cigars at a tobacconists and tendered a cheque for £ 5 on the Birkbeck Bank, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London, W. C, signed John Edmunds, and made payable to C. Campbell, Esq, dated 3rd July, 1909. " The cheque is one of a book of 12 which was issued to Samuel C. Fisher in June, 1908. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Criddle, Uckfield. 33.— Eastbourne ( Boi- ough).— For embezzle- ment— FRED WHITE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, complexion sallow, hair dark, thin face, front teeth much decayed, tattooed " F. W." and " M. W. " inside left forearm; dress, blue serge coat, blue vest with 5 fancy buttons ( horse's head thereon), new dark stripe tweed trousers, dark green cap, brown button boots, dark sailor knot tie.
