GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1909. VTOL. XXVI., No. 2662. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inser'ed in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eaves where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment, must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of Is. per portrait, end of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an offi- cer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and HO warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, citu, or borough, as the case may he. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. RE & XJLA. TIONS, 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen properly bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later . than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must he in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street, Post Office. This man is still at large and believed to be in this country, may now be found visiting Race Meetings in the Provinces, or travelling the country with a horse and cart, as a dealer m old rubber, & c., is very quarrelsome when in drink, and mav at any time be charged with drunkenness or fighting. Warrant issued. 5.— Division.— For obtaining £ 14 10s. by false pretences.— A LFRED VEO, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion fair, full face, hair and moustache brown, very short neck, carries his head forward, talks rather quickly in a high tone with slight American accent; dress, dark jacket suit, black bowler hat. He represents himself as managing • director of the American Amusement Syndicate, The Imperial Exhibition ditto, Donnybrook Fair, & c., and advertises to contract for amusements. Warrant issued. A native of Yorkshire. ANNIE PHILLIPINE WADE, age 50, height 5 ft. : 9 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, walks badly, appears to be flat- footed; wearing black ( clothing. Holding, Clewer. 1— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing from their lodgings a piccolo ( recovered) and a walking stick— NORMAN HALL, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ruddy, clean shaved, eyes blue, prominent nose; dress shabby dark mixture suit, green cap, supposed brown boots; GEORGE BROWN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, moustache light, large teeth, lump on left side of neck; dress shabby dark suit, hard felt hat, button boots. They took lodgings 19th ult., stated they were travelling with samples for the Globe Metal Polish Co., and were waiting for their manager. Absconded 21st ult. S.— Chesham ( County).— For stealing 10th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— EDWARD CHARLES JUPP, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion ruddy, hair dark brown, tattooed both arms ; dress blue coat, light trousers and cap. A painter, native of Crayford, Kent. Has served in the 7th Dragoon Guards, and was discharged from the Army Reserve on conviction of similar offences at Rye and Hayward's Heath, Sussex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Trevener, Chesham. DERBYSHIRE. 9 — Chesterfield ( County).— For failing to rep0rt— Supervisee ARTHUR MIDDLETON, Office 3So. 1039- 02, age 42, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, mole near left eye and on left forearm. A native of Staveley. Sentenced at Derby County Quarter Sessions, 16th October, 1907, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years supervision for larceny. Liberated 21st September, 1908. 871. ESSEX. 10.— Chelmsford ( County).— For embezzling £ 4 17s. 7d. between 15th and 22nd ult., at Ingate- stone— WILLIAM HORSNELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 8^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, i moustache light brown, eyes grey, fiat feet, walks | badly, some toes missing from one foot; dress, dark suit, long dark overcoat, black bowler hat, lace boots. Fond of company and music, plays the violin. A journeyman butcher, native of Hatfield Peverel. Is believed to have been previously convicted at Walthamstow. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. West wood and Sons, High Street, Grays," on tab of jacket. 2 caps ( 1 green, 1 light)- ALFRED WILLIAM ELLIS, age 32, height 5 ft. 7^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey ; woman, shamrock, thistle and rose right forearm', small mole right cheek, bullet wound right buttock and back of left knee, sunflower and pot left forearm, left instep has been broken. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 12.— Cheltenham ( County).— For stealing 8th ult., a table- cloth ( recovered) — JOHN BEAUCHAMP, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7£ in., stout build, hair ( cut close) light, clean shaved, of good address, very talkative, slightly bow- legged; dress dark grey jacket and vest, dark brown trousers, with squares, cap or bowler hat, patent leather shoes. A dock labourer, but was employed here, as canvasser for a laundry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 13.— Dursley ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee CHARLES BISHOP, alias CHARLES JOHN BRIDLE BISHOP, Office No. 1048- 09, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, blue mark and figure right fore- arm. A native of Otterton, Devon. Sentenced at Gloucester County Quarter Sessions, 7th April, 1909, to 2 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for larceny. Liberated 28t, h May last. 1085. Perkins, Dursley. 14.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences, 29t'h August, 1908— JOHN PARSONS, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion and eyes dark, long features, red nose, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress dark suit, soft felt hat, or grey flannel suit and straw hat. A commercial traveller. Has been a superintendent of the Bible and Purity Evangelization Society, and may be found in company of religious bodies. Absconded 7th ult. Warrant issued. Hawkins, Aldershot. lb.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing a bricklayer's trowel, 12 in. long. 3 cuts on handle, 2 plasterer's layinsr- on trowels, 1 gauging trowel, 1 angle trowel— JOSEPH FARMER, age 41, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sunburnt, hair, moustache, and eyes brown; dress, shabby navy blue suit, dark cap, light lace boots. A bricklayer. Warrant issued. 17.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a trolley ( recovered)— WILLIAM FORD, age 20 to 23, height about 6 ft., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair and slight moustache light, London accent, usually wears breeches and leggings, some- times wears grey suit. A greengrocer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. HER TFORDSHIRE. 18.— St. Albans ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the St. Albans Union — GAVIN BROWNING PATON, age33( looksolder), height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair ( thick and curly) black, eyes ( full) dark blue, nods his head when walking, addicted to drink, an inveterate cigarette smoker. A school teacher. Warrant issued. ! 19.— St. Albans ( County).— For embezzle- ment— FREDERICK WILLIAM GODFREY, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, grey jacket, dark trousers, tight fitting, check cap. A clerk. Native of Hackney. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reed, County Police Office, St. Albans. KENT. 20.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining 3s. 9d. by false pretences, 5th ult.— A. II. THOMAS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., good build, com- plexion and stubby moustache dark, full face; wearing dark clothes, black hard felt hat, carried a small black hand bag. He calls on confectioners and restaurant proprietors, states he represents a firm of ticket manufacturers and the Ivorine Manu- facturing Company, solicits orders for tickets, obtains payment for same, and gives receipts from an ordinary receipt book. Had sample tickets in his possession. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. Zl.— Barro w- in - Furness ( Boro ugh). — For burglary— ARTHUR McCOY, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark ( tanned), hair dark brown, eyes blue, two grey patches top of head, and one back, recent cut marks left arm; dress, dark grey check jacket ( splashed with lime wash), blue trousers, dark cap, brown lace boots ( patched on sole with leather belting), tabs marked " Ivy Brand." A native of Barrow- in- Furness. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. LEICES TERSHIRE. 22.— Market Harborough ( County).— For obtaining food and lodging by fraud, and stealing jewellery ( recovered), supposed— BERT WALDRON, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair ( very long and bushy) and moustache dark ; dress, black frock coat and trousers, silk hat, black tie, patent leather shoes. He passes in different names as ail American doctor, lectures in halls, and occasionally takes parts on the stage. Wariant issued. 23.— Market Harborough ( County).— For failing to report — Licence- holder JOHN BENNETT, alias SPENCER, WILSON, and BARRETT, Office No. 485- 02 ( Illustrated Circular 65, figure 29), age 58, height 5 ft. 4^ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, scar right eyebrow and left ear. A native of Leicester. Sentenced at Northampton Assizes, 9th February, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed llth May last, Z h 387. May be dealt with where found. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Alford ( County).— For obtaining various 5 sums of money by false pretences at Mablethorpe, 3rd ult.— SIDNEY ASHTON, alias CHARLES, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( bald, long at sides and brushed over top), clean shaved, prominent nose, bold eyes; dress, rather light check overcoat, dark striped jacket suit, dark tie, white cuffs, black hard hat, lace boots, had with him a green and white striped washing vest, with green stripe down centre, and a dark tweed cap. Carried a brown leather case about 15 iu. long, 12 in. deep, 4 or 5 in. thick, containing samples of bill- heads, visiting cards, note- paper, & c. Calls upon tradesmen, boarding- house keepers, & c., states he represents a firm of printers at Crewe, obtains orders and collects money in advance, gives a receipt signed S. Ashton. Stated he had minstrel troupes at Skegness, Spalding and Cleethorpes. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hill, Alford. An author and journalist, native of Birmingham. He obtains money for copies of his book, " Tales and Sketches of Old and New Bristol," and for advertisements to appear therein. Previously convicted at Bristol and Abingdon of obtaining money by false pretences and fraudulently collectino- alms. Absconded 7th ult, Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. A native of Cheshire. lie calls upon shopkeepers and repre- sents himself as the representative or traveller for a wholesale firm of tea, coffee and cocoa blenders, Tower Bridge, London, produces their printed price list, obtains orders and part payment, giving a receipt and copy of the order obtained. A native of Glasgow. Sentenced at Durham Quarter Sessions, 15th October, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 12th ult. g. 482. CHESHIRE. 37.— Broxton ( County).— Referring to the pro- perty described in Case No. 51, 2oth ult.— HARRY REGINALD PALMER has confessed to stealing same at Liverpool. 38.— Hazel- Grove ( County).— Remanded till 6th inst., charged with stealing ( servant) a blue linen embroidered shirt— IRENE SATTERWAITE alias ELSIE SMITH, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, round face, hair black, eyes brown; dress brown costume, navy blue silk blouse trimmed lace, grey coat, dark hat with red rose in front. A domestic servant. States she was born at Bombay and that her father ( now deceased) was an army officer. Information to Supt, Dutton, Hazel- Grove, Stock- port. PROPERTY STOLEN. BEDFORDSHIRE. 39.— Bedford ( Borough). — 19th ult., from a hotel, a lady's 18 ct. gold ring, set turquoise ( 1 slightly darker than others, reset); 1 do. flat ruby ring; 1 do. heavy gold " Mizpah" ring ( large letters); 1 do. half mourning gold and pearl ring, 4 pearls, very old and thin; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, key winding, gold washed, " Matthews, Leighton Buzzard," on works; 1 do. gold double albert, short, a piece of gold chain attached with 3 small gold lockets thereon, 1 gold watch key, 1 green . seal ( hand and heart impression), set 111 gold, and other trinkets. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 40.— Chesham ( County).— Between 26th and 28th ult., at Beaconsfield, a heavy white sweater, turned- down collar, 2 pairs of white flannel trousers, button missing left side of one pair, laundry marks H.
