XXVI., No. 2642. i. 3. 3& X3Csm-_ All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, . NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. ' 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article i's large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if Jor the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force agaillst him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 6. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13 11. STS. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a coTv aS " S practicable they are alphabetically arranged by The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion nf any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whict may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded s as to be received riot later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. _ They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. SPECIAL NOTICE. SUPPOSED MURDER OR ATTEMPTED MURDER. WARWICKSHIRE. 1.— Birmingham ( City).— Found about 2.15 p. m., 16th inst., in a tunnel on the Great Western Railway, between Hockley and Snow Hill Stations, a greenish mixture cloth coat, with faint blue and red squares and grey stripes ( double- breasted), side, 2 inside breast, and 1 inside ticket pockets, 4 black bone buttons each side, bullet hole in left breast, edges scorched, apparently by a pistol or other weapon being fired at close quarters, the inside of the coat is saturated with blood, and would fit a man of rather stout build. A cook; supposed a native of the South of France. 4.— X Division .— For stealing ( servant) 3 razors, and 6s.— THOMAS COOPER, alias WIL- KINSON, SMITH, SOLE, and HILL, Office No S/ 20434, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and eyes brown, " T," ring, and anchor right forearm; dress,, dark clothes and cap. 5.— Y Division.— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences, 7th inst.— FLORENCE HOLLIS, alias GEAR, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, slight impedi- ment in speech, front teeth decayed; dress, black skirt and coat, lace around wrists, black hat and veil, wore gold rimmed pince nez with thin gold chain. She calls upon clergymen, represents that her husband is dyings, and asks for a loan to enable her to realise on some life policies. Warrant issued. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6. — Bedford { Borough). — For stealing ( bailee), 13th inst., a " Triumph " bicycle, transfer on head, slightly raised handle bars, black en- amelled, white lined, 3 speed gear, " Sturmey Archer" top tube control, mudguard, lamp, bell and pump attached— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in.„ stoops slightly, complexion dark, hair and moustache ginger, thick lips, large eyes, wear- ing gold rimmed glasses with thick lenses; dress, brown knicker suit, grey stockings, brown soft hat, lace boots. May be found at Y. M. C. A. buildings. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. CHESHIRE. 7.— Dukinfield ( County).— For stealing £ 12 from his lodgings— A MAN, age 24 to 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, clean shaved, of smart appearance; dress, dark brown suit, cap, lace boots, wearing a sup- posed gold watch and double chain ( curb pattern, warn double on left side). Stated he was a native of Yorkshire. He obtained lodgings stating he was employed in advertising Rowntree's cocoa and chocolate, and would be in the district several days distributing samples. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Croghan, Dukinfield. 8.— Northwich ( County).— For obtaining 7 tons 21 cwts. of scrap iron by false pretences— W. WILLIAMS, age 46 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown, mous- tache ( rather heavy) sandy, turns one foot out- wards, walks as if sore footed; dress, light suit ( square cut jacket, long in waist, flaps behind), black hard felt hat, lace boots. DERBYSHIRE. 9.— Renishaw ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 8th inst., at Eckington, a cream coloured delaine blouse, cream lace yoke, trimmed bebe ribbon, embroidery strap over shoulders; 1 dark green flowered delaine blouse, heliotrtope baby linen and lace yoke, 4 buttons on front; 1 black dress skirt— A WOMAN, age about 20, medium height, stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curly) brown; dress, blue costume,, loose fitting jacket, plain skirt, black hat ( trimmed). Warrant issued. 10.— Renishaw ( County) .— For obtaining money by false pretences, at Dronfield, 3rd inst.— JANE WRIGHT, alias ELIZABETH and JENNIE WRIGHT, age about 42, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brownj, addicted to drink; dress, three- quarter length black jacket, black dress, black fur necklet, red straw hat, red straw rosette one side, old black canvas shoes. A housekeeper; supposed a native of Rotherham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. 11.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For obtain- ing board and lodgings by false pretences, between 5th and 10th inst.— JOSEPH CASWELL, alias SAMUEL PRITCHARD, age 44, height 6 ft. 1 in., stout build, weight about IS stones, com- plexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes light blue ( right defective)'. A pit sinker; native of Ilkeston. Stated he had obtained employment at a local colliery. Convicted of similar offences at Chesterfield ( Co.), Longton, and Stockport. Warrant issued. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Dorchester ( County).— For stealing £ 3 3s. from his lodgings, 15th inst.— ALBERT JOHN CAROLAN, Office No. 812- 99, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, mole left of forehead and corner left eyebrow; dress, dark grey waterproof overcoat, black frock coat and vest,, black trousers, light cap. carried an umbrella, cherry wood crook handle ( has been repaired), also a bundle of manuscript in hisi overcoat pocket. He travels from town to town ( usually without pay- ing his fare), stays at small coffee shops or private houses, and sometimes obtains work as a com- positor. He will probably apply to the Composi- tors' Association in the district he visits for assistance. Has been convicted at Derby, Bath, Bristol, Nottingham, Salisbury, Northampton, and London. W.— S0Uthend- 0n- Sea ( County).— For stealing boots ( recovered)— HAROLD GRIF- FITHS, age 40, height 5 fit. 8 in., good build, complexion ruddy, hair dark ( turning grey), clean shavedi, eyes blue, addicted to drink; dress1, grey jacket suit and overcoat, bowler hat, lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued. U.— Southend- On- Sea ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 17th inst., a free wheel bicycle, 24 in. frame, enamelled black, black wheels, new Warwick back tyre, B. H. front do., Quickfit front brake, North Road dropped handle bars ( plated), black cranks, rat trap pedals, 80 gear, black cellu- loid back mudguard^ \ in. pitch chain, " 11 " stamped on front down tube TURNER, age 17, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slightly round shoulders, thin face; dress, grey jacket suit, cap. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 15.— Bristol ( City).— For embezzling £ 1 18s. 6d.— JAMES RICHARDS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, of military appearance; dress, blue serge suit, light cap, lace, boots. He was employed by a firm of tailors to deliver goods and receive payment, on 8th inst. he was entrusted with 2 suits to deliver, for which he collected the money and absconded. A native of Liverpool. He lodged at the Salvation Army Home, and may be found in similar institutions. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 16.— Bristol {( City).— For obtaining a cheque for £ 6 by false pretences, 13th inst.— HARRY GREEN, a Jew, age about 24, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in.,, slight build, complexion pale, hair ( curly, bushy) black, clean shaved, Roman nose ( bridge broken), " Harry, Henry, Sammy, Dora, and Doris," " J. P." or " R. P." tattooed right arm; dres^, greenish mixture jacket and trousers, fancy striped vest, brown overcoat, black narrow rimmed bowler hat, wearing a bugle shape pin, lace boots. A tailor. He obtained the cheque from a man he was lodging with, stating he had obtained a situation as cutter with a firm of tailors here, but had to deposit £ 6 as security. He resorts to crying to gain his ends. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 17.— Bristol ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JAMES THOMAS BRAVEN, alias GASS, JOHNSON, ALISON, and JONES, Office No. 231- 09, age 32, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, abscess mark on chin; dress, dark suit, faint blue stripe, fancy grey waistcoat, grey tie with tie ring, set 3 stones, dark green cap, wore 3 rings on two of his fir, gers. A carpenter; native of Malta. Sentenced at Exeter Sessions, 16th October, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude for false pretences. Licensed 6th February last g 429. For a few weeks he was employed as cook at the Church Army Home, Bristol, and may endeavour to ob- tain a similar situation. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 18— Bournemouth ( County).— ARTHUR PHILIP ALISON, Office No. 753 09, Case No. 12, 16th inst. Information cancelled. 19.— Gosport ( County).— For non- compliance with a maintenance order, made at Gosport, 18th inst.— SAMUEL PAGE, age 57, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, 2 moles left cheek, scars back both hands. A labourer,, may seek employment on public works. A pensioner of the Royal Artillery. Accompanied by a Woman, age about 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion fresh. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 20 — Southampton * ( Borough).— BERTIE GEORGE SMOKER, Case No. 13, 16th inst. In- formation cancelled. HEREFORDSHIRE. 21.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing, 14th inst., a light bay mare, aged, about 15 hands, rather heavy, knees chipped, mane and tail trimmed, and a saddle and bridle ( nearly new)— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) short, and whiskers ( trimmed) brown, eyes blue^ grey, abscess marks left side of neck; dress, pepper and salt colour jacket and vest, drab breeches and leggings, yellow striped cap, brown boots ( blacked). Has been em- ployed to lead entire hofrees, attends fairs and race meetings. Supposed a native of North Shropshire. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. 22.— Hereford ( City).— For obtaining 6 pigs by fraud, 24th ult.— HOWARD YARDLEY, alias T. IRELAND, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, mous- tache light brown, bow- legged; dress, grey plaid suit^, light cap, wearing a heavy silver watch chain, usually carries a dark malacca cane. Appearance of a groom, lately employed hay trussing. A native of Chaddesley Corbett, near Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Warrant issued. 23.— Hereford ( City).— For housebreaking and stealing a pair light lace boots, toe caps, size 9; 1 Army razor, " No. 10746" on handle; 6 tea spoons, believed electro plate or white metal; 1 Australian coin, size of a 5s. piece ( has been worn as a brooch); 1 18 ct. brooch, about ins. long, 3 rubies ( 1 each end and 1 in centre); and 19s.—- A MAN, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in,, complexion dark swarthy; dress, shabby dark clothes, grey cap, supposed dark overcoat, black muffler, folded across chest, old light boots, or may) be wearing the stolen boots. HER TFORDSHIRE. 24.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., at King's Langley,, 2 bicycles ( recovered)— TWO MEN, Germans ( lst, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, clean shaved; dress, dark tweed suit, mackin- tosh overcoat, bowler hat, lace boots. 2nd, age 24 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair, and slight moustache dark; wearing a mackintosh overcoat, lace boots). Warrants issued. 25.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For stealing a case containing maps, 8th ult.— FRANK CHARLES TRACHSELL. age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, speaks several languages; dress, dark tweed suit, Norfolk jacket ( sometimes breeches and stockings), tweed cap. She adver- tised an in- foal mare for sale, promised to give the foal for the care of the mare, obtained money as security, and then refused to send the mare, added a clause to a duly signed agreement without the consent of the other party, under which she demanded the full price of the animal. Believed to be wanted elsewhere. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. LANCASHIRE- 29 — Liverpool { City).- For stealing £ 20 by by confidence trick, 10th February last— JOSEPH and whiskers brown ( turning grey), moustache and eyes brown, sometimes wears glasses; usually wears dark clothing. A Corporation rate collector. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Leicester. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( nmthiued)-*- HER TFORDSHIRE. 31— Hertford ( County).— For obtaining 4s. 9d. by false pretences at Hertingfordbury, 6th ult. — J. PAGE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark. A photo- grapher. He calls at old- fashioned cottages in villages and ask to be allowed to take photographs of same, and induces the occupiers to order copies, obtains payment in advance. Warrant issued. Foster, Hertford. 32.— Hitchin ( County).- For causing grievous bodily harm, 11th inst.— GEORGE DOBBS, alias GEORGE STEPHEN WILLIAM JOHN DOBBS, Office No. S 38651, age , height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, " Buffalo Bill," " I Love Lit Ablett," " I. L. L. S.," and woman right arm. A native of Ed- monton, Middlesex. May be found in company of costermongers or low horse dealers. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. KENT. 33.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing a clock from a public house bar— CHRISTOPHER WOODHAMS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8' or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, of military ap- pearance ; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 27.— Bristol ( City).— For receiving stolen geyseys during February last — WILLIAM CORNELIUS DEACON, alias KELLY and ALLEN, age 47, height about 5 ft. 8 in., rather corpulent, complexion t> ale, full facei, large nose, hair and drooping moustache dark brown. He came to Bristol about 6 years ago, and has held the licence of two public houses, prior to which he was employed by various medical men in London as nurse to invalid gentle- men. May seek employment as nurse or attendant at Medical Institutions. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. YORKSHIRE 28.— Richmond ( County).— For obtaining £ 4. 10s. by false pretences, 23rd ult.— LEONARD VEALE, alias GEORGE ROBINSON and GEORGE WALKER, age about 60, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair ( turning grey), moustache and short side whiskers brown, eyes light brown; dress, black suit, snuff colour overcoat, saddle pointed between shoulders, dark Worth Riding). peak cap, brown boots, usually carries a yellow cane. A farm labourer or milk dealer, generally represents himself as a cattle dealer. A native of Constable Burton,, Yorks. Previously convicted of fraud. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. He calls upon leading tradespeople of a town, represents that he is the editor of the St. James' Illustrated Review, and asks permission to view their business premises, collects information regarding their trade, and states he will photo- graph their premises for insertion in the Review for purposes of advertisement. In some cases he states he will send an artist to sketch the premises. He succeeds in getting orders for a certain number of copies of his paper, and usually obtains half payment in advance for the number of copies ordered. Is believed to have committed numerous cases of fraud in a similar way in other districts. Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford.
