THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2636. i. All communications for insertion in the POI. ICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. />. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5. s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the. requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. GUliATIOSTS. 6. 7. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranyed by ccAmties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerniny delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion { if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post ivithin the United Kingdom. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows: — ( à) All persons coming within Section 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( á) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's • im- prisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate 8 Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, with- out option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens' Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Bankruptcy offences. Being found on enclosed premises. Breaking into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Burglary. Cattle stealing. Coining. Conspiracies of all descriptions. Embezzlement. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been pre- viously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or con- victions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A native of Austria. 8.— Y Division.— For obtaining, by a false cheque, a dark brown cart mare, 15 hands 3 ins., star on forehead, medium mane and tail, in good condition; a bay cart mare, 12 years, 16 hands 1 in., grey hair on head, black points, slight spavin off hind leg, in fair condition; a black gelding cob. 8 years, 14 hands 2 ins., hog mane, clipped deep in neck, short tail; a bay mare cob, 9 years, 14 hands 2 ins., chafed at sides, saddle marked, hog mane near top of bridle, short tail— A MAN, age about 42, good build, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair dark, slight moustache curled inwards, 2 front upper teeth missing; wearing shabby dark overcoat, brownish muffler, yellow socks, cap, heavy nailed boots. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Bedford [ Borough).— For obtaining a " Special Pocket Kodak" camera and £ 2 by a worthless cheque, 22nd ult.— C. GREEN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache very light; wearing a greyish- fawn coloured overcoat, bowler hat. He asked to be shown some cameras, and paid for one value £ 2 5s. with a cheque, No. F. W. 89735, on the Union of London & Smith's Bank ( lost by one of their customers), Chancery Lane Branch, for £ 4 5s., made payable to C. Green in favour of H. Watkins. Warrant issued. 5.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing a dark grey rainproof overcoat, velvet collar ( repaired), chain hanger; and £ 8, 28th ult.— — WILSON, age about 27(, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, small face, hair brown, believed clean shaved, eyes grey, rather bad teeth; dress, dark jacket suit, gold colour watch chain, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. He took lodgings, 27th ult., stated he was a goods clerk, and had been transferred to Bedford from Birmingham. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 6.— Slough ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 25th ult., whole plate, " Thornton- Pickard, Imperial " Perfecta" camera, double dark slide, " Isostigmar " lens, by> R. & J. Beck, wide angle lens by Watson & Sons, and stiff brown leather camera case— WILLIAM ST. CLAIR, Office No. S/ 100057, age 27, height 5 ft. 5| in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ( wavy), eyes blue, scar right eyebrow, right wrist, and back of neck, plausible manner; dress, greenish- grey over- coat), dark trousers with stripe. Pearman, Slough. 8.— High Wycombe ( Borough).— For la) - ceny ( bailee)— JOSEPH EDWARD COOK, age 29, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., good build, complexion ruddy, hair ( slightly grey) dark, moustache sandy, eyes grey, smokes heavily, upright bearing, left little finger and top of 3rd left finger missing; dress, dark serge jacket, brown guernsey, blue serge trousers, grey neckerchief with dark stripes, dark peak cap, lace boots, wears a brown leather belt with brass buckle. May be found employed as a chimney sweeper or coal carter. He served in South Africa with the lst Oxfordshire Light In- fantry Reserves. Absconded 22nd inst. Photograph can be seen on application. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 9.— Cambridge ( Borough,).— For stealing a dark grey overcoat, sac back, velvet collar, false cuffs, may have " Warllaw & Reed, London " there- on; and about £ 14,, 26th or 27th ult., from a Commercial Hotel GLOVER, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, mous- tache ( turned up at ends) and eyes dark; dress, dark jacket suit, black bowler hat, button boots, very small linked gold chain, carried a brown bag, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. Stated he was a commercial traveller. On 26th inst. he was seen in company of a Man, age about 30, tall, clean shaved; wearing dark overcoat, green cap. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— Renishaw ( County).— For assault and wilful damage to a piano organ, 5th inst.— JOHN HUGHES, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar left side of chin; dress, dark jacket suit, dark cap and muffler A native of Barlborough, Derbyshire. Is a de- serter from the 2nd West Yorks Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield DORSETSHIRE. n.— Sturminster Newton ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 25th ult., a bicycle ( re- covered) DAY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, heavy moustache light, eyes grey, wears glasses; dress, grey Norfolk jacket and knickers, brown knitted vest, soft green hat, lace boots. Stated he was a traveller and represented a Lace Company at Nottingham; also that he was a native of Bath. Appears identical with George Day, Case No. 39, 15th January, and S. Carroll, Case No. 19, 5th February last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Collins, Sturminster Newton. ESSEX. 12 — Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings), two cases— THIRZA THOMP- SON or TOMK1NS, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, one front upper tooth broken; dress, blue coat and skirt, black motor hat, brown fur necklet, button shoes. A native of Norfolk. Stated she was a member of the Salvation Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. 13.— Colchester ( Borough).— For feloniously demanding with menaces 6s. 6d. with intent to steal — A MAN, age about 24, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair black ( curly), clean shaved, eyes dark; dress, dark suit,, dark striped overcoat, violet tie, black bowler hat, black box calf boots, sometimes wears check cap, also wears heavy gold ring on right little finger, and pin. Usually has a brown paper parcel tied with cord or fastened with brown straps. He calls upon servant girls at large houses and represents that he is travelling for Messrs. Mitchell & Co., London, whom he states is opening a studio in the locality, obtains a small photograph which he promises to enlarge, and subsequently visits them a second time with the proofs and some patterns of moulding. After a pattern is selected he demands a sum of money in advance. Within a few days he returns the photo- graph framed, which is found to be practically worthless, and then demands more money and threatens the purchasers with proceedings if they refuse to pay. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Colchester. GLAMORGA N SHIRE. Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining 3s. 9d„ by false pretences— FRANK WARD, alias HAY- WARD, age about 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fair, full face, hair light, clean shaved, back left hand swollen, of military appearance; dress, new blue serge suit, grey cap, blue and white tie, grey overcoat, boots much worn. Stated he was a wireless telegraph operator in the employ of the Admiralty. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. 15.— Swansea ( Borough).— For failing to re- port— Licence- holder IVOR DAVIES, alias THOMAS JONE% Office No. 1752- 01, age 52, height 5 ft. 8£ in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( thin, turning grey), eyes grey, scar right of forehead, left eyebrow, and each forearm. A joiner; native of Carmarthen. Sentenced at Glamorganshire Quarter Sessions, Bridgend, 16th October, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude for count- ing- housebreaking. Licensed 19th January, 1909. g 476. May be dealt with where found. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 16.— Gloucester ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee GEORGE FOSTER, alias MARTIN TYGHE, GEO. HILL, and FRED- ERICK JACARS, Office No. 550- 09, age 43, height 5 ft. 5 § in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right of forehead, tattoo marks right forearm; dress, dark tweed suit and cap. A native of Gloucester. Sentenced at Gloucester County Quarter Sessions, 21st October, 1908, to 6 months hard labour and 12 months supervision for larceny. Liberated 22nd ult., and was seen in Cheltenham the following day, but has not reported. May be dealt with where found. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 17 — Bournemouth ( County).— For house- breaking and stealing a cheque for £ 25, No. A. 6451, drawn on the London and County Bank, Bournemouth Branch, dated 25th March, 1909, by Johanna Payne, and made payable to Harriet Dicker, Johnanna was originally written on cheque but crossed through and Joanna written above; also a banker's pass1 book on the same Bank— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., heavy build, full face, flabby, clean shaved; wearing dark blue or black shabby overcoat, dark cap. Carried a black hand bag. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 18.— Fareham ( County).— For embezzling £ 16 at Fort Purbrook— TIMOTHY MOLONEY, an Irishman, age 35 or 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, blue serge suit, light cap or bowler hat, light lace boots. Formerly in the Lancashire Fusiliers Militia. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. HER TFORDSHIRE. 19.— Hitchin ( County).— For deserting his wife and 2 children, leaving them chargeable to the Hitchin Union— ALFRED WALTER PETERS, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, eyes grey, middle and third left fingers amputated at top joints, middle right finger short and large at top; dress, brown or green suit, thick light coloured overcoat, brown cap and boots. A packing case maker; native of Luton, Beds. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. KENT. 20.— Rochester ( City).— For obtaining a pair black box calf boots, black top band and facings inside, straight toe caps, round toes, American shape, size 8; 1 pair Maroon Grecian slippers, flat sole$, no heels, size 8; and £ 1 5s., by a worthless cheque, No. S 48585, Bayswater Branch, London & County Banking Co., Ltd., 74 and 76 Westbourne Grove, London, signed John E. Ford, payable to A. Miller, Esq., 13th ult.— A. MILLER ( supposed false), age about 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and full mous- tache dark; dress, black plain overcoat, dark trousers and cap. The cheque was one from a book issued to J. G. Walker in January, 1901, whose account closed the same year. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Rochester. 21.— Dover ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder GEORGE PERCY HOWLAND, Office No. 1768- 04, age 28, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, mole left cheek, burn scar right elbow. A baker; native of Linton, near Maidstone. Sentenced at Maid- stone Sessions, 5th July, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude for cycle stealing. Licensed 5th October, 1908. g 309. May be dealt with where found. Also wanted at Folkestone and Canterbury for cycle stealing. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 22,— RamSgate ( Borough).— For stealing. 24th ult., 2 costumes ( a medium brown colour tailor made costume, short tight fitting jacket,, trimmed with silk braid, buttons covered with brown silk; 1 recovered)— GEORGE MAR- SHALL, alias HARRY PIERCE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., complexion fresh, long thin face, drooping moustache light, teeth missing from front upper jaw; dress, brown jacket, navy blue trousers, dark cap, long brown overcoat, rough material. A native of Canterbury. MAR- SHALL, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion and hair dark,, peculiarity about the eyes, flags believed to be tattooed both arms; dress, navy blue skirt, light grey coat and white sailor hat, may be wearing the stolen costume. They engaged a furnished room 18th ult. On the 24th ult. the man called at a shop and requested that some costumes be 6ent to the address, for his wife to select from. The costumes were sent and the woman induced the assistant to leave them as her husband was out. Believed to have left by road on morning of 25th ult. The costume re- covered was disposed of at a second- hand dealers. Pierce may be found in company of dealers, low horse dealers, & c., and the woman may seek em- ployment at laundries. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 23.— Nottingham ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 24th ult., a silver Geneva hunter, No. 27880, white dial,, believed, " JOHNSON, DERBY," stamped inside case; 1 silver curb single albert with silver heart pendant attached; 1 full length fawn coloured rainproof overcoat, Chester- field shape, collar same material, bone buttons to match, believed fly front, turned up cuffs, 2 oblique pockets, outside breast and ticket pockets inside, striped sleeve, no body lining; 1 hollow ground razor, " BOOTS, SHEFFIELD" stamped there- on ; 1 6d. stick of " FRAM" shaving soap; 1 shaving brush; and £ 4— HENRY STEWART, alias HARRY WILSON and BIGGINS, Office No. 2104- 06 ( Cases Nos. 90 and 91, 19th ult.), age 29„ height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes brown, medium build, " H. STEWART," sailor, girl, and " GOOD- BYE" right, " H," clasped hands, heart, and " TRUE LOVE " left forearm; dress, dark brown suit and cap, dirty white muffled. A fishermah; native of Hull. He took lodgings at a private house in this City, 24th ult., stated that he came from Liver- pool, and had obtained a situation at the electric piower station here, left the following morning, when he was seen wearing the stolen coat. Wiarrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. OXFORDSHIRE. 24.— Oxford ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 26th ult. JAMES, age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., spots on face, hair dark, clean shaved, small abscess mark right cheek; dress, brown mixture overcoat, black bowler hat with narrow brim, brown and green mixture coat, light vest with black stripes, navy blue serge trousers, white and blue spotted tie, brown lace boots, wore a thin gold watch chain and 2 gold rings. He took lodgings and on the following day stated he was going to the station to fetch his luggage; also stated he represented Bovril Co. Had with him a sanall brown hand bag. Warrant issued. DICK CAWLEY, age 25, height 6 ft. stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair ( curly) and moustache dark; drees, brown tweed false pretences— LEWIS JOHN JONES, age 41, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown, very talkative and YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 3° — Doncaster ( County).— For stealing £ 18 15a ( beneficial owner), at Thurnscoe, 6th ult.— WILLIAM YEAM, age 48, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, female tattooed on one arm, large scar one groin; dress, black jacket and overcoat, check breeches, cycle stockings, tweed hat. A tailor's traveller; native of Ashbourne, Derby- shire. Absconded 20th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Barnstaple. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. n.— Neath ( Borough).— For failing to sur- render to his bail at Glamorganshire Assize^, 25th ult., charged with attempting to obtain a Life Insurance Policy by forged instruments; also with plausible. An Insurance agent, formerly carried on business as a grocer. Absconded 12th ult. May endeavour to work his passage to America or Australia. Information to the Chief Constable, Neath. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing a Post Office Savings Bank Book, and £ 38 3s. 8d.— JOHN PATRICK COLLINS, age 24, height 6 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair black, blind left vest, light blue mixture trousers, black and white woollen scarf, black cap, lace boots. A collier; native of Lydbroolq, Forest of Dean. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hickes, County Police Office, Doncaster. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)— SHROPSHIRE. 31.— Whitchurch ( County).— For stealing a green leather purse, containing £ 1 12s. 6d., from his lodgings at Grindley Brook, 24th ult.— FRANK CHALLONER, age about 45 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, thin sharp features, hair grey, small moustache light grey; dress, dark grey overcoat, fawn colour jacket, grey trousers, jockey cap, light lace boots. Ap- pearance of a jockey. He travels the country giving tips at racing stables, farm houses, and at race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lucas, Whitchurch.
