KJBaiJL Ail communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, . NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken, upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be dearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and* i, f 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5- i to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rani; than Inspector, or analogous thereto. ATIOKrs. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. !•. The force u- hich causes particulars concerning deling/ tents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only: they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) mil be given on application. 14. Warrant issued. 4. — P Division.— For living on the earnings of prostitution— AUGUST GOTZ, alias GORTZ, age 51, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes brown, lady in heart, " Aug. Gotz, 1878," in blue ink right forearm; dress, dark grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat, wearing a heavy gold watch chain, £ 2 piece attached. A native of Elberfelt, Germany. Warrant issued. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For forging and uttering an authority for the payment of £ 8 8s.— WILLIAM GUELPHS RUT- LEDGE, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache light, eyes grey; wearing dark clothes. A solicitor's clerk; native of London. May be found in com- pany of socialists. Absconded about 8th December, 1908. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. DAVISON, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, moustache sandy; dress, black mourning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, narrow legs, black hard felt hat, usually carries a fawn colour mackintosh. An Insurance agent; native of Stockton- on- Tees. Has been connected with Insurance Companies in London, Liverpool, Bradford, Leeds, and New- castle- on- Tyne. Absconded 19th October, 1908. Macclesfield ( borough).— For obtain- ing money by false pretences in November last— ALFRED HALFORD, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., moustaehe and beard turning grey; dress, black suit, black soft felt hat, wears pince nez. He represented himself in the employ of the Royal Fire Insurance Company, Ltd., Manchester, and gave a receipt signed " Alfred Halford, Urmston, Manchester." He stays at private lodgings, pays a portion, and decamps. Wan- ant issued. Information to the Chief Constable. Macclesfield. CUMBERLAND. 9.- Cocker mouth ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Cockermouth Union— WILLIAM BRAD- SHAW, age 43, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., sitout build, broad shoulders, complexion fresh, thin face, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache light brown, eyes blue, small wart right side upper lip. Derby ( County).— For failing to appear to a witness summons, 11th ult.— BERNARD DOYLE, age 36, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, left hip bone diseased, and leg shorter than right, walks lame. A native of Derby. May seek employment at livery stables or farm houses. Believed to know Manchester and District well. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Richardson, Derby. 12.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing, from her lodgings, 9th ult., a lady's brown satin cloth three- quarter length coat, brown velvet trim- mings, brown and white striped lining, brown buttons, 2 patch pockets outside; 1 cotton blouse, white spots, black ground— SELINA THOR- LEY, age 18, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair brown, suffers with swollen legs; may be wearing the stolen property. A native of Mosboro'. She was discharged from the Chester- field Union Workhouse, lst ult., and may go into a similar Institution. 13 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 15th ult., a Jubilee sovereign, mounted as pendant— THOMAS SPEED, age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, face pock- marked, hair dark brown, eyes brown. A native of Chesterfield. Has served in the Militia and may endeavour to re- enlist. A good mouth organ player, and may be found playing' in the streets or public houses. DORSETSHIRE. ll.— Wimborne [ County).— For failing to surrender to his bail at Dorset Assizes, 15th October, 1908, charged with rape— GEORGE JAMES SAMMARS, age 39, height 5 ft. 8 in . complexion dark, hair dark brown ( inclined to curly), moustache and full beard, may now be clean shaved, eyes dark, scars top of head, one little finger deformed ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest,, cord breeches, leather gaiters. black soft f « lt liat. An expert tvpist and shorthand writer, and mav sieek emnloyment at agencies or as repairer; native of Stockton- on- Tees. Absconded 14th ult., and wrote from Bishop Auckland, 15th ult. Convicted at York and Huddersfield in 1907 of similar offences. He calls on solicitors and tries to obtain an advance on a legacy. which is due to a young woman bv whom he is accompanied, and who passes as his wife. Warrant issued. Has been convicted at Birmingham, Bristol, Liver- pool. and Warwick.— JAMES KITCHEN, alias GIER, MACK, BURKE, BTRD, & c., age 42, height 5 ft. 6 in., strong build, complexion dark, full face, hair and eyes brown, heavy moustache dark, hairy patch from right eyebrow to hair, 2 bum scars left forearm; dress, dark suit, blue Melton overcoat, bowler hat, brown boots, carries gloves. These men are expert afternoon house- breakers, usuallv effecting entrance by forcing the front door with a jemmy. For stealing £ 2. 26t, h ult., at Sticknev, while acting as housekeeper— ANNTE COLLEY, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion dark; dress, grey jacket and skirt, green gloves, dirty white straw hat, old boots or shoes ( may be wearing new ones). Absconded 26th ult. She was driven to Boston Station and there enquired the time for the train to King's Cross. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marshall, Spilsby. SHROPSHIRE. 25.— Oswestry ( County).- For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 10th Bit.— — JONES, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 9 in., good build, complexion fresh, rather long features, thick upper lip, sores thereon, large forehead, wrinkled, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue, piece broken off one front tooth', Welsh accent; dress, dark brown jacket, blue plaid vest, grey breeches, brown leather leggings, light blue or green! cap with dark stripes, heavy nailed boots, light colour leather watch guard, buckle fastener and a lady's silver watch. Had with him a light colour mackintosh, cycle cape, and a bicycle. He represented himself as am agent for the Farmers' Association, took lodg- ings for himself and another man, who would join him the following day. Stayed at Seethrog, near Brecon, 12th and 13th ult., and gave the name of Alleni, stated he was buying horses for a man at Liverpool, and arranged for several to be sent to a hotel, 16th ult. Last in Brecon about 12 months ago, and called himself Captain Allen, then stated he was buying horses for the Govern- ment. Said he had been in the Army, and had served 3 months for assaulting an officer, after which his discharge was purchased by his father. Absconded llt- h ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. MAY ( supposed false), age about 45, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( cut short) and thick moustache black, eyes dark; dress, long black coat, brown speckled trousers, brown tie, felt hat with high crown and flat top, lace boots. Carried a black glossy hand bag, containing pat- terns of cloth. Canvasses poor districts stating that he represents a local clothier, obtains orders and small deposits. Warrant issued. 27.— Lonyton ( County).— For failing to report - Licence- holder ROBERT MARFLEET, alias WRIGHT and BRASSINGTON, Office No. 1310- 00, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar centre of forehead; dress, blue reefer jacket, vest, and trousers, green cap, blue and white tie, Prison boots. A baker; native of Longton. Sentenced at Slu- ewsbury Assizes, 28th February, 1903, to 7 years penal servitude and remanet of former sen- tence for horse stealing. A native of Birmingham. Sentenced at Birmingham Sessions, lst April, 1908, to 9 months hard labour and 2 years supervision for larceny. Liberated 14th November last. 6891. MIDLOTHIAN. — Edinburgh ( City). — For obtaining money by fraud— CHARLES MEYER, alias BERG and MILLER, Office No. S/ 11741, age 30, height 5 ft. 4A in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown ( wears glasses), small scar left eyebrow, fleshy mole right eyelid; dress, dark suit and overcoat, black bowler hat. Several months ago he fitted up premises in this City, calling it " The Equitable Bank of Scotland." In the same vicinity he opened premises ostensibly as a whole- sale fancy goods merchant, under the title of " Charles Berg & Co.," b^ giving the " Bank" as a reference he induced a large number of traders, chiefly on the Continent, to supply him with goods for which he never intended to pay. By adver- tising largely in Provincial newspapers, " Money to Lend," he succeeded in obtaining numerous sums of money from intending borrowers from the so- called " Equitable Bank of Scotland." Sen- tenced at Central Criminal Court, 10th February, 1902, to 9 months hard labour for conspiracy to defraud, and he was concerned with others under the style of " Bankers" and " Advertising Con- tractors " of doubtful repute in Glasgow prior to beginning operations in this Citv. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. In formation to the Chief Constable, Edinburgh. GLOUOES TERSHIRE. 33.— Bristol [ City). For neglecting to main- tain his wife and family— CHARLES HOCKING, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and curly moustache dark, may be clean shaved. Is believed to have assumed the name of Clarke, and APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT { continued)— SURREY. 35,— Oxted ( County).— For stealing, 15tli ult., at Merstham, 8 fowls ( 6 recovered)— CHARLES CURTIS, age 46, height 5 ft. 3£ in., complexion fresh, hair ginger, eyes grey, clean shaved. A tramping labourer. Previously convicted at Reigate, Epsom, and Croydon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. He represented himself to be a solicitor, wrote to a person who was in the habit of dealing with commercial shares, stating that, ow- ing to the death of a client, he had been instructed to dispose of 40 shares in Boot's Pure Drug Com- pany, received payment, but failed to forward the share certificates. Arranged to receive letters at an office in London, and opened an account a/ t Farrow's Bank, Ltd., No. 1 Cheapside, B. C., so as to enable him to cash the cheques he received. Warrant issued. He opened an account at the London City and Midland Bank, paying in £ 5, drew a cheque on plain note paper for £ 4, and on 4th inst. a similar cheque for £ 5, which he induced the hotel proprietor to cash, and absconded without paying his bill.
