All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be takyn upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such, person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer o1 police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIOKTS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically ananyed by counties. 9. The force ivhicli causes particular* concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement. for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning They must be dearly written on one side of the paper 6. only: they must be hi the usual form, and accompanied hu a <• rrring letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland 1 ard. by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons' are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Sootland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows : -— ( a) All persons coming within Section 6, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's im- prisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. if) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, with- out option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens' Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Suspected person. Unlawful possession. Uttering counterfeit coin. Warehousebreaking. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been pre- viously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or con- victions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. D., J. McC. R. D." left, " M. A. C." and " R. D." right forearm. A quarryman; native of Glasgow. Sen- tenced at Edinburgh High Court, 11th January, 1901, to 8 years penal servitude and 7 years super- vision and remanet of former sentence for robbery. Liberated on licence, 20th June last, which expires 29th March, 1910. To be dealt with where found. Reported at Buxton, 6th ult., proceeding to Grindleford, but did not report there. 2.— E Division.— For stealing £ 10 19s. 6d., 12th May last— HENRY COHEN, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, prominent nose; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, black felt hat, sometimes wears frock coat and silk hat. A sponge merchant's traveller; native of Sydney, Australia. Is said to be well known at Glasgow and Belfast. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division. — For stealing £ 1 9s. 9d., 26th June last— EDWIN BARKER, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair and eyes dark brown; dress, dark mixture jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A clerk; native of London. May be found in company of Cohen, see Case No. 2. Warrant issued. 4.— E Division.— For stealing £ 1 9s. 9d., 26th June last^- THOMAS SHALL, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark grey mixture trousers, grey peak cap, nailed very dark; dress, dark jacket suit, black hard felt hat. He was employed as a clerk; native of London. Warrant issued. 5.— K Division.— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences— A. ANDREWS, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, slight impediment in speech; dress, blue serge coat and trousers, light fancy vest, green tie, straw hat. He represented himself as an assurance agent. Warrant issued. Q.— M Divisionm— For embezzling £ 11 6s 2d., 13th June last^- F. B. BRECONSHIRE. 1.— Brynmawr ( County) — For stealit g, £ 7 15s., 31st ult.— WILLIAM JEFFREYS, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache sandy, tattooed both arms, bracelet left wrist; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, brown vest, 2 buttons missing, grey cap. A journeyman bootmaker; native of Swindon. Has served in the Gloucestershire Regiment, and discharged as unfit. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Brynmawr. CHESHIRE. 8 — Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing at Cheadle, 3rd inst., a sewing machine, & c. Committed suicide. 10. — Middlewich ( County). — For night poaching— THOMAS HTJLME, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion and hair dark, moustache dark brown, beard about two weeks growth, slovenly appearance; dress, dark suit ( much worn), cap, clogs. A native of Biddulph Moor, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thompson, Middlewich. 11.— RunCOrn ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 22nd July and 23rd August— HARRY WILKES, age 27, height about 6 ft., complexion, hair ( inclined to curly) and eyes dark, of foreign and smart appear- ance; dress, grey suit and cap. Accompanied by his Wife, age 21, height about 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, cut mark on face; dress, green dress, brown hat. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. 12.— RunCOrn ( County).— For stealing 9s. ( by trick from a boy in the street), 29th ult.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, moustache supposed dark, leans forward when walking; dress, dark jacket, vest, and cap, grey trousers, tan colour boots ( blacked over). CUMBERLAND. 13.— Penrith ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 26th ult., a cheque for £ 2 ( which he cashed at bank, Lee); 1 hair brush, black ebony back; 1 black comb; 1 cap; and 6s. 6d.— STEPHEN BAIRSTOW, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., full face, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes ( right crossed) grej^, small scar left side of chin; dress, dark blue jacket suit, blue striped cap, strong lace boots. A farm labourer. Has been an inmate of the Calder Farm Reformatory, Mirfield. Warrant iasued. Information to Supt. Barron, Penrith. A MAN, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., well built, complexion fair, hair and moustache ( curled at ends) light brown, tattooed back of both hands, of smart appearance, London accent; dress, old brown lounge coat, torn at right elbow and pocket, stains on shoulders, blue serge vest and trousers, dark muffler, a pair of thb stolen boots, supposed dark cap. For obtaining £ 1 10s. l » y false pretences, 12th July last— ALFRED JOHN HARRISON, Office No. 457- 03, age 35, height 5 ft. 8| in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, mole left of neck. An electrical engineer; native of Leeds. May seek employment at electrical engineers, or found at Lodges of the R. A. O. B., of which Society he is believed to be a member. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. ESSEX. 14.— Colchester ( County).— FREDERICK W. POPE COX, Case No. 25, 31st July last, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. 15.— Romford ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Hornchurch, 29th ult., a dark rough cloth coat and vest with light stripes, nearly new — BENJAMIN WOODHOUSE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light plaid trousers, blue and white striped neckerchief, button boots ( toes turned upwards), may be wear- ing the stolen coat and vest. ERNEST WEST, age about 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., thick set, complexion tresh, hair dark, eyes blue, long eyelashes, broad nose, spring- ing gait, Yorkshire accent; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat. Carried an overcoat. Information to the Head Contable, Cardiff. 17.— Swansea ( Borough).— For stealing £ 3 from his lodgings— — SHEPHERD, age 39, height 5 ft. 10J in., stout build, square shoulders, complexion fair, hair ( thin on top) and moustache ( scraggy) light, front upper teeth missing; dress, brown suit with dark stripes, black bowler hat, brown boots, of shabby appearance. Stated he had been employed by a firm of brewers to fix letters on public house windows. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Swansea. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. ltf — Coleford ( County).— For shopbreaking at Bream, 21st ult., and stealing 2 pairs heavy nailed boots, size 7; several pairs leather laces, black and brown mohair laces; 1 small frail basket, flap over top, web handles; 1 reel of yellow thread; 1 shoemaker's apron and knife; and about 5s.— HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Winchester ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences— THOMAS EATON, alios JAMES RUSSELL, age 24, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, 2 females and bird left forearm, man's head and woman right forearm; dress, dark jacket, vest, and cap, brown riding breeches, brown leather leggings, laced at sides, green and black muffler. A native of Hoxton. Is a deserter from the 2nd Liverpool Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, County Police, Win- chester. HEREFORDSHIRE. 21. Hereford ( County). For stealing at Wellington, 7th inst., from a clothes line, 2 shirts ( recovered}— A MAN, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in,, stout buiid, stoops slightly, complexion fresh, hair ( rather long, turning grey), beard and moustache brown; dress, long dark jacket, large inside pockets, cardigan jacket, black cord trousers, blue muffler, grey cap. A tramping labourer. Is fond of talk- ing of weight lifting. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. ISLE OF ELY. 22.— Wisbech ( County).— For stealing a lady's silver watch and chain, coins attached; about 6 knives, forks, and spoons; 1 tin trunk, 31st ult.— ALICE MAUD BLOODSWORTH, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, wears glasses, walks badly on right foot; dress, new brown costume, brown lace boots.— RICHARD GRIFFITH, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark, tattooed both arms; dress, new brown suit, brown boots. I'd. — Bolton ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee MAURICE WALSH, alias MILLI- NER, Office No. 3022- 00 ( ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR 52, Series 5), age 31, height 5 ft. 1\ in., com- plexion pale, hair very light brown, eyes dark brown ( cataract right, left eyelid droops), scar front neck and left temple. A native of London. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 26th April, 1904, to 3 years penal servitude and 2 years super- vision for receiving. Liberated 4th August, 1906. e 206. He took lodgings with a widow, representing himself as an electrical engineer and Government Inspector of boilers, proposed marriage and to go abroad, then obtained the money from an auctioneer on the widow's goods. Appeared to be well acquainted with London, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, and South Walesi Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ross, Leigh. 25.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining food, lodgings, and 3s. by false pretences, between 23rd and 25th ult.— GRAHAM PIERCE, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, thin face, hair dark, clean shaved, of smart appearance; dress, blue serge suit, dark tie with white spots, bowler hat, lace boots. A native of London. Stated he was employed by a London firm, and had been transferred to Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 26.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For stealing a gold oval brooch, " 1837— 1897 " in front, small crown in centre; and a dark maroon woollen shawl— SARAH ELLIS, alias McMIL- LAN, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, wears deep fringe, scars back of left hand and thumb; supposed wearing a fawn colour waterproof, black skirt, green motor hat, low shoes. A domestic servant; native of Barrow- in- Furness. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. 27.— Bootle ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 7 9s. 6d., 4th inst.— ROBERT HOLWELL HUTCHIN- SON, age 16, height about 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair light brown, prominent nose, London accent; dress, blue serge jacket, dark mix- ture trousers, dark tie, grey cap, lace boots. A clerk; native of Exeter. Absconded 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28.— Epworth ( County).— Fcr stealing £ 5, 20th ult.— THOMAS BRIGHAM, age 18, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, long thin face, hair ( long) dark, one front upper tooth missing, woman and snake tattooed left arm, woman danc- ing right forearm, right palm injured ( bandaged); dress, dark jacket and vest, light brown trousers, torn at bottoms, dark check cap ( very large), light brown lace boots ( newly soled, heel pads). NORFOLK 29.— Holt ( County).— For s'eating. 24th ult., an " Allday" bicycle, black enamelled, lined red, 28 in. wheels, straight plated handle bars, white celluloid grips, black tips, both right tips missing, rat- trap pedals, Clifton Dunlop tyres, rim front brake, handle broken, black leather tool bag, new gas lamp, new plated pump, new rack parcel carrier over back wheel— WILLIAM HUMPHREY, age 24 to 26, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes grey, butterfly tattooed right wrist, sailor, cross guns left arm, has been operated on for varicose veins both legs; dress, navy blue suit, jacket double- breasted, dark wrapper, blue cap, patent leather peak, lace boots. Both natives of Norwich. 31.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing, 21st ult. from his lodgings, a lady's skirt; 1 marriage certificate ( latter discovered at Holt)— WIL- LIAM HUMPHREY, age about 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, recently operated on for varicose veins in legs; dress, blue jacket suit, trousers patched at seat, blue cap ( braided). Appearance of a fisherman. Will probably use the name Robert Newby Thomas, the name on the certifi- cate. Information to the Chief Constable, Norwich. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 82.— Peterborough ( Liberty oj)— For steal- ing, 17th ult., 2 beasts ( recovered)— HAROLD MARTIN HOYELL, alias WILLIAM TURNER and PEACOCK, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion and moustache dark, eyes hazel, scar between eyebrows; dress, dark grey jacket suit, hard felt hat or cap, brown boots. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 33 — R Division. — For stealing, 14th ult., from Officers' Quarters, Cambridge Barracks, Wool- wich, a gold watch and chain; 1 gold match box} 1 gold sovereign purse, containing £ 1 10s.; and a silver watch in leather wristlet, crest, a dragon, on gold— Licence- holder FREDERICK TASNEY, alia* TERRY, Office No. 2824- 00 ( Case No. 2, 28th ult.), age 28, height 5 ft. 8 Ln., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar back of right hand and under right eye; dress, blue serge suit and cap, brown canvas shoes, may be wearing military officer's uniform. A native of Woolwich. The portrait is a fairly good likeness, but he looks older, and he may now be clean shaved or wearing very slight moustache. ESSEX. 86.— Brentwood [ County).— For embezaling £ 120— CECIL HARRY EARTHY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., square shoulders, rather stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, clean 6haved, eyes light grey or blue, club left foot which he throws forward when walking, placing heel only on ground; dress, dark tweed suit, long LANCASHIRE. 34.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing cloth- ing, from a workhouse hospital, 15th ult.— JAMES WOODS, alias HARRISON and AMBROSE DONOVAN, Office No. S13005, age 47, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown. He was arrested 22nd July last for stealing lug- gage from a railway station. Owing to an injury received since his arrest he was sent to a work- house hospital, 7th ult. The case was adjourned for 28 days, and he was bound over to appear at end of that time, but escaped from the hospital 15th ult., taking with him the clothing of another inmate.
