POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1908. VOL. XXV., No. 2518. 1, All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost jf engraving sketches. J. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if ths. name of sxich person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. riONB. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and. as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only: they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. A native of Great C'ornard, Sudbury, Suffolk. 3. — P Division.— For stealing ( servant) £ 5 lis. 6d.— HARRY OLIVO, an Italian, age 23, height 5 ft. 1 in., stiff build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache black, eyesi brown, small sear right cheek borne, very thick lips, car- ries head as though looking down; dress, dark , green check jacket suit, light green cap, green tie, button boots. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. • 4.— V Division.— For embezzling £ 1 18s. 10d., 5th inst.— THOMAS WILLIAM NEECH, Office No. 163- 99, age 37, height 5 ft. 9j in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar left forearm, back left hand, 2 right of forearm ; dress, grey mixture suit and cap, lace boots. A native of Maidstone. Warrant issued. 5.— X Division.— For inciting to murder — FRANK PAUL SMITH, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, blue overcoat, deep collar, dark striped jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, grey cap, lac © boots. Stated he was an advertising agent. Ac- companied by a woman. ( See Case No. 10.) Warrant issued. 10.— Hreat Marlow ( County). — For obtaining, 6th inst., by false pretences, a brown leather brief bag, 18 in. long; 1 brown leather Marlboro' bag, 16 in. long, nickel fittings— — WEEKS, age 23, height 5 ft! 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, 2 front teeth missing; dress, full length brown cloak, black fur boa, light' grey skirt, cream blouse trimmed lace, brown straw hat with large crown and small brim, old shoes. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( CONTRA J- dealer. ( See Case No. 41, 7th inst.) LOVE- DAY, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., thick set, complexion, hair, and moustache dark. The horses were booked to Liverpool Street, 6th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 12.— Crewe County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences— D. PETERS, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; wearing dark overcoat, black hard felt hat. He called upon a local tradesman and stated that he was a traveller for Fry & Sons, Chocolate Manu- facturers, Bristol, and would supply the shop- keeper with 2 fancy show cases on payment of a deposit of 5s. Peters obtained the money and gave a receipt on a printed form. Appears identical with man, Cases Nos. 28 and 29, 17th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 13. - Macclesfield ( Borouy/ i).— For ob- taining money by false pretences, 22nd ult.— S. PETERS ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexioai pale, hair and mous- tache ( heavy) dark, of good appearance. He calls on shopkeepers and represents himself as an agent for Fry & Sons, Cocoa Manufacturers, Bristol, and © ibtains sums varying from 2s. 6d. to 5s. as deposits for show cases shortly to be delivered, and gives rieceipts stamped with a rubber stamp, " Fry & Sons" and signed " S. Peters." Supposed identical with S. Smith, Case No. 44, 22nd Novem- ber, 1907. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maccles- field. DERBYSHIRE. li.— Renishaw ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, at Eckington, 1st inst. — A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, very large teeth; dress, pepper- and- salt coloured overcoat, grey vest with red spots, dark trousers, tigac titling, light: cap, lar* e boots, carried a packet of blue papers in pocket of overcoat. He calls on small shopkeepers and states he is a Government official, and asks for money, which he states is for the registration of their premises by Board of Trade. If successful in obtaining any money he writes the shopkeeper's name, trade, & c., on one of his bill- heads, obtains his signature, and takes the diocu- ment away with him, stating that a receipt will be forwarded from the Board of Trade. Warrant issued. 15. — Renishaw ( County).— For stealing from their lodgings at Cresswell, 27th ult., a lady's 9 ct. gold keeper ring, flat, stock mark " 176" scratched inside; and £ 1 3s. 6d. — THOMAS HEWITT, age 21, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, short sighted, clean shaved; dress, dark blue suit, muffler, grey striped cap, brown button boots. Native of Dudley, Staffs.— GEORGE DAVIS, age about 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved, scar or lump under jaw; dress, dark coat and vest ( diouble- breasted), dark striped trousers, striped muffler, light striped cap, light lace boots. Supposed a native of Dudley, Staffs. Colliers or labourers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 16. - Chudleigh ( County). — ARTHUR HILL, Case No. K), 20th December, 1907. Warrant withdrawn. 17.— Exeter ( City)— For stealing £ 2 17s. 2d. — Professor MORTIMER, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., rather stout build, hair ( dyed, brushed into a curl on top) dark, moustache ( dyed) brown, peculiar expression of eyes, red mark on shin about size of a pea, tattooed left forearm; dress, frock coat, silk hat, grey trousers, wearing gold chain, pince- nez, fastened to vest by a safety pin, a gold ring, set 1 diamond, sometimes wears a dark overcoat, carries an umbrella and brown kid gloves. A medical specialist of Berkly College, Boston, U. S. A. He came to' this city about a fortnight ago and en- gaged furnished apartments, had a brass plate on front gate, " Dr. Mortimer, U. S. A., Medical Specialist," thereon, and a number of bills printed in which he represented he was able to cure any disease. He informed intending patients that they suffered from a certain disease and guaranteed to cure them, but refused to commence teatment until his fee ( generally £ 3 or £ 4) was paid. He gave a reciept for the money, " Cure guaranteed or mouey refunded" written thereon. Absconded 1st ill- t.— Accompanied by a wotuan, stated to be his wife, age about 28 to 33, short and1 stout, com- plexion fair, hair dark; dress, brown velvet coat and skirt, drab felt hat, also wears a threequarter- length brown coat with high grey fur collar, and carries a grey muff. Their luggage consisted of a large brown canvas trunk, half round top, 2 black boxes ( 1 studded with brass nails, containing medical instruments). Warrant issued. DURHAM. is.— Darlington ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 2 gold guards ( recovered)— THOMAS COATES, alias TOM DENT, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, small scar outer corner of left eye, of smart appearance; dress, dark overcoat, grey Scotch tweed trousers, brown leather leggings, grey cap, white knitted gloves, boots supposed Kay make. A farm labourer; native of Richmond, Yorks. Previously convicted at Dover, Milnthorpe, and Lancaster. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davison, Darlington. ESSEX. 19.— Southend ( County).— For stealing ( servant), 23rd ult., an old silver keyless watch, Italian make; 1 black leather portmanteau, 18 in. long, 12 in. wide— OLIVER RICHARDSON, age 18, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, blue jacket, fancy wool vest, light trousers, grey over- coat, P. & O. cap, laoe boots. A hotel porter; native of Southend. Warrant issued. 20.— Southend ( C'fUnty).— For embezzling £ 3 18s.— JAMES DONOVAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, full face, hair ( turning grey) and eyes dark, clean shaved, ad- dicted to drink; dress, dark jacket suit, black overcoat, bowler hat, lace boots. A clerk. Has been engaged selling postoards. Supposed pre- viously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. zr.- Thorpe- le- Soken ( County).— ior deserting his two children, leaving them charge- able to the Tendring Union — FREDERICK ARTHUR JAMES, age 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hjair dark brown, eyes blue, broken nose. A labourer. May seek employment on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cowell, Thoirpe- le- Sokep GL OUCESTERSHIRE. 2 .- Cheltenham ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 5 by false pretences— JOSEPH MAYSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair and moustache dark brown; dress, dark tweed suit, bow tie, wears gold ring with flat top, initials " J. M." thereon. A labourer; supposed a native of Manchester. May seek employment in market gardens. Absconded 3rd inst. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 23.— Bristol ( City).—* or illegally pledging a camera, 8th ult.— CHARLES BLECKINGER, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., hair light brown, moustache ( waxed at ends) ginger, prominent nose; dress, dark overcoat, vertical pockets, dark grey Norfolk suit, 1 pair knickers as pants, dark stockings, black lace boots, all shabby. A photo- grapher; native of Austria. Speaks good English. Will probably seek employment at photographers and picture postcard printers, and generally stays at labour homes and shelters. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. '. 4 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 1 9s., from his lodgings, 3rd inst.— MALCOM DOUG- LAS GRAHAM, age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, ^ jjir dark, moustache ( slight) light; dress, brown suit, fawn coloured overcoat, green tie, brown boots. It is believed he calls upon clergymen for the purpose of begging, as he left behind him a book containing the names and addresses of clergy men throughout the country. Supposed native of London. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a brown she ass; set of black leather harness; a car, body and shafts light blue, picked out red, Ted wheels; and an organ, " A24 arm, registered No. 1198," stamped inside, repaired with a piece of iron on top of keys, " Alfonso Mattia" cut in lid of box in front of car— TWO MEN ( 1st, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark ( blind); dress, dark suit. 2nd, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, dark suit). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 26 — Bournemouth ( County).— For ob- taining goods by false pretences— W. BULLOCK, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 to 6 in., complexion fresh, full round face, hair and eyes dark, of good address; dress, dark blue nurse's costume or plain dark costume and motor hat. Warrant issued. 27.— Bournemouth ( County).— For steal- ing, 4th inst., a carpenter's bag with wooden bot- torn; 1 hammer; 1 shave hook; 1 chisel; 1 putty knife; 1 glass cutter; 2 stripping knives; 1 2- ft. rule; 2 paper rollers ( 1 with leather cover); 1 pair pliers; 1 pair scissors; 1 hand chisel; 2 brad- awls ; 2 sheets glass paper; 1 painter's white jacket— A MAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, dark suit, grey tweed cap, carried a carpet bag. Appearance of a painter or plasterer. Stated he was a native of Littlehampton. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 28.— Winchester ( City).- Yor embezzle- ment — FREDERICK CLIFFORD KNAPP, age 39, looks older, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes ( rather sunken) blue, carries head slightly forward, walks badily, speaks fluently; dress, dark grey lounge suit, dark cloth overcoat, velvet collar, black hard felt hat, green silk tie, lace boots, carried an old brown portmanteau. A grocer's traveller. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Winchester. 29 — Southampton ( Borough).— For sieal- ing a dust- coloured mackintosh, green plaid lining— ARTHUR MORRIS, age 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair light; dress, dark brown suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 30 — Southampton ' Bnrouah^.— For steal- ing an 18 ct. gold lever watch, No. 34573, " Thomas Isaacs" engraved on back, and a 9 ct. gold curb chain, green and red stone seal attached — ROBERT CARR, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair ( curly in front), dark brown; dress, black coat, navy blue serge trousers, flap fronts, blue fancy guernsey, " White Star Line" in white thereon, black serge cap. A seaman ; native of Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southamp- ton. KENT. 31 — Gravesend ( Borough).— For stealing a " Rover" bicycle, Bowden inverted brakes, black enamelled, front rim brake, rat- trap pedals, raised handle bars, carrier on front, plated lamp — EDWARD EDSELLER, age 44, height 5 ft. 7 in., heavy dark moustache, deaf; dress, blue suit and overcoat ( velvet collar), black tie, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Blackpool 1 Borough).— For stealing, 7th inst., 4 £ 5 Bank of England notes and £ 2— CLIFFORD CONWAY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, siharp features, bald on crown of head, slight moustache brown, slightly deaf, uses cotton wool in left ear, of good address, turns his feet out- wards, cut on third left finger, and may be ban- daged; dress, blue jacket, grey trousers, or new suit. A hotel waiter or second boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. 33.— Sal ford ( Borough).— For failing to re- port— Licence- holder THOMAS KELLY, alias THOMAS CURLEY, THOMAS O'BRIEN, and PATRICK HIGGINS, Office No. 2404- 00, age 70, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( partly bald), eyes grey, all right fingers con- tracted, top of 3rd right deficient, A mason; native of Dublin. Sentenced at Salford Sessions, 23rd October, 1905. to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 25th January, 1908. K W cf. 271. Left Glasgow, 29th January, 1908, for London, accom- panied by a girl, age about 5 years. ( Appre- hended, see Case No. 101.) Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. James Russell Motion, 266 George Street, Glasgow, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Hall. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. M.— C Division.— For obtaining, 27th ult., £ 750, by personation and fraud— CADWAL- LADER EDWARDS, alias WILSON WIN- STANLEY EDWARDS and CAPTAiN ED- WARDS, Office No. 1469- 05, age 47 ( looks younger), height 6 ft. If in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown ( thin) mous- tache ginger ( curled), eyes blue, scar both eye- brows and on nose, fourth left finger contracted, of smart appearance, well tended hands, good teeth and excellent address. The portrait is not a good one of him ; wearing smart, dark frock overcoat ( velvet collar), patent leather boots, black hard felt hat, which he wears slightly tilted. Warrant issued. S." and " 18," on back ; 1 silver framed mirror, bevelled glass, size of cabinet photograph frame, oblong, plush back; 1 silver mounted watch case for dressing table, large watch, keyless, " Argentan. Swiss" inside; 1 small silver mounted clock, square, ring at back forming stand, No. 1157c9 ; 1 silver mounted glass scent bottle, round; 1 do. alabaster smelling bottle, round, ball at top ; 1 3ilver miniature book, ring at top; silver top of part of a manicure set ; 1 fine gold chain, belcher pattern, balls at intervals; 1 pearl and turquoise horseshoe brooch, broken ; 2 turquoise scarf pins ; 1 gold pencil case, fluted, ring at top ; 1 gold pin, centre stone missing; backs of two gold studs; meerschaum cigar holder, gold mounted, in case ; 1 silver card case, circular, monogram " H.
