All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICH GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases whxre a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits cf persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically airanyed by counties. The force which causes paiiiculars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, ana accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRUST 1 — D Division.- For obtaining by false pretences, during September last, a long dark tweed Chesterfield waterproof overcoat, 2 pockets inside, 2 do. outside, stitched cuffs, lined black silk; 1 black faced cloth costume, three- quarter- length coat, trimmed green embroidery on white silk, skirt do., lined silk; 1 white twill serge coat and skirt, trimmed white cream silk and embroidery, lined white glace silk; 1 coat and skirt, Tussore silk costume, trimmed green velvet, unlined; 1 lady's black faced cloth coat, trimmed black braid, green velvet and fancy green embroidery, lined to waist with white satin, lower part black satin; 1 suede leather bodice, lined brown silk— JOHN or WILLIAM REID, age 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, small eyes ( wears gold rimmed spectacles), sharp features, very erect, upper teeth stopped1 with gold ( very noticeable), speaks slowly with an American accent, invariably smoking a cigar; well dressed, and wears a silk hat. Sup- posed an American. Known in Paris and New York. Accompanied by a Woman ( supposed his wife), age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion very sallow, hair auburn ( sup- posed dyed), small eyes, full face; dresses well, and' wears long fine gold neckchain, small pearls at intervals, gun- metal watch and lorgnette at- tached ; also a ring, set 1 black and 1 white pearl. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 2.— For forging and uttering a chequo for £ 62 3s.— CHARLES UNGERE, a Frenchman, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache black, eyes dark brown, pronounced foreign appearance; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dress trousers, dark grey overcoat, black hard felt hat, wearing pince- nez ( rimless). Is said to have been a ship's steward, a brilliant book- keeper, and fond of chess. Absconded 28th ult., and has recently expressed a desire to go to Argentina. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. OA M BRIDGES HIRE. 3.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For Stealing silk from several shops, 16th ult.— A WOMAN, who gave the names of ALLEN, ADAMS, and LISTER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown; dress, dark grey three- quarter length jacket, black skirt, black sailor hat. ( Supposed identical with Mary Ann King, alias Giles, Jones, & c., Office No. 2443- 01.) 4.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing 3rd ult., a vest ( recovered)— WILLIAM SMITH, alias ANDERSON, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, clean shaved ; dress, dark blue jacket, brown vest and trousers, . light cap, lace boots. Has been employed' by a roundabout proprietor. Is said to belong to Strat- ford, Essex. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. DERBYSHIRE. 5.— C best or field ( Borough).— For obtaining 17s. 6d., by false pretences 12th Septem- ber last— CHARLES NORRIS, age 35 to 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald) dark, moustache dark brown, eyes dark ( right missing), may be wearing shade; generally wears shabby clothes, hard hat. A native of Manchester. He was employed by the Great Central Railway Co. as a canvasser for their Guide and Gazeteer, his agreement ter- minated in March last, but still calls on trades- men and obtains money. Has visited many towns in the Midland Counties. Warrant issued. 6— Chesterfield ( Borough)— For steal- ing ( bailee), a Yost typewriter, No. 4/ 41011, 21st ult.— FRED NICHOLLS, alias HELLIWELL, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) brown, moustache very light, eyes blue; dress, blue serge cuiti, light overcoat, black hard hat, bow tie, has also a light tweed suit with very long coat. A butcher. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chester- field. SVENDSEN, alias MARTIN, age about 35, height 5 ft; 9 or 10 in., complexion swarthy, long thin face, slightly blotched, high cheek bones, hair and slight moustache dark, may now be clean shaved, one tooth left side of upper jaw missing; dress, dark brown suit, light grey cap, overcoat, strong lace bootsj thick brown kid gloves, carried a small brown hand bag, initials " M. N. E." on front. Represented himself as a traveller for a firm of cattle spice manufacturers. Information to the Chief Constable, Hartlepool. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 8 — Bristol ( City .— For Rtea'ing £ 8. 2nd ult.— MARKS PATKIN, a Russian Jew, age 17, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, slightly freckled face, hair black, curled on forehead; dress, dark suit, light cap. Speaks broken English, and1 stated he was a locksmith. Ab- soonded 3rd ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 10.— Fare ham ( County).— For stealing various articles of furniture and1 bed linen ( partly recovered)— WILLIAM HANDEL, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark; dress, navy blue suit, old black Sand white cap, army boots— BETTY HANDEL, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion ( blotchy) fail-, hair brown, eyes crossed; dress, grey coat, white blouse, navy blue skirt, red petticoat, brown felt hat, trimmed feathers ( representing a bird), may be wearing a light brown mackintosh. Carman, Fareham. 11.— Gosport ( County),— For leaving his wife chargeable to the Alverstoke Union— HENRY DANIELS, age 57, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, high forehead, hair dark, moustache ( turning grey) ginger, may be wearing side whiskers or beard, eyes grey. M. G. L.," anchor, flag inside left forearm; dress, old brown clothes and cap. A hawker; native of Hereford. He travels the country with a donkey and cart and a small boy, collecting rags, selling earthen- ware and rock salt. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. LANCASHIRE. 15.— Reedley { County ).— For stealing a set of harness ( recovered)— A MAN, age 26 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes ( large) grey; dress, dark blue jacket ( 4 pearl buttons on pocket flaps, and slit each side) and vest, grey plaid trousers, cap, lace boots. Has been a seaman. Also served in the Lancashire Fusiliers. Previously convicted at Cardiff, Bristol, Church, Wakefield Quarter Sessions, and Bolton Borough. Was last seen, 24th inst., going to Accrington from Burnley. Information to Supt. Barnett, Skerton. 17. — Liverpool ( Otty).— Licence - holder JOSEPH JENNINGS, Office No. 1394- 01, Case No. 40,18th ult., not now wanted, having repotted at Southampton. lS.— Soiltliport ( Borough),— For stealing ( lodgings), 24th ult., a lady's gold English lever watch, key wind, " No. 5781," and " 10203" scratched near keyhole, open face, gold coloured dial, steel hands; 1 lady's 18 ct. gold English lever watch, key wind, engraved back, gold coloured dial; 1 long gold cable pattern guard, broken in several places, tied with cotton; 1 gold curb bracelet, gold heart pendant attached— — MITCHELL, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair dark, mous- tache light; dress, navy blue suit ( trousers newly pressed), black hard felt hat, lace boots. Stated he came from Manchester, and had obtained a situation with a local auctioneer. Left behind a large leather trunk, containing a box of soil. li- Souithport ( Borougn.).— For stealing ( lodgings) 2 ladies' small black leather purses; and £ 20, 22nd ult.— LEONARD D. BATES, age about 18, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., strong build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, dark grey striped suit, dark greenish overcoat, black cap, lace boots, usually wears knickers. A good pianist. Stated he was a native of Birmingham. He has been employed as a hair- dresser's assistant. Supposed to have been on a training- ship, and has expressed a desire to go to Canada. LEICESTERSHIRE. 20.— Market Harborough ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences ( not as stated in Case No. 41, 25th ult.)— A MAN, giving the name of MAJOR H. H. BUTLER, supposed alias O. H. FULTON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., moustache dark grey, waxed at ends, military appearance; dress, grey suit, straw hat. — A WOMAN, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion very fair, hair auburn. These persons are wanted in a number of places for ob- taining money by fraud in the following manner : — They took lodgings at a small village near this town, and arranged with a tobacconist t<* receive letters for them, then answered advertisements in the London Morning Post for cook or housemaid, the application being made in the name of ' Catherine Morgan, and testimonials given Morgan in name of Mrs. Butler. When terms were arranged, Mrs. Butler wrote representing that Morgan was short of money, and asked for railway fare, generally from £ 1 to £ 1 10s., to enable her to get to the place. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Market Harborough. false pretences— JOHN MAGARRY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, Scotch accent, of military ap- pearance; dress, blue suit. Id., 21st ult.— RAYrMOND LOVELL, age 15, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on right wrist; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, red ink stain down front of each, light grey trousers, straw hat. A native of Loughborough. Absconded 21st ult. May en- deavour to obtain employment on board ship with a view to proceeding to the United States. Warrant issued. LINLITHGO WSHIRE. 21. — Linlithgow ( County).— For fraud ( photographic, 2 cases), and obtaining money by OXFORDSHIRE. 23.— Oxford ( City).— For obtaining £ 100 by false pretences, 10th September, 1907— WILLIAM SCOBELL EVANS, age 68, height about 5 ft. 6 in., weight about 14 stones, complexion fresh, long features, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, tuft in front which he brushes back, clean shaved, eyes supposedT blue, growth about the size of a walnut under right side of jaw, sitoops silghtly; dress, dark blue suit, dark blue rough overcoat, black tie, black bowler hat. Late of Newbury, Berks. He was employed as secretary to a Local Building Society. Absconded 25th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oxford. PERTHSHIRE. 2 L— Dunblane ( County).— For obtaining 4 £ 5 Bank of Lag and notep, numbers " 55942 to 14 55945. by a fraudulent cheque on the New Zealand Bank, London— ARTHUR OLIPHANT, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, prominent nose, clean shaved; dress, dark jacket suit, small white stripe, over- coat of same material, round felt hat, brown gaiters. SHROPSHIRE. 25.— Oswestry ( County).— Information re- lating to JOHN GRUNDY, Case No. 53, 16th August, cancelled. 26.— Wellington ( County). — For travel- ling on the Great Western Railway without paying their fares, with intent to defraud, 21st August last— CHARLES McKENZIE, qluis WOOD, age about 29, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache dark.— THOMAS JONES, age about 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair light, moustache sandy. They are pedlars, and frequent fairs and markets, sell brushes, toys, flowers, & c. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Fulcher, Wellington. SUFFOLK ( West). 28. — Brandon ( f^ oun. t. y\— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM ERNEST KNIGHTS, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion, pale, small features, hair ( bald on top) and mous- tache dark, bad front teeth, talks slightly through his nose; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey tweed breeches, grey overcoat and cap, brown leggings and boots. A native of Brandon. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Reeve, Brandon. SURREY. 29.— Hersh am ( County1.— For steal in t?, ( bailee), 21st ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— W. F. SMALL ( supposed false), age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, rather full face, hair brown, clean shaved, front upper teeth uneven, when in conversation he has a habit of tapping his teeth with thumb nail; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat. Represents himself as an American dentist. Had with him a small oblong silver- plated box and artificial teeth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marks, Hersham. SUSSEX ( East). 30.—— For failitjg to report— Licence- holder GEORGE WRIGHT, Office No. 3037- 00, age 65, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue grey, scar left eyebrow, 4th right finger contracted; dress tweed suit and cap. A labourer; native of Belfast. Sentenced at Lewes Assizes, 19th November, 1903, to 5 years penal servitude for indecent assault on a male per- son. Licensed 29th August, 1907. x d 21. Warrant issued. 31.— Lewe& ( County — For failing to report— Licence- holder FRANK GALE, alias BEIRNE, BURNE, and BROOKS, Office No. 3320- 01, age 45, height 5 ft. 10J in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin in front) light brown, eyes blue, projecting teeth, scar left eyebrow and bridge of nose, fleshy lump left side head, right wrist dislocated, 4th right finger crooked, right foot deformed. A commission agent; native of Smallthorne, Staffs. Sentenced at Glamorgan Assizes, 20th November, 1903, to 5 years penal servitude for obtaining money by false pretences. SI.— Birmingham ( City).— For obtaining £ 200 by false presences— JAMES MICHAEL, alias SHAW, age 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., very stout build, weight 18 stones, complexion fresh, full round face, double chin, hair very dark, clean shaved, eyes brown, hooked nose, of Jewish ap pearance; dress, dark morning suit ( rather tight fitting trousers), bowler hat ( wide brim). A poultry merchant; native of London. Supposed a betting- man, and well- known at pigeon shoot- ing clubs in London. He advertised for a partner in a poultry business, and by producing books with fictitious entries, obtained the money. Warrant issued. Not £ o be arrested out of the United Kingdom. WILTSHIRE. 33.— Devizes ( County).— On commitment warrant for using obscene language— EDWIN HAYWARD, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexon fresh, hair light brown, moustache sandy, eyes grey, lizard, female, Union Jack, right fore- arm, " E. H. Ward " and 2 marks left forearm; dress, black coat, rather tight fitting, old dark trousers and cap, sometimes wears cord breeches and gaiters. A native of Evergreen, Gloucester. Previously convicted at Malmesbury of cruelty to a bull. Information to Supt. Everett, Devizes. 31.— Salisbury ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- holder EDWARD FORD, Office No. 1335- 04, age 35, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue, scar over right temple and back left hand; dress, grey suit and cap, trousers, short and tight fitting. A carpenter; native of Southampton. Sentenced1 at Winchester Assizes, 23rd November, 1904, to 3 years penal servitude and remanent of a former sentence for burglary. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 35.— Otley { County).— For stealing, ( bailee) a " Clyde" motor cycle, 3- h. p., low tension, magneto ignition, maker Waite, Leicester, Clincher tyre, front wheel, " Continental " back do., back pedal brake on belt rim, portion of front brake missing, rubber belt, seat pin reversed, large horn, tank enamelled, aluminium colour, picked out green, engine and carburettor stamped " Simms," bearing " Registered Plate, C 670"— HERBERT THORNTON, alias CRAWSHAW, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair dark,; wearing dark clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Strain, Otley. 36.— JBradford ( City).— For stealing a red brown dressing gown, nearly new; 1 blue serge suit, black lining, ordinary pockets, nearly new; 1 pair black box- calf lace boots, size 7, toe caps, new; 1 white ( netting) cricket shirt; 1 box of compasses— — FINLAY ( supposed false), age about 23, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blood- shot, of theatrical appearance; dress, dark check lounge suit, drab overcoat, dark can. lace boots. He took lodgings, 6th inst., and stated that he had come from Ireland, and absconded the following day, leaving behind a gentleman's umbrella, straight handle, " Ingham " frame, 2 silver mounts ( 1 en- graved " Rev. CITY $$ F LONDON. 37.— For sending letters demanding money with menaces— FRANZ VON VELTHEIM, alias BARON VON VELTHEIM and KARL FRIED RICH MORITZ LUDWIG KURTZE, age 49, height 6 ft. 2 in, well built, complexion sallow, hair and moustache brown, eyes bluish- grey, gun- powder marks over right eyelid, rather large nose, of smart appearance; dresses well and usually wears a fawn colour soft felt hat. A native of Hahausen, Gandersheim, Brunswick. He was arrested in Paris, 19th September last, with a view to his extradition to London, but he has been released by the French authorities, and may come to this country under an assumed name.
