All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases wlixre a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for th. e payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits cf persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance foi• cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 6. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer o) not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged ly counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12 All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, Ac., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SO UGH 1 METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— G Division.— For stealing iron and brass ware— HARRY MOORE, age 38, height 5 ft 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; dress, dark jacket suit, white muffler, P. & O. cap, lace boots. A native of Manchester. Warrant issued. 2.— S Division.— For stealing clothing from their lodgings— ANDREAS GEORGE PORTER, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( short) light, clean shaved, eyes grey, scar back of head; dress, old blue serge suit, grey cap, lace boots. Fond of talking of Canada. A bricklayer; native of Wood Green.— ELIZA PORTER, nee HOWARD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark, nose inclined to right, bad teeth; dress, long blue cloak, brown or fawn colour skirt, white silk blouse, brown straw hat, trimmed chiffon. A native of Bishop's Stortford. Accompanied by 2 boys ( twins), age 4; wearing sailor suits, man- of- war hats. Warrant issued. 3.— IW Division.— For embezzling 3s. 8d. — PERCY WEAVERS, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown, addicted to drink; dress, blue serge suit, green cap, brown boots. A baker's roundsman; native of Sudbury. Warrant issued. 4.— W Division.— For obtaining two horses by worthless cheques — THOMAS A. SYRES, age 46, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache brown, one leg missing, usually walks with crutch and stick: dress, dark jacket suit, green cap. A fishmonger and low horse dealer. Supposed a native of Walworth. May be found at horse fairs, & c., in the provinces. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BRECONSHIRE. 5.— Brynmawr ( County).— For obtaining credit by false pretences, between 17th and 21st ult.— — TAYLOR ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion very red, hair and whiskers greyish red, wears glasses; dress, black frock coat and vest, shabby, baggy trousers, rubber cuffs, black bowler hat, brown shoes, carried a brown sample bag or case. He repre- sented! that he was an agent for a firm of pub- lishers, Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hand, Brynmawr. CUMBERLAND. 6.— Penrith ( County).— For stealing title deeds, between lst Februarv and 21st September, 1906— SAMUEL ARCHIBALD, alias ARCHI- BALD WILSON and JOHNSTONE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., corpulent but active, hair and moustache dark, eyes dark brown, nose red and rather thick at end, strong eyebrows, wears glasses. A solicitor's clerk. During the last few months he has had a confectioner's shop in Nottingham, which business his wife managed while he was employed as a chef. Absconded 7th ult. He has obtained money from solicitors and money lenders, and as all the title deeds havel not yet been disposed of, he may attempt to obtain money on those he still possesses. ( See Case No. 16, 2nd November, 1906.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ross, Penrith. DERBYSHIRE. 7.— Chesterfield ( Borough). — For ob- taining, by) false pretences, 28th ult., a dark brown horse, rising, 3 years, 15£ hands, half- legged, white mark down face, from forehead to nose, 2 hind and 1 fore feet white, slight sand crack off forefoot, off hind thigh chafed, turns fore foot inwards, docked, flat shod front, and heels on hind shoes; a grey mare, rising 4 years, 15| hands, half- legged, near hind hock slightly swollen, off hind foot white, small scar outside near hind leg below hock, docked— A MAN, who gave the name of E. WARD, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stiff build, complexion ruddy, hair dark; dress, dark brown suit, black hard hat, wearing a gold curb ring. Accompanied' by a Man, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light to sandy; dress, greenish suit, cap. He opened an account at the United and Counties Bank, Ltd., Sheffield, 27th ult., in the name of Joseph Lee, by depositing £ 5, and ob- tained a cheque book numbered from B 125281 to B 125311, and) on 28th ult., attended Chesterfield Fair, where he bought the above horses, paying for them with cheques signed E. Ward from this book Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chester- field. DUMFRIESSHIRE. S.— Dumfries ( County).— FOT fraud, by worthless cheque, 26th ult.— A. H. ROSS, age about 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, brown jacket suit, thin grey overcoat, black billycock hat or grey cap, lace boots. MUNROE, alias GEORGE CAMPBELL, age 40 to 50, height 6 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache black: well dressed. A horse dealer; native of Gosforth. He and a woman, May Humble ( in custody), obtained goods on a month's credit and decamped without paying for same. He is also wanted for stealing horses, harness, and a Governess car; was formerly a butcher, and1 is well known among low horse dealers. May be found at fairs, sale yards, & c. He buys horses, hires stables, and advertises in local papers, gives guarantees with horses on trial, which are found to be worthless and returned to him, then refuses to refund the purchase money. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 10 — Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by a forged advance note— THOMAS CLARKE, a? e 31, height 5 ft. 3f in., rather stout build, com- plexion fair, hair light, moustache light brown, eyes blue, horseshoe, whip and " Good Luck" right forearm, cut scar right eyebrow, two small boil scars centre back of neck; dress, black morning coat and vest, light trousers, bowler hat. A carpenter; native of Cardiff. May seek employ- ment as a ship's cook Warrant issued 11.— Cardiff ( City).— Tor stealing a shawl — KATE WILKIE, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in, stout build, complexion fair, large round face, long thin nose, hair light brown; dress, light three- quarter length coat, white bodice, black skirt, brown motor hat with large buckle in front. A prostitute; native of Barry. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff 12.— Neath ( Borouqh).- Yor embezzlement — E. A. ALLEN, age about 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very fair, clean shaved, peculiar gait; wearing knickers andi stockings. A wine and spirit merchant's traveller; native of Cardiff. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Neath. 13.— Swansea ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JOHN DAVIS, alias SUMMERS, HERSON, and DAVIES, Office No. 3502- 98, age 46, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light brown, eyes light blue, scar over right eye, 4th left finger con- tracted. A tailor; native of Dublin. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 19th October, 1903, to 5 years penal servitude for possessing counter- feit coin. Licensed 27th July, 1907. Q U d 26. For stealing a " King Edward" bicycle, 28 in. diamond frame, roller chain, Doughty process tyre front wheel, Welsh patent do. back wheel, green handle grips, mudguards, one Bowden brake left handle, Brooks' spring saddle, front spring broken, very old lamp, new yellow leather strap on tool bag— GRAN- VILLE HARRIS, alias GEORGE ATKINS and BROWN, age 23, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, long curl each side of fore- head, clean shaved, eyes grey, long face, Roman nose; dress, navy blue serge coat and trousers, grey vest, dark muffler ( blue spots), light cap, black cycling shoes, two buckles on each side. A boot- maker; native of Kingswood, Bristol He came to Cheltenham 25th ult. and stayed at a common lodging- house, next day he met a friend with whom he served in the 4th Battalion Gloucester Regiment, Absconded 28th ult. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 15.— Northleach ' • • ouMy).— For stealing. 17th ult., a safety bicycle, 26 in. frame, handle bars nearly straight, pneumatic front tyre, cushion back tyre, free wheel, rubber pedals, cellu- loid mudguards, fastened with straps, front rim brake, oil lamp attached— EDWARD BOOTH, age 23, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes dark brown, addicted to drink; dress dark coat and vest, cord trousers, dark cap. A native of Dowdeswell, near Cheltenham. Warrant issued. 16.— Northieach ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 21st ult, at Aldsworth, a lady's silver Geneva watch, No. 1018; and a hunter watch double case HOWARD ( supposed false), age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh hair and moustache light; dress, brown suit navy blue cap, heavy boots, carried a bag con- taining watch repairing tools and white apron He represented that he was employed by a jeweller; and that he resided at Cirencester. Hopkins, Northleaoh. 17 — Bristol [ City).— For sending an in- decent postcard— Expiree ALBERT JOHN CAROLAN, Office No. 812- 99, Case No. 103, 8th March, 1907, age 43 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, whiskers ( turning grey and pointed at end) aandy, moustache auburn, eyes hazel, wears spectacles; dress, long dark overcoat, dark trousers and cap, carries an umbrella. Was sentenced at Bristol Police Court, 18th October, 1905, to 6 months hard labour for wilful damage to shop blinds, and cushions at a railway station. Warrant issued'. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 18 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 1 \ 10th inst.— WILLIAM SEAGER, age 23, height 6 ft. in., high shoulders, powerful build, complexion fair, hair brown, small moustache, large hands and feet, one toe missing each foot, slouching gait, holds his head downwards; dress, dark coat and vest, trousers of rather darker material, brown worsted guernsey, red1 and blue flowered muffler, light grey cap, heavy nailed boots, wearing a brass albert ( snake pattern), and a lady's silver Geneva watch, No. 8470, had with him a blue serge cap and a light muffler. A labourer; native of Bath. He was in- valided from the Somersetshire Light Infantry at Devonport about two years ago. May be found at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 19.— Bristol ( City).— For larceny, lst inst. WILLIAM HENRY SARGENT, age 37, height ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes dark blue; dress, blue serge coat and vest, black and white plaid trousers, plaid muffler, grev mixture cap, lace boots. A shoemaker. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 20.— Bristol ( City).— For embezzling £ 22— WILLIAM HENRY FURZE, aged 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., good build, complexion florid, round features, hair ( bald on top) brown ( nearly grey), moustache light, eyes blue, of smart appearance; dress, blue serge suit, dark brown suit with large red' squares or fine black and white check suit, fawn colour rainproof overcoat, a tab with " Higgins and Sons, Ltd., 60, Park Street, Bristol," thereon, believed sewn on the inside breast pocket of each; also had in his possession a large brown Gladstone bag, some under- linen, black bowler hat and grey cap, was wearing a leather watch guard and oxidised watch. He was employed as a provision merchant's traveller. Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. 21 — Bristol ( City). — For stealing £ 22— HENRY CHARLES CLIFFORD, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair ( thin on top) dark brown, slight moustache dark; dress, blue serge suit, greenish cap, blue and white tie, lace boots. shaved, of smart appearance; dress, grey tweed suit and cap, brown boots. A tramping groom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Turner, County Police Office, St. Albans. 26.— St. ntbans City).- For stealing £ 5 17s., 9th inst.— FREDERICK FIELD, alias HART, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, scar inside left hand; dress, dark mixture jacket and1 vest, moleskin trousers, black neckerchief and cap; had with him a dark rainproof overcoat with stripes. A labourer; native of Tyttenhanger; Herts. He was formerly employed as a hay carter to and from London. Is a Reservist of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Bournemouth ( County)— For larceny 25th ult.— A MAN, age" 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache light; dress, pepper and salt colour tweed overcoat, Raglan pattern, cap to match, dark trousers, buckskin shoes, red soles. Supposed an Italian. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 23.— Lyndhurst ( County). — For stealing, between 5th and 7th inst., a quantity of wearing apparel from a barge— ALBERT JOSEPH MABEY, alias MAYBEY, Office No. 678- 05, age 36, height 5 ft. 3£ in., complexion fresh, hair ( partly bald) brown, eyes grey, scar on forehead and right side of neck, anchor and shield right forearm; wearing blue clothes and peak cap. A mariner; native of Hampshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wakeford, Lyndhurst. 24.— Woolston ( County\ — For stealing ( bailee), 25th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— THOMAS DODGHSON, age 21, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight mous- tache dark, eyes blue; dress, dark suit, light cap. A native of Ashfield, near Lancaster. Is a de- serter from the Royal Army Medical Corps. Warrant issued. Information to. Supt. Davis, Woolston. HERTFORDSHIRE. 25 — St. Albans ( County).— For stealing £ 3— JAMES SMITH, age about 26, height 5 ft. 1 § in., complexion fair, small features, clean KENT. 27,— Ashford ( County).— For stealing 12th inst., at Lydd Camp, a dark flannel suit; 2 razors, " Finnigan " on each ; 2 collars, " V. J. S." on each; 1 striped cotton shirt, " V. J. S." thereon; 1 pair brown boots; 3 studs with gold wire on heads; 70 penny stamps; and about £ 2 10s. — THOMAS ALLAN, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eves grey; dress, dark grey flannel suit. A native of Limerick. Is a private of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bailey, Ashford. 28 — Hartford (<" U/ tt. y . — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— EDWARD MORVIN, age about 43, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, moustache dark brown, very small feet; dress, short dark striped jacket, blue striped collar and front, green tie, light cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. 2 Dart ford ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings)— GEORGE AUSTIN, age 40 to 45, height about 6 ft., complexion florid, hair light brown, moustache ( slight) brown; wearing dark grey mixture trousers, sleeve vest, grey cap, some- times wears a grey jacket. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Kemp, Dartford. 30.— Margate ( Borough.).— For stealing, 26th August last, a dark tweed jacket suit, square cut jacket with thin red stripes — WILLIAM WADE, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( brushed up on forehead) very dark, eyes dark, addicted to drink; may be wearing the stolen suit. A comedian and dancer; native of Walworth. He is a member of the Royal Ante- deluvian Order of Buffaloes, Grand Surrey Banner and frequently calls at Lodges for assistance. May be found! with coon troupes at seaside towns. His letters are usually addressed " Till called for" at the G. P. O. in the town in which he is employed. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. 31. — Twnbritfge wells ( Borough).— For larceny— ERNEST MERCER, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, eyes rather weak, sword tattooed one forearm; dress, blue jacket, grey trousers, cap, boots. A porter; native of Langton, Kent. A Sussex Artillery Militiaman. Warrant issued. 32.— Tunbrldge Wells ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th ult., a hand cart, brown body, newly painted, low wheels, 2 handles, about 18 in. long, very high springs, iron band round tqp of body, oak frame, mahogany sides, " Hubble" shows faintly through the paint on sides— HARRY THOMAS SMITH, alias PALMER, age 42, height 5 ft. 2 in., oomplexion ruddy, moustache light, large eyes; dress, dark morning coat, dark mixture vest and trousers, dark brown soft felt hat. Hawks picture postcards, almanacs, & c. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Tunbridge Wells. LANARKSHIRE. 33.— Glasgow ( City).— Escaped from cus- tody, 10th inst.— JAMES WRIGHT, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue; well dressed. He travels the country with shows and boxing booths. Had been sentenced to 60 days' imprisonment for lar ceny, and escaped from the prison van. Pre- viously sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment for assault on a Constable.— DANIEL CALLIGAN, S. C. R. 380- 07, age 18, height 5 ft. 2£ in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar left side of mouth, 2 large scars centre of back, scar above left knee, below left ankle and above right. May seek employment as a labourer. Previously convicted of assault and robbery. He had been committed to prison pending further inquiry on a charge of assault with intent to rob, and escaped from the prison van. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. NORFOLK. 31.— Norwich ( Gity^.— For burglary, 13th inst.— Expiree ARTHUR YAXLEY, a lias JAMES WILSON, Office No. 2550- 99, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes ( sunken) grey, high cheek bones, scar back of head, mole back of neck, and hairy mole left cheek; dress, dark overcoat, dark jacket and vest, dirty drab trousers, mixed cloth cap, blue wrapper with white spots. Had about £ 10 in silver in his possession, part proceeds of the burglary. Has been previously convicted at Hull, King's Lynn, and Norwich. Information to the Chief Constable, Norwich. OXFORDSHIRE. 81. — Henley ( County). — 10th inst., in a Wood at Goring Heath, the body of A WOMAN, age 40 to 45, length about 5 ft. 3 in., hair light brown, 2 teeth left upper jaw filled with gold ; dress, blue serge costume ( coat lined plaid), black cloth cape with collar, about 40 in. long, blue and whitei striped blouse, black , felt hat, { trimmed feathers, woollen under- bodice, pearl buttons, corsets about 6 in. deep, appearance of figured leather, chemise, lace down front, cerise petti- coat, black stockings, patent leather shoes ( nearly new), blue silk waist- band, silver clasps, embossed woman and 2 children, one of which she is holding, attached to the band1 by a steel chain is a leather purse, about 4 in. long, containing a piece of gold, crescent shape, and a counterfoil of a postal order , for 10s., blank with " No. I 087376," number under I obliterated; 1 metal pencil case; 1 hypo- dermic syringe, in case; 1 handkerchief with flowers, laundry mark, " 45," in one corner; 1 crescent shaped white metal brooch, 8 stones; 3 hair combs ( 1 set with gold). A small screw stoppered bottle, a phial containing a fluid, and a glass medicine measure, were found near the body. Supposed dead about 12 months. Coroner's jury returned a verdict of " Found dead." ELGINSHIRE. 82. — Biffin { County).— On 25th ult., John Barclay Smith was murdered at Lhanbryde, sus- picion is attached to A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark or sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, thin face, eyes close set, sunken; dress, dark jacket suit and cap, dark muffler, light stripes, boots studded with pro- tectors. He was seen in company of the deceased, 21st ult., going in the direction of Lhanbryde, and lodged with him till 23rd ult., and worked together breaking road metal in the Mosstowie District, 23rd and 24th ult. The murdered man was last seen alive at 5 p. m., 25th ult., walking towards Lhanbryde. On the morning of 26th ult., the suspected murderer was seen on the main road leading from Lhanbryde to Fochabers, and asked a woman for a shirt. He is said to have a distinct South Country accent, and stated he had been a steward on a sailing ship, had been employed breaking bricks and slag, and was a native of Edinburgh, to which place he was returning. He rentedi a stable for a few weeks, and by representing that he was a large team owner and held an important cartage con- tract, obtained possession of the harness. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 102.— Nottingham I City).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 7th August last, a quantity of jewellery ( recovered)— MAX. HOFFMAN, a Jew, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, thin face, high cheek bones, hair ( slightly bald on top) and moustache light brown, eyes grey; dress, brown suit, light brown overcoat, black hard hat, sometimes wears a light cap. Believed a native of London. On 22nd July last he took a small office, represented himself as an insurance broker, obtained jewellery, & c., from various shopkeepers, stating he required the articles to present to his agents for competition in obtaining insurance business. He afterwards pledged the jewellery, Absconded! 5th ult. Prior ten 22nd July he was employed for a short time as night porter at a hotel. May be accompanied by a woman, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair inclined to ginger; dress, light costume, white hat trimmed black. A native of Ruddington, Notts.
