Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. t. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must b « clearly stated. 8. Portraits of persons whose apprehension ia sought lor serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of Bs.. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from to 10s. _ A remittance of 5*. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. S- Bvery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, at the case may be. LTXOHTS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an ojfle* « of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. I. Announcements ol all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear 4 number, and as far as practicable they they are alphabetically arranged by counties. I. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICI GAZBTTI, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to iht number of the announcement, for insertion in the next iuue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any annoue*. ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so ai to be receitti not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one tide of the papir only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering lettir. II. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Foil Office. II. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows : — ( à) All persons coming within Section 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( á) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's im- prisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, with out option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain good* and money by false pretences. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or con- victions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. SPECIAL NOTICE. £ 1,000 REWARD. WHEREAS about 5 p. m. on Friday, 7th June, 1907, a man named BERNARD BAUER was found lying on the floor of his office at the Modern Chambers, Collins Street, Melbourne, suffering from the effects of wounds caused by violent blows on the head which had been inflicted a few minutes previously, and from which the said Bernard Bauer died about three hours later. No doubt the motive for this crime was robbery, Bernard Bauer being a diamond merchant, and it is believed at the time of the offence he had in his possession a wallet containing:— 7 diamonds, each weighing 2 carats; 12 diamonds, each weigh- ing i carat; about 17 diamonds, each weighing § carat; 21 diamonds, each weighing J carat; a parcel of brilliants, weighing 1 carat; a parcel of rose diamonds, weighing 23i carats; a parcel of brilliants, 26^ carats; a parcel of brilliants, 11 carats; a parcel of small stuff, 18 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 46 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 14 carats; a parcel of brilliants, about 13 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 15 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 19 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 71 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 35J carats; a parcel of brilliants, 20 carats; a parcel of brilliants, 21 carats; and a parcel of brilliants, 15J carats, value £ 3,058; an emerald stone, 3J carats, old cut, 2 flaws on top, value about £ 50; also a gold open face Rotherham watch, monogram " B. B." in blue and gold enamel on back; and a very thin gold albert chain, which property is now missing. A MAN, giving the name of WILLIAM ANDERSON, strongly suspected. Description: — About 43 years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, medium build, fair moustache only, inclined to red; wore a brown to rusty coloured sac suit, and black boxer hat. He called on a Mr. Cutler, who carries on business as an importer of watchmaker's materials, and stated he was a jeweller, and obtained the murdered man's address prior to the murder, and he also made statements which, on investigation, proved untrue. Notice is hereby given that a reward of one thousand pounds will be paid by the Government for information which will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who caused the above- mentioned fatal injuries. No portion of the abovermentioned reward will be paid to any member of the Police Force of Victoria. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Travelling the Provinces with a company called tlie Bell and Bell Company, and living with Lilian Lewis, Case No. 3, 30th* ult., and passing as Mr. and Mrs. Watt, recently left Dublin for Wrexham. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division » — For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN RAY, age 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair turning grey, mous- tache ( clipped) dark grey, eyes brown, large- wart side of nose, of good address, plausible, right leg cork; dress, black morning coat suit, bowler hat. Supposed a Canadian. He advertises in London and Provincial newspapers for a farm bailiff re- quired in Canada, obtains large sums of money from applicants, and absconds. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. GITY OF LONDON. 7.— For stealing ( servant) a draft for £ 55 16s. 8d., and other sums— WILLIAM P. SAINS- BURY, late of Whippendell Road, Watford, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, rather large features, inclined to florid, hair and mous- tache light; dress, grey tweed suit, or frock coat suit, high silk hat, patent leather boots with fancy tops. A chauffeur; supposed a native of Willesden. Information to Supt. Holding, Clewer, or In- spector Jannaway, Ascot. 9. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 4 15s. by false pretences, 6th inst. — JOHN COLE, alias JACK TOVEY, age 26, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, thin face, hair brown, clean shaved, rather long nose, 2 front upper teeth miss- ing, Welsh aocent; dress, dark brown jacket suit, double- breasted vest, fancy mixture tie, Panama hat, brown lace boots, pointed toes. Fond of billiards; an inveterate smoker of cigarettes. Had with him a large brown tin box. He took lodg- ings 30th ult., and induced a licensed victualler to cash a cheque on the London and Provincial Bank, Ltd., Tredegar Branch, payable to J. Tovey, drawn by J. Cole, for the above amount, and was the last cheque in a book which he obtained from the bank, 29th April last, when he was in business at Blackwood as a refreshment house keeper. Stated he was a native of Pem- brokeshire, and his name was John Tovey, but sometimes used the name of Cole. Advertised racing tips in sporting papers in name of Jack Tovey. Absconded 6th inst. CHESHIRE. 10.— Birkenhead ( County).— For house- breaking at Whitby, 28th ult., and stealing £ 4 18s. 6d.— HENRY RUFFER, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, small moustache dark, of German parentage; dress, dark brown mixture suit, coloured muffler, cap. A barber; native of Liverpool. May seek employ- ment as a labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Birkenhead. 11 — Crewe ( County).— For la^ o^ ny ( lodging*) — EDWARD JAMES LOFTS, alias' WILSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. Appearance of a groom. A native of Cambridge. ( See Cases No 19, 2nd ult., and No. 10, 12th July last.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Chasierfield { Borough).— For steal- ing from his lodginigs, 18th ult., a lady's gold dress ring, set pale blue stone, 3 pearls each side ( some missing) ; and) 10s.— JOHN JOSEPH HEM- MINGS, gave name of JOSEPH BLOWER, age 23, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, small scar corner left eiye, 3 blue dots left forearm, cut scar left wrist, 1 front upper tooth missing. A moulder; native of Coventry. Has served in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Warrant issued. 13. — Chesterfield ( Borough). — For ob- taining food and lodgings by false pretences, lst inst. — ARTHUR BRADLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stiff build, square shoulders, complexion sallow, full face, hair, moustache, and eyes dark; dress, dark brown jacket suit and cap, greenish tie, dark grey motor mackintosh, red lining. He represented himself as a chauffeur to a nobleman, and engaged a carriage and pair of horses to meet his master at the railway station. Several trains were met, and he made excuses for his master's non- arrival. He obtained food and lodgings for himself and the coachman, from whom he borrowed money, which he promised to return. He left to meet a train on 2nd inst. and did not return. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chester- field. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Exeter ( City).— For stealing ( bailee), £ 8 8s., 12th inst.— JOHN HENRY SPICER, age 19 to 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, clasped hands, " true love" right forearm, indistinct marks back left forearm; dress, dark coat, vest, trousers and cap. A labourer; native of Exeter. He was employed at a public house, and was entrusted with the money to pay bills. Discharged from the Navy with ignominy after a conviction for felony. May be found at common lodging houses, in company of Italian organ- grinders, or selling ice- cream in the streets. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Exeter. ESSEX. 15.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 31st ult., a " Premier" bicycle, Clipper tyres, free wheel, plated rims, upturned handle bars, rim brakes— G. D. ALLEN ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in., long face, hair dark, moustache light brown, long nose, tat- tooed both arms, several front upper teeth missing, of military appearance; dress, dark grey striped suit, grey cap, bow tie, brown canvas shoes. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 16.— Colchester ( County).— For stealing a copper copper ( recovered), at Great Bromley, 14th inst.— DUKE FAIRWEATHER, alias SMITH, age 24, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., knock knees, com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, impediment in speech; dress, brownish suit, breast pockets in coat, lace boots, wears silver ring 3rd left finger. A low class dealer and rag and bone gatherer; native of London. Supposed well known at Hackney, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Woodford, and' Stamford Rivers.— GEORGE —, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, light moustache, and eyes dark; dress, dark suit and cap, brown shoes, dark neckerchief. Sup- posed a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester. 17.— Grays ( County).— HARRY OSBORNE, Cases No. 15 and 14, 15th and 22nd March, 1907, respectively, not now - wanted. Warrant cancelled. 18.— Romford ( County).— For burglary at Upminster, 13th inst.— CHARLES ROSS,' age 45, height 6 ft., complexion dark, hair, moustache and eyes dark brown, sometimes wears glasses; dress, pepper and salt mixture jacket, black serge vest, dark plaid trousers, black and white plaid cap. A carpenter. He is stated to be an Army pensioner. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. 19.— Wit ham ( County). — For obtaining monev by false pretences ( photograph frauds)— G. CARTER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair and moustache dark brown; dress, black coat, light fancy vest, light trousers, straw hat, old brown boots, wearing massive gold chain and a ring.— A MAN ( supposed son of above), age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., full face, hair light brown, clean shaved, nimples on face; dress, blue suit, large cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lennon, Witham. GLA MORS3A NSHIRE . 20. — Swansea ( Borough) — For obtaining fish to the value of £ 13 14s., by false pretences — C. POWELL, age 32 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes ( small) dark, small nose, of good address; dress, blue serge suit, brown soft felt hat, brown boots, wearing a heavy gold albert. He attends fish sales, displays elaborate bill- heads with a fictitious office address thereon, obtains fish on a few days' credit, and dispatches same to another market to be sold on commission. The amount realised is forwarded by wire to the post office. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOISGES YERSHIRE. 21.— Bristol ( City).— For embezzling 19s., 15th inst.— GIOVANNI COCOZZA, an Italian, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, long features, hair ( curly) dark brown, clean shaved, abscess scar left side of jaw, speaks English well, but often professes to be unable to do so when spoken to by Police; dress, light jacket and trousers, dark vest, red muffler, large dark cap. Mav be found hawking bananas or ice cream. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 22.— Bristol ( CAtvY— For stealing. 31st ult., £ 2 12s.— BERT CODGEBROOK, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache ( slight) dark, cut scar across, throat, which is very noticeable; dress, black jacket, blue serge trousers, greenish cap, red muffler, lace boots. He came to Bristol about 5 weeks ago, and prior to that is believed to have been employed, on the Salvation Army Farm Colony, Hadley, Essex, and frequently" visited Southend, where he is believed to be well known. Also stated he had been employed with Sangers' Circus. A good pianist, and may be found play- ing the piano at public houses. In Bristol he was employed at a nursery and market garden. Usually stays at Salvation Army and Church Army Homes. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. © 23.— Bristol (, City\— For stealing, 14th ult., 4 gold rings, and a purse containing 3s.— LOUISA THOMAS, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes ( full) blue, 2 front upper teeth project; dress, black blouse, dark blue skirt, white stripes, dark grey threequarter- length coat, large black hat, old lace boots. A native of Bristol. She has been convicted of obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. May be found in company of prostitutes, and staying at low re- freshment houses. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Fareham ( County).— For stealing £ 50 LOUISA BLOW, age 62 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( oart false) brown, upper teeth artificial, some of which are missing; dress, grey mixture skirt, dark blouse, forget- me nots thereon, green motor cap or hat, may be wearing a long brownish over- coat with green stripes. A cook or housekeeper; native of Southampton. Usually employed at hotels or public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. 25.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to his recognizances at the Quarter Sessions, 5th ult., charged with unlawful wounding — RICHARD GREEN", age 59, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. A hawker; has been convicted at Chichester and Havant under the Vagrancy Act. Warrant issued. 26.— Portsmouth ( For- ouoh).— For steal- ing £ 14, lst inst.— JOHN FRANCIS HAMIL- TON, age 25, height 5 ft. 9f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A clerk; native of Dundee. An Acting Bombardier of the Royal Garrison Artillery, wearing uniform. He was entrusted with the above amount to obtain postal orders and absconded. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 29 — Doncaster ( County).— For obtaining £ 4 10s., by false pretences at Hickleton, 21st ult.— WILLIAM HARRIS, alias WILLIAM SCOTT, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slightly hunch- back, complexion fair, hair brown, slight mous- tache light; dress, blue jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, cap, brown lace boots, blue and white muffler. Supposed! a native of Worksop. He answers advertisements in local papers for mar- ried farm hands, usually gets engaged, furnishes a cottage oil hire purchase svstem, borrows money, and decamps. Was accompanicd by a woman who passes as his wife, age 18; dressed in black. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hickes, Doucaster. SURREY. 30. — Reigate ( Borough). — For absconding from the Philanthropic Society's Farm School, Redhill, 28th ult.— GEORGE RERRY, age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair ( curly) dark brown, eyes blue grey, rather small nose, one and a half upper front teeth and tip of one middle finger missing, 4 dots left arm. He calls on doctors and dentists, and states he wishes to make an appointment for a friend, and when left in the waiting or consulting room commits the theft and decamps, telling the servant he will call again.
