Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted to » ne issue of the POLICI GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to b( taken upon them by another force. Particulars aa to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. A In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person risponsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must bi clearly stated. H. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and tnfravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait and of 6s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is larga or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from Si. to 10a. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an oJfl « « r of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear m number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 8. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to tkt iumber of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be receivti not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later tha% Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the papet only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, S'ew Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Pott Office. 13. A tramp. Had in his posses- sion a new pigskin purse, and a bundle tied in a red handkerchief. He disposed of some of the pouches and purses at Llanfyndd. Runcorn ( County).— For obtaining 2s. by false pretences, 5th inst.— MARGARET ROBINSON, alias MARGARET ELLIOTT and CHADWICK, age 31, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes grey, London accent; dress, long dark grey loose fitting jacket, vertical pockets, black dress, 3 frills at bottom, dark brown feather boa, large round black hat trimmed black frill and feather left side, lace boots with patent leather toecaps, carried an umbrella. A waitress; native of Wavertree, Liverpool. She falsely represented herself to be housekeeper to a gentleman about to remove to a local residence, engaged persons to clean the house, and borrowed Is. each from two of them under the pretence of having forgotten her purse, and being unable to pay her return fare to Liverpool. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9 — Wrexham ( County\- For stealing a quantity of old iron, about 7th inst.— SIDNEY LEWIS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, large features, hair light brown, slight mous- tache light, takes short quick strides, speaks with Birmingham accent; dress, old dark suit and cap. A rag and bone gatherer, formerly employed with travelling roundabouts, iSrc. Is believed to have served in the Monmouth Artillery. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. 10. - Wrexham { Connty\—¥ oT aiding and abetting Richard Henry Leah ( in custody) to steal a razor, black handle, cross keys on blade; 2 wooden pipes, new; and tobacco— WILLIAM WEAVER, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. IN certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient for the purpose; but if a photograph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be re- quired to complete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. 5 — X Division.— For stealing, 15th inst., a gold brooch, true lover's knot, set diamonds and sapphires; 2 half- hoop diamond rings ( 1 set 5 stones); 1 gold ring, set lapis lazuli; 1 plain gold do., " John Taylor" and inscription thereon; 1 gold English lever hunter stop watch ; 1 lady's gold Geneva keyless watch, gold dial; 1 gold curb pat- tern Albert, spade guinea attached ; 1 lady's do., half guinea and gold coin attached; 1 long gold neck chain, trace pattern, amethyst heart at tached; 1 silver Albert, curb pattern, 2 silver coins attached; 1 silver hunter watch; 1 gold band bracelet, horse shoe thereon — WALTER THOMAS UNDERWOOD, age 18, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, left ear very prominent; dress, dark jacket suit, black overcoat, blue and yellow muffler, bowler hat, brown lace boots. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Chester Haiti ( B'"- nygh) — For steal- ing, between 1st November, 1906, and 5th inst., 6 gold rings ( 5 recovered, other a lady's 18 ct. gold half- hoop diamond and opal, claw setting, 3 large opals and 4 diamonds), see Case No. 41, 4th inst.— HERBERT JOHNSON, alias JACKSON, age 21, height 5 ft. 5\ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, " H " tattooed left forearm. A plumber; native of Burnley. He calls at jewellers' shops, asks to be shown valuable rings, leaves without making a purchase, but takes one or more rings with him. Warrant issued. DEVONSHIRE. 12. — Exeter ( City).— On commitment warrant, for non- payment of £ 32 16s., fines im- posed for selling margarine as butter— RICHARD HENRY ROGERS, age about 50, height 6 ft., stoops slightly, strong build, complexion fresh, long features, prominent nose, hair dark, whiskers and moustache tinged with grey, may be clean shaved, slovenly gait; dress, dark clothes, " bowler hat, lace boots, usually wears leggings. A native of North Devon. May be found at markets selling butter and eggs, or hawking same. Absconded November last. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. ESSEX. y^— Ch films fori/ [ County).— For stealing from a jeweller's shop, 11th inst., a silver English lever keyless watch, No. 559857, 2 jewels, plain case, " 467 " scratched inside; 1 do., No. 49194, 11 jewels, plain case, " 494" scratched inside— — SYPHON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, long thin face, beard brown ( clipped close to a point), apoears to breathe heavily through nose; dress, black or dark blue overcoat, black hard felt hat. Carried an old brown bag. Appearance of a farmer; he represented himself to be a steward, asked to be shown some watches and a chain, selected the latter, in which he desired some alter- ation made, and stated he would call for same the next day. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. — Thorae ( County}. — For obtaining underclothing by false pretences at Clacton- on- Sea, 4th inst.— TOT SADLER ( supposed false), age about 22, height 5 ft, 4 in., complexion fair, sharp features, hair brown ; dress, grey tweed suit, black hard felt hat. He called at a clothiers, stated he was employed by a local baker, who wished to see the underclothing before purchasing same. Warrant issued. Information to Suptl Cowell, Thorpe- le- Soken. FORFARSHIRE. 15. — Dundee ( Citu). — THOMAS RICE REID. Case No. 40. 27th July, 1906. Warrant withdrawn. rather slight build, complexion pale, hair light, moustache sandy, ring tattooed one finger, sup- posed left hand, extensive tattooing both arms; wearing dark or blue suit, black bowler hat. Pro- fesses to be religious, and endeavours to become a member of church choirs. A cycle fitter. Has been convicted at Tenbury, Birmingham Sessions, Worcester Assizes and Quarter Sessions, of larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 18. staple HW ( Countv\— For stealing from his lodgings at Mangotsfield, 29th ult., an aluminium gold centre second stop watch; 1 chain; 1 grey flannelette striped shirt— FREDERICK PAYNE, alias DAVID JAMES, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair fair, very full eyes; dress, dark coat and vest, blue tight fitting trousers, mixed colour cap. A native of Winch- combe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 19.- Aldershot ( County^.— For stealing, 24th ult., an " Ariel " bicycle, No. 3 pattern, 26 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, 104 gear, free wheel, dropped handle bars, rat trap pedals, twin roller chain, Brooks's saddle, front forks slightly bent, " Ariel" back brake— PETER POTTER, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar left buttock, tattooed right forearm; wearing khaki uniform. Is a deserter from the 105th Battery Royal Field Artillery. A shoeing smith. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 20 — Portsmouth ( Borouo \— For oh- taining clothing by false pretences— REGINALD CYRIL KENNETH GATHORNE HARDY, age 18, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, well educated; dress, seaman's uniform, " H. M. S. Cressy " on cap ribbon, may now be wearing a blue serge suit, white muffler, cap. A native of Northampton. He boasts of having an income of £ 600 a year. Escaped from custody 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE, 21.— Bromyard ( CouvU).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Bromyard Union— FREDERICK JENKINS, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair, whiskers, and moustache black; dress, old black jacket and vest, cord trousers, dark cap. A labourer, generally employed with threshing machines. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. ISLE OF WIGHT. 22.—< Vownort ( County).— For stealing 17th inst., a bicycle tyre ( recovered)— W7ILLIAM BLACKMAN, age 54, height about 5 ft. 4 in., hair and moustache light brown, left little finger missing. Supposed a native of Eastmeon, Hants. Absconded 8th inst. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Newport. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 10. - Cheltenham ( County).— For stealing at Winchcombe, a " Premier " bicycle, " A " grade, 26 in. frame, enamelled black, red lines, plated spokes, inverted lever brakes, flat mudguards, rat trap pedals, plated lamp, " Lewis, Birimingham " thereon, celluloid pump, carrier on back, mackin- tosh suit and leggings thereon— DAVID JAMES, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, clean shaved; dress, dark grey overcoat ( chocolate and green stripe), pockets stitched round, imita- tion leather buttons, smooth blue suit, light cap, light boots, size 6i, ornamental holes on toe caps and seams round sides. A groom or labourer ; has served in Royal Field Artillery, from which he was discharged, supposed after serving a term of imprisonment. Warrant issued. ' 7. — Gheltenham~( County). — For scal- ing money from gas meters— GEORGE MAT- THEWS, age about 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., KENT. 23.— Ramst » ate ( Borough). - For stealing £ 2 from his lodgings, 27th ult.— REGINALD THORPE, age 15 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, blinks, horse shoe and ship tattooed back of left hand; wearing old clothing and brown shoes. About a month ago he was charged at Canterbury with stealing a pair of opera glasses, when he was handed over to the Police Court Missionary, and sent to Ramsgate for the purpose of going to sea. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. KIRKCUDBRIGHTSHIRE. 24 — Kirkcudbright ( County^.— For ob- taining £ 10 10s. by fraud, 28th ult.— WILLIAM MURRAY, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, pock marked, hair and moustache light; dress, dark overcoat, blue serge suit, hard black hat, dark tan colour boots. He represented himself to be a canvasser for a directory, and obtained the money for the insertion of an adver- tisement therein. Warrant issued. 25. — Kirkcudbright < Count. u\ — For stealing, between 3rd and 5th inst., 5 overcoats ( recovered)— JOHN DEVINE or CARROLL, may assume the names of THOMSON and SCOTT, age 43, height 5 ft. 7f in., blotches on face, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache light or reddish, eyes blue, large fawn colour spot tipper part of left leg, small scar below left eye, small hairy mole over right cheek bone, several pock marks on nose, varicose veins left leg; dress, blue Melton overcoat with velvet collar, dark trousers, white muffler, peak cap. A native of Galashiels. ( Register, photograph and description, No. 138- 94.) He was accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, cut on upper lip; dress, light jacket, grey skirt, black apron. Warrant issued. LANARKSHIRE. 2G. — Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 254, between 1st March and 25th December, 1906— WILLIAM CAMPBELL HUMPHREYS, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., broad shoulders, com- plexion fair, hair ( curly) light brown, eyes blue, clean shaved, right foot deformed and wears special boot, limps slightly; usually wears heavy grey overcoat, tweed jacket suit, soft white hat. A commission agent and debt collector; native of Irvine, Ayrshire. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. i7.— Bury ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— J. HUGHES, alias SAMUEL CAMPBELL, age 36, height 5 ft. 7| in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, abscess mark left cheek, scar left side of head and left forearm, of good address and smart appearance. A native of Banbridge. Sentenced, 3rd January, 1906, at Wigan, to 3 months imprisonment for a similar offence. He represented that he was agent for a Directory. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 28.— Liverpool ( CMiA— For burglary. 19th ult., and stealing £ 30— WILLIAM HOWARTH, alias PATTINSON, age 25, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, thin face, hair brown, slight moustache. A bookmaker; native of Northumberland. May endeavour to leave the country. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing a quantity of clothing from lodgings, 27th ult.— — CARTER, age about 53, height 5 ft. 4 in., thin features, high forehead, pock- marked, hair ( bald on top) light, moustache sandy; wearing dark grey overcoat and suit, ' hard hat. He took lodgings, 24th ult., stating he came from Macclesfield, and that his luggage would arrive later. Absconded 27th ult. with clothing, which he pledged. 30.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 27th ult.— LOUIS BERKOWITZ, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, speaks several languages; dress, light tweed check suit, dark blue overcoat, veivet collar, felt hat. He obtained the money from a man under the pretence of obtaining him employment on a ship. May seek employment as upholsterer, a runner at boarding houses for foreign emigrants, or as Jewish cook on emigrant ships. Warrant issued. 31 . — Livernon! :< Utv\ — For stealing jewellery, 10th inst.— HENRY THOMPSON, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair ( bald on top) and moustache brown. He engages advertised apartments and steals jewellery therefrom. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. yi— Manohpste" ( Cht— For failing to report— Licence- holder WILLIAM WILKINSON, alias STANLEY and TAYLOR, Office No. 3235- 02, age 47, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar right eyebrow, lost part of 4th right finger, bracelet back each wrist, half ring back 3rd left finger; dress, dark suit, pot hat. A labourer; native of Manchester. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 9th February, 1903, to 5 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 14th November, 1906. H M S d 610. Warrant issued. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 33.— Risna ( County).— For obtaining 15s. and grocery by false pretences, at Newbridge, 3rd inst.— JAMES BOSHELL, alias JOHN COX, an Irishman, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion, hair, and moustache dark; dress, black jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, dark cap, light lace boots. A tramping labourer. Has been convicted at Neath, Bridgend, and Swansea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Porter, Risca. FRIDAY, JANUARY - JO, 1907. They advertised and answered advertisements in country newspapers, visited agricultural shows, and obtained goods by misrepresentations. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. OXFORDSHIRE. 35. — Oxford ( City\ — For faVification of accounts, between 30th June and 15th October, 1906— PERCY CLAPHAM, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, straight nose, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue; dress, dark grey Chesterfield overcoat, dark grey suit, dark tie, black bowler hat, wearing gold colour chain and a lady's silver watch. A cashier. Ab- sconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oxford. 8 in., hair, beard, and moustache light. A clerk. May endeavour to leave the country. A barman; LANCASHIRE. AS.— Liverpool ( Citv^.— For stealing about £ 20, 4th inst.— CHRISTOPHER CHRISTIAN ERNFRED GOTTSCHALK, age 40, height 5 ft.
