All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDII OUL and all communi- 5DITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of Is. per portrait and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 4. T 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by couniies. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all eases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturduy morning. They must be clearly written on one'side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. .4(( payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. SPECIAL NOTICE. COMPLAINTS are daily received by the Hert- fordshire Constabulary, from all parts of the country, respecting Mrs. M. Henville, of Braugh- ing, Ware, Herts, a begging letter impostor, well known to the Charity Organisation Society; writes to charitably disposed persons stating that she and her family are starving. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT 1 — Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For stealing at V'ictorii Australia, £ 200, monies of the Council of Trinity College, Melbourne — ALEXANDER HOLT- ZENDOROFF PERCIVAL, age about 40, height 6 ft., complexion ruddy ( bald in front), moustache light, may be clean shaved, high fore- head, wears glasses with gold rims. Is said to be now in England and engaged in Fire, Marine and possibly Life Insurance work, supposed in name of H. A. Percival. Provisional warrant issued. 2.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— On provisional warrant for theft by conversion at Johannesburg — ALBERT JAMES STUDD BROWN, age 38, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, sunburnt, hair dark brown, 2 or 3 white patches back of head, eyes large and shifty. He is a member of the Trans- vaal Society of Accountants. Left Johannesburg, 8th December last, and was last seen at New- market Races in May. 3.— A Division.— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, about 12th April last— HENRY WATSON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion rather pale, hair light, moustache sandy. Warrant issued. 4— B Division.— For stealing a quant'ty of linen, knives, & c. ( recovered) — JAMES ARKELL, alias LEWIS, MITCHELL and STEVENS, age 62, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard and moustache brown ( turning grey), eyes weak, sometimes wears a shade; dress, black overcoat, 2 medal ribbons thereon, dark trousers, brown cap, lace boots. May be found selling matches in the street. — HARRIET LEWIS, age 58, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and eyes dark; dress, black coat, skirt and toque, lace boots. Natives of London. 5. — C Division. — For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 23rd ult., a motor car, described in Case No. 2, 8th inst. ( recovered) — R ASHWORTH, alias WILLIAM KEEN, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache reddish brown ( turning grey), eyes grey; dress, grey jacket suit, grey cap. C.," on front, " 466 " stamped on box between shafts, painted blue, left shaft has been repaired WILLIS, age 35, height 4 ft. 11 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, black jacket, cord trousers, dark cap. A native of London. Supposed travelling the country accompanied by his Wife, age 36; and 2 Children, age years and 18 months respectively. Warrant issued. 9.— P Division.— For stealing from his lodgings, 4th inst., a plain gold ring, set large pearl, claw setting; 1 gold signet ring, set green stones ; 4 £ 5 Bank of England notes, of Nos. " 37673 to 7, inclusive; and £ 40— ARTHUR SHAWELL, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, speaks with North Country accent; dress, blue serge jacket suit, bow tie, black beaver hat, lace boots. 10.— X Division.— For stealing. 7th inPt., £ 7 7s.; and 2 postal orders — MALCOLM McMILLAN, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion dark, speckles on face, hair dark brown, eyes brown; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, dark trousers, tweed cap, lace boots. Supposed a native of Glasgow or John- o'- Groats. 11.— Y Division.— For embezz'ement — WILLIAM YATES, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, brown cord suit and cap, brown leather leggings. BUCKINGHA MS HIRE. 12.— High Wycombe ( Borough).— For being concerned with George Wilson, in custody, charged with counting- housebreaking, 4th inst.— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes dark blue, 1 front upper tooth deficient, red scar about in. long, J in. wide, over right eye, snake with ivy leaf each side of head, and " B. L. M." under- neath, on right forearm, screws his eyes when talking, appearance of having served in the cavalry; dress, blue jacket and double- breasted vest, brown moleskin trousers, wide bottoms, black silk neckerchief, brown mixture cap, turns up with button at top, nearly new, lace boots, 2 cuts on outside of right boot. CA RNARVONSHIRE. 13. — Conway ( County). — For embezzling £ 6 lis., 11th inst.— ROBERT THOMAS JONES, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, short moustache dark, eyes brown, scar on left calf; dress, slate colour jacket and vest, navy blue trousers, light grey cap, new boots. A native of Talybont. He was invalided from the 21st Lancers about 4 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rees, Conway. CHESHIRE. 14.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing £ 12 from his lodgings, between 30th and 31st ult.— ALBERT EDWARD FISHER, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., rather stiff build, complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache light brown, dots tattooed left forearm; dress, dark grey mixture suit, grey ( Army) socks, dark grey striped cap, lace boots with square toes. He was trans- ferred from the Dorsetshire Regiment to the Army Reserve in March last. Wan- ant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 15.— Hyde ( Borough).— For housebreaking and stealing a silver watch ( recovered); 1 lady's silver Waltham lever watch, small gold cased guard attached; 1 gun metal watch, out of repair; 1 striped woollen shirt, turned down collar; 1 pair grey trousers; 1 light grey jacket with narrow red and green stripes—• RICHARD SMITH, alias HOWARTH ( who pledged the watch, recovered, lst inst., at Ashton- under- Lyne), age about 60, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( closely trimmed) and bushy eyebrows white; wearing dark clothing and hard felt hat.— A MAN, age about 46, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair dark; wearing black jacket and vest, grey and black mixture cap, blue sateen shirt with white stripes. DURHAM. 16.— Stockton - on - Tees ( County).— For obtaining £ 21 10s. by a worthless cheque, 14th ult.— JOSEPH HARWOOD, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, of good address; wearing black frock coat, silk hat, carried an umbrella. Stated he was travelling for an Electrical Accessory Company. Stays at hotels. May have in his possession a cheque book on the National Provincial Bank of England, York. Warrant issued. Hildreth, Stockton- on- Tees. 11 — Sunderland ( Borough).— For appro- priating £ 411 to his own use, lst October, 1905— JOHN APTHORPE BENTHAM, age about 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., square build, complexion fresh, round face, hair brown, clean shaved, good teeth, close set, wears pince- nez and occasionally glasses with curved shanks, of good address; dress, dark jacket suit, black felt hat. A solicitor; native of Sunderland. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Sunderland. ESSEX. 18.— Colchester ( County).— For stealing from lodgings, at Marks Tey, between 24th ult. and 6 th inst., jewellery ( recovered)— FRANK LESLIE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair ( inclined to curly) light brown; dress, dark grey plaid suit, red tie. Supposed a native of Putney, London. Describes himself as an actor and journalist, writes under the non- de- plume of " Kit Carson " and " Frank Frank."— MAUD LESLIE ( supposed wife of above), age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion dark, hair black, eyes dark, of Jewish appearance; dress, black and white striped blouse, grey skirt, blue felt hat, trimmed white roses both sides. Supposed a native of Bayswater, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester. FIFESHIRE. 19— Cupar ( County).— For embezzling £ 34 16s. 6d., between November, 1905, and April, 1906— THOMAS DUNCAN SPENCE, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair, slight moustache, and eyes ( piercing) dark, carries his head forward, slouching gait, of reserved disposition; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, tweed peak cap, sometimes wears a light grey overcoat. An earthenware manufacturer's traveller, also held agencies for a pottery firm at Newcastle- on- Tyne, and china dealers in London. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cupar. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Alton ( County). — For assault— CHARLES GREEN, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache and eyes brown. A gipsy; native of Farnham. Accompanied by his Wife; 2 Boys; and a Baby. Travels the country with a slate colour cart and a brown pony, collecting old iron, & c. Absconded lst inst. Warrant issued. James, Alton. 21.— B ournemouth ( County).— F or forging and uttering 2 cheques ( 1 for £ 12; 1 for £ 5), 8th inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, rather sunburnt, hair ( slightly bald on top) light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, cheeks sunken, top of right forefinger slightly deformed; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, light grey soft felt hat, rather broad brim, lace boots. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 22.— Gosport ( County).— For embezzling 14s. 4£ d., 5th inst.— ALBERT SMITH, age 19, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes ( sunken) brown, Scotch accent; dress, dark grey lounge jacket and vest, dark trousers, blue cap, lace boots. A grocer's assistant. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— For car- nally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years— TOM SMITH, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair and moustache dark; dress, blue serge suit and cap. HEREFORDSHIRE. 24.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing at Much Marcle, 7th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— ALBERT EDWARD EVANS, age 21, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) dark brown, eyes hazel, cut scar on nose; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, brown trousers^ black hard hat, brown boots, carried an ash stick. A labourer ; native of Little Hill, Woolhope. He left for South Wales, 12th inst. May endeavour to proceed to Canada. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HER TFORDSHIRE. 25.— Hertford ( County).— For rape, 11th inst.— CHARLES CHALKLEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair; dress, dark grey suit, dark cap. A native of Tewin, Welwyn. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford. KENT. 26.— Tonbridge ( County).— For obtaining, 7th inst., by false pretences, a brown tweed double- breasted reefer suit, size 4; 1 blue serge single- breasted suit, size 4, " Achilles" on white label sewn inside breast pocket; 1 grey Irish tweed suit, single- breasted, size 3; 1 blue serge single- breasted suit, size 3— LOUISA RIDGEWELL, alias RIDGWELL and ALICE CLARK, Office No. S 3370 ( Case No. 45, 6th April last), age 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar on first right finger; dress, dark jacket and skirt, black hat. Appearance of a servant. She represented that she was in service at a hotel, and that her master had sent her for the clothes on approval. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Styles, Tonbridge. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Bury ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 4th inst., a Leco" bicycle, 27 in. frame, £ in. chain, rat trap pedals, " Radax " front tyre, front rim ' brake, " Canfield" Coaster back brake, straight handle bars, black enamelled— JOHN ASHWORTH, age 22 to 25, height 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown; dress, dark reefer jacket, cord trousers, cap, scarf, blucher boots. A piecer in cotton factory; native of Bury. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 28.— Liverpool ( City).— For neglecting to notify their change of residence— Licence- holder STEPHEN SMITH, Office No. 956- 06, age 37, height 5 ft. 9f in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes grey, Union Jack, Stars and Stripes, clasped hands, star, and broad arrow left forearm, scar on left eyebrow, back of left thumb and back of left hand, hairy chest. A clerk; native of Dartmouth, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sentenced at Chester Assizes, 7th March, 1904, to 3 and 3 years penal servitude ( concurrent), for burglary. Licenced 7th June last. e 73.— Supervisee WILLIAM HAMILTON, Office No. 841- 06, age 21, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, " Albert Burrows" and scar back of right hand, several figures under right arm, clasped hands, " Haynes V. R." right forearm, and right and left forearm tattooed all over, " W. C. Caw- lett" front of left wrist, " C. . Bella," pierced heart, " J. Raven," back of left hand, bust of a man and woman and ballet girl tattooed on chest. A labourer; native of St. Albans. Sentenced at Nottingham Sessions, 29th September, 1905, to 8 months imprisonment, and 1 year supervision, for warehousebreaking and receiving. Discharged from prison, 16th May last, on remission. 1507. Both to be dealt with where found. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1906. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRIC7 30.— G Division.— For oMaininsr by falee pretences, 7th ult., a motor car— FREDERICK WATSON, alias WILLIAM KEEN, Office No. 1457- 05, age 28, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexior fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, 2n< right finger nail deformed; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A chauffeur and cabman; native of Southport. Had in his possession 6 £ 5 no'es 3 Nos. » ^ l68i0 and 16821 an I ^ 40744 ; 5 £ 10 notes. Nos. ^> 4451, " K' 7 013 " v 12514. 4 515 and 42516 ; 2 £ 20 notes. Sos IWn * ani 112- 7. all stamped " Manchester and Salford Savings Bank." He was at Gravesend, 22nd ult., where he presented a cheque at a bank. Sentenced at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 18th October, 1904, to 12 months hard labour for larceny ( servant), and stealing £ 120; has also been convicted at South- port, Liverpool, and Bedford. He ascertains the addresses of persons having relatives abroad, calls on such persons, states he has just arrived in this country, claims to have known their relatives abroad, who requested him to call, upon the plea that he has lost his money whilst on the boat, and that his boxes, containing a large sum of money and presents from the relatives, which Tiave been entrusted to him to hand over, are in the hands of the Customs' Authorities, he obtains a tem- porary loan of money for the purpose of redeem- ing his boxes.
