POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1906. VOL. XXIII., No. 2316. RBOUL 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehensiin is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Z. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZBTTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual / orm? and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Pott Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are onhf accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue carmot be guaranteed. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A hairdresser; native of Crayford. Sen- tenced at Suffolk Assizes, 4th November, 1903, to 3 years penal servitude for arson. Licenced 3rd ult. d 497. To be dealt with where found. 2 —£ Division.— For larceny ( servant) — RONALD BAKER, age 17, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, grey worsted jacket, light striped flannel trousers, grey cap, lace boots. ' 6.— E Uivision.— For stealing, 14th nit., a diamond ring ( found pledged)—- ISAAC PRU- DINSKI, a Russian Jew, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache and eyes dark, stoops; dress, dark jacket suit, bowler hat. A working jeweller. Warrant issued. • 4.— F Division.— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences— HENRY CHARLES JAMES, alias CHARLES HOSKEN, age about 38, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( long, curly, and slightly bald on top) dark brown, eyes ( prominent) brown, erect bearing, soft voice, can use foreign accent when necessary; dress, blue jacket suit or dark grey frock coat and vest, dark grey trousers, grey herring bone Chesterfield Raglan overcoat, black hard felt or silk hat. A native of Helston, Cornwall. ( See Case No. 94, 12th January last.) Warrant issued. 5.— H Division.- F> r abdncting, 28th December last ( Paula Laventhal, age 16 years 4 months, height 5 ft. 5 in., som- plexion fair, freckled face, hair ginger, tip of nose inclined to be red, scar over left eye)— ISAAC MINTZ, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair ( short and curly) black, eyes ( weak) dark brown, speaks English well and French slightly; dress, grey jacket and vest, striped trousers, brown hard felt hat, A waiter; native of Poland. Warrant issued. 6.— J Division.— For stealing ( by trick) 7th ult., 2 black geldings ( 1st, 6 years, 17 hands, narrow breast, near hind fetlock white, short mane, long tail. 2nd, 6 years, 16 hands', thick set, sear inside both forelegs). Both in good con- dition— TWO MEN ( 1st, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache light; dress, brown jacket, cord trousers, blue neckerchief, light plaid cap, lace boots. 2nd, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, dark jacket and cap, brown trousers, lace boots. Appearance of labourers. 7.— K Division.— For forging and utter- ing a cheque for £ 33— WILLIAM EDWIN DA VIES, age 42, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light browa, eyes blue, nose slightly pock- marked, left eye tooth missing, walks quickly; dress, light grey jacket and trousers, fancy vest, gold chain, masonic charm attached. A colour manufacturer's traveller. Is well known in the Provinces. Warrant issued. 8.— K Division.— For indecent assaults on boys— STEWART DENIS BARRETT, age 38, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, bair ( bald oa top) light, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, dark jacket suit, fawn colour overcoat, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A school teacher; native of Devonport. Warrant issued. 9.— N Division.— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences— JOHN RUSSELL, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache ( cut short) light brown, small piercing eyes, thin nose, speaks quickly; dress, black overcoat, dark suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat, flat brim. Supposed a native of Liverpool. He advertised for a partnership, and on a person agreeing to take him as such, he stated he would invest £ 5,000 in the business, and under the pre- tence of being without his cheque book, obtained the above amount. Warrant issued. 10.— R Division.— For ste^ liner. ( by trick) 2nd inst.— VICTOR ANGUS HUME, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, brown and grey mixture suit, dark overcoat and cap, may be wearing blue reefer suit, brass anchor buttons on coat, P. & O. cap. gold braid badge in front. An engineer. He orders goods from out- fitters to be sent to his lodgings, to be paid for on delivery, when delivered, he takes the goods to a room on the pretence of examining same, and absconds. BERKSHIRE. 14.— Newbury ( County).— For stealing, 21st ult., at Hungerford, £ 14 2s. 6d.; and a cheque for 12s. 6d.— HERBERT FLOYD, alias JONES, age 47, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, small hole in left cheek, right little finger crooked, walks badly; dress, grey suit and overcoat, black neckerchief, brown cap, brown leather leggings. Information to Supt, Gamble, Newbury. 15. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 3rd inst.— A MAN, age 20 to 23, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, oval face, clean shaved, of good address; dress, dark suit, check cap, lace boots. Stated he was agent for a clothing firm who are prepared to supply clothing by the instalment system, obtained orders, and deposits in advance, gave printed receipts, bearing the name of a small local firm, or " The Supnly Co.," adding the name of the town, " Cheque holders served from 3 p. m. to 10 p. m." written in red ink, thereon. ( Is identical with Man, Case No. 4, 2nd inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. Lait, Fenny Stratford. 17.— High Wycombe ( County).— For ob- taining, by false pretences, 23rd ult., at Chesham, 3 pairs ladies' black glace button boots, patent toe caps ( 2 size 4 ; the other 5), " Wycliffe Brand " stamped on soles, wrapped in brown paper, " Wm. Sills, Broadway, Chesham," thereon; 2 blue worsted serge suits, fit youth of 17— LOUISA RIDGEWELL, alias REDGEWELL, Office No. S 3370, age about 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- nlexion very pale, hair and eyes dark, round face; dress, black jacket and dress, supnosed black hat. Left Chesham same day by train for Baker Street. Represented she was in service at a local hotel and that her mistress had sent her for the goods on approval. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. CA MB RID GESHIRE . 18.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtain- ing, by false pretences, 19th ult., 2 pairs of lace boots ( 1 pair size 9; 1 pair brown, size 7), makers " Robinson and Brett, Cambridge," stamped inside tops— I. KNOX, age 35 to 37, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., square build, complexion fair, moustache brown;, wearing grey overcoat and cap, dark tie. He obtained the boots by representing himself as a Prison official, and stated that he would send the money by a warder. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CA RNA R VONSHIRE. 19.— Carnarvon ( County).— For embezzl- ing £ 4 5s.— ANEURIN DAYIES, age 26, height 5 ft. 5i in., complexion nale, hair very dark, eyes brown." A native of Llanrwst, Denbighshire. Was employed as an ironmonger's clerk. May be found at Salvation Army Barracks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. CORNWALL. 20.- Falmouth ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Helston— HUGH STANLEY, age about 37. height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair lierht, clean shaved, fullness under one eye, wears glasses, walks erect; dress, tweed suit, black hard felt hat. He was formerly employed by a firm to collect amounts for insertion of advertisements in a directory, and is now repre- senting himself as a collector, receives payments, and gives receipts from a book belonging to the same firm. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Smale, Helston. 21.— Liskeard ( County). — For obtaining £ 12 10s., by false pretences, at Saltash— FRANK MIDDLETON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair and eyes dark, moustache dark brown; wear- ing long dark brown ribbed cloth overcoat, dark blue cap with glaced peak, dark tie. He repre- sented himself as a silversmith, produced passes authorising him to trade at barracks. On 1st ult. he called at a bank and asked to be allowed to open an account, on 2nd ult. he paid a cheque for £ 20 to his credit, drawn by Lee Middleton & Co.; on 3rd ult. he paid in a cheque for £ 19 10s., drawn by Lee Middleton & Co., on the Devon and Cornwall Bank, Stonehouse; made out a cheque for £ 12 10s., and received the amount. The cheques have sinced been returned, marked " No funds." ( Is identical with S. Lawrence, Case No. 13, 31st March, 1899.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Liskeard. DENBIGHSHIRE. 22.— Wrexham ( bounty).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, at Llanr- haiadr, 27th ult.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, heavy moustache, and eyes dark; dress, dark suit and overcoat, hard felt hat, lace boots. Had with him a brown leather bag, fastens at side, and a parcel. Warrant issued. Information to Deputv Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 23. — Chesterfield ( Borouph). — For em- bezzling £ 1, 11th ult. — FERDINAND CAPELLE, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, hair and slight moustache dark, abscess scar on neck, speaks English well. He was employed by an Italian as manager of a small ice cream shop, has also been employed as outside porter at railway stations. Absconded 11th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DORSETSHIRE. 21.— Weymo ' ith ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— SYBIL GERTRUDE WILSON, alias AGNESS WILSON, age 21 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue ( believed cast in one at times), swings her arms in front of her and turns her toes inwards; wearing light cloth- ing, of theatrical appearance. She operates in conjunction with an alleged sister, takes a large house, obtains goods, furniture, food, & c., on the pretence that their mother is well- to- do, and owns land and property in Scotland, which she is about to dispose of. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Weymouth. ESSEX. 25.— Grays ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Langdon Hills, 28th ult., a lady's gold keyless watch, No. 86851, chased back, maker's, Kendall and Dent, London; 1 do. long gold neck chain, small links— FRANK CLARK, age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair brown, eyes blue; dress, dark grey overcoat, dark trousers, red and black mixture tie, gold pin, brown tweed cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 26.— Swansea ( Borough).— For conspiring with a man in custody. to defeat the ends of Justice by hindering and preventing a witness from appearing to give evidence in a case of felony—- ALLEN CLARE, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., moustache grey, rather peculiar visage, of good address. A wine and spirit merchants' traveller. Is well known in the Rhondda. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 27.— Bristol ( City^.— For stealing, 13th ult., 2 large cotton sheets, " Carter" in red cotton in corner of 1; 2 white blankets with red and blue stripes, nearly new; 1 white table cloth, 2 yards long, yards wide, flowered pattern; 1 clothes brush; 1 carving knife and fork, white buck horn handles; 1 carving knife, white handle; 1 white metal table spoon; 1 iron saucepan, medium size THOMAS, age about 40, height 5 ft., com- plexion and hair dark; dress, black dress, jacket, and hat, black veil.— KATE DAVIES ( supposed sister of' above), age 36 to 38, height 4 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark; dress, black jacket, dress, and hat. Both spoke with Welsh ac- cent. Stated they were ironers, took furnished apartments on 8th ult. and absconded 13th ult. Had with them A GIRL, age 14; wearing black clothing. And A BOY, age 2 years; wearing cream colour jacket and tam- o'- shanter. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 28.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining Is. 9d by false pretences, 19th ult. — GEORGE THOMAS TILTON, aUas GEORGE THOMAS CLUTTERBUCK, TILTON, WILSON, DER- RANT, and LLOYD, Office No. 3513- 99, age 48, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, long thin features, hair brown, slight whiskers and mous- tache turning grey, eyes hazel, 2nd joint of each 1st ajid 2nd fingers enlarged, right leg in. shorter than left, fleshy mole back of neck; dress, brown jacket suit, black soft felt hat. An agent; native of Gloucester. Between 19th and 24th ult. he arranged for tradesmen to do repairs to property and obtained several small sums of money on the pretext of making up the amount of a bill he had to discharge. He also obtained a situation as agent to an Insurance Company, and induced the secretary to give him money for the purpose of fetching his luggage from the railway station. Is likely to be found at small refreshment rooms or private lodgings, and is believed to be accom- panied by A WOMAN, age about 30, medium height; and A CHILD, age about 3 years; wear- ing a plaid frock. Sentenced at St. Alban's Quarter Sessions, 18th October, 1904, to 18 months imprisonment for a similar offence; has also been convicted in London, at Usk, Bristol, Gloucester, Bath, Newport, Hereford, Portsmouth, Reigate, and Cambridge. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 29. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing, 28th ult., a pair of dark brown boots, square toes with toe caps, size 7 or 8; 1 old brown leather hand bag, leather handle, 2 brass clips; 1 green mixture cap, " Flight" inside; 1 dark grey over- coat, vertical pockets outside, tab with " Capt. H. J. Thompson " thereon, sewn inside of one pocket; a ' Rover" bicycle, No. 6836, enamelled black, straight handle bars, cork grips with white tips, 2 rim brakes, new Dunlop back tyre, Warwick front tyre, rubber pedals, large Standard cyclo- meter, registering about 1,460 miles, mudguards, new bell, and tool bag, containing accessories; and £ 9— ERNEST JAMES COLTMAN, age about 30, height 5 ft, 5] in., complexion fair, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes light blue, round brown mole outside left eye; dress, blue serge suit, jacket and vest, double- breasted, " Hawkes" on buttons, " Army and Navy" on trousers buttons, and the stolen coat and cap. Is a deserter from the 1st Yorkshire Regiment. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 30.— Basingstoke ( County)— For steal- ing, 6th inst., a lady's silver watch, open face, chased back, much worn, black hands and figures, " Bulls servant" scratched inside case; 1 new yellow silk blouse, trimmed cream insertion and black velvet ribbon; 3 chemises and 2 night dresses, trimmed white lace and insertion; 1 plaid sash— GLADYS STEWART, alias CARRE, LAUDER, ROSS, PHILLIPS, BARBARA MARY ROSS, MORRISON, and HIGGINS, age 23, height 5 ft, 2 in., rather stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, front teeth decayed; dress, black skirt, light grey three- quarter length jacket, blue bodice trimmed white lace, brown chiffon hat with strings, trimmed cow- slips, patent leather shoes with straps, when last seen she was wearing the stolen blouse. An actress; native of Inverness. Sentenced at Hants Quarter Sessions, 27th June, 1905, to 6 months imprisonment for larceny ( bailee). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. KENT. 31. — Dart ford ( County). — ^ or stealing from his lodgings, 5th inst., a lady's gold dress ring, set sapphire and pearls; 1 do., set 7 pink corals; 1 chased keeper ring; 1 lady's long gold watch chain; 1 pair gold earrings, pearl in centre; £ 15 ; and a number of Jubilee and old coins— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, moustache light, mark on upper lip, iscar on one finger; dress, dark mixture suit, gold pin, bowler hat, rather heavy boots. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 32.— H Division.— For malicious wound- ing, 10th ult.— SAMUEL PHILLIPS, alias ELIAS, EDWARD and LIONEL ANSELL, Office No. 359- 00, Case No. 2, 23rd ult., age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar on and over left eyebrow, prominent nose; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A Jew; native of London. May be found at race meetings. Last sentenced at Great Yarmouth Petty Sessions, 22nd September, 1905, to 1 month hard labour for attempted larceny ( person), as Edward Ansell. Has also been con- victed at Brighton, Aylesbury, and Huntingdon. ( Apprehended, see Case No. 91.) Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W.
