All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZBTTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THH EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. t. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in qutstion to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. i. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10 « . A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. I. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 10 EONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be dearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard, London, S. SPECIAL NOTICE. IN certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is • therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient - for the purpose ; but if a photograph is applied • for, or. if, in any rare case, it should be re- quired to complete the identification, the cost • will be charged to the Police Force interested. BERKSHIRE. 9. — Reading ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th ult., a grey overcoat, side pockets, 1 button missing — A MAN, name supposed WILLIAM LEWIS, age 4 ® , height 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, hair dark ( turning grey), moustache brown, large Roman nose, addicted to drink, speaks with London accent; dress, grey jacket, black trousers, brown fiat tie, grey cap, heavy nailed boots. A painter. Is fond of singing at public houses. He was discharged from Devizes Prison about 6 weeks ago, afterwards stayed at the Church Army Home, Newbury. Had in his possession a reference from the Chaplain of Devizes Prison. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HARRY BOULTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, slight scar on side of nose, boil scar on right side of neck, 2 prominent teeth in front of upper jaw, 1 missing on right side; dress, brown tweed jacket and vest, blue trousers, blue overalls, dark cap, dirty striped wrapper, brown boots. He took lodgings and stated that he was employed at the Electric Lighting Station, fixing a new plant, and that he came from Glasgow with other men, who were working for the same firm. Stated he belonged to Pang- bourne. He represents himself as a poultry breeder and potato merchant. ( See Case No. 9, 29th January, 1904.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, High Wycombe. OA RNA R VONSHIRE. 13.— Conway ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Conway Union, 7th September, 1905— PATRICK GANNON, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes blue, scar centre of forehead, above right elbow and back of right hand. CHESHIRE. 14.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 25th ult., a silver English lever watch, No. 213925, " James Reade & Co., Coventry," on dial— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion rucldy, full round features, high cheek bones, hair and moustache ( short) dark; wearing 2 short blue jackets ( 1 nearly new, and similar to a railway porter's), blue striped muffler, dark cap, with thin light stripe, Blucher boots. Stated he had been transferred from the Goods' Depot, L. and. Western Railway, Ardwick Green to Crewe. Appeared conversant with railway work. Warrant issued. 15.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 26th ult., a centre seconds metal watch; 1 lady's silver chain, long and short links alternately, long links chased— HERBERT EDWARD QUAINTON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache light; dress, blue pilot jacket, brown narrow cord trousers, dark blue muffler, red flowers thereon, dark grey cap with double back, lace boots. ( Is identical with Man, Case No. 16, 27th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 16.— Macclesfield ( County).— For steal- ing at Alderley Edge, between 14th and 23rd ult., a large silver soup ladle, King's pattern, " C. C. S. F." engraved on handle— A MAN, sup- posed a Jew, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, prominent nose, liair and moustache brown, large eygs; wearing dark clothing, carried a small black hand bag. He deals in cheap jewellery. Supposed a native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. 17.— Hyde ( Borough.).— For stealing £ 14 10s. — WALTER RATCLIFFE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, hair brown, moustache ( inclined to sandy) light, halting stammer when commencing to speak, light mole on left jaw, turns his toes outward when walking, well educated; dress, grey tweed suit, square cut jacket, dark overcoat. Ap- pearance of a clerk or commercial traveller. Has been employed by a firm of solicitors. He ob- tained a considerable amount of money from various clubs, to which he acted as secretary, and absconded. ( See portrait, Case No. 90.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hyde. CUMBERLAND. IS — Workington ( County).— For assault on police, 19th ult..— ALEXANDER HODG- SON, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark, slight moustache brown, large dent top of head, swinging gait; dress, navy blue jacket suit and cap, lace boots. A ship's fireman; native of Harrington. He left Harrington, 20th ult., on the ss. Sarah Brough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cheesman, Workington. DORSETSHIRE. 19.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— GEORGE GUY, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache brown, eyes ( full) supposed grey, long thin nose, carries his head forward, very talkative; dress, usually dark brown cycling suit. A cycle agent and repairer. Absconded about 16th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Eacoek, Wey mouth. ESSEX. 20.— Chelmsford ( County).— For obtain- ing food, money and lodgings by false pretences, between 23rd and 27th ult.— ROBERT YYSE, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes ( slight defect in one) brown, rather large head; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey trousers with dark stripes, dark tie with white sprays, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Had with him a pair of brown leather leggings. A groom; native of Broomfield, Essex. He usually stays at coffee or public houses, represents that he is employed in the neighbourhood, thereby obtains credit. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 21. — Romford ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), 12th ult., a " Swift" bicycle, black en- amelled, back pedalling brake, front Crabbe thumb brake, odd clips on front fork, rubber pedals CARTER ( supposed false), age about 26,, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, clean shaved, hair dark; wearing dark clothes and cap. For stealing ( bailee), 12th ult., a nearly new A. & Co." bicycle, black enamelled frame, plated rims, liued black red centres, Rover rubber pedals, 2 inverted lever brakes, Reflex clipper tyres, large hexagon nut on left of bottom bracket, transfer " A. & Co." on head and back mudguard, new Brooks's saddle — GEORGE MAY ( supposed false), age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion, hair, and slight moustache dark; dress, light coat and vest, dark striped trousers, cap, brown boots. Jones, Romfordi. 22.— Southend ( County .— For officebreak- ing, 23rd ult., at Rayleigh Railway Station, and stealing £ 1 8s.; 2 calico bags, about 5 in. long, 4| in. wide, " G. E. R." stamped thereon, and piece of red tape attached— A MAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark; dress, dark jacket, trousers, and cap. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 23. — Cardiff ( City). — For stealing £ 49, WILLIAM FRANK GEDYE, age 34, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, square shoulders, complexion fresh, oval face, low forehead, prominent nose, round chin, small mouth, hair dark, thick eye- brows, moustache dark, walks quickly; dress, blue serge jacket suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Has been employed as boots at a hotel. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cardiff. 24.— Swansea ( Borouqh) — F « r embezz'p- ment — GEORGE FREDERICK BEVAN, age 46, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in.,- slight build, complexion fair, thin features, very little hair brown, may be wearing a wig, no eyebrows, clean shaved; dress, dark grey overcoat, black coat and vest, dark trousers with thin white stripes, dark tweed cap, wore a silver watch and chain. Had with him a small brown hand bag, containing a few collars. Is fond of betting and card playing. Absconded 2nd ult. Warrant issued. Not to arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 25.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ i from his lodgings, 23rd ult. — ARTHUR WILSON, alias ARTHUR CHARLES CHAMBERS, Office No. 1745- 05, age 28, height 5 ft. 6£ in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, 2 white birth marks back of neck, 4 front upper teeth missing; dress, dark check suit. Native of Newry, Down. He hawks fountain pens and cheap jewellery, and may be acting as " cheap Jack" in market places. Sentenced at Bristol Assizes, lst December, 1904, to 12 months hard labour for larceny and forgery. Liberated on remission, 17th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Allbutt, Bristol. ISLE OF ELY. 26.— Wisbech ( County).— On Bench War- rant, for failing to surrender to his bail at Ely Quarter Sessions, 18th ult., charged with counting- housebreaking, 28th June last— GEORGE WIL- LIAM TAYLOR, age 22, height 5 ft. 6* in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair brown, eyes grey. A collier; native of Terrington St. Clements, Norfolk. May seek employment as a farm labourer, or on railways. He belongs to the 3rd Lincoln Regiment ( Militia). Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Wisbech. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 27. — Mansfield ( County).— For stealing electrical apparatus, metal, & c., to the value of £ 200, from the Sutton Colliery, Skegby, where he managed electrical works— WILLIAM FRED ERICK SMITH, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, erect bearing, complexion sallow, hair nearly black, moustache sandy ( dyed black), eyes supposed brown, bracelet, anchor, and mermaid right wrist, right big toe flat, part of nail missing, of good address; dress, check knicker suit with brown leggings, or blue serge square cut jacket suit, usually wears grey cap. An electrician; sup- posed a native of Derby. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hensley, Mansfield. SHROPSHIRE. 23.— Whitchurch ( County).— For stealing a pair of strong nailed boots, size 8, tips on heels and toes— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, slight moustache brown, supposed tattooing left forearm; dress, blue pilot jacket, dark narrow cord trousers, blue and red flowered muffler, grey cap, turned up at back, strong boots. Appear- ance of a labouring engineer. Information to Supt. Edge, " Whitoliurch. 5 TAFFORDSHIRE. 29.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing £ 5- 18s. 9Jd. from his lodgings, 30th ult.— BERT. BECKETT ( supposed false), age 27 or 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, 2 flags in blue and red supposed tattooed on right forearm; dress, blue pilot reefer jacket, cord trousers, cap, lace boots. Stated he was employed repairing telegraph lines. ( See Case No. 15, 27th ult.) Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Burslem. 30.— Longton ( County).— For obtaining 25s. by false pretences, 19th ult.— JOHN BARRA- CLOUGH, alias PATRICK CLARKE,. COLLINS, & c., Office No. 2858- 98 ( see Case No. 14), age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, scar on right cheek; dress, dark striped overcoat, blue striped trousers, blue spotted tie, brown boots. Stated he was the nephew of a local horse proprietor, and had come to lease the fair ground, and that one of his uncles had trotting horses at a hotel close by. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Longton. 31 .— Stafford ( o'mty).— For obtaining £ 1 Is., by false pretences, 21st ult.— Expiree FRED- ERICK GEORGE HARRISON, alias FRED- ERICK WELLS, FRANK WALLACE, and FREDERICK GEORGE WELLS, Office No. 2962- 98, Case No. 45, 27th ult., age 29, height 5 ft. 6f in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes brown, scar over each eyebrow, and 3 centre of forehead, tulip, " LOUIE, F. G. H." left fore- arm ; wearing brown overcoat ( believed velvet collar), bowler hat, gloves. A clerk; native of Dundee. Fraud committed in a similar manner as shown in above quoted case. Sentenced at Salford Hundred Sessions, 18th February, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for fraud. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Stafford. 3'. — Stoke - on- Trent ( County).— For stealing from their lodgings, 23rd ult., a silver Geneva watch, No. 255330; a cash boxand about 5s. 6d.— TWO MEN ( lst, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin face, hair light brown, clean shaved; dress, dark grey suit, fawn colour overcoat, blue tie, cap. 2nd, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stiff build, complexion dark, hair ( curly)' black; dress, dark grey suit, dark tie, blue cap, lace boots. They took lodgings, and represented' that they were engaged at the Hippodrome, Stoke).- Warrants issued. Information to Supt. CITY OF LONDON. £ 10 REWARD. 33.— For embezzling and stealing various amounts, the monies of his employers— ERNEST LOCKE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., LANCASHIRE. 35.— Old Trafford ( County).— For non- payment of £ 55 16s. 6d. maintenance arrears— ARTHUR FORDES, age 41, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and very slight moustache dark, full eyes, nose slightly bent to right, of delicate appearance; dress, dark jacket suit. A clerk; native of Loudon. Photograph taken about 3 years ago. Absconded 23rd Sep- tember. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Henry H. Hextall of the firm of James Pearsall & Co., 71 and 72 Little Britain, London, E. C., to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Locke. Information to Supt. Stark, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. erect bearing, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes grey, left arm in. shorter than right. A printer. Has been em- ployed at Manchester, Liverpool, Perth, Glasgow, and in India. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keys, Old Trafford, near Manchester. FORFARSHIRE. 34— Dundee ( City).— For stealing 7 chequfs ( recovered); and £ 26 ' 3s. 6d. — ALEXANDER MOODIE, age about 55, height about 5 ft. 6 in., thin face, hair ( bald in front), and moustache sandy, small tuft of hair on chin; dress, greyish suit, light tweed cap, may be wearing a dark over- coat. A porter. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee.
