POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2258. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. A. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. . . . Should a case occur, immediate notice is requested. 2 — A Division.— For stealing a quantity of Sheffield plate, between 4th and 14th inst.— ARTHUR CHARLES BRAGGE, age 28, " height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair, and eyes ( large) brown, nose has been broken, prominent teeth; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, fancy linen vest, mauve tie, black felt hat. A fine art dealer; native of London.— BERTIE CECIL DICKS, age 22, height 6 ft., slight build, stoops slightly, com- plexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel, pimples on face; dress, light brown tweed coat and vest, dark trousers, straw hat. Supposed a native of Gravesend or Chatham. Warrant issued. 9.— N Division.— For stealing ( servant^, 10th ult., a pair silver candlesticks, about 8 in. high, ebony handles, surmounted by unicorn; 1 pair do. cut flower stands, fluted tops; 1 pair do dishes, perforated bottoms, shape of shamrock; 1 pair white linen sheets— LIZZIE HIGGS, age 26, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, nose turns slightly up- wards ; dress, dark grey tweed jacket, black skirt and bodice, dark grey motor hat with peak front and back. Supposed a native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. 10. — W Division. — For embezzlement — JOHN TOWNSEND, alias HENRY MASON, HANSON, and JOHN BUTCHER, Office No. 376- 01, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, top of right middle finger partly deficient, scar base of left thumb, right shoulder lower than left, head in- clined to right : dress, dark suit, panama hat. A butcher; native of Herefordshire. Sentenced at Warwick County Sessions, 20th October, 1903, to 8 months hard labour for obtaining money by false pretences. Liberated 5th June, 1904. Has also been convicted at South London Sessions, West- minster Police Court, and Hyde Petty Sessions. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard. S. W. A hawker. Was accompanied by his Wife and 2 Sons.— NOAH FLORENCE, age about 15, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey. They usually travel Mid- Wales, Salop, and Herefordshire. Warrant issued. CARNARVONSHIRE. 13.— Pwelheli ( County1 — For stealing a mackintosh ( recovered)— EPHRAIM GRIFFITH, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., rather slight build, moustache dark; dress, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, light plaid cap. A native of Trawsfynydd, Merionethshire. He represents himself as a horse and cattle dealer. May be found with cabmen or car pronrietors. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Pwelheli. DERBYSHIRE. 14.— Buxton County}.— For stealing. 7th inst., a bicycle, Rothwell maker, " No. 13035 " on frame, free wheel, 24 in. frame, front tyre re- rubbered, back Dunlop tyre, rather old, front brake out of repair, Vox- Popli back brake, wide handle bars, rubber pedals, Brooks's saddle— ALFRED FORD, age 18, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and hair light; dress, grey tweed suit and cap, lace boots. A native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Buxton. 15 — Derby ( County).— For stealing a brown leather bag; 1 collector's book; samples of cloth and drapery; season ticket Ilkeston to Notting- ham, Midland Railway; and 6s. 6d., 27th ult., at Long Eaton — ALFRED PHILLIPS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, thin face, hair black, moustache dark, eyes ( large) grey; dress, dark blue serge jacket suit, grey cap. DEVONSHIRE. 16 — Exeter ( City).— For stealing, 22nd ult., 1 old- fashioned 18 ct. gold hunter watch, white dial, gold hands, plain case; 1 do. 22 ct. gold verge watch, pear case, white dial, gold hands; 11 gold seals, very old design, various colour stones, all have crests engraved thereon, one has " M. C."— Licence- holder HARRY THOMPSON, alias HERBERT RANKIN, Office No. 2614- 02, age 23, height 5 ft. 9^ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right eyebrow and end of nose, hairy mole right cheek; dress, dark grey coat and trousers, fancy vest, bowler hat. A tailor; native of Edinburgh. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 14th February, 1903, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking and larceny. Licenced 10th June, 1905. d 76. ESSEX. 17 — Chelmsford ( county).— For embezzl- ing £ 15 lis— ROBERT KING, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, of delicate appearance, hair light brown, clean shaved; dress, long dark fawn colour coat, dark grey jacket, dark striped trousers, mauve tie, check cap. A clerk. Absconded from Great Braddon, 3rd inst., left Chelmsford same day by train for London. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 18. — Thorpe - le- Soken ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a bicycle at Clacton- on- Sea, 6th inst.— JOHN GRAY, a^ e 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, dark suit and cap. Is a deserter from the 1st Scottish Borderers. A native of St. Virgins, Arbroath. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe- le- Soken. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19-— Bridgend ( County). — For deserting their wives and families, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Bridgend and Cow- bridge Union— EDWARD SHEARON, age about 44, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, deep scar across head, addicted to drink. A labourer or haulier; tramps the country.— WILLIAM HENRY REES, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, mous- tache and eyes dark, nose appears to have been broken, peculiar voice; dress, dark pilot cloth suit, square cut, black and white silk neckerchief, black hard felt hat. Davis, Bridgend. 20.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For failing to re- port — Licence- holder FRANCIS HENRY PERRY, alias HENRY CARLBERG, FRANCIS FOWLER, and SINCLAIR, Office No. 1474- 02, age 40, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, anchor, heart, and cross right forearm, rose and leaves back left forearm. An asylum attendant; native of Ayr. Sentenced at Usk Quarter Sessions, 2nd July, 1902, to 3 years penal servitude for obtaining goods by false pre- tences. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Aldershot ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), during April last, a lady's silver watch, open face, gold numerals, black hands, flowers on dial— E. LEWIS JONES, age 55, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stoops slightly, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light brown, rather deaf; dress, dark suit, grey overcoat, dark motor cap with light stripes, brown boots, usually carries a cane, small black hand bag containing tools. Hawkins, Aldershot. 26. — Gosport ( County\ — For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered)— JACK EDWARD SIMMONDS, age 22, height 5 ft. 7b in., com- plexion swarthy, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A native of Rangoon, Burmah. A sick berth atten- dant. Is an absentee from H. M. S. Victory, Portsmouth. May now be wearing plain clothes. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. 27 — Portsmouth ( Borough,}.— For failing to surrender to his recognizances at Quarter Ses- sions, 1st ult., for larceny, 24th April last — GEORGE SPICER, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; dress, black double- breasted coat and vest, grey striped trousers, light cap. A native of Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HER TFORDSHIRE. 2S.— Hitohin ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 1st and 4th inst., at Walsworth, a lady's gold wire ring; 1 meerschaum cigarette holder in case, " A present from Skegness " thereon— WIL- LIAM FIELD, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., well built, erect bearing, hair ( bald on top), moustache, and eyes dark; dre6s, fawn or drab colour suit, black soft felt hat, black and yellow tie. A painter, represents himself as a sign- writer. He took train to King's Cross, London, on 10th inst. Warrant issued. 29.— Hitchin ( County).— For obtaining 3s. by false pretences, 26th ult.— — ALLEN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., well built, erect bearing, complexion fair, sunburnt, moustache light; dress, brown striped jacket and vest, grey trousers, white straw hat with black band. He represented that he had a motor cycle being re- paired in the town, stated he had run short of money, and obtained the above amount for the purpose of sending a telegram. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 30.— Huntingdon ( County).— For stealing, 15th June last, a B flat clarionette in case, 13 keys, including C sharp, fitted with lyre, " Beeson & Co., 198 Euston Road, London," stamped on joints— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, high cheek bones, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes grey, large nose; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers and cap. Stated he was a painter and a native of White- chapel. A good clarionet player; is probably tramping the country. Believed to be a deserter from the City of London Militia. Warrant issued. KENT. 31. — Rochester ( City). — For failing to notify change of residence — Licence- holder ARTHUR POTTER, alias CHARLES CLARK, Office No. 199- 02, age 37, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue grey, 2nd and 3rd right fingers marked through poison- ing, lost 2nd, 3rd, and 4th left fingers. A cooper; native of Brighton. Sentenced at Chelmsford County Quarter Sessions, 16th October, 1902, to 3 years penal servitude and remanet of former sen- tence, for larceny. Licenced 8th inst, which expires 14th July, 1906. Z c 337. Has also been convicted at Mark Cross, Lewes, Maidstone, and Highgate Petty Sessions. To be dealt with where found. A. fittings, stay of back mud- guard broken, old Dun- lop cover back wheel, lamp attached— WASH COONUS, a Russian, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, long pointed nose, hair light; dress, dark grey reefer suit, straw hat with black band. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 33— Bury ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 4th inst., an English centre second watch, large open face, key wind, No. 6528; 1 old English lever, open face, out of repair— A MAN, who gave the name of JOHN HARRISON, alias MICKLEWRIGHT, age about 31, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache brownish; dress, brown tweed suit, straw hat with narrow brim, coloured band. A watch maker and repairer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 1906. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 PORTRAIT OF A PERSON IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT oi.— B Division.— Information is required respecting the antecedents of JOHN JONES, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, line and dots in blue ink on each fore- arm; dress, dark grey jacket, blue serge trousers, grey vest and cap, lace boots. A kitchen porter. This man is awaiting trial at North London Ses- sions, 22nd inst., for burglary. The offence was effected by crossing waste ground at rear of premises, climbing wall to roof of flats, entering window ( partly opened but secured by patent fasteners, which could be reached and undone by inserting aim), stealing quantity of clothing, and leaving by way of pantry window. He refuses to give any account of himself, but it is thought there may be previous convictions, or that he may be wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. LANCASHIRE. 37.— Liverpool { City).—¥ or stealing £ 30— RICHARD JONES, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald) dark, whiskers and moustache brown, speake slowly and quietly; drees, dark suit, grey cap.
